Abstract:Wind-blown sand blocking and freeze-thaw weathering of crushed rock layer (CRL) under QTR embankment in China have gradually become potential threat to its integrity and stability. They reduce the porosity of CRL and then its cooling effect. The different porosities corresponding to the different mean rock diameters were measured in laboratory, then some numerical tests were carried out to study impact of porosity on the permafrost degradation and differential thaw depth between the right and left shoulders. Results show that the decrease in porosity due to wind-blown sand blocking and rock weathering can cause the faster permafrost degradation and the asymmetrical thermal regime. The largest differential thaw depth reaches 0.76 m for the smaller porosity of 23 %. In the traditional embankment, it can reach as much as 3.1 m. The rational porosity exists which varies in the range from 34 % to 42 % corresponding to mean rock diameter ranging from 10 to 21 cm. Climate warming can leads to permafrost degradation under the CRE and the traditional embankment. However, the CRE with rational porosities can be in a stable state in the upcoming 50 years.
