Abstract:Crushed-rock embankment (CRE), which is implemented to construct roadways in permafrost regions, effectively protects underlying permafrost because natural air convection occurs within crushed-rock layer (CRL) embedded in the embankment. Considering the effect of climate warming and special geological conditions, this study investigated the impact of the porosity of the CRL on the cooling performance of the CRE through numerical modeling experiments. The results revealed that an increase in the porosity of the CRL enhanced the natural air convection within it, which was conducive to improve the cooling efficiency of the CRE and the thermal regime of subjacent soils. However, the underlying permafrost degraded obviously when the porosity of the CRL was less than 0.35, indicating that the cooling efficiency of the CRE was insufficient to offset the heat absorbed from the embankment and climate warming. Moreover, an asymmetric distribution of temperature field existed below the embankment irrespective of the porosity of the CRL, and the magnitude of this asymmetry decreased gradually with the increase in the porosity. The reason for the asymmetry is that the strong heat convection occurring on the windward side of the CRL considerably influenced the soil temperature beneath the embankment. It is hoped that the results of this study provide a useful reference for the configuration of crushed-rock structures in permafrost regions.
