Abstract:A new protection coating for sintered NdFeB magnets, which consists of a fine Al powder, was introduced. The morphology of the coating and the changes of the coating composition were investigated by SEM and XRD respectively. And the corrosion resistance of the coating was tested by the salt spray, polarization curves and EIS. Meanwhile the mechanism of corrosion resistance and formation for. the coating was analyzed. The results indicated that the aluminum coating presented an overlapping structure layer by layer, which provides a protection for the cathode. The overlapping structure with self-passivation of chromium oxide altogether exerted the coordinated effect, resulting that the sintered NdFeB with aluminum coating resisted salt spray 100 h.
Study Magnetic Properties and Corrosion Resistance of Sintered NdFeBAlDyNb Magnets

Abstract:Corrosion resistance of sintered NdFeB magnets can be improved by alloying, but the magnetic properties are decreased at the same time. To solve this problem, Dy and Nb were added to improve corrosion resistance and magnetic properties. Experimental results indicated that the introduction of Dy and Nb in NdFeB improved greatly the coercivity, and also decreased the negative effect of Dy on the remanence. With 1.0% Dy and 0.8% Nb added, the magnets had the best magnetic properties. The increase of Dy and Nb contents also enhanced the corrosion resistance of Nd FeB magnets. The compound addition of elements is an effective method to obtain fine properties of NdFeB magnets for wide application in corrosion environments.

Abstract:Amorphous Al-Mn coating was electrodeposited on NdFeB magnets from AlCl3-EMIC-MnCl2 ionic liquid with the pretreatment of anodic electrolytic etching in AlCl3-EMIC ionic liquid at room temperature. The microstructure, composition and phase constituents of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested by means of potentiodynamic polarization and immersion test in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The results show that anodic electrolytic etching in AlCl3-EMIC ionic liquid is a satisfactory pretreatment to remove the surface oxide film and favor the adhesion of the Al-Mn alloy coating to the NdFeB substrate. The amorphous Al-Mn alloy coating provides sacrificial anodic protection for NdFeB. It exhibited good corrosion resistance and significantly reduced the corrosion current density of NdFeB by three orders of magnitude at potentiodynamic polarization. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Corrosion Resistance of Electrodeposited Aluminum Coating on NdFeB Magnet from AlCl_3-EMIC Ionic Liquid

Abstract:Electrodeposited Al coating was prepared on NdFeB magnet from ionic liquid consisted of AlCl_3 and 1 - methyl - 3 - ethyl imidazole chloride (EMIC).The morphology and elemental composition of as - deposited Al coating were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry,and its adhesion to substrate was examined using a scratch - tearing tester and a thermal shock tester.Moreover,the corrosion resistance of the coating was evaluated based on salt spray test as well as measurement of polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectra. Results show that the surface oxide layer on NdFeB anode can be effectively removed by activation at a current density of 2.5 A/dm~2 for 20 min,and compact Al coating with good adhesion to substrate can be produced on the activated substrate surface. As-deposited Al coating was able to prominently increase the corrosion resistance of the NdFeB magnet,lowering the corrosion current density and increasing the impedance value both by two orders of magnitude.In particular,as-deposited Al coating remained entirely intact after 200 h of salt spray test.

Abstract:The coating technics by electroless deposition with Ni-P alloy on the surface of NdFeB magnets were optimized by orthogonal experiments. The microstructure and morphology of NdFeB magnets with electroless Ni-P deposit from an acidic bath and an alkaline bath were studied and compared. The corrosion rates of Ni-P deposites and substrate were measured in the NaCl solutions of 3.5wt%, the HCl solutions of 10vot% and the NaOH solutions of 20wt%. The corrosion characteristics of Ni-P deposits were evaluated for the two baths by electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization and impedance techniques. The results show that both deposits enhanced the corrosion resistance of substrate. The Ni-P deposit from the acidic bath provides a better protection due to the amorphous structure, and the continuous and compact cystiform microstructure on the surface of coatings.

Abstract:The surface of sintered NdFeB was coated with a lanthanum-silane film using an electrochemically assisted sol–gel method to improve its protective performance. The electrochemically assisted deposition mechanism is localized alkali catalysis at the surface with an applied cathodic potential, which promotes the condensation reaction of hydrolyzed silanol groups on the sintered NdFeB substrate surface and the production of lanthanum oxide/hydroxide in the silane film as well. Contact angle test results indicated that the hydrophobicity of the lanthanum-silane film was considerably enhanced compared to the bare sintered NdFeB substrate, and the water contact angle was above 150°. Meanwhile, electrochemical measurements suggested that the lanthanum-doped silane film significantly reduced the corrosion rate of the sintered NdFeB magnet in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution with an Icorr value of 5.26 × 10−7 A cm−2, and the protection efficiency reached 92.5 %. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of the lanthanum-silane film-coated sintered NdFeB sample were also evaluated and the effect was negligible.
Morphology and Anti-Corrosive Performance of Cr(III) Passivated Zn-Fe Alloy Coating on NdFeB Substrate

Abstract:In this study, low-iron Zn-Fe alloy coatings and pure Zn coatings, with or without trivalent chromium passivation treatment, were electrodeposited onto a sintered NdFeB magnet from a weak acid chloride bath. The surface morphology and structure of the coatings were then examined using the X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope and 3D white-light interfering surface analysis. Meanwhile, the electrodeposition behavior and anti-corrosive properties of the coatings were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and natural salt spray tests. The results indicate that a passivated Zn-Fe alloy coating with a 0.9 wt.% Fe content provided much better corrosion resistance than a pure Zn coating and could provide both anodic protection and physical barrier function in the NdFeB substrates. The Fe element in Zn-Fe alloy coating was predominantly in solid solution in η-phase and small amounts in elemental form, which was beneficial to acquire a compact coating and passivation film. Finally, the passivated Zn-Fe alloy coating withstood 210 h against a neutral 3.5 wt.% NaCl salt spray without any white rust, which was 3-4 times longer than the pure Zn coating.

Abstract:Alumina ceramic coatings were prepared on the sintered NdFeB magnets by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in aluminate solution. The effects of anodic voltages on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the coatings were investigated and the formation mechanism of the coating was also detailedly discussed. The microstructure and composition of the MAO coatings were characterized by SEM, XRD, EDS, XPS and surface roughness, respectively. The MAO coatings on NdFeB magnets were mainly composed of Al2O3 crystal phase, and Fe2O3 and Nd2O3 amorphous phase with some absorbed H2O and –OH. With increasing the voltages, the crystallinity of Al2O3 phase enhanced, while the surface roughness of the coatings also increased. At the same time, the pore sizes of MAO coatings increased, while the amount of the pores decreased. The corrosion resistance of NdFeB samples was improved due to the existence of the MAO coatings. With increasing the voltages, the corrosion resistance of the coated NdFeB samples increased first, reaching the optimum at 420V, and then decreased. The corrosion protection efficiency of the coatings could be up to 94.3%. At the initial stage of MAO process, the compact barrier layer of NdFeB magnets was formed through the deposition of the electrolyte, which was the critical procedure for the MAO treatment of NdFeB magnets and the biggest difference from the valve metals through the conventional anodizing.

Abstract:Anti-corrosion performance is a key factor that limits the lifetime of metallic components for diversified functional applications, particularly for the Nd–Fe–B permanent magnet in which vulnerable Nd is prone to rapid corrosion. To design corrosion-resistant Nd–Fe–B with a prolonged service life, we propose a facile strategy through a pre-coated water film and rapid air oxidation of 0.5–3 h to in situ grow a hydrophobic, thin and uniform surface coating on Nd–Fe–B. Advanced multi-scale techniques manifest that the triplex surface coating consists of an outermost layer of Fe 2 O 3 /Fe 3 O 4 , an intermediate layer of amorphous Nd 2 O 3 , an inner layer of amorphous Nd 2 O 3 in a columnar α-Fe matrix. Among them, the nanometric Fe 2 O 3 needles epitaxially grown on the outermost layer provide hydrophobic characteristics. The columnar α-Fe structurally coherent to the Nd 2 Fe 14 B matrix ensures a strong bonding and stable interface. All these benefits contribute to an outstanding anti-corrosion performance that endures even after 15 cycles of the Tafel test, accompanied by synergistic magnetic and mechanical performance. Prominently, rapid air oxidation for 0.5 h lowers the corrosion current by ∼80% compared to pristine Nd–Fe–B. The above findings provide insights into designing corrosion-resistant metallic alloys in a scalable and robust fashion.

Abstract:A phosphating passivation is conducted on the surface of Al coated NdFeB magnets by a gaseous process. The surface morphology, structure and elemental compositions of the samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The anti-corrosion performances of the phosphating passivated Al/NdFeB magnets are analyzed by neutral salt spray test, potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The corrosion process and corrosion mechanism of the samples are studied by analyzing the coating morphologies, potentiodynamic polarization curves and surface elemental compositions during the immersion test in 3.5 mass% NaCl solution for different time. The surface passivation of Al coated NdFeB magnets can be realized by gaseous phosphating technology, which can effectively improve the corrosion resistance of Al coating. The optimized sample obtained with phosphating temperature at 300 °C achieves the improvement of NSS time from 96 h to 288 h. Gaseous phosphating can effectively seal the pores in vacuum evaporated Al coatings, and form a phosphating passivation film on the coating surface, which contribute to the enhancement of anti-corrosion performances of Al coated NdFeB magnets.

Abstract:Low cost stainless steels (SS) with high performance, especially with good mechanical properties and oxidation resistance at high temperature, are continuous pursuit for manufacture industry. To achieve good combination of mechanical properties, oxidation resistance and cost, nanoprecipitate strengthened alumina forming austenitic (NSAFA) SS have been developed by removing expensive elements such as Nb and Ta, lowering Ni concentration in Fe-26Ni-15Cr-1.5Mo-(2.8-3.5)Al-(1-2.35)Ti (wt.%) alloys. Microstructure investigation demonstrates that NSAFA SS are strengthened by L12 structured (Ni, Fe)3(Al, Ti) γ′ nanoprecipitates with volume fraction around 25% - 40%. Oxidation experiments (750oC/480h) in air demonstrates that all the NSAFA steels have alumina forming ability. In addition, it is found that Al and Ti are all necessary for γ′ nanoprecipitates, but additional Al and Ti facilitate formation of the Ni2AlTi phase. To ensure high volume fraction of γ′ nanoprecipitates and reduce Ni2AlTi phase, 2.8-3.0 wt.% Al and 1.8-2.35 wt.% Ti are preferred. Benefit from the high volume fraction of γ′ nanoprecipitates, yield strength of NSAFA steels is much higher than that of Fe-base superalloy (e.g., A286) and can compare to some Ni-base superalloys (e.g., Hayners 282 & Inconel 740H).
Densification and anticorrosion performances of vacuum evaporated aluminium coatings on NdFeB magnets

Abstract:Al coated NdFeB magnets obtained by vacuum evaporation technique have been densified by high energy ball milling method. The surface morphology, metal composition and microstructure of the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, respectively. The anticorrosive properties were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization curves and neutral salt spray test. The pores in the Al coatings of columnar crystals (Al) induced by the evaporation technique, have been apparently filled in the following ball milling process, leading to the densification of Al coatings and the evident improvement of the anticorrosive performances. When treated with the ball milling time of 30 min, the sample achieves the best anticorrosive performances with the self-corrosion potential of –0.87 V, self-corrosion current density of 1.65 μA/cm2 and the NSS time of 144 h (red rust). The improvement of the anticorrosive performances of vacuum evaporated Al coating mainly lies in the densification effect of the coating, which depends on different loading conditions of ball milling process.The densification of vacuum evaporated Al coatings of sintered NdFeB magnets was successfully achieved by a simple ball milling method, which can close the columnar pores in the Al coatings and enhance the corrosion resistance of Al coatings.<ol class="links-for-figure"><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S100207212030466X-fx1_lrg.jpg">Download : Download high-res image (124KB)</a></li><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S100207212030466X-fx1.jpg">Download : Download full-size image</a></li></ol>

Abstract:Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets present excellent magnetic properties. However, they are highly sensitive to the attack of corrosive environment. The aim of the present work is to describe the improvement of corrosion resistance of such magnets by dodecyl trimethoxysilane (DTMS) treatment. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests showed that, after treated by either DTMS, phosphate or chromate precursor, the protectiveness of Nd–Fe–B alloys was apparently increased. Corrosion performance of magnet treated with silane only was slightly inferior to those of phosphatized or chromatized ones. However, significant improvement in corrosion protection was achieved after two-step treatments, i.e. by top-coating silane films on phosphate or chromate under-layer. The depth profiles of element concentrations on surfaces measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) indicate a two-layer surface structure for two-step treated samples. Co-existing of silane and phosphate or chromate was detected in the top-layer, suggesting the interaction between the two components. This results in the formation of more stable structure of hybrid organ–inorganic coatings against the attack of corrosive species.

Abstract:Rare earth passivation is conducted on Zn coated NdFeB magnets by chemical reaction to enhance the corrosion resistance performance. Morphologies, microstructures and compositions of different passivated coatings are studied by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The corrosion behavior was evaluated by electrochemical measurement and neutral salt spray test. The result shows that the rare earth passivation can enhance the corrosion resistance of Zn coated NdFeB magnets. When the concentration of cerium nitrate is 5 g/L, the passivated specimens can achieve the longest NSS time of 360 h, which is 144 h longer than that of the pristine Zn/NdFeB magnets. The passivation layer on the Zn coating surface contributes to the enhancement of the magnets' corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of Al addition on the magnetic properties and corrosion resistance of amorphous and nanocrystalline FeZrNbBCu alloy were investigated. Small additions of Al affect not only the magnetic properties but also the increment of corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of nanocrystalline alloy was obviously lower than that of the amorphous alloy. The reason can be explained by the fact that the uniformity of the passive film was affected and decreased the corrosion resistance for the formation of nanocrystalline embedded in the amorphous alloy. The Al addition is effective in improving the corrosion resistance and will lead to the increase of the relaxation frequency when the Al content is over 2at%. A layer of protective oxides was formed in the surface of the ribbons after corrosion. The two magnetization processes in the corroded samples were attributed to the coexistence of the surface oxide layer and the inner un-corroded layer of the ribbons.
Improvement of Corrosion Resistance of Sintered NdFeB Magnets by Intergranular Addition of AlN Nanopowders

Abstract:AlN nanopowders were added into Nd(28)Dy(2.4)Fe(bal)B(0.98)Al(0.1)Ga(0.1)Nb(0.1) sintered magnets as grain boundary modifiers with the aim of improving the corrosion resistance and magnetic properties of the magnets. It is found that the appropriate intergranular addition of AlN nanopowders can improve the corrosion resistance. Optimum corrosion resistance can be obtained when 0.1% (mass fraction) AlN is added. In addition, the intrinsic coercivity (H(cj)) is improved greatly by the AlN addition. Microstructure observation indicates that as AlN nanopowders are added to the intergranular phase, the grains are refined effectively. As a result, both the intrinsic coercivity and corrosion resistance are increased simultaneously.

Abstract:In order to improve the corrosion resistance of the sintered NdFeB permanent magnets, Al2O3 ceramic coatings were prepared by a two-step micro-arc oxidation process in an aluminate solution. During the micro-arc oxidation process, the voltage-time curve could be divided into four regions consistent with the valve metals. Results show that the coating exhibits a typical micro-arc oxidation porous surface with the thickness of similar to 5 Rm, and is only composed of Al2O3 crystalline phase with some Fe elements and a few Nd and P elements. The surface roughness of coated NdFeB magnets is higher than that of uncoated sample, while the corrosion resistance is enhanced by one order of magnitude. Unfortunately, the magnetic properties (remanence and maximum energy product) of coated NdFeB sample decrease in different degrees.

Abstract:Cr–N coatings were deposited on alumina borate whisker reinforced pure aluminum matrix composite substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The phase and chemical state of coatings were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscope and X-ray diffraction techniques. Corrosion behaviors were investigated in 3.5%NaCl solution at room temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization curves confirm that the Cr–N coated composite shows not only much lower susceptibility to pitting but also significantly improved corrosion resistance in comparison with untreated composite.

Abstract:A facile and environment-friendly strategy is proposed to prepare dense, thin and antioxidant aluminum coatings on LA43M magnesium alloy via cold spraying and subsequent shot peening technologies. High-energy martensitic stainless steel particles are used to tamp the cold-sprayed coatings, which resulted in complete plastic deformation of Al particles and elimination of pores. The samples with shot-peened Al coating showed excellent corrosion resistance in electrochemical tests. Moreover, long-term salt spray and immersion test revealed that the shot-peened Al coating can effectively protect LA43M alloy from corrosion. Shot-peened Al coating offered promising and long term applications time in the harsh environment.
