Abstract:A new method has been developed to investigate the bond behavior between glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rods and concrete. During the pultrusion process of the GFRP rods, some optical fiber Bragg gratings were embedded in series along the center line of the GFRP rods (OFBG-GFRP). Earlier research has demonstrated that OFBG-GFRP rod has desirable smart properties for sensing as well as reinforcement. The impact of OFBG upon the mechanical properties of GFRP rods is shown to be negligible. The direct pull-out test has been carried out on three concrete specimens with OFBG-GFRP rods. The recorded data from 14 Bragg gratings have been used to determine the bond behavior of FRP rod to concrete, together with the recorded load levels. The analytical results have revealed that bond strains distributed unevenly along the embedded depth and changed significantly with increasing load levels. The results have also indicated that the bond failure has always been triggered by either the peeling-off of some relative weak ribs along FRP rod or the crushing of FRP rod at the grip end. The data from OBFG have accounted very well for the phenomena happened during entire testing process. This proposed method is proved to be efficient without any disturbance on the interaction between concrete and FRP rod.
