Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for advanced water purification membranes. A new kind of lamellar membrane is based on a stack of 2D MXene nanosheets. Starting from compact Ti3AlC2, delaminated nanosheets of the composition Ti3C2Tx with the functional groups T (O, OH, and/or F) can be produced by etching and ultrasonication and stapled on a porous support by vacuum filtration. The MXene membrane supported on anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate shows excellent water permeance (more than 1000Lm(-2)h(-1)bar(-1)) and favorable rejection rate (over 90%) for molecules with sizes larger than 2.5nm. The water permeance through the MXene membrane is much higher than that of the most membranes with similar rejections. Long-time operation also reveals the outstanding stability of the MXene membrane for water purification.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) separation membranes have proved their superiorities in addressing global water scarcity and recycling resources. However, current 2D membranes usually suffer from swelling and irregular stacking issues, which result in poor separation performance. Herein, we developed novel mix-dimensional assembled MXene composite membranes with high permeability and selectivity by intercalating 1D carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) into 2D lamellar MXene nanosheets. The effects of chain length of CNFs and MXene/CNFs mass ratios on the morphologies, physicochemical properties, and separation performances of composite membranes were systematically investigated. The optimized MXC-3-L membrane exhibited superior rejection to Congo red (CR, >99%) and remarkable separation efficiency of dye/salt. The separation factors for the CR/NaCl and CR/Na 2 SO 4 mixtures were 512.0 and 517.2, respectively. Moreover, the MXC-3-L membrane showed distinct rejections to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) (>95%) with a nearly 8-fold increase of permeance in comparison with the commercial polyamide membrane. The 2D X-ray diffraction analysis verified that the intercalation of 1D CNFs into 2D MXene nanosheets via strong hydrogen bonding can regulate the nanochannel into more stable and regularly stacking lamellar structures, which plays a key role in high permeance and excellent molecular separation efficiency. In addition, 1D CNFs play an essential role as "threading" and "stitching", shielding the defects between adjacent MXene nanosheets and improving the separation efficiencies. Our work provides new insights into design of defect-free and highly selective 2D materials-based membranes for enhanced wastewater treatment and molecular sieving.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are candidates for use in advanced molecular separation and water treatment. Among them, MXenes are cutting-edge two-dimensional (2D) materials with favorable properties such as high hydrophilicity, adjustable interlayer spacing, high mechanical strength, and structural stability. Therefore, they can be used to construct advanced lamellar membranes to ensure enhanced separation performance of modified membranes. Here, we prepared novel stable lamellar membranes through electrostatic attraction between polycation polyethyleneimine (PEI) and a negatively charged MXene, with hydrogen bond formation between their functional groups. By changing the pH of the suspension, the interlayer d-spacing of the prepared membrane could be altered to achieve precise molecular separation and ultrahigh organic solvent penetration. Furthermore, inserting PEI into the interlayer d-spacing of the membrane did not hinder the passage of water molecules. The prepared pH = 2-MXene-PEI membrane for dyes larger than 1.5 nm exhibited a rejection rate of greater than 96%, and the pH = 10-MXene-PEI membrane had a rejection rate of greater than 96% for dyes larger than 1.6 nm. In addition, the optimized MXene-PEI membranes showed channel stability. In this work, high-performance, stable, 2D MXene-PEI membranes with tunable nanochannels were developed. These membranes have great potential for use in precise molecular separation applications.

Abstract:Nanometer-thin sheets of 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene) have been assembled into freestanding or supported membranes for the charge- and size-selective rejection of ions and molecules. MXene membranes with controllable thicknesses ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers exhibited flexibility, high mechanical strength, hydrophilic surfaces, and electrical conductivity that render them promising for separation applications. Micrometer-thick MXene membranes demonstrated ultrafast water flux of 37.4 L/(Bar·h·m(2)) and differential sieving of salts depending on both the hydration radius and charge of the ions. Cations with a larger charge and hydration radii smaller than the interlayer spacing of MXene (∼6 Å) demonstrate an order of magnitude slower permeation compared to single-charged cations. Our findings may open a door for developing efficient and highly selective separation membranes from 2D carbides.

Abstract:Molecular sieving membranes with sufficient and uniform nanochannels that break the permeability-selectivity trade-off are desirable for energy-efficient gas separation, and the arising two-dimensional (2D) materials provide new routes for membrane development. However, for 2D lamellar membranes, disordered interlayer nanochannels for mass transport are usually formed between randomly stacked neighboring nanosheets, which is obstructive for highly efficient separation. Therefore, manufacturing lamellar membranes with highly ordered nanochannel structures for fast and precise molecular sieving is still challenging. Here, we report on lamellar stacked MXene membranes with aligned and regular subnanometer channels, taking advantage of the abundant surface-terminating groups on the MXene nanosheets, which exhibit excellent gas separation performance with H2 permeability >2200 Barrer and H2/CO2 selectivity >160, superior to the state-of-the-art membranes. The results of molecular dynamics simulations quantitatively support the experiments, confirming the subnanometer interlayer spacing between the neighboring MXene nanosheets as molecular sieving channels for gas separation.
Self-assembly enabled nano-intercalation for stable high-performance MXene membranes

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) lamellar membranes, such as graphene and MXene based surfaces have attracted growing interest for water purification. However, 2D membranes still face critical challenges, such as low stability, high internal resistance, and the tradeoff between permeability and selectivity, leading to unsatisfactory separation performance. Herein, high-performance MXene membranes with stable and tunable lamellar nanochannels are fabricated by facile self-assembly of negatively charged 2D MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets and positively charged 0D alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles. The internal nanochannels (e.g., d-spacing) and surface properties (e.g., hydrophilicity and roughness) of the prepared MXene membranes can be precisely tailored by self-assembly of MXene/Al2O3 with different mass ratios. The optimized membrane with an MXene/Al2O3 mass ratio of 1:1 exhibits an outstanding water permeability of 88.8 LMH/bar (four times higher than that of the unmodified MXene membrane) and high molecule separation performance (>99.5% rejections to Rhodamine B and Methyl Blue). Such high separation performance outperforms many 2D membranes reported in literature, mainly because of the tunable interlayer spacing and favorable surface properties. The optimized MXene membrane also shows significantly enhanced channel stability after nano-Al2O3 intercalation during self-assembly. The self-assembly enabled nano-intercalation demonstrated in this work provides a facile method for engineering high-performance 2D membranes with stable and tunable nanochannels for precise molecular separation.

Advanced Membranes Functionalized with Non-carbon-based 2D Nanomaterials for Liquid Separation

Abstract:An efficient molecular-level separation membrane with high permeability and superior selectivity is of pivotal significance for precise molecular/ion separation. However, there still exists a technical challenge to accurately control the membrane pore apertures at nanoscale dimensions for molecular separations. The use of two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring single-layered/few-layered thickness is favored for shortening the transport pathway for solvent molecules. Owing to their facile fabrication process, tunable pore size, and versatile functions, 2D material-based membranes show great potential to overcome this challenge for rapid and efficient separations via the combined effect of pore aperture and pore surface functionalization. Recently, 2D non-carbon-based nanomaterials have been extensively explored as effective building blocks to construct high-performance membranes. This chapter outlines the characteristics and synthesis methods of several non-carbon-based 2D materials like MOFs, COFs, and MXene. The use of these 2D materials for membrane design and their applications for liquid separation is summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the challenges of non-carbon-based 2D materials used in liquid separation and the future development direction are highlighted.

Abstract:Membrane technology has attracted great attentions in the field such as separation and purification due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. To break the "trade-off" limitation between high permeability and selectivity, tremendous efforts have been oriented towards how to design and exploit ultrathin membranes. Graphene and MXene, which own single-atom layer thickness, large specific surface area, ease of fabrication, and controllable layer-by-layer assembly, have emerged as ideal candidates for ultrathin membranes. Compared to conventional polymeric membrane materials, 2D separation membranes assembled by graphene and MXene nanosheets, leveraging their unique laminar structure and ultrathin thickness, significantly shorten the transport path of guest molecules, minimizing mass transfer resistance while maintaining or even enhancing separation selectivity. Furthermore, precise sieving of guest molecules can be achieved through tuning the interlayer spacing or pore sizes of 2D nanosheets. This review comprehensively summarizes the state-of-the-art advancements on ultrathin 2D membranes assembled by graphene and MXene nanosheets, including the synthesis of nanosheets, the fabrication principles, structure design, and mass transfer mechanism of ultrathin 2D membranes, and related precise separation applications. We focus on advanced ultrathin 2D membranes which simultaneously exhibit high permeability and selectivity, and discuss the strategies and mechanisms that suitable to develop ultrathin 2D membrane can overcome the "trade-off" effect that inherent in traditional separation membranes. Finally, critical consideration on the opportunities and challenges of ultrathin 2D membrane assembled by graphene and MXene nanosheets towards high-performance precise separation are also presented.

Abstract:Pervaporation dehydration is an energy efficient process for purifying organic solvents, whose application depends on the development of highly permeable and selective membranes. In this work, synthesized two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets were incorporated into chitosan (CS) to fabricate a new MXene/CS mixed-matrix membrane used for solvent dehydration via pervaporation process. The morphology, chemical structure and surface hydrophilicity of the membranes were studied by SEM, AFM, IR, XPS and water contact angle measurement. Three kinds of organic solvents, ethanol, ethyl acetate and dimethyl carbonate were used for evaluating the membrane dehydration performance. The results indicated that incorporation of MXene nanosheets did not increase the surface sorption, whereas the assembled MXene laminates with interlayer channels greatly enhanced the permeation of water molecular through the membrane. Thus, flux and separation factor of CS membrane were simultaneously improved by introducing the MXene nanosheets. Specifically, the optimized 3 wt% MXene/CS MMM exhibited total flux of similar to 1.4-1.5 kg/(m(2) h) and separation factor of 1421, 4898 and 906 for dehydration of ethanol, ethyl acetate and dimethyl carbonate at 50 degrees C, respectively.
A Two-Dimensional Lamellar Vermiculite Membrane for Precise Molecular Separation and Ion Sieving

Abstract:Lamellar membranes constructed from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have exhibited exceptional permselective characteristics. However, their complex and contaminative nanosheet synthesis, low structural stability, and low chemical resistance severely limit industrial-scale production and practical applications. Herein, the stability, molecular separation, ion-sieving properties, and broad applicability were evaluated to demonstrate the application potential of 2D vermiculite (VMT) nanomaterials in high-performance membrane development. First, the large-scale 2D VMT nanosheets with average lateral sizes of ∼12 μm were prepared from the widely occurring natural clay via a facile procedure, and the 2D lamellar VMT membrane showed excellent long-term stability in harsh environments, even in an ultrasonic bath. Furthermore, the VMT membrane showed fast solvent permeance with a favorable retention rate of dye molecules and a surface charge-governed ionic transport behavior because of the negatively charged nanochannel, indicating the potential in both molecule separation and ion sieving. Moreover, the broad applicability of the VMT membrane was also confirmed using a simple intercalation optimizing strategy developed for other 2D membranes. Building on these findings, our work shows a possible route to the development of advanced membranes for energy and environmental applications.

Assembly of 2D MXene Nanosheets and TiO2 Nanoparticles for Fabricating Mesoporous TiO2-MXene Membranes

Abstract:A simple and scalable method was proposed for the preparation of mesoporous membranes by assembling two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on a macroporous support. MXene nanosheets were introduced into TiO2 hydrosol, and then the sol was transformed into gel for fabrication of mesoporous TiO2-MXene membranes. Characterization results confirmed that an assembled structure of TiO2-MXene nanosheets was formed, benefiting from the nanosheets as 'floor tiles', thereby successfully inhibited the sol infiltration to the porous support. As a result, the hydrosols could be directly coated on macroporous substrates (with only one single cycle of aging and calcination) such as a disc support with an average pore size of similar to 100 nm and a four-channel hollow fiber with an average pore size of similar to 00 nm. Filtration experiments revealed the resulted membranes, in particular of the hollow fiber TiO2-MXene membranes, had a narrow pore size distribution, desirable rejection characteristics of dextran and high water permeate flux. The 2D nanosheet assisted TiO2 NPs assembly proposed in this work promises a simple, feasible and scalable approach for fabricating high-performance mesoporous TiO2 membranes.
Tubular MXene/SS Membranes for Highly Efficient H2/CO2 Separation

Abstract:Accurately constructing membranes based on two-dimensional (2D) materials on commercial porous substrates remains a significant challenge for H2 purification. In this work, a series of tubular 2D MXene membranes are prepared on commercial porous stainless steel substrates via fast electrophoretic deposition. Compared with other methods, such as filtration or drop coating, etc. such preparation route shows the advantages of simple operation, high efficiency for membrane assembly (within 5 min) with attractive reproducibility, and ease for scale-up. The tubular MXene membranes present excellent gas separation performance with hydrogen permeance of 1290 GPU and H2/CO2 selectivity of 55. Furthermore, the membrane displays extremely stable performance during the long-term test for more than 1250 h, and about 93% of the membranes from one batch have exceeded the DOE target for CO2 capture. Most importantly, this work provides a valuable referential significance for other types of 2D materials-based membranes for future application development.
Recent Progress in Two-dimensional-material Membranes for Gas Separation

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, led by graphene, have emerged as nano-building blocks to develop high-performance membranes. The atom-level thickness of nanosheets makes a membrane as thin as possible, thereby minimizing the transport resistance and maximizing the permeation flux. Meanwhile, the sieving channels can be precisely manipulated within sub-nanometer size for molecular separation, such as gas separation. For instance, graphene oxide (GO) channels with an interlayer height of about 0.4 nm assembled by external forces exhibited excellent H2/CO2 sieving performance compared to commercial membranes. Cross-linking was also employed to fabricate ultrathin (<20 nm) GO-facilitated transport membranes for efficient CO2 capture. A boratecrosslinked membrane exhibited a high CO2 permeance of 650 GPU (gas permeation unit), and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 75, which is currently the best performance reported for GO-based composite membranes. The CO2-facilitated transport membrane with piperazine as the carrier also exhibited excellent separation performance under simulated flue gas conditions with CO2 permeance of 1020 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity as high as 680. In addition, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with layered structures, if successfully exfoliated, can serve as diverse sources for MOF nanosheets that can be fabricated into high-performance membranes. It is challenging to maintain the structural and morphological integrity of nanosheets. Poly[Zn2(benzimidazole)4] (Zn2(bim)4) was firstly exfoliated into 1-nm-thick nanosheets and assembled into ultrathin membranes possessing both high permeance and excellent molecular sieving properties for H2/CO2 separation. Interestingly, reversed thermo-switchable molecular sieving was also demonstrated in membranes composed of 2D MOF nanosheets. Besides, researchers employed layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to prepare molecular-sieving membranes via in situ growth, and the as-prepared membranes showed a remarkable selectivity of ~80 for H2-CH4 mixture. They concluded that the amount of CO2 in the precursor solution contributed to LDH membranes with various preferred orientations and thicknesses. Apart from these 2D materials, MXenes also show great potential in selective gas permeation. Lamellar stacked MXene membranes with aligned and regular sub-nanometer channels exhibited excellent gas separation performance. Moreover, our ultrathin (20 nm) MXene nanofilms showed outstanding molecular sieving property for the preferential transport of H2, with H2 permeance as high as 1584 GPU and H2/CO2 selectivity of 27. The originally H2selective MXene membranes could be transformed into membranes selectively permeating CO2 by chemical tuning of the MXene nanochannels. This paper briefly reviews the latest groundbreaking studies in 2D-material membranes for gas separation, with a focus on sub-nanometer 2D channels, exfoliation of 2D nanosheets with structural integrity, and tunable gas transport property. Challenges, in terms of the mass production of 2D nanosheets, scale-up of lab-level membranes and a thorough understanding of the transport mechanism, and the potential of 2D-material membranes for wide implementation are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional membranes have attracted significant attention due to their superior characteristics, and their ability to boost both flux and selectivity have led to their reputation as potential next-generation separation membranes. Among them, emerging MXene-based membranes play significant roles in the competitive membrane-separation field. In this mini-review, we systematically discuss the assembly and separation mechanisms of these membranes. Moreover, we highlight strategies based on the crosslinking of MXene nanosheets and the construction of additional nanochannels that further enhance the permeabilities and anti-swelling properties of MXene-based membranes and meet the requirements of practical applications, such as gas-molecule sieving, ion sieving, and other small-molecule sieving. MXene nanosheets can also be used as additives that introduce specific functionalities into hybrid membranes. In addition, extended applications that use MXenes as scaffolds are also discussed.
Self-crosslinked MXene Hollow Fiber Membranes for H2/CO2 Separation

Abstract:Inorganic hollow fibers are promising substrates for the scaled-up fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) material membranes because of their high packing density and durability under harsh application conditions. However, the inefficient stacking of 2D materials (e.g., MXene nanosheets) on hollow fibers usually leads to oversized interlayer spaces, resulting in low molecular sieving performance. In this study, self-crosslinked MXene hollow fiber membranes were fabricated using a facile thermal treatment process. The self-crosslinking process was documented in detail. An in-situ thermogravimetric analyzer-Fourier transform infrared spectra measurement revealed that the early thermal treatment stage dominated the self-crosslinking process and controlled the regulation of MXene interlayer spacing. The self-crosslinked MXene hollow fiber membranes prepared in this manner exhibited a H-2 permeance of 70.6 GPU and H-2/CO2 selectivity of 30.3, with good operation stability for more than 120 h. This work demonstrates that the self-crosslinking strategy is an efficient approach for improving the size-sieving properties of 2D MXene membranes.
Ultrathin Two‐Dimensional Porous Fullerene Membranes for Ultimate Organic Solvent Separation

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with high chemical stability have attracted intensive interest in membrane design for the separation of organic solvents. As a novel 2D material, polymeric fullerenes (C60)∞ with distinctive properties are very promising for the development of innovative membranes. In this work, we report the construction of a 2D (C60)∞ nanosheet membrane for organic solvent separation. The pathways of the (C60)∞ nanosheet membrane are constructed by sub-1-nm lateral channels and nanoscale in-plane pores created by the depolymerization of the (C60)∞ nanosheets. Attributing to ordered and shortened transport pathways, the ultrathin porous (C60)∞ membrane is superior in organic solvent separation. The hexane, acetone, and methanol fluxes are up to 1146.3±53, 900.4±41, and 879.5±42 kg·m-2·h-1, respectively, which are up to 130 times higher than those of the state-of-the-art membranes with similar dye rejection. Charge- and Size-Selective Ion Sieving Through Ti3C2Tx MXene Membranes

Abstract:Nanometer-thin sheets of 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene) have been assembled into freestanding or supported membranes for the charge- and size-selective rejection of ions and molecules. MXene membranes with controllable thicknesses ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers exhibited flexibility, high mechanical strength, hydrophilic surfaces, and electrical conductivity that render them promising for separation applications. Micrometer-thick MXene membranes demonstrated ultrafast water flux of 37.4 L/(Bar·h·m2) and differential sieving of salts depending on both the hydration radius and charge of the ions. Cations with a larger charge and hydration radii smaller than the interlayer spacing of MXene (∼6 Å) demonstrate an order of magnitude slower permeation compared to single-charged cations. Abstract:Transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides, commonly referred to as MXenes, have gained widespread attention since their discovery in 2011 as a promising family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Their impressive chemical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and biological properties have fueled a surge in research focused on the synthesis and application of MXenes in various fields, including membrane-based separation. By engineering the materials and membrane structures, MXene-based membranes have demonstrated remarkable separation performance and added functionalities, such as antifouling and photocatalytic properties. In this review, we aim to have a timely and critical review of research on their fabrication strategy and performance in advanced molecular separation and ion exchange, beginning with a brief introduction of the preparation and physicochemical properties of MXenes. Finally, outlooks and future works are outlined with the aims to provide valuable insights and guidance for advancing membranes’ applications in different separation domains.
