Abstract:Four! That’s what golfers shout as a warning when their ball is going off target. Or so I used to think when I was small. Actually it’s ‘Fore’, which seems a bit of an old fashioned English word these days. But there’s no mistake in the title of this Editorial – we are celebrating the first impact factor for Advances in Physics: X, and it’s Five! Which is rather good, for starters. Five is an interesting number. For example, in the Bible where numbers often have a secondary, symbolic meaning, Five is the number of fellowship. In the Exodus the Israelites came out of their captivity in Egypt ‘in fives’ (Exodus 13: 18, original text). Other examples could be given, but that might be stretching even the legendary breadth of APX! And not even the most enthusiastic advocates of the project would regard our journal as spiritual! But this most encouraging marker of the successful establishment of the journal depends in every way on an International Fellowship – amongst Authors, Editors, Advisers, Referees and Staff. My grateful thanks to all who have contributed, five years after the serious work of creating the new journal began. And where next? We can only hope Onwards, Upwards and Fore-ward . . .

Abstract:The ability to store information about the past to dynamically predict and prepare for the future is among the most fundamental tasks the brain performs. To date, the problems of understanding how the brain stores and organizes information about the past (memory) and how the brain represents and processes temporal information for adaptive behavior have generally been studied as distinct cognitive functions. This Symposium explores the inherent link between memory and temporal cognition, as well as the potential shared neural mechanisms between them. We suggest that working memory and implicit timing are interconnected and may share overlapping neural mechanisms. Additionally, we explore how temporal structure is encoded in associative and episodic memory and, conversely, the influences of episodic memory on subsequent temporal anticipation and the perception of time. We suggest that neural sequences provide a general computational motif that contributes to timing and working memory, as well as the spatiotemporal coding and recall of episodes.
Mechanical memories in solids, from disorder to design

Abstract:Solids are rigid, which means that when left undisturbed, their structures are nearly static. It follows that these structures depend on history -- but it is surprising that they hold readable memories of past events. Here we review the research that has recently flourished around mechanical memory formation, beginning with amorphous solids' various memories of deformation and mesoscopic models based on particle rearrangements. We describe how these concepts apply to a much wider range of solids and glassy matter -- and how they are a bridge to memory and physical computing in mechanical metamaterials. An understanding of memory in all these solids can potentially be the basis for designing or training functionality into materials. Just as important is memory's value for understanding matter whenever it is complex, frustrated, and out of equilibrium.

Abstract:Our understanding of the history of psychiatry has been warped by the way history is remembered – collectively and personally; this is the point of departure from which Wynter, Wallis and Ellis have embarked upon this splendid essay anthology. The introduction provokes something of a liminal space by describing psychiatry as a specialty that is ever existing between 'the terrible past and the ideal future'. They argue that barbarity has become a cultural trope for psychiatry, especially when historical treatments are viewed through modern framing without the scaffolding of contemporaneous societal values. Progress seems to always be in response to wanting to heal this iniquity and provide a change in direction. The authors endeavour to show us that the actuality of psychiatry may exist somewhere between these two opposing poles, and furthermore it is interested in the idea that modern mental health services have arisen from within this in-between space. The essays loosely stick to a theme of memory and remembrance, and are arranged within five sections: governance; practitioners; case books; oral histories; and personal recollections. The various essays look at different aspects of psychiatry through different eras and across the globe, with very distinct voices and forms, but this thematic arrangement provides a sense of cohesion. However, there is no onus on the reader to read the whole collection all at once, with most of the pieces having enough strength to be considered in their own right. We see Britain's colonial footprint in the particularly provocative 'Madness, memory and delusion in late nineteenth-century Barbados', whereby Leonard Smith skilfully introduces readers to the cultural matrix of colonial Barbados, where many people were living in destitution, and then goes on to consider a series of nineteenth-century lunatic asylum case records held in the Barbados National Archive. A re-examination of these material impressions of the past acknowledges the colonial gaze through which patients were described, but also provides a new way of seeing patients and their problems, beyond the hermeneutic trouble entailed by the passage of time. A chapter about Bombay's lunatic asylums around the turn of the twentieth century readily relates to this one, but other works describing topics as far reaching as the remodelling of the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna and the nostalgia experienced by staff in the wake of an American psychiatric hospital ensure a significant breadth of content. The book ends with a devastatingly honest reflective essay by Allan Beveridge that focuses sharply upon his experience of psychiatric training in Edinburgh in the 1980s. He shares his personal sense of excitement upon embarking upon his career that gives way to unease as he faces the reality of clinical practice, and the discombobulating effect of competing explanations and opposing views that continue to persist, to a greater or lesser extent, to this day. The book grasps onto the Derridean idea that there is an ever-transforming inheritance of the past in light of changing contexts of the future, and that the key to history lies in how it is remembered. Through an exploration of remembrance, this work generates novel insights, which allow us to recast how we understand previous insights into psychiatry's past. This thought-provoking essay collection will generate enthusiasm for new ways of considering the past and reframing the present through troubling our interpretation of what has been written before. It is certainly worth reading to generate reflections on what the legacy of our own work may be.

It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from The Future of Physics by William D Phillips and What characterises topological effects in physics? by Gerard t Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. This paper is presented as a preface to exciting developments by senior and young scientists in the years that lie ahead, and a complement to the less authoritative popular accounts by journalists.

Abstract:This book represents a continuation, an elaboration, and possibly a clear explanation of the ideas which were expounded in the previous book Time and Methods in Environmental Interfaces Modeling (henceforth abbreviated as TM, Mihailovic et al 2016). In that book as well as in whole of our published scientific work we were either implicitly or explicitly driven by a need to understand how the space between the human mind and observed physical reality is bridged. Here we use synonymously the terms physical reality and reality since the reality is all of physical existence, and concepts related to it as opposed to those products of our mind which remain on the level of mind. Relying on that book we add our new experiences in research in which physics plays a dominant role. To these experiences we attached some epistemological features as well as a view of physics through the optics of Godel Incompleteness Theorems (Godel 1931). Abstract:The present article invites the reader to re-appraise the values of memory, imagination, and knowledge from a new perspective and with an abundance of various opinions, ideas, and commentaries. At the beginning of the 21st century, the growth by leaps and bounds of technology has made this re-evaluation even more relevant now that we have access to all kinds of sources of information. Such a fresh perspective becomes feasible and necessary, given the tools and possibilities offered, literally, by a wealth of sources at our fingertips. Using references available in historical documents as well as contemporary electronic and mass media communication, the discussion centers on a thorough analysis of memory and imagination with their obvious effects on the retention of knowledge. The positive outcome of such an approach is also relevant when we take a good look at the quest for knowledge and its intrinsic value. Research of material produced over centuries and millennia leads us to pursue the study of memory and imagination and, through them, perceive the acquisition of knowledge as beneficial and much-needed in the entire process of education.

Abstract:There is an increasing recognition regarding of the importance of introducing modern Einsteinian concepts early in science education. This study investigates the efficacy of an innovative educational programme "Einstein-First", which focuses on teaching Einsteinian physics at an earlier age than usual through the incorporation of appropriate hands-on activities. This paper presents an analysis of 14 to 15-year-old students' conceptualisation of Einsteinian physics and their attitudes towards science as a result of this programme. We have investigated the students' understanding of modern physics concept after a term of 20 lessons. We report on two such 20-lesson programmes, one delivered in 2013 and a second, improved programme delivered in 2014; each to 50-60 students across two classes designated by the participating high school as "academically talented" students. We found, as expected, that the students' possessed little prior knowledge of Einsteinian physics. the significant improvement in the students' knowledge, as tested before and after the course, showed that they could comprehend Einsteinian physics at the level it was given. The findings also showed that the short programme improved students' attitude towards physics.While the male students initially showed greater interest in physics compared to their female counterparts, the female students showed a significantly increased interest in physics after the programme. Also, students' memory retention of Einsteinian physics concepts was tested in two different years, one class was tested after one year of the programmes and the other was tested after three years of the programme. The results show that the Einstein-First programme had a lasting impact on the students involved in the study.

Evolutionary Studies in Imaginative Culture

Abstract:Abstract Psychology has generally had a rather stunted view of the mind. In the behaviorist era it essentially denied the existence of mind altogether, and even the cognitive revolution seemed to promote a rigid view of the mind as tied to specific inputs. This began to change when Endel Tulving proposed episodic memory as the conscious replaying of past events-a conception that was later broadened into the more general concept of mental time travel: the ability to travel mentally backward and forward in time, a basic component of imagination. The two books under review, both informed by evolutionary science, illustrate involvement of the humanities in further expanding our understanding of the imagination- the mental capacity that enables us to transcend time and space, voyage into fantasy, and cultivate the creative arts. The historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto goes so far as to suggest that human imagination expanded at the expense of memory, and was even the basis of language. The volume edited by Carroll, Clasen, and Jonsson, all literary scholars, takes us on a wider tour of the fruits of imagination-religion, music, the arts, literature. These books may help place human creativity and imagination in an evolutionary context, and enlarge our understanding of evolution itself. They may also help overcome poststructuralist attitudes that threaten the integrity of the humanities themselves.
