Abstract:Significant enhancement in the luminescence and superior photophysical properties of CH3NH3PbBr3 thin films prepared via simple single step spin coating process involving a novel additive mediated solvent extraction step is reported. This process results in significantly lower disorder in CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites with Urbach energies reducing from approximate to 35 to approximate to 17 meV, which is the lowest reported value to date. The additive mediated process also results in a remarkable improvement in the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) from 1% to 30%. Coupled with the overall increase in surface roughness, a significant increase in the internal PLQY from 7% to 77% is estimated, indicating the superior quality of the treated thin films. The resultant high quality CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites with remarkable photophysical properties can be used in realizing highly efficient optoelectronic devices. Highly efficient light emitting diodes using these perovskites are demonstrated here.
Formation and Encapsulation of Lead Halide Perovskites in Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks for Tunable Emission

Abstract:Improving the stability of perovskite quantum dots and adjusting their optical properties are essential for their application in advanced optoelectronic equipment. We provide a simple synthetic method to hybridize perovskite quantum dots and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a polymer matrix. The hybrid material is made by encapsulating perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 quantum dots in lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks. A series of lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs), namely, [Ln(tpob)(DMF)(H2O)]n (Lntpob, Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, H3tpob = 1,3,5-tris(4-carbonylphenyloxy)benzene), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and fully characterized. Lntpobs display a three-dimensional (3D) pcu network with central-symmetric [Eu2(COO)4] structural building units (SBUs) linked by one-dimensional (1D) chains. CH3NH3PbBr3@Eutpob hybrids were developed through a three-step process, in which the precursor PbBr2@Eutpob was formed by immersing the Eutpob crystal synthesized in the first step into a PbBr2 solution; then the composite materials could form quickly when CH3NH3Br was added to the precursor. Therefore, the hybrid composite material exhibits luminescent properties related to the excitation wavelength in the form of powders or thin films. In addition, the photoluminescence of the CH3NH3PbBr3@Eutpob composite can be improved and maintained for a long time after it is introduced into the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. Moreover, the emission peak based on the perovskite quantum dots can still maintain about 85% of the original intensity after being left for 30 days. Also, the obtained PMMA films can achieve tunable emission from red to green.

Abstract:Single-crystalline square microdisks of CH3NH3PbBr3 are prepared by using a one-step solution self-assembly method. Single-mode lasing at 557 nm is achieved based on a built-in whispering gallery mode microresonator at room temperature. By partial replacement of Br with Cl, lasing wavelengths are continuously tuned from 525 to 557 nm.

Abstract:Quantum wells and superlattices are key building blocks in the semiconductor industry, normally fabricated using epitaxial growth techniques, such as vapor phase epitaxy, metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy. However, these complicated preparation processes, as well as their high cost, limit their extensive applications. It is essential to develop a simple solution process for building superstructures. Here, we demonstrate an ion exchange strategy for synthesizing an all-inorganic superlattice cesium lead bromide/layered double hydroxides (CsPbBr 3 /LDH) in solution. At room temperature, the perovskite ions diffuse into the interlayer of LDH and assemble into layered perovskite with various thicknesses. Compared with traditional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite superlattice, the all-inorganic perovskite superlattice CsPbBr 3 /LDH has weak quantum confinement, which exhibits narrow emission line-widths of 20 nm, high quantum yields of 55%, and radiative lifetimes of several ns. Our findings offer a new route to synthesize novel perovskite superlattices and enrich the perovskite supercrystal platform for electronics, photonics and optoelectronics devices.

Single-mode Lasing in CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Microplates Via Micro-Manipulation

Abstract:Recently, lead halide perovskites have achieved extensive research attentions, for their low-cost fabrication process, large absorption coefficient and long electron-hole diffusion length. The optically pumped micro- and nano- lasers have been demonstrated and the estimated quantum yields even approach 100%. In this manuscript, we synthesized perovskite microplates in our experiment with one-step solution self-assembly method. However, as most of the perovskite microplates have large sizes, the lasing modes of them are usually multiple modes. To improve the monochromaticity of the perovskite microlasers, we have introduced a simple way to control the mode number in the microplates. By pushing another microplate to attach the lasing one, the number of lasing modes has been reduced and single-mode lasing emission has been realized in a microplate more than 10 μm. It is to be noted that, the additional microplate has huge loss, so it wouldn't lase during the manipulation. The corresponding extinction ratio can be more than 10 dB. Our experimental data indicates that the attached microplate would increase the loss of some lasing modes which have strong field distribution at the connected area. And the large mode spacing and the extremely narrow gain region plays a key role in formation of the single-mode lasing emission. We believe that this feasible and simple method is not limited in Fabry-Perot modes, it could be further used in other microcavities and will find its potential applications in the lead halide perovskite microplate lasers.

Abstract:Hybrid lead halide perovskites have made great strides in next-generation light-harvesting and light emitting devices. Recently, they have also shown great potentials in nonlinear optical materials. Two-photon absorption and two-photon light emission have been thoroughly studied in past two years. However, the three-photon processes are rarely explored, especially for the laser emissions. Here we synthesized high quality CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microstructures with solution processed precipitation method and studied their optical properties. When the microstructures are pumped with intense 1240 nm lasers, we have observed clear optical limit effect and the band-to-band photoluminescence at 540 nm. By increasing the pumping density, whispering-gallery-mode based microlasers have been achieved from CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microplate and microrod for the first time. This work demonstrates the potentials of hybrid lead halide perovskites in nonlinear photonic devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite based micro- and nano- lasers have been widely studied in past two years. Due to their long carrier diffusion length and high external quantum efficiency, lead halide perovskites have been considered to have bright future in optoelectronic devices, especially in the "green gap" wavelength region. However, the quality (Q) factors of perovskite lasers are unspectacular compared to conventional microdisk lasers. The record value of full width at half maximum (FWHM) at threshold is still around 0.22 nm. Herein we synthesized solution-processed, single-crystalline CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microrods and studied their lasing actions. In contrast to entirely pumping a microrod on substrate, we partially excited the microrods that were hanging in the air. Consequently, single-mode or few-mode laser emissions have been successfully obtained from the whispering-gallery like diamond modes, which are confined by total internal reflection within the transverse plane. Owning to the better light confinement and high crystal quality, the FWHM at threshold have been significantly improved. The smallest FWHM at threshold is around 0.1 nm, giving a Q factor over 5000.

Abstract:An efficient method to synthesize well-crystallized inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3, X = I or Br) with high yield and high reproducibility was proposed. Notably, the as-prepared CsPbI3 in the yellow orthorhombic phase (y-CsPbI3) can be easily converted to the black cubic perovskite phase CsPbI3 (b-CsPbI3) after thermal annealing. Furthermore, two-terminal photodetectors and all-inorganic perovskite solar cells based on b-CsPbI3 were fabricated, exhibiting high performances.

Abstract:Solution-processed organometallic halide perovskites have obtained rapid development for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells (SCs). These devices are fabricated with similar materials and architectures, leading to the emergence of perovskite-based light-emitting solar cells (LESCs). The high quality perovskite layer with reduced nonradiative recombination is crucial for achieving a high performance device, even though the carrier behaviors are fundamentally different in both functions. Here CH3NH3PbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) are first introduced into the antisolvent in solution phase, serving as nucleation centers and inducing the growth of CH3NH3PbI3 films. The heterogeneous nucleation based on high lattice matching and a low free-energy barrier significantly improves the crystallinity of CH3NH3PbI3 films with decreased grain sizes, resulting in longer carrier lifetime and lower trap-state density in the films. Therefore, the LESCs based on the CH3NH3PbI3 films with reduced recombination exhibit improved electroluminescence and external quantum efficiency. The current efficiency is enhanced by 1 order of magnitude as LEDs, and meanwhile the power conversion efficiency increases from 14.49% to 17.10% as SCs, compared to the reference device without QDs. Our study provides a feasible method to grow high quality perovskite films for high performance optoelectronic devices.
Crystallization of CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx perovskite from micro-droplets of lead acetate precursor solution

Abstract:The physical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials are greatly influenced by their composition, crystallinity, and morphology. Here, we investigate the growth of CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx perovskite from micro-droplets of a methylammonium iodide/lead acetate/dimethylformamide precursor solution added with different concentrations of PbBr2, which helps to control the morphology and crystallinity of the perovskite film. We find that both perovskite and its intermediate containing an acetate group growing from the micro-droplets. By adding some PbBr2, there is a tendency to form cubic perovskite crystals due to partial substitution of iodine with bromide. There is composition segregation when the crystals grow freely from the droplets. Smooth and uniform CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx perovskite films with a tunable band gap are thus fabricated from the precursor solution added with PbBr2.
A Simple Deposition Method for Self-Assembling Single Crystalline Hybrid Perovskite Nanostructures

Abstract:A sequential deposition method is developed, where the hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite (CH3NH3Pb (I1-x Br-x)(3)) is synthesized using precursor solutions containing CH3NH3I and PbBr2 with different mole ratios and reaction times. The perovskite achieved here is quite stable in the atmosphere for a relatively long time without noticeable degradation, and the perovskite nanowires are proved to be single crystalline structure, based on transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, strong red photoluminescence from perovskite is observed in the wavelength range from 746 nm to 770 nm with the increase of the reaction time, on account of the exchanges between I-ions and Br-ions in the perovskite crystal. Lastly, the influences of concentration and reaction time of the precursor solutions are discussed, which are important for evolution of hybrid perovskite from nanocuboid to nanowire and nanosheet.
In-plane Stimulated Emission of Polycrystalline CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Thin Films.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been investigated extensively within the last decades, for its great potential in efficient solar cells and as an ideal light source. Among the studies on stimulated emission (SE), the emission is either out-of-plane for polycrystalline films or in-plane with randomly aligned single microcrystals and nanowires. In this work, we revealed in-plane propagation of SE from bromine-based perovskite polycrystalline thin films (CH3NH3PbBr3, or MAPbBr3). The output from in-plane SE is an order higher than the out-of-plane emission. It is proposed that large crystalline flakes in the films lead to the in-plane lasing phenomena. The output coupling can be found at grain boundaries, intergrain gaps, and artificial structures. Simulative results support the experimental phenomenon that large crystalline grains are profitable for in-plane propagation and over 90% photons can be sufficiently outcoupled when the gap is larger than a micron. Considering the fabrication and handling convenience, we propose that the MAPbBr3 thin films can be easily integrated for in-plane applications as the light source for photonic chips etc.
Low-threshold Room-Temperature Continuous-Wave Optical Lasing of Single-Crystalline Perovskite in a Distributed Reflector Microcavity.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have achieved remarkable success in various optoelectronic devices. A high-quality CH3NH3PbBr3 single-crystalline thin film has been directly grown in a micrometer gap between a pair of distributed reflectors with over 99.9% reflectivity, which naturally form a vertical cavity surface-emitting laser device with a single mode or several modes. The single-crystalline perovskite has an exciton lifetime of 426 ns and evidence of the exciton-photon coupling is observed. At room temperature and under continuous-wave optical pumping conditions, this device lases at a threshold of 34 mW cm-2 in the green gap. The extremely low lasing threshold suggests that polariton lasing may occur in the strongly confined optical cavity comprising the high-quality single-crystalline perovskite.

Abstract:Shape-controlled nanomaterials are essential to diverse applications in terms of physics, chemistry, and biology due to their unique properties. However, the thermodynamic limitation of matter inherently prevents the variation and development of shape manipulation of nanomaterials based on traditional chemical methods. In this work, we present a strategy of laser-induced transient nonequilibrium thermodynamic processes for colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) synthesis in the liquid phase. Benefitting from the local high temperature and pressure induced by the pulsed laser, we successfully achieved monodispersed hexagonal CsPbBr3 NCs and cubic CsBr NCs. The band structure of hexagonal CsPbBr3 NCs is tunable by controlling the irradiation time and concentration of the precursor, showing varied photoluminescence emission in the range of 452–530 nm. The cyan hexagonal CsPbBr3 NCs (502 nm) show near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields of over 90%. Finally, the green perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the hexagonal CsPbBr3 NCs were fabricated. This work provides a method for synthesizing efficient noncubic CsPbBr3 NCs and demonstrates its promising application in LEDs.

Two‐Photon Pumped CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Microwire Lasers

Abstract:Solution‐processed lead halide perovskites have shown good applicability in both solar cells and microlasers. Very recently, the nonlinear properties of perovskites have attracted considerable research attention. Second harmonic generation and two‐photon absorption have been successfully demonstrated. However, perovskite devices based on these nonlinear properties, such as micro‐ and nanolasers have thus far not been fabricated. Here we demonstrate two‐photon pumped microlasers from CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microwires. These CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microwires are synthesized through a one‐step solution precipitation method and dispersed on a glass substrate. Under optical excitation at 800 nm, two‐photon pumped lasing action with periodic peaks is successfully observed at around 546 nm. The obtained quality (Q) factors of the two‐photon pumped microlasers are around 682, and the corresponding thresholds are about 674 µJ cm‐2. Both the Q factors and thresholds are comparable to conventional whispering‐gallery modes in two‐dimensional polygon microplates. This work is the first demonstration of two‐photon pumped microlasers in CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite microwires. We believe our finding will significantly expand the application of perovskites in low‐cost nonlinear optical devices, such as optical limiters, optical switches, and biomedical imaging devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites have recently attracted attention due to their outstanding photoelectric properties. Hence, perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices are widely studied. Herein, a simple solution‐based one‐step anti‐solvent method to produce well‐controlled and uniform CH3NH3PbBr3‐based micro‐devices is reported. It is confirmed that the size and mode numbers of the self‐assembled microdisk cavities can be well controlled by modifying the size of the SiO2 microdisks on the substrate or changing the concentration of the perovskite precursor. With this simple and robust method, the produced CH3NH3PbBr3 microdisk arrays are extremely uniform in both their size distribution and emission spectra. Moreover, a perovskite photodetector array with fast rise (<8.3 ms) and decay (<8.3 ms) times was fabricated by periodically patterning the substrate. Based on the high controllability and high reproducibility of the patterned CH3NH3PbBr3 microdisk arrays, this cost‐effective and mass‐manufacturable approach significantly increases the production yield of lead halide perovskite microdevices and boosts their ability to be used in practical applications.
Linearly Manipulating Color Emission via Anion Exchange Technology for High Performance of Amplified Spontaneous Emission of Perovskites

Abstract:The most attractive advantages of all‐inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are their optical gain over broad spectral ranges through the visible spectrum, and so are well suited to use in tunable lasers or broadband amplifiers. Most reported anion exchange reactions face a challenge to achieve the desired halogen‐variable perovskites due to rapid and uncontrollable reaction and difficulty to synthesize directly. In this study, we demonstrate a simple vapor/solid anion exchange strategy for controlling the reaction process and realizing a wide range tuning of band gap and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) wavelength, which exhibits a temperature dependent anion exchange rate. By optimizing the reaction temperature at 90°C, the ASE wavelength can be linearly manipulated by just controlling the reaction time. A clear quantitative relationship between ASE peak position and reaction time was achieved. Compared with the CsPbClBr2 film obtained via liquid phase anion exchange method, our fabricated perovskite films obtained by vapor/solid anion exchange technology exhibit superior film quality and enhanced ASE performance. Temporal-Spatial-Resolved Lasing Dynamics in Customized Solution Grown Perovskite Single-Crystal Microcavities

Abstract:Single-crystal halide perovskites are among the most promising semiconductor candidates for highly efficient optoelectronic devices due to their higher stability against moisture and light radiation and lower trap density than their polycrystalline counterparts. In this work, single-crystal MAPbBr(3) microcavities with controllable geometries and sizes are fabricated using a template-limited method combined with an anti-solvent diffusion growth method. The single-crystal microcavities emit lasers around 550 nm under femtosecond laser excitation, with a lasing threshold of & AP;35 & mu;J cm(-2) and a quality factor of 1135, as well as excellent long-term operation stability. The temporal-spatial evolution of the lasing process in an individual microcavity is achieved by the microscopic optical Kerr-gating technique. The temporal behaviors including pulse duration and build-up time, emission spectra shift, and lasing mode evolution as a function of pump fluence are unveiled, and the complex relationship between the light-induced carrier dynamics and lasing properties is clarified. Spatial heterogeneous lasing dynamics are also observed in an individual microdisk, which is attributed to the non-uniform optical losses and carrier densities driven by structural imperfections. This study can provide a fabrication strategy for perovskite on-chip optoelectronic devices, as well as a deeper understanding of the carrier-density-driven lasing dynamics in microcavities.
A Photonic Crystal Laser from Solution Based Organo-Lead Iodide Perovskite Thin Films

Abstract:Perovskite semiconductors are actively investigated for high performance solar cells. Their large optical absorption coefficient and facile solution-based, low-temperature synthesis of thin films make perovskites also a candidate for light-emitting devices across the visible and near-infrared. Specific to their potential as optical gain medium for lasers, early work has demonstrated amplified spontaneous emission and lasing at attractively low thresholds of photoexcitation. Here, we take an important step toward practically usable perovskite lasers where a solution-processed thin film is embedded within a two-dimensional photonic crystal resonator. We demonstrate high degree of temporally and spatially coherent lasing whereby well-defined directional emission is achieved near 788 nm wavelength at optical pumping energy density threshold of 68.5 ± 3.0 μJ/cm(2). The measured power conversion efficiency and differential quantum efficiency of the perovskite photonic crystal laser are 13.8 ± 0.8% and 35.8 ± 5.4%, respectively. Importantly, our approach enables scalability of the thin film lasers to a two-dimensional multielement pixelated array of microlasers which we demonstrate as a proof-of-concept for possible projection display applications.

Abstract:Adding 2-phenoxyethylamine (POEA) into a CH3NH3PbBr3 precursor solution can modulate the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite structure from bulk to layered, with a photoluminescence and electroluminescence shift from green to blue. Meanwhile, POEA can passivate the CH(3)NH(3)PbBr(3)surface and help to obtain a pure CH3NH3PbBr3 phase, leading to an improvement of the external quantum efficiency to nearly 3% in CH3NH3PbBr3 LED.
