Abstract:A multilayer dual-band coupler, based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) folded substrate integrated waveguide (FSIW) transmission line (TL), is proposed and investigated. The characterization of the CRLH FSIW and the coupling method are performed to realize a 3 dB coupler with compact size. For verification, a dual-band coupler operating at 2.4 GHz/3.8 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results are shown reasonable agreements.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:One-dimensional polarization-independent grating couplers are demonstrated with the aid of the adaptive genetic algorithm optimization. By adjusting the relative weight between the coupling efficiency and the bandwidth of the polarization-dependent loss (PDL), we control the evolution direction and customize the final performance of the device. Two specific designs are generated by giving more weight to the coupling efficiency and the PDL bandwidth, respectively. Coupling efficiencies of the first design are measured to be − 7.6 d B and − 7.9 d B at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively, while its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 25.0 nm. In contrast, the second design presents higher coupling efficiencies of − 7.6 d B and − 7.2 d B at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively. However, its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 22.0 nm.

Abstract:A unidirectional dual-wavelength-band grating coupler with one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inverse optimization method is used for the design and the grating coupler fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator chip can achieve efficient fiber-chip coupling simultaneously in the O-band and the L-band. The peak coupling efficiencies in the two bands are measured to be 19.7% and 19.5% with 3-dB bandwidths of 27 and 38-nm, respectively.

Abstract:An efficient optical coupler to transfer the signal between an optical fiber and a silicon waveguide is essential for realizing the applications of silicon photonic integrated circuits such as optical communication and optical sensing. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a two-dimensional grating coupler based on a silicon-on-insulator platform to obtain completely vertical and polarization-independent couplings, which potentially ease the difficulty of packaging and measurement of photonic integrated circuits. To mitigate the coupling loss induced by the second-order diffraction, two corner mirrors are respectively placed at the two orthogonal ends of the two-dimensional grating coupler to create appropriate interference conditions. Partial single-etch is assumed to form an asymmetric grating to obtain high directionalities without a bottom mirror. The two-dimensional grating coupler is optimized and verified with finite-difference time-domain simulations, achieving a high coupling efficiency of −1.53 dB and a low polarization-dependent loss of 0.015 dB when coupling to a standard single-mode fiber at approximately 1310 nm wavelength.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:The 2-µm waveband is becoming an emerging window for next-generation high-speed optical communication. To enable on-chip high-speed data transmission, improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by suppressing the coupling loss of a silicon chip is critical. Here, we report grating couplers for TE and TM polarized light at the 2-µm waveband. With a single-step fully etched process on the 340 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform, the devices experimentally demonstrate high coupling efficiency of -4.0 dB and 1-dB bandwidth of 70 nm for the TE polarized light, while -4.5 dB coupling efficiency and 58 nm 1-dB bandwidth for the TM polarized light. For comprehensive performance, both of them are among the best grating couplers operating in the 2-µm waveband so far. We also demonstrate 81Gbps high-speed on-chip data transmission using pulse amplitude modulation 8-level (PAM-8) signals.

Abstract:This paper mainly discusses the design and optimization of the grating coupler for the 2 gm band and selects the top layer silicon with a thickness of 0.34 gm according to the characteristics of the waveguide mode field. The TE polarization uniform grating coupler with a high coupling efficiency is achieved by scanning the etched depth and etched length, with the simulated coupling efficiency of -2.28 dB. To further improve the performance, we optimize the grating coupler with the scattering strength. ATE polarization nonuniform grating coupler with a center wavelength of 2 gm is designed. The simulated coupling efficiency of the grating coupler is -1.88 dB. The fabricated uniform grating coupler shows a center wavelength of 2 gm and a peak coupling efficiency of -5.07 dB. Experimental Demonstration of Efficient and Polarization-Diversity Fiber-Chip Coupling by 2D Grating Couplers with 193-nm DUV Lithography

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) diffractive gratings offer a polarization-independent coupling solution between optical fibers and photonic integrated circuits, with advantages including placement flexibility, ease of fabrication, and tolerance to alignment errors. In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a highly efficient 2D grating coupler fabricated with 193-nm deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography on the 220-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. An experimental peak coupling efficiency of -2.54 dB can be obtained using a minimum feature size of 180 nm, relying on the novel double-layer 2D grating structure. The proposed 2D waveguide grating is composed of a 70-nm shallow-etched hole array and a 160-nm-thick deposited polycrystalline silicon tooth array. The demonstrated design exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 23.4 nm with good positioning tolerance for optical fibers. Due to the benefits of perfectly vertical coupling configuration, the measured polarization-dependent loss in experiments is below 0.3 dB within the 3-dB working bandwidth. Our proposed double-layer 2D gratings can also be applied to other integrated optics platforms, where the grating directionality can be enhanced by optimizing the front-end-of-line process to break the vertical symmetry, thus enabling an efficient and polarization-independent coupling between optical fibers and photonic chips.

Abstract:Grating couplers that interconnect photonic chips to off-chip components are of essential importance for various optoelectronics applications. Despite numerous efforts in past decades, existing grating couplers still suffer from poor energy efficiency and thus hinder photonic integration toward a larger scale. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to achieve ultra-low-loss grating coupler by employing topological unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs). Leveraging the unidirectional emitting nature of UGRs, the useless downward radiation is greatly suppressed with no mirror placed on the bottom. By engineering the dispersion and apodizing the geometry of grating, we realize a grating coupler on 340 nm silicon-on-insulator platform with a record-low-loss of 0.34 dB and bandwidth exceeding 30 nm at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. We further show a pair of grating couplers works as optic via that interconnects two stacked photonic chips with a loss of only 0.94 dB. Our work sheds light on the feasibility of energy-efficient optical interconnect for silicon photonics, and paving the way to large-scale photonic integration for applications from optical communication to photonic computing.

Low-loss Grating Coupler with a Gradient Index-Matching Subwavelength Structure

Abstract:O-band high-efficiency grating couplers were designed, and experimentally demonstrated with novel gradient index-matching subwavelength structures to reduce the leakage loss and mode mismatch. Trapezoidal subwavelength gratings and apodization were implemented to realize the change in the gradual effective index guided by the effective medium theory and improve the coupling efficiency. The grating couplers were fabricated with a simple single-step etching process. The measured lowest coupling losses of conventional rectangular and trapezoidal SWG grating couplers were -1.93 dB and -1.72 dB in the O-band, respectively. The latter result is the lowest reported losses of single-step etched grating couplers in the O-band with a minimum feature size of 120 nm, which is the typical minimum feature size in 130 nm CMOS node commercial silicon photonic processes.

Abstract:The chip-fiber grating coupler is a fundamental building block in integrated photonics, providing convenient on-wafer testing and packaging. Couplers based on a silicon nitride (SiNx) material platform can achieve wider bandwidths than silicon-based couplers, but suffer from lower efficiency due to the relative low material refractive index. The efficiency of the SiNx grating coupler can be improved by using high-reflectivity silicon grating reflectors underneath. However, such a silicon grating reflector requires several fabrication steps, including lithography, etching, high precision alignment (HPA), and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). In this Letter, we demonstrate an easy-to-fabricate SiNx-on-SOI transverse-electric mode grating coupler requiring only one patterning step (grating alone), and without the need for HPA and CMP. A coupling coefficient of -2.5 dB and 1-dB-bandwidth of 65 nm has been experimentally measured.

Here, we propose a strategy to achieve ultralow-loss grating couplers by using unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs), suppressing the useless downward radiation with no mirror on the bottom. By engineering the dispersion and apodizing the geometry of grating, we experimentally realize a grating coupler with a record-low loss of −0.34 dB and 1-dB bandwidth exceeding 30 nm at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm and further demonstrate an optic via with a loss of only −0.94 dB. Given that UGRs ubiquitously exist in a variety of grating geometries, our work sheds light on a systematic method to achieve energy-efficient optical interconnect and paves the way to large-scale photonic integration.

Abstract:Edge coupler is a key component of silicon-based optoelectronic chips, which dramatically reduces the coupling loss between fibers and transmission waveguides. Here, we propose an ultralow-loss three-step silicon edge coupler based on a 130 nm CMOS process. By replacing the silicon substrate with a material with a lower refractive index than silicon oxide, the silicon leakage loss and polarization-dependent loss can be significantly improved. This structure avoids the existence of a cantilever, which enhances the mechanical strength of the edge coupler. Coupling with standard single-mode fiber, the simulation results demonstrate that the TE/TM mode has an ultralow loss of 0.63/1.08 dB at 1310 nm and 0.57/1.34 dB at 1550 nm, and the 0.5 dB bandwidth covering the entire communication band is about 400 nm. In the entire communication band, the polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.8 dB. Furthermore, we propose a taper shape design method based on mode analysis, which can be adapted for any taper to improve its compactness. Compared with the parabolic shape, the coupling loss of the edge coupler with a length of 460 μm for the TE mode is improved by 0.3 dB on average, this edge coupler provides a feasible solution for fiber-to-chip coupling and is perfectly suitable for wavelength division multiplexing applications in optical communications.

Abstract:To meet the demand of large transmission capacity in high-speed terahertz wireless transmission link, a broadband Orthomode Transducer (OMT) working at 275-296GHz is designed based on double-ridged waveguide junction. It is implemented in split-block using high precision CNC milling. The measured results shows that its return loss is less than -15dB and insertion loss is less than 3dB, and the polarization isolation is higher than 20dB, which can gurantee its applications in the dual-polarized antenna.

Abstract:This Letter presents both numerical and experimental results of a polarization-independent directional coupler based on slot waveguides with a subwavelength grating. The measured coupling efficiency is 97.4% for TE and 96.7% for TM polarization at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Further analysis shows that the proposed subwavelength grating directional coupler has a fabrication tolerance of +/- 20 nm for the grating structure and that the coupling efficiencies for the two polarizations are both higher than -0.5 dB (similar to 89%), exceeding the entire C-band (1525-1570 nm) experimentally. Abstract:Mid-infrared (Mid-IR) (2-20 µm) silicon photonics has attracted much attention in the past few years due to its application potential in free-space optical communications, light detection and ranging, and molecular analysis. The grating coupler technology is one of the most widely employed approaches for light coupling between optical fibers and waveguides. In the mid-IR spectral region, due to the lack of reliable chalcogenide-fiber or ZBLAN-fiber polarization controllers, grating couplers usually suffer from huge insertion losses induced by the arbitrary polarization states of light coupled out of mid-IR fibers. As a result, it is significant to explore polarization-insensitive grating coupling techniques in mid-IR wavelengths. However, the study is currently still in its infancy. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-thin mid-IR polarization-insensitive grating coupler. The grating coupler has a maximum coupling efficiency of -11.5 dB at a center wavelength of ∼2200 nm with a 1-dB bandwidth of ∼148 nm. Compared with conventional subwavelength grating couplers, the polarization-dependent loss was improved from 9.6 dB to 2.1 dB. Moreover, we demonstrated a polarization-insensitive grating coupler at 2700-nm wavelength with a maximum coupling efficiency of -12.0 dB. Our results pave the way for the development of mid-IR photonic integrated circuits.
