The Impact of Historical Urban Conservation and Development on Local Social Structure

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to explore the problems of historical urban conservation system and solution approaches in China and to try to propose the core issues which should be thought in current cultural heritage conservation. The case studies of China's two World Heritage ancient cities Pingyao and Lijiang focus on the analysis of the general phenomena in the process of historical urban conservation and development as well as its impact on the local social structure, including changes in the structure of the local economy and services, relocation and migration of the local population and the disappearance of activities from the traditional living environment. In order to solve these problems, the research analyzed of China's historical urban conservation system, proposed the "top-down" management and the "bottom-up" implementation principles, and suggested to establish a execution platform based on China's urban planning system.
