Abstract:The threat of rockfall impacting bridges in mountainous areas poses a great risk to the safety of passing trains. This study delves into the dynamics of rockfall impact and its implications on the interaction between train vehicles and bridges. Leveraging LS-DYNA, this study first captured the force-time history of rockfall impact on bridge structures. Subsequently, there was a comparison with the impact forces generated at various speeds with those predicted by established formulas, validating the accuracy of simulations. Employing BANSYS software, the dynamic responses of both bridge structures and the vehicle-bridge coupling system to falling rocks were analyzed. The investigation encompassed parameters such as impact speed, position, and train location. The findings reveal that escalating impact speeds correlate with increased average and maximum impact forces from falling rocks. Notably, the average impact force does not linearly correspond with rock speed and often exceeds values calculated by conventional formulas. Impact position minimally affects maximum impact force, yet alterations in position prolong impact duration, consequently reducing average impact force. Rockfall-induced impacts precipitate notable spikes in train lateral acceleration, lateral wheelset force, wheel unloading rate, and derailment coefficient, albeit with a comparatively lesser impact on vertical acceleration. Increasing impact speed and altering position intensifies the vehicle's response, particularly when the train is in close proximity to the impact site.
Numerical simulation analysis of dynamical performance of equipment protecting from ship-bridge collision

Abstract:Nonlinear FEM with momentary display function is applied to simulating the collision process of ship-collision protection of bridge. Many characters are taken into account, such as material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity, contact nonlinearity, movement nonlinearity and coupling characters among them etc. Based on the ANSYS/LS-DYNA nonlinear FEM program, the dynamical performances of collision protection of the Dong-tou Bridge over sea are simulated at all kinds of collision. The history of losing kinetic energy and collision force of ship are obtained; at the same time,the course of absorbing energy and deformation of collision protection are acquired at different collision angle and at different collision velocity. The results of the collision simulation can help the engineers to obtain an optimal design of the collision protection equipment.

Abstract:Finite-element simulations were used to investigate the structural demands generated by a truck colliding with a bridge pier. A reduced coupled mass-spring-damper model is proposed to simulate the collision process. The model is calibrated to the simulation data and accounts for key variables, such as truck weight, impact speed, and pier characteristics. Through comparisons to detailed finite-element analysis, the reduced model is shown to be able to reasonably represent the behavior of a set of coupled vehicle-bridge systems. On the basis of the simulation results, an argument is made that a standard design truck can be specified for impact design. (C) 2016 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:Cracking frequently encountered in railway bridges can lead to significant changes in bridge dynamic characteristics and further dynamic performance of train–bridge interaction (TBI) system. It is desirable to develop an effective method to understand the dynamic behavior of coupled train and cracked bridge systems. This paper proposes a framework for coupled vibration analysis of train and cracked bridge systems using multiscale finite element modeling. A multiscale bridge model adopting frictional surface–surface contact to characterize nonlinear breathing phenomenon of the crack is incorporated into the three-dimensional coupled TBI model. Subsequently, a multiloop numerical solution strategy is formulated to solve the established dynamic equation of coupled train and cracked bridge systems. The proposed framework is used to analyze the cracked beams presented in the literature, and the obtained and literature data are compared. Moreover, an actual heavy-haul railway bridge is taken as an illustrative example, in which vehicle dynamic response, bridge vibration, and train running safety index are calculated considering various crack types, train speeds, and track conditions. The results show that apart from the bridge displacement and acceleration, the presence of crack can have a large influence on the vehicle acceleration response, derailment factor, and offload factor. Differences larger than ±10% in the maximum dynamic indices associated with the intact and cracked bridges are observed, indicating the necessity of considering the crack damage in train–bridge coupled dynamic analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic response analysis of long-span continuous bridge under earthquake and train load was simultaneously performed. In order to clearly reveal the mechanism of vibration coupling between vehicles and highway long-span continuous bridge, a numerical model including soil foundation, vehicle and bridge under inclined seismic wave was established utilizing finite element software. The dynamic response of the bridge with different wave incident angles and different train speeds was numerically analyzed. The results show that the wave incident angles have a significant effect on the dynamic response of the bridge, and with the increasing of the wave incident angle, the vertical displacement and velocity as well as the acceleration of mid-span constantly increase. While the dynamic response of the bridge does not increase always with the increasing of train speed, however, at a certain train speed, the dynamic response will reach the maximum. With the increasing of the train speed, the vertical displacements of mid-span points increase while the moments at mid-span reduce significantly when the soil–structure dynamic interaction was considered. The results can provide significant references to ensure the train safe running on the bridges under the earthquake.

Abstract:<span>This paper presents random dynamic analysis on a high-speed train moving over a long-span cable-stayed bridge. In the study, the train, slab track, and bridge are regarded as an integrated system, each vehicle is modelled as a four-wheelset mass-spring-damper system with 10 degrees of freedom (DOFs), and the rail and track slabs are modelled as Euler-Bernoulli beams supported by spring-damper elements. The long-span cable-stayed bridge model is established by the ANSYS software, based on which its frequencies and mode shapes are exported and implemented into the dynamics programme executed in the MATLAB platform. The train and substructures are coupled via nonlinear wheel–rail interaction and the large-scale dynamics model is solved by means of a fast explicit integration algorithm. Several numerical examples are performed involving modal convergence study, the effect of train speeds on system dynamic responses and stochastic analysis based on the probability density evolution method.</span>

Abstract:This paper presents a framework to systematically investigate the high-speed train–track–bridge dynamic interactions, aiming to provide a method for analysing and assessing the running safety and the ride comfort of trains passing through bridges, which are critically important for the design of new high-speed railway bridges. Train–track–bridge interactive mechanism is illustrated. A fundamental model is established for analysing the train–track–bridge dynamic interactions, in which the vehicle subsystem is coupled with the track subsystem through a spatially interacted wheel–rail model; and the track subsystem is coupled with the bridge subsystem by a track–bridge dynamic interaction model. Modelling of each subsystem and each interactive relationship between subsystems are presented. An explicit–implicit integration scheme is adopted to numerically solve the equations of motion of the large non-linear dynamic system in the time domain. Computer simulation software named the train–track–bridge interaction simulation software (TTBSIM) is developed to predict the vertical and lateral dynamic responses of the train–track–bridge coupled system.

Abstract:Advances in Structural Engineering, Ahead of Print. The dynamic performance and safety of both the train and the bridge are great concerns for long-span bridges subjected to crosswinds. For railway bridges, there is track laid on the bridge deck. The wind, train, track, and bridge subsystems form a complicated coupling system. This paper presents the dynamic responses of both the train and the bridge under crosswinds based on a wind-train-track-bridge coupled model, in which the vibration effect of the track structure involved in the coupling system is especially considered. For studying the dynamic responses of both the train and the bridge, models of railway vehicle dynamics are used for the train and a three-dimensional finite element model is used for the bridge. The train-track interaction and the track-bridge interaction are respectively considered. The wind action on the train and the bridge consists of a steady-state force and an unsteady-state force. Based on an in-situ test, the proposed numerical wind-train-track-bridge model involving the vibration effect of the track is validated. Then, the application of this proposed model on a long-span cable-stayed bridge on the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong HSR (high-speed railway) is presented as a case study. The typical running train and track currently serving in the Chinese railway transportation system are modeled in this study. Excitations from track irregularities are also taken into account. Finally, with the proposed wind-train-track-bridge coupled model, the dynamic performance of both the train and the bridge subjected to crosswinds are investigated.

Tests for Collision Between Over-High Trucks and Steel Bridge Superstructures

Abstract:Due to frequently happening collisions between over-high trucks and bridge superstructures in urban transportation system, scaled model tests for collision between over-high trucks and steel bridges with box-section and ∏-section were designed and conducted. The corresponding nonlinear dynamic finite element analyses were implemented to simulate the collision tests. The results indicated that even subjected to the same collision load, different bridges have different failure modes obviously; the failure mode of a steel box-section bridge is dominated by global deformation, while the failure mode of a steel ∏-section bridge is dominated by local punching deformation. The simulated results with the proposed finite element model agreed well with the test ones.

Abstract:Research purposes: Precise prediction for mechanical behavior of the bridge under ship collision force is important to assess the analysis of train derailment after hitting the pier. This paper focuses on the Tongling Yangtze River Bridge Combined Road with Railway for ship collision simulation,uses the nonlinear finite element software of ANSYS / LS-DYNA to simulate the ship's bow section of 10 000 t and 5 000 t class hitting bridge tower column at front and axle to 20° of side in highest navigable water level,conventional navigable water level and the minimum navigable water level. Curves of collision force-period at different working conditions are summarized. On this basis,when the impact load affects as input loads,the displacement and acceleration response can be used by finite element analysis under the collision and study the dynamic response of the bridge caused by a train derailment risk.Research conclusions:(1) The impact force of the bridge is largest when a laden ship is hitting the pier at the highest navigable water level. In the most unfavorable condition,the collision have lardge impact on bridge structure and derailment risk of trains.(2) The transverse acceleration of the girder on the top of 2#pier can reach to 0. 922 m /s2,but it does not exceed acceleration excitation limit(1 m /s2) when 3#piers are hitted by the 10 000 t ship at the peakload of collision,so the probability of train derailment is minimal.( 3) Based on the probability formula of the derailment by simplifying risk criteria,the derailment probability of train is 9 × 10-5~ 1. 5 × 10-4during the ship-bridge collision.(4) The research results can provide the reference for train traffic safety on railway bridge caused by ship collisions.

Abstract:Railway bridges are built to allow trains to cross over highways, valleys, or other transportation infrastructure. In recent years, the number of railway bridges subjected to over-height collision forces has increased. These collisions damage the bridge and affect the safety of the running train. In this investigation, first, a 3D GT26 train-track-bridge interaction model was created to study the effects of collision forces applied to the bridge superstructure and not to the bridge piers as a novelty of this research using the finite element analysis. Then, the dynamic responses of the railway bridge due to the GT26 train load and subjected to over-height collision forces were obtained. Finally, the different sensitivity analyses describe that changing the length of the collision area, the bridge span, and the value of collision forces affect the dynamic responses of the bridge in the contact area. The results show that maximum lateral displacement of the concrete girder in case of assuming the GT26 train 3D model plus over-height collision force is 8.88% less than the case in which considering only freight train axle-load and same over-height collision force apply to the bridge superstructure, and its value reduces from 45 mm to 41 mm. The maximum lateral displacement of the bridge deck is reduced by about 71% by increasing the collision area length from 0.2 m to 1.2 m and at the impact area rises about 43.5% by changing collision speed from 48 km/hr to 144 km/hr as collision force from 7753 kN to 13370 kN.

Damage Model of Bridge Bearing and Its Influence on Train-Track-Bridge Dynamic System

Abstract:Bridge bearing damage is unavoidable in railway engineering. This work presents an investigation on the damage model of bridge bearing and its influence on the dynamic responses of the high-speed train-track-bridge system. Primarily, the mathematical description of bridge bearing damage model is explained in detail, which is then compared with the traditional linear model. Then a 3D train-track-bridge dynamic model considering bearing damage is established based on the train-track-bridge dynamic interaction theory. Adopting the model, the influences of single-point-damage and multi-point-damage on the dynamic behaviors of the coupled system are deeply investigated. Results show that the calculated obtained by the proposed model and the traditional linear model are different, especially in frequency-domain. Compared to results of traditional linear model, the results obtained by the proposed model are smaller due to the additional damping effect. Bridge bearing damage has almost no influence on the train vibrations, while has great effect on bridge vibrations. The damage in z-direction mainly affects the vertical vibrations, while damage in y-direction mainly influences the lateral vibrations. Among all the damaged bearings in this work, the influence of damage in x-direction has the least influence on the system. The damage in the fixed bearing is larger than that in other bearings, indicating that more attentions should be paid to the health monitoring of fixed bearings in railway engineering.

Abstract:AbstractThe dynamic responses of track-ground system subjected to moving train passages are investigated by the substructure method. The whole system is divided into two separately formulated substructures, the track and the ground. The rail is described by introducing the governing function for an infinitely long Euler beam subjected to the action of moving axle loads of the train and the reactions of the sleeper. Sleepers are represented by a continuous mass and the effect of the ballast is considered. The soil is considered as fully saturated poroelastic medium and governed by Biot's theory. Using the double Fourier transform, the governing equations of motion are then solved analytically in the frequency-wave-number domain. The expressions of the rail displacement, the rail acceleration, the excess pore water pressure and soil stresses in the time domain are evaluated by the inverse Fourier transform. In particular, the effects of the rail rigidity are studied systematically. Computed results show that dynamic responses of the track-ground system are considerably affected by the rail rigidity as well as the load velocity.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. Dynamic analysis of high-speed train–track–bridge (TTB) system presents engineering challenges, particularly under complex conditions like track irregularity and crosswinds. Achieving a balance between computational efficiency and accuracy using the traditional substructure method, i.e. modeling the train and track–bridge separately and possibly performing iterations between them, can be difficult. In this paper, a practical unified three-dimensional (3D) TTB model is presented by using two coordinate systems: a stationary system for the track–bridge, and a moving system for the high-speed train. A wheel–rail interaction (WRI) element model is further extended such that the wheel and rail nodes in WRI element belong to moving and stationary systems, respectively, so as to make the train and track–bridge models consistently combined into one unified model. The unified modeling method simplifies computations and improves efficiency and stability. The modeling method has been implemented into an open source finite element platform, i.e. OpenSees, and applied for dynamic response analysis of a train traveling at 50[math]m/s over a seven-span simply supported bridge. Running safety assessments are performed using three criteria, i.e. the Nadal criterion, Prud'homme criterion and unloading criterion, considering track irregularities and crosswind loads. The analysis results provide practically useful references for engineering.

Abstract:Abstract The development of materials engineering has facilitated the design of slender, light bridges replacing standard construction materials with others, which fulfil their purpose both in terms of structural behaviour and safety. This article focuses on the presentation of the problems related to the modelling of bridges and their loads modelling train passages, as well as an analysis of the influence of load parameters on the dynamic response of a structure. The problem has become essential with the development of materials engineering which enabled the design of slender and light bridges according to the assumptions of sustainable development. The article contains a number of numerical analyses which allowed the verification of the developed finite element bridge model (frame and plate-frame types) in terms of the possibility of using them at the design stage. The load was modelled as a system of concentrated forces, the so-called moving load (ML) model. The results obtained from theoretical analyses were compared with in situ measurements of the existing bridge subjected to the load variable in time (set of locomotives ST43 and ST45 and locomotive EP09). It has been found that in dynamic analysis, modelling of the load is essential. A simplified load model such as ML can be used when displacement values are the only results analysed in detail. ML and finite element plate and frame models give high accordance of the displacement results.

Abstract:The underground railway coupling analysis model was established and used to study the dynamic response of track systems and saturated soil. The model was divided into four parts，the moving train，floating-slab tracks，liner and saturated ground. The train load was simulated by a series of moving constant or harmonic load in accordance with the geometry of a real train. The tracks consisted of an upper Euler-Bernoulli beam to account for the rails and a lower Euler-Bernoulli beam to account for the slab. By adopting the method of 2.5D FEM，the elastic theory and the Biot’s theory were used to simulate the liner and saturated porous medium respectively. The floating-slab tracks and soil medium were coupled by the boundary conditions at the tunnel invert. The three-dimensional time-space domain dynamic response was obtained from the fast inverse Fourier transform (IFFT). Computed results show that with increasing train velocity and self-vibration frequency of the moving harmonic load，the dynamic responses of the ground surface increase obviously. The maximum ground surface responses generated by the moving constant load are located directly over the tunnel centerline with a constant space attenuation rate. The dynamic responses of ground surface induced by moving harmonic load are larger than those induced by moving constant load and become the strongest at certain distances from the tunnel centerline. The distribution of velocity spectrum for the rail and ground surface is centered on self-vibration frequency of the harmonic load.
Dynamic analysis of a coupled steel-concrete composite box girder bridge-train system considering slip and shear-lag

Abstract:<p>A model considering slip and shear-lag for the dynamic analysis of a coupled steel-concrete composite bridge-train system is proposed in this paper, based on the finite element method and Euler-Bernoulli theory. The stiffness matrix, damping matrix, mass matrix, wheel-rail contact force matrix and the equations of motion of the coupled system considering slip and shear-lag are derived based on energy theory. In addition, a solver for dynamic analysis of the coupled system considering slip and shear-lag is compiled by using the Newmark-β method. To verify the rationality of the dynamic analysis model, field-test data for this type of coupled system from literature is compared with the data calculated by the improved model, and good agreement is found. The influence of slip and shear-lag on the dynamic response of the coupled system is studied in detail through a case study. The analysis proves that these factors (slip and shear-lag) substantially affect the dynamic response of the coupled system. This model proposed in this paper provides an efficient tool to analyze of the influence of slip and shear-lag on the dynamic response of coupled steel-concrete composite bridge-train systems.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, a 3-D interaction model of a railway rush-repair girder with running trains is established, in which the vehicle subsystem is modeled by rigid body dynamics method; the bridge subsystem is modeled by finite element method; the track irregularities are used as the self-excitations of the train-bridge system. Taking the Type-87 through steel truss girder bridge as the case study, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge are analyzed, and the whole histories of the train running on bridges are simulated. The dynamic responses of the bridges under the running train are computed, and some useful conclusions are obtained. The proposed method provides a possible way to further research the dynamic characteristics of the rush-repair truss girder and the running safety of the train on the bridge.

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of the paper titled “Fatigue assessment of a composite railway bridge for high speed trains-Part I: modeling and fatigue critical details” with the emphasis on conditions for which a dynamic analysis is needed for a fatigue assessment of the bridge. In part I, a fatigue assessment of the Sesia viaduct is performed by using both a static analysis and a dynamic analysis with a moving load model; fatigue damage levels of several concerned details are calculated and the fatigue critical details are identified. It is found that dynamic effects induced by the high speed trains reveal a big influence on the fatigue damage of the bridge. In this paper, conditions under which a dynamic analysis should be considered for the fatigue assessment of a bridge are investigated. Three different alternatives are considered: a static analysis taken into account a dynamic amplification factor, a dynamic analysis with a moving load model, or a dynamic analysis with multi-body models for the train vehicles include the train–bridge interaction effect. The effect of several parameters related to the train and the bridge is studied. The train speed and the mass ratio between the train and the bridge are identified as significant factors that determine the dynamic effect on the fatigue damage of the bridge.
