Abstract:To facilitate the achievement of the carbon neutrality goal, this study proposed a novel technological route for combined heat and power generation (CHP) system based on a solar-gas assisted thermo-photovoltaic (TPV) device to achieve fossil fuel savings and low-grade solar energy efficient utilization. A thermal-balance model is developed for system calculation and investigation. The effects of key parameters such as concentration ratio, tube receiver area, emitter area on the efficiency and electric-to-heat ratio of CHP system are determined, and the effects of the addition of solar energy on fuel and energy savings are analyzed. The results show that the addition of solar energy can not only increase the output power of TPV system by 40.15 kW/m2 and the TPV system electrical efficiency by more than 14 percentage points, but also can save up to 72.60 % of fuel and 39.72 % of energy. Moreover, each parameter should be designed rationally for different demands to control the electric-to -heat ratio to bring out the maximum potential of CHP systems. This study provides a reference for the design and application of TPV technology.

Abstract:Urban air pollution has become a pressing challenge in recent times, demanding innovative solutions. This review delves into the potential of Solar Chimney Power Plants (SCPPs) as a sustainable approach to mitigating air pollution. The idea of mitigation of pollution may be an added advantage to the use of SCPPs in practice. Recent advancements, such as the integration of photocatalytic reactors (PCRs) for the elimination of greenhouse gases (GHGs), emphasizing the importance of addressing non-CO2 GHGs like CH4 and N2O are analyzed. The novelty of this review is that it not only focuses on the shifting and removal of particulate matter but also on the removal of greenhouse gases. Numerous case studies, ranging from filter-equipped SCPPs to Solar-Assisted Large-Scale Cleaning Systems (SALSCSs), are reviewed, providing a comprehensive understanding of their design, performance, and potential benefits. This review serves as a guide for researchers and policymakers, emphasizing the need for multifaceted approaches to address the intricate nexus of air pollution, renewable energy generation, and climate change mitigation.

Abstract:In the view of the complex environment of high altitude areas, a solar chimney power plant experimental setup with a chimney 15 m in height and a collector 15 m in diameter was built. The temperature and velocity of air flow within the collector were tested and analyzed. The results show that the variation of air flow temperature and velocity are similar to the solar radiation. Furthermore, the energy storage layer provides an efficient energy supply for supporting continuous operation at night. The air flow temperatures at different locations inside the collector are different. From the comparison results of air temperature within the collector along each direction, the air temperature in the west side is relatively large and the temperature in the north side is relatively low due to the geographical reason.

Abstract:Solar chimney power plant (SCPP) is an ingenius concept of harnessing the solar energy for the electrical power generation, provided their efficiency is enhanced significantly. The present work focuses on the improvement of the power generation and efficiency of the plant. A finite volume CFD code is developed in FORTRAN to deal with the axisymmetric domain of the SCPP. The effect of chimney divergence angle, collector height and a novel arc and fillet radius at the chimney base is studied. For the study, an SCPP with 3 m collector diameter and 3 m chimney height with 0.05 m radius of the chimney is considered. The height of the collector is optimised and found to be 0.04 m. Diverging the chimney results in more updraft which leads to more pressure difference and increased air velocity. Also, after an optimum divergent angle, further increasing the divergence angle results in a severe reverse flow at the chimney outlet. It is observed that 2o divergent chimney is optimum which enhances air velocity by 59% and produces 290% more power than the conventional SCPP. Further improvement in the power is noticed by using the arc and fillet radii at the chimney bottom. After extensive analysis of the flow parameters, an optimum value of arc and fillet radii is proposed to be 0.1 m and 0.01 m respectively. It is noticed that for this optimum case, maximum available power is about 122% higher than the 2o divergent chimney case without any arc or fillet. The proposed design has produced an overall increment of 770% in the maximum available power of the plant and about 154% increment in the mass flow rate compared to the base case. The proposed design also enhances the collector and chimney efficiencies by about 49% and 76% respectively.

Abstract:With energy resources being fossil fuel-based, increasing energy production has already reached levels that threaten human health. In this situation, the use of alternative energy sources is seen as the only solution. Solar energy is seen as the most promising source among these alternative energies in terms of its potential. Hence, therefore, this study focuses entirely on one of the solar energy sources. This research aims to assess the impact of the design and underground additional heat source (AHS) on the system performance based on the Manzanares pilot plant (MPP), the first on-site practice of solar chimney power plants. Divergent chimney-SCPP with sloping collector (DISCPP) is analysed in the present work. For DISCPP, the influence of the underground AHS in the range of 50–250 °C on the system outputs is examined. The study demonstrates a remarkable enhancement in power output (PO), with the plant generating 51,545 kW under the reference case conditions. The findings signify that when utilising the DISCPP system, the output soars to 247,672 kW under identical climatic conditions. During sunless hours, a PO of 61,956 kW is achieved with the DISCPP at an underground AHS temperature of 50 °C. Moreover, when the source temperature reaches 250 °C during sunless hours, the DISCPP system continues to deliver a significant output of 450 kW. These outcomes underscore the exceptional performance and reliability of the DISCPP system, even under varying conditions.

Abstract:Abstract The fact that energy sources are heavily dependent on fossil fuels increases the need for alternative energy day by day. Solar energy is the most popular alternative energy source with massive potential. Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) are one of the systems of interest based on solar energy. SCPP systems are rare systems that can provide 24-hour power output. Their performance has been the subject of constant research since the first pilot plant in Manzanares. Design is crucial for performance figures of SCPPs, and the limitation of climatic parameters causes the system to be approached with different designs. This study makes a 3D CFD model by combining the divergent chimney and convergent collector structure based on the first pilot plant. The solar ray tracing algorithm and the RNG k-e turbulence model are applied and the model equations are solved under dynamic conditions with the reliable software ANSYS FLUENT. After the mesh-independent solution of the model is complete, it is validated with experimental data. The two cases are compared for solar radiation of 1000 W/m2 and environmental temperature of 293 K. A power output of 50.51 kW is achieved for standard pilot sizing. With the new model, the power output rises to 146.34 kW. It is seen that the divergent chimney and convergent collector affect the airflow in the system, increasing the maximum air velocity to 19.363 m/s. In parallel with the experimental data, it is seen that the temperature on the ground exceeds 360 K in the CFD results.

Abstract:The chimney junction of Solar Chimney Power Plant (SCPP) was the main element coupled the solar collector to the chimney. It presents an important impact on the SCPP design, which is change the airflow direction. The numerical code "ANSYS Fluent" was used in this study to investigate how the chimney Junction radius affected the local airflow characteristics and the turbine site. Using test results from an experimental prototype constructed in Sfax, Tunisia, the numerical method was validated and verified. For four setups with various chimney connection radii, thermodynamic variables such as distributions of the total pressure, static temperature, static pressure, and magnitude velocity were examined. Also, the influence of these parameters on the air turbulence was analyzed through the transition zone. The results showed that the local airflow characteristics and therefore the SCPP efficiency were significantly impacted by changes in junction radius. Besides, the maximum velocity inside the chimney was varied and changes its location when the junction radius changed. These facts affect directly the overall turbine expenditure, which represented in terms of structure and power capacity.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) exploit solar radiation to create an up-draft airflow to run a turbine. This article proposes an innovative design of an SCPP that consists of transparent glass covered solar collector. Outdoor experiments have been carried out in the arid climates of Tikrit city, Iraq, with galvanized metal tower installed instead of conventional PVC solar towers. Performance of the SCPP has been studied with and without transparent cover for collector periphery heights of 2 and 4 cm. Measurements of ambient temperature, chimney inlet temperature, interior and outlet air temperatures, humidity, air mass flow rate, and solar irradiance values were recorded from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm throughout the month of May 2021. Results show that the solar chimney collector with a periphery height of 2 cm performed better than that with the 4-cm periphery height. In addition, using transparent cover in SCPP increases the air outlet temperature by 16.4°C and air flowrate augments by around 34%. Thermal efficiency of the solar chimney with non-covered tower is found to be 10.3% whereas for a glass covered tower it increases to 14.6%, which is a remarkable 41% enhancement. Likewise, mechanical and electrical power output augment by 39.6% and 40.3% using transparent cover in SCPP. Such innovation in SCPP design is proven apposite for hot arid climates.

Abstract:Developing high-efficiency solar photothermal conversion and storage (SPCS) technology is significant in solving the imbalance between the supply and demand of solar energy utilization in time and space. Aiming at the current research status in the field of SPCS, this review thoroughly examines the phase change materials and substrates in SPCS systems. It elucidates the design principles and methods of SPCS integrated composites. Comparatively, it analyzes the parameters of various types of SPCS composites in terms of photothermal conversion, thermal conductivity, energy density, and cycling stability. Additionally, the review discusses the trade-offs between each parameter to achieve the most optimal effect of SPCS. By sorting out the current status of the application of SPCS technology in solar thermal/photovoltaic, aerospace, buildings, textile, and other industries, this analysis clarifies the requirements for various latent heat, phase change temperature, and other properties under different environmental conditions. Through a comprehensive discussion of SPCS technology, this paper accurately captures the development trend of efficiently and comprehensively utilizing solar energy by analyzing existing scientific problems. It identifies bottlenecks in SPCS technology and suggests future development directions that need focused attention. The insights gained from this analysis may provide a theoretical basis for designing strategies, enhancing performance, and promoting the application of SPCS.

Abstract:This paper presents a solar chimney that acts as a heat accumulator. It is based on its alternating charging (melting of the phase change material—PCM) and discharging (solidification), which helps to save energy and ensures stable operation of the solar chimney. In this paper, special attention has been paid to the heat dissipation process (solidification of the PCM). The theoretical model of solidification has been solved in an original way. This paper presents a new simple theoretical model for the solidification of the PCM on a flat plate and presents the results of numerical tests. The theoretical model presents a method for determining the heat transfer coefficient at the solidification front of the PCM. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient from the flowing air to the outer surface of the solidifying front plate was determined experimentally in an original way. The heat transfer coefficient values resulting from the experiments may be employed in order to calculate the heat transfer coefficient for air flowing through the slot of the collector in the solar chimney. The calculated value of the heat transfer coefficient was 18.55 W/m2K.

Abstract:Solar energy is an attractive renewable energy option for countries located in the tropical region. Harvesting this energy using simple yet innovative technologies such as solar chimney power plants (SCPP) will help the developing countries in meeting their sustainable development goals. In an SCPP, air is heated under a greenhouse collector and the hot air is passed to a chimney, where it drives a turbine while rising up. Research efforts have been directed in the past at improving the performance and power output of an SCPP by varying its geometric parameters. The chimney height of a previously optimized solar chimney power plant, having a divergent chimney, was increased from 4 to 6 m and then to 8 m in this first experimental work of this kind. The temperature variations inside the collector, along the chimney height, the velocity at the turbine section, the power available and the output power of an air turbine, estimated by applying mechanical load, are compared for the three chimney heights. The temperature rise of the air inside the collector was the highest for the 4 m tall SCPP and reduced as the chimney height was increased to 6 and 8 m due to the lower time of stay of air in the collector for greater chimney heights. Along the height of the divergent chimney, the temperature dropped with the maximum drop occurring for the 8 m tall SCPP indicating a lower enthalpy loss at the chimney exit. The air velocity at the turbine section was found to increase with chimney height for given solar insolation/time of the day due to the higher driving force which is the buoyancy effect produced by the hot air. The maximum turbine output power for the 8 m tall SCPP increased by 252% compared to the 4 m tall SCPP indicating that significant improvement in the power output can be achieved by increasing the height of a divergent chimney SCPP. An average power of about 40 kW will be available for a chimney height of 100 m which will be extremely beneficial for the sustainable development of small islands.

Abstract:The solar chimney power plant system (SCPPS) is a clean and pollution-free facility for generating electric power. To further improve the heat collection efficiency of SCPPS, reduce the influence of external unsteady environment crosswind, a bank of transparent baffles was proposed to be installed at the entrance of transparent cover in SCPPS. Combined with the discrete ordinates (DO) radiation model and solar load model in Fluent, the latitude and longitude of Hohhot and actual weather parameters were taken as boundary conditions. Numerical simulation of SCPPS model with external air domain and different number of baffles were carried out. The accuracy of numerical simulation was verified by experimental results. There are three different types of models discussed here: the SCPPS with no baffle, the SCPPS with one baffle, the SCPPS with two baffles. Under the condition of different baffle number, the distribution of temperature, velocity, pressure, turbulence and heat collecting efficiency were given to determine the optimal baffle number. The results show that the average temperature of chimney inlet with one baffle and two baffles are 0.92% and 3.92% higher than that with no baffle, respectively; the average velocity of chimney inlet with one baffle and two baffles are 11.83% and 18.70% higher than that with no baffle, respectively; the average collector efficiency of one baffle and two baffles are 28.45% and 58.52% higher than that of without baffle, respectively. Compared with without baffle and one baffle, adding two baffles can more effectively reduce the heat loss of SCPPS in Hohhot under different environmental crosswind speeds, and alleviate the negative effects of environmental crosswind.

Abstract:A numerical simulation was developed to study the behavior of the airflow characteristics inside the solar chimney power plant (SCPP). A two-dimensional (2D) steady model has been carried out using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS Fluent 17.0. In this chapter, five turbulence models were tested to present the airflow characteristics distribution such as the magnitude velocity, temperature, pressure, and turbulence characteristics. The above work showed that the turbulence model types have a direct effect on the numerical results. Computational results were compared to the experimental data found by Kasaeian et al. (2014) to choose the adequate model.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel solar chimney power plant combined with membrane distillation (SCPPMD) was proposed. SCPPMD could not only achieve power output but also product more freshwater, by installing a novel air gap membrane distillation module vertically in the disc distiller. A transient heat and mass model was established to predict the system performance. Then, the operation laws of SCPPMD under unsteady weather conditions and the effect of seawater thickness were explored. The results show that the peak power generation is about 4p.m. and the peak water yield lags two hours. The hourly water yield of the membrane is much higher than that of the disc distiller and its valley value reaches 11.55 t/h, 14.26 times the valley value of the disc distiller and 0.875 times its peak value. Membrane distillation still has considerable freshwater output even when the water production of disc distiller is weak. As the seawater layer thickens, the peak-valley difference of power generation is reduced and the daily power generation drops; The peak hourly water yield of disc distiller drops, the valley value increases and its daily water yield drops; Both the peak and valley value of membrane hourly water yield increase, and its daily water yield rises; The change of the system water yield is basically the same as that of membrane.

Abstract:Recently several mathematical models of a solar chimney power plant were derived, studied for a variety of boundary conditions, and compared against CFD calculations. The importance of these analyses is about the accuracy of the derived pressure drop and output power equation for solar chimney power plant systems (SCPPS). We examine the assumptions underlying the derivation and present reasons to believe that some of the derived equations, specifically the power equation in this model, may require a correction to be applicable in more realistic conditions. The analytical resutls are compared against the available experimental data from the Manzanares power plant.

Abstract:The working principle and status quo of research for five main kinds of solar energy thermal power generation system,namely tower type,trouph type,dish type,solar energy hot gas flow type,and solar energy pool,have been presented.Comparison of advantages and disadvantages for above-mentioned solar energy thermal power generation systems shows that as in the following:the tower type system has high light concentration ratio,large capacity of system,and high efficiency,but expenses being very high;the trough type system has simple structure,but the light concentration ratio being small,and the working temperature in the system being lower;the dish type system has large light concentration ratio,high system efficiency,compact structure,and convenience in installation,but large difficulty in techique of its key part i.e.the Sterlin engine;the solar energy hot gas flow power generation and the solar energy pool,as well as the downward reflecting type solar energy thermal power generation etc.,each has its own superiority in technical aspects.

Abstract:Solar chimney as a reliable renewable energy system has attracted increasing attention from engineers to conquer the current energy crisis. The main challenge of designing a solar chimney is to optimize its performance with the lowest cost. Based on literature review, thirteen key influencing factors were obtained and classified into four groups, including configuration, installation conditions, material usage, and environment. Statistics of experimental studies showed that the overall tested range is still limited which suggests more future experiments. To enhance the performance, a solar chimney is suggested with possible high cavity and solar radiation, a cavity gap of 0.2–0.3 m, equal inlet and outlet, a height/gap ratio of around 10, an inclination angle of 45–60° (for roof solar chimney considering latitude), an appropriate opening of room, double/triple glazing, a 5 cm thick insulation wall, and a solar absorber with larger absorptivity and emissivity. These optimum values may not be applicable to all configurations as they are interdependent. Although external wind shows significant influence on solar chimney, solar chimney design can be undertaken without considering the effects from wind. This review will provide a useful technical guide for researchers and professionals regarding the optimum designs of solar chimney in buildings.

Abstract:An integrated solar combined cycle system (ISCCS) basically consists of three major components: a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT), solar steam generator (SSG) and solar field. The solar tower (ST) technology is one of the potential candidates that can provide the solar field. In this study, progress in the development of a ST-ISCCS has been investigated. It is found that a lot of research attention has been given to the ST technology with some commercial ST power plants operating in different parts of the world. This technology has enormous potential for integration with the ISCCS from thermodynamic and economic perspectives. Nevertheless, the maturity level of the ST technology is lower than that of the parabolic trough concentrator (PTC). Very limited research has been directed toward the development of the ST-ISCCS. In addition, most of the ISCCS power plants in operation today employ the PTC technology with no known commercial ST-ISCCS power plant existing at present (2015). In view of this, it is construed that there are some barriers to the development of the ST-ISCCS technology which broadly fall into three categories: (a) technology maturity, (b) financial and policy, and (c) technical factors. It is concluded that the ST-ISCCS is immature, and so more work is needed to improve its technological readiness.

Abstract:A solar updraft tower power plant—sometimes also called “solar chimney” or just “solar tower”—is a solar thermal power plant utilizing a combination of solar air collector and central updraft tube to generate a solar induced convective flow which drives pressure staged turbines to generate electricity. The paper presents theory, practical experience, and economy of solar updraft towers: First a simplified theory of the solar tower is described. Then results from designing, building and operating a small scale prototype in Spain are presented. Eventually technical issues and basic economic data for future commercial solar tower systems like the one being planned for Australia are discussed.
