Abstract:The reaction of 10-bromo-9-oxa-10-boraanthracene with the tetrakis(tetrahydrofuran) lithium salt of dimesityl-1,8-naphthalenediylborate in diethyl ether affords 1-(dimesitylboryl)-8-(10'-bora-9'-oxaanthryl) naphthalene (2). This diborane reacts with [Me3SiF2][S(NMe2)(3))] to afford the anionic complex [2-mu(2)-F](-), which has been isolated as a [S(NMe2)(3)](+) salt. The cyclic voltammograms of diborane 2 as well as 1-(dimesitylboryl)-8-(10'-bora-9'-thiaanthryl) naphthalene (1) exhibit two reversible reductions at E-1/2 = -2.200 and -2.566 V (vs FcH/FcH(+)) for 1 and E-1/2 = -2.248 and -2.620 V (vs FcH/FcH(+)) for 2 corresponding to the sequential reduction of the two boron centers. These two waves simultaneously disappear upon fluoride addition, thus indicating the formation of fluoride chelate complexes [1-mu(2)-F]-and [2-mu(2)-F](-). To identify the origin of the high fluoride affinity displayed by these diboranes, the structures of 2 and [2-mu 2-F]-have been studied experimentally and computationally. The crystallographic studies show that the structure of 2 is distorted, thus indicating the presence of important steric repulsions between the neighboring boryl moieties. By contrast, the structure of the anionic complex [2-mu 2-F]-is much more sterically relaxed than that of 2, as indicated by a reduction of the B-B distance from 3.279(4) angstrom in 2 to 2.922(7) angstrom in [2-mu(2)-F](-). The structural results suggest that the high fluoride affinity displayed by 2 results, at least in part, from the relief of steric repulsions induced by fluoride binding. Finally, the nature of the bonding as well as the strength of the interactions involved in the B-F-B bridge of [2-mu 2-F]-has been studied using density functional theory calculations and Atoms-In-Molecules analyses. These calculations indicate that the enthalpic gain associated with the formation of two B-F bonds in [2-mu 2-F]-only amounts to a fraction of the energy of a terminal B-F bond. These calculations also suggest that the relief of steric repulsions induced by fluoride binding in 2 may contribute to the high fluoride affinity of these types of molecules.

Abstract:Treatment of 1,8-bis(diphenylhydroxymethyl)naphthalene with a mixture of [HBF(4)](aq) and (CF(3)CO)(2)O affords the corresponding dication, 1,8-bis(diphenylmethylium)naphthalenediyl (1(2+)), which was isolated as the [BF4]- salt. This dication has been fully characterized, and its structure has been studied computationally. The (13)C NMR resonance of the methylium centers appears at 207.7 ppm. As indicated by an X-ray single-crystal analysis, the vicinal methylium centers are separated by 3.112(4) A. Dication (1(2+)) reacts with fluoride to afford [1-F]+ which has been isolated as the [BF4]- salt. The fluorine atom of [1-F](+) is connected to one of the former methylium centers through a typical C-F bond of 1.424(2) A and forms a long interaction of 2.444(2) A with the other methylium center. While the structure of [1-F]+ can be largely accounted for by considering a simple methylium formulation, density functional calculations followed by an Atom In Molecules analysis as well as a calculation of the Boys localized orbitals indicate that the long C-F interaction of 2.444(2) A corresponds to a dative bond. Hence, formulation of [1-F]+ as an unsymmetrical fluoronium must also be considered. As indicated by 1H NMR spectroscopy, the structure of this ion is fluxional; the fluorine atom oscillates between the former methylium centers with apparent activation parameters of DeltaH++ = 52(+/-3) kJ mol(-1) and DeltaS++ = -18(+/-9) J K(-1) mol(-1) as derived from line shape analysis. This dynamic process, which has also been studied theoretically by B3LYP density functional theory and Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory methods, involves symmetrical fluoronium ions as low-energy transition states.

Abstract:The title compound, [CoCl2(CH4N2S)2].2C11H6N2O, consists of the tetrahedral cobalt(II) complex and free 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one (dafone). Dafone links to the complex through hydrogen bonding between N atoms. The carbonyl bridge in dafone distorts the bipyridine moiety. The longer N⋯N separations of 3.068 (3) and 3.064 (3) Å in dafone are considered to be the reason for the weaker chelating ability of dafone.

Abstract:The major source of fluoride, namely calcium difluoride (CaF2), is derived from the mineral fluorspar. Recent advances in the activation of CaF2 via mechanochemical methods have inspired investigation of the fundamental properties of Ca–F bonds in molecular complexes. However, the paucity of well-defined molecular Ca–F-containing complexes undermines systematic understanding of the factors governing nucleophilic fluoride delivery. Here we report the use of a multidentate bis(phenoxide) ligand based on a 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (TACN) scaffold for the formation of well-defined Ca–F complexes, and demonstrate their capabilities in fluoride delivery. Key to this synthesis is an unprecedented desymmetrization step carried out on the TACN ligand within the Ca coordination sphere. A series of stable anionic dinuclear calcium fluoride complexes has then been accessed and characterized by NMR spectroscopy (critically by 19F NMR) and X-ray crystallography. Nucleophilic fluoride delivery can be used to generate C–F, Si–F and S–F bonds, with a notable advance over amide-derived ligand scaffolds being the reduced extent of side reactions derived from competing attack on the electrophile by the less nucleophilic O-donor anionic ligand set.

Abstract:B(C6F5)3 and the corresponding anion [B(C6F5)4]− are ubiquitous in main group and transition metal chemistry. Known derivatives are generally limited to the incorporation of electron donating substituents. Herein we describe electrophilic fluorination and dearomatization of such species using XeF2 in the presence of BF3 or Lewis acidic cations. In this fashion the anions [HB(C6F5)3]−, [B(C6F5)4]− and [(C6F5)3BC≡NB(C6F5)3]−, are converted to [HB(C6F7)3]−, [B(C6F7)4]−, and [(C6F7)3BC≡NB(C6F7)3]−, respectively. Similarly, the borane adducts (L)B(C6F7)3 (L = MeCN, OPEt3) are produced. These rare examples of electrophilic attack of electron deficient rings proceed as [XeF][BF4] acts as a frustrated Lewis pair effecting fluorination and dearomatization of C6F5 rings.

Abstract:Since the development of the chemistry and applications of boron dipyrromethene dyes (BODIPYs), numerous other platforms based on boron complexes of N‐donor ligands have emerged as molecular optoelectronic materials. By tailoring the structure of the ligand bound to boron, the optical and electronic properties of a compound can be precisely tuned for unique properties, such as aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) in the case of boron difluoride hydrazones (BODIHYs). We examine the impact of modifying the typical bidentate hydrazone ligand structure used to prepare BODIHYs to enable a tridentate coordination mode to produce boron complexes of tridentate acyl pyridylhydrazones. This change allows for the use of arylboronic acids as sources of boron and facilitates the inclusion of complex organic components at the boron centre, including the formation of dye‐dye conjugates. The synthesized compounds exhibit distinct optical and electronic properties when compared to BODIHYs, such as reversible electrochemical reduction and up to a >300 nm pseudo‐Stokes shift in the solid state, all of which were supported by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:[Reaction: see text] 1,8-Bis(bis(p-chlorophenyl)methylium)naphthalenediyl dication has been prepared by treatment of the corresponding diol with a mixture of [HBF4]aq and (CF3CO)2O. The proximity of the methylium centers leads to strong electrostatic repulsions that are exacerbated by the electron-withdrawing p-chloro substituents. As indicated by cyclic voltammetry, this dication is the strongest oxidant of the 1,8-bis(methylium)naphthalenediyl series. It undergoes a reductive chlorination with chloride and reacts with bromide or iodide to afford the corresponding acenaphthenes.

Abstract:Boron difluoride (BF2) complexes with asymmetrical N,N'‐bidentate ligands have received increasing attention due to their fascinating properties and broad applications. They are generally constructed in two steps: ligand formation, followed by boron complexation. This review focuses on categorizing these BF2 complexes based on the key synthetic strategies that have been applied in the ligand formation steps. The post‐functionalization, properties and applications of different types of BF2 complexes are presented. Their challenges and opportunities are also discussed. This should help the future rational design and synthesis of BF2 complexes with intriguing properties and practical applications.

Abstract:8-hydroxyquinoline and imidazole, two important N-heteroaromatic systems, have a strong affinity towards various anions via their acidic OH or NH protons. Three receptor ligands, 5-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)quinolin-8-ol (1), 5-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)quinolin-8-ol (2), and 4-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (3) were synthesized and their fluoride (F–) ion binding properties were investigated. These ligands can selectively attach F– ion, and their respective F– complexes 1-TBAF, 2-TBAF, and 3-TBAF (TBAF = tetrabutylammonium fluoride) were characterized using single crystal X-ray analysis, NMR, UV-Vis, Hirshfeld surface (HS) analysis and computational studies Their solid-state structural analysis revealed that in each case, the F− ion is strongly bound within the receptor molecule scaffold by NH, OH, and aryl-CH hydrogen bonding interactions, and in the case of 1-TBAF and 3-TBAF, the F− binding is further strengthened by inclusion of water molecules, forming fluoride-water cluster complexes. 1H NMR exhibited the disappearance of NH and OH proton signals, upon adding TBAF, indicating the NH and OH protons as the primary site for F– ion coordination. UV-vis absorbance spectra studied their deep sensing limits towards F– ion. 1 and 2 both showed good responsive behavior starting from 0.5 μM of F– ion, though obvious changes occurred from F– concentration of 180 and 12 μM, respectively. HS analysis quantified the non-covalent interatomic contacts between the atoms and Fluoride, and found that 1-TBAF contributed a maximum of 19.2 % of all atoms···F contacts to the HS. Density functional theory studies were done on 1-TBAF, 2-TBAF, and 3-TBAF crystal systems, and the band structure and total density of states were evaluated on 1-TBAF–3-TBAF. The optical response evaluation of 2-TBAF was also investigated.

Abstract:The Lewis acidity of tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane has been slightly increased by mimicking the structural evolution from triarylborane to 9-aryl-9-borafluorene. The o-carborane-based analogue (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11), obtained via salt elimination between LiC2B10H11 and (C2B10H10)2BBr, has been fully characterized. Gutmann−Beckett and computational fluoride/hydride ion affinity (FIA/HIA) studies have confirmed the increase in Lewis acidity, which is attributable to structural constraint imposed by the CC-coupling between two carboranyl groups. Selective complexation of (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11) with Bestmann ylides R3PCCO (R = Ph, Cy) has been achieved, enabling further conversion into the zwitterionic phospholium salt through NHC-catalyzed proton transfer.

Fluorinated boroxin-based anion receptors for lithium ion batteries: fluoride anion binding, ab initio calculations, and ionic conductivity studies

Abstract:Novel fluorinated boroxines, tris(2,6-difluorophenyl)boroxin (DF), tris(2,4,6-trifluorophenyl)boroxin (TF), and tris(pentafluorophenyl)boroxin (PF), have been investigated for potential applications in lithium ion batteries through fluoride anion binding, ab initio calculations, and ionic conductivity measurements. Structures of the fluorinated boroxines and boroxin-fluoride complexes have been confirmed by comparing their (19)F and (11)B NMR chemical shifts with those obtained by the DFT-GIAO method. The stoichiometry of the fluoride anion binding to these boroxines has been shown to be 1:1 using (19)F NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. UV-vis spectroscopic studies show the coexistence of more than one complex, in addition to the 1:1 complex, for perfluorinated boroxin, PF. DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-311G**) show that the fluoride ion complex of DF prefers unsymmetrical, covalently bound structure (7) over the symmetrically bridged species (10) by 12.5 kcal/mol. Rapid equilibration of the fluoride anion among the three borons in these boroxines results in a single (19)F NMR absorption for all of the aromatic ortho- or para-fluorines at ambient temperature. The effect of these anion receptors on lithium ion conductivities was also explored for potential applications in dual ion intercalating lithium batteries.

Abstract:The introduction of main group elements into conjugated scaffolds is emerging as a key route to novel optoelectronic materials. Herein, an efficient and versatile way to synthesize polymerizable 9,10-azaboraphenanthrene (BNP)-containing monomers by aromaticity-driven ring expansion reactions between highly antiaromatic borafluorene and azides is reported, and the corresponding conjugated small molecules and polymers are developed as well. The BNP-containing small molecules and conjugated polymers showed good air/ moisture stability and notable fluorescence properties. Addition of fluoride ions to the BNP-based small molecules and polymers induced a rapid change in the emission color from blue to green/ yellow, respectively, accompanied by strong intensity changes. The conjugated polymers showed better ratiometric sensing performance than small molecules due to the exciton migration along the conjugated chains. Further experiments showed that the sensing process is fully reversible. The films prepared by solution-deposition of BNP-based compounds in the presence of polycaprolactone also showed good ratiometric sensing for fluoride ions.

Abstract:Very recently, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been extremely extended by replacing CQC units with isoelectronic B-N ones, however, BN-containing pi-conjugated oligomers or polymers are still very less explored due to the lack of appropriate building blocks. Herein, on the basis of the successful synthesis of a new BN-embedded heteroacene and its brominated derivatives, a series of BN-containing oligomers have been achieved via Suzuki cross-coupling with aryl boronic esters. Their rich photophysical properties and electrochemical behaviors are essentially dependent on the main chain lengths, indicative of the fully-pi-conjugated effect of such kinds of luminogens. Furthermore, these BN-containing luminogens enable colorimetric and fluorometric dual channel detection of fluoride ions through binding to the Lewis acid boron atom of the BN moiety in high selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract:As a monoatomic bridge, fluoride ion can transmit efficient magnetic interaction between lanthanide ions but its effect on tuning the magnetization dynamics has not been well understood. Herein, two monofluoride-bridged dinuclear dysprosium complexes [Dy 2 F(bbpen) 2 (EtOH) 2 ]Br·EtOH ( 1 ) and [Dy 2 F(bbppy) 2 ]Br·2EtOH ( 2 ) with Dy-F-Dy angles of ∼178° and their diamagnetic-ion diluted analogues 1 ́ and 2 ́ were synthesized. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 and 1 ́ barely show any magnetization dynamics, but 2 and 2 ́ exhibit strong magnetization dynamics. Systematical experimental analysis combined with ab initio calculations reveals that the different magnetization dynamics between 1 and 2 mainly originate from the effect of magnetic anisotropy by terminal ligand and bridging group of the chelating ligand, and the fluoride bridge can effectively suppress the quantum tunneling of the magnetization and turn on Orbach process in 2 .

Abstract:Neutral cyclic dimers of bile acid incorporating triazole and nonaromatic CH binding segments exhibit unique fluoride coordination properties and the formation of a 1:2 complex is confirmed.
