Abstract:Inspired by the water-collecting strategies of desert beetles and spider silk, a novel kind of surface with star-shaped wettablity patterns has been developed. By combining both wettability and shape gradients, the as-prepared surface has gained higher efficiency in water collection compared to circle-shaped wettability patterns and uniformly superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Various life forms in nature display a high level of adaptability to their environments through the use of sophisticated material interfaces. This is exemplified by numerous biological systems, such as the self-cleaning of lotus leaves, the water-walking abilities of water striders and spiders, the ultra-slipperiness of pitcher plants, the directional liquid adhesion of butterfly wings, and the water collection capabilities of beetles, spider webs, and cacti. The versatile interactions of these natural surfaces with fluids, or special wettability, are enabled by their unique micro/nanoscale surface structures and intrinsic material properties. Many of these biological designs and principles have inspired new classes of functional interfacial materials, which have remarkable potential to solve some of the engineering challenges for industrial and biomedical applications. In this article, we provide a snapshot of the state of the art of biologically inspired materials with special wettability, and discuss some promising future directions for the field.

Abstract:Benefiting from the remarkable wettability heterogeneity, bio-inspired wettability patterns present a progressive and versatile platform for manipulating and patterning liquids, which provides an emerging strategy for operating liquid samples with crucial values in biomedical applications. In this review, we present a general summary of bio-inspired wettability patterns. After a compendious introduction of natural wettability phenomena and their underlying mechanisms, we summarize the general design principles and fabrication methods for preparing artificial wettability materials. Next, we shift to patterned surface wettability with an emphasis on the fabrication approaches. Then, we discuss in detail the various practical applications of wettability patterns in the biomedical field, including cell culture, drug screening and biosensors. Critical thinking about the current challenges and future outlook is also provided. We believe that this review would propel the prosperous development of bio-inspired wettability patterns to flourish in the field of biomedical engineering.

Abstract:Fast and easy construction of biomimetic surfaces with controlled wettability was accomplished through electrospinning. The topography and wetting properties of biosurfaces including lotus leaves, bamboo leaves, goose feathers and water strider's legs were mimicked with different patterns of electrospun polymer nanofibers. Surfaces with anisotropic wetting in two or three directions, as well as artificial water strider's legs with maximal supporting force of more than 200 dynes cm(-1) were facilely fabricated based on an electrospinning technique combined with specially designed nanofiber collectors. We believe these polymer nanofiber patterns will help the design of smart, fluid-controllable interfaces that may be applied in novel microfluidic devices and directional, easy-cleaning coatings.

Abstract:Superwettability is a special case of the wetting phenomenon among liquids, gases, and solids. The superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic effect discovered initially has undergone a century of development based on materials science and biomimetics. With the rapid development of research on anti-wetting materials, superoleophobic/superoleophilic surfaces have been fabricated to repel organic liquids besides water. Further studies of underwater superoleophobic/superoleophilic/superaerophobic/superaerophilic materials provide an alternative way to fabricate anti-wetting surfaces rather than lowering the surface energy. Owing to a series of efforts on the studying of extreme wettabilities, a mature superwettability system gradually evolved and has since become a vibrant area of active research, covering topics of superhydrophobicity/superhydrophilicity, superoleophobicity/superoleophilicity in gas or under liquid, superaerophobicity/superaerophilicity under liquid, and combinations of these states. The kinetic study of the superwettability system includes statics and dynamics, while the studied material structures range from traditional two-dimensional materials to three-dimensional, one-dimensional, and zero-dimensional materials. Furthermore, the wetting liquids range from water to oil, aqueous solutions, and ionic liquids, as well as liquid crystals and other types of liquids. The wetting conditions extend over a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and other external fields. With the development of this series of research, many new theories and functional interfacial materials have been fabricated, including self-cleaning textiles, oil/water separation systems, and water collection systems, and some of these have already been applied in industry. Moreover, the study of superwettability has also introduced many new phenomena and principles to the field of interfacial chemistry that display its vast potential in both materials and chemistry. The present Perspective aims to summarize the most recent research on these materials and their interfacial chemistry. An overview of novel materials in superwettability systems and interfacial materials is presented. Specifically, the evolution of superwettable materials will be introduced, and the fundamental rules for building these superwetting materials will be discussed, followed by a summary of recent progress in the application of superwettable materials to alter the behaviors of chemical reactants and products. Specific emphasis is placed on recent strategies that exploit superwettable materials to influence the performance of traditional chemical reactions and their unique contributions to chemistry, including the effective collection of reaction products, unique growth models of precipitates, and a simple strategy for the alignment/assembly of nanoscale building blocks. Finally, a short perspective is provided on the potential for future developments in the field.

Abstract:Bioinspired special wettibilities including superhydrophobicity and tunable adhesive force have drawn considerable attention because of their significant potential for fundamental research and practical applications. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of bioinspired wetting surfaces via laser microfabrication, with a focus on controllable, biomimetic, and switchable wetting surfaces, as well as their applications in biology, microfluidic, and paper-based devices, all of which demonstrate the ability of laser microfabrication in producing various multiscale structures and its adaptation in a great variety of materials. In particular, compared to other techniques, laser microfabrication can realize special modulation ranging from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic without the assistance of fluorination, allowing much more freedom to achieve complex multiple-wettability integration. The current challenges and future research prospects of this rapidly developing field are also being discussed. These approaches open the intriguing possibility of the development of advanced interfaces equipped with the integration of more functionalities.

Abstract:Inspired by the Stenocora beetle, selective wettability surfaces incorporate alternating wettable and nonwettable surface features that have received substantial attention over the past two decades. These surfaces are sought after for their very promising potential to drive progress in numerous application fields, including ecological protection, biomedical sciences, and industrial technologies. However, despite ongoing efforts to produce such surfaces in commercial quantities, understanding their basic fabrication concepts for practical applications can be challenging, especially for novices, given the vast technical literature in this area. This review, therefore, aims to elucidate the principles of wettability, along with the evolution of selective wettability surfaces and their uses. Beginning with a summary of the essential history and theory of wetting, we explore naturally occurring surfaces that have influenced wetting studies. We then detail state-of-the-art methods for fabricating these unique biwetting surfaces and show how contemporary science employs such designs in solving real-world problems. Finally, we offer an outlook for future research prospects on scalable, printing-based fabrication methods.

Abstract:Slippery surfaces, which originate in nature with special wettability, have drawn a great deal of attention for both fundamental research and practical applications in a variety of fields due to their unique characteristics of super‐low liquid friction and adhesion. Although the research of bioinspired slippery surfaces is in its infancy, it is a rapidly growing and enormously promising field. Herein, we present a systematic review of recent progress in bioinspired slippery surfaces, beginning with a brief introduction of several typical creatures with slippery property in nature. Subsequently, a detailed discussion the basic concepts of the wetting, friction and drag from micro and macro aspects and focus on the underlying slippery mechanism. We next summarize state‐of‐the‐art developments of the three categories of slippery surfaces of air‐trapped, liquid‐infused and liquid‐like slippery surfaces, including materials, design principles and preparation methods of slippery surfaces and highlight the emerging applications. Abstract:After two hundred years development, surface and interface science becomes an active discipline with flourishing development tendency. As one of the most important phenomenon of surface science, superlyophobic/superlyophilic has attracted widespread attentions of scientists and engineers. Inspired by the natural organism, scientists have designed various biomimetic materials with special wettability, such as asymmetric spider silk surface with dynamic wetting behavior, continuous directional water transport Nepenthes alata surface et al. These superlyophobic/superlyophilic materials are widely used in self-cleaning, water collection, liquid transportation and separation and many engineering domains. Among them, the liquid transportation and separation, including separation of oil-water mixture, immiscible organic liquids mixture and oil-water emulsion, are lucubrated by more and more scientists. Many one-dimensional and two-dimensional liquid transportation and separation materials with superlyophobicity/superlyophilicity have been successfully designed and used in scientific researches and technology applications. With the principle of sustainable development, we expect that these bioinspired liquid transportation and separation materials can be applied into the actual production and living in the near future.

3D-Printed Bioinspired Cassie-Baxter Wettability for Controllable Microdroplet Manipulation

Abstract:It is a great challenge to fabricate a surface with Cassie-Baxter wettability that can be continuously adjusted from hydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity by changing of geometric parameters. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a bioinspired surface fabricated by using a projection micro-stereolithography (PμSL) based 3D printing technique to address the challenge. Independent of materials, the bioinspired textured surface has a maximum contact angle (CA) of 171°, which is even higher than that of the omniphobic springtail skin we try to imitate. Most significantly, we are able to control the CA of the bioinspired surface in the range of 55-171° and the adhesion force from 71 to 99 μN continuously by only changing the geometric parameters of the bioinspired microstructures. The underlying mechanisms of the CA control of our bioinspired surface are also revealed by using a multi-phase lattice Boltzmann model. Furthermore, we demonstrate potential applications in droplet-based microreactors, nonloss water transportation, and coalescence of water droplets by employing our 3D-printed bioinspired structures with their remarkable precise Cassie-Baxter wettability control and petal effects. The present results potentially pave a new way for designing next generation functional surfaces for microdroplet manipulation, droplet-based biodetection, antifouling surfaces, and cell culture.

Abstract:Antifogging (AF) structure materials found in nature have great potential for enabling novel and emerging products and technologies to facilitate the daily life of human societies, attracting enormous research interests owing to their potential applications in display devices, traffics, agricultural greenhouse, food packaging, solar products, and other fields. The outstanding performance of biological AF surfaces encourages the rapid development and wide application of new AF materials. In fact, AF properties are inextricably associated with their surface superwettability. Generally, the superwettability of AF materials depends on a combination of their surface geometrical structures and surface chemical compositions. To explore their general design principles, recent progresses in the investigation of bioinspired AF materials are summarized herein. Recent developments of the mechanism, fabrication, and applications of bioinspired AF materials with superwettability are also a focus. This includes information on constructing superwetting AF materials based on designing the topographical structure and regulating the surface chemical composition. Finally, the remaining challenges and promising breakthroughs in this field are also briefly discussed.

Anisotropic Wettability of Bioinspired Surface Characterized by Friction Force

Abstract:Bioinspired surfaces with special wettabilities attract increasing attention due to their extensive applications in many fields. However, the characterizations of surface wettability by contact angle (CA) and sliding angle (SA) have clear drawbacks. Here, by using an array of triangular micropillars (ATM) prepared by soft lithography, the merits of measuring the friction force of a water droplet on ATM over measurements of CA and SA in characterizing the surface wettability are demonstrated. The CA and SA measurements show ignorable differences in the wettabilities of ATM in opposite directions (1.13%) and that with different periodic parameters under the elongation ranging from 0 to 70%. In contrast, the friction measurement reveals a difference of > 10% in opposite directions. Moreover, the friction force shows a strong dependence on the periodic parameters which is regulated by mechanical stretching. Increasing the elongation from 0 to 50% increases the static and kinetic friction force up to 23.0% and 22.9%, respectively. Moreover, the stick-slip pattern during kinetic friction can reveal the periodic features of the measured surface. The friction force measurement is a sensitive technique that could find applications in the characterization of surface wettabilities.

Abstract:Recent achievements in the construction of surfaces with special wettabilities, such as superhydrophobicity, superhydrophilicity, superoleophobicity, superoleophilicity, superamphiphilicity, superamphiphobicity, superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity, and reversible switching between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity, are presented. Particular attention is paid to superhydrophobic surfaces created via various methods and surfaces with reversible superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity that are driven by various kinds of external stimuli. The control of the surface micro‐/nanostructure and the chemical composition is critical for these special properties. These surfaces with controllable wettability are of great importance for both fundamental research and practical applications. Learning from Nature gives us inspiration for constructing functional surfaces with special wettability through the control of surface micro‐/nanostructure and chemical composition. In this Review, recent achievements in the construction of surfaces with superhydrophobicity, superhydrophilicity, superoleophobicity, and superoleophilicity, and their combinations, as well as switching properties between these states, are presented (see figure).

Abstract:In nature, many organisms are able to accommodate a complex living environment by developing biological wet adhesive surfaces with unique functions such as fixation and predation. Significantly, most of these outstanding functions originate from the specialized micro/nanostructures and/or chemical components of these natural organisms. To design artificial surfaces with remarkable wet adhesive properties, the underlying mechanisms of the fascinating adhesion phenomena are further explored and summarized to provide continuous inspiration. Herein, a systematic overview of biological wet adhesive surfaces and the corresponding artificial counterparts from the perspective of surface micro/nanostructures is provided. First, the research progress of the typical biological wet adhesive surfaces such as the octopus, tree frogs, and mayfly larvae is introduced. Then, the fundamental models of surface adhesion in natural organisms and the commonly used instruments for measuring adhesion force are discussed. Later, the corresponding artificial wet adhesive surfaces inspired by these representative organisms are highlighted. After that, the typical methods for fabricating these surfaces are briefly introduced. Finally, future challenges and opportunities to develop bioinspired multiscaled wet adhesive surfaces with controlled adhesion are presented.

Abstract:Surface energy and surface topography are two key factors in the wettability of solid substrates. The surface energy determines the contact angle (CA) of a liquid on a flat substrate and the geometrical factor enhances the wetting property for a hydrophilic surface (or non-wetting for a hydrophobic surface). Applying external stimuli is a valuable approach for rendering the change in surface chemistry and/or topography, and for driving the wettability transition of smart surfaces. This review describes the current state-of-the-art research on the reversibly switchable wettability of surface brought about by external stimuli, including surface conversion between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity prepared from inorganic oxides or/and photoactive organic molecules, movement of liquid droplets driven by molecular machines, and light-driven switching of superhydrophobic adhesion.

Due to its high degree of design freedom and excellent manufacturing flexibility, additive manufacturing is increasingly indispensable in surface and interface applications. This review additive manufacturing in applying droplet interface developed unique interfacial materials with particularly adaptable wettability, such as super anti-wetting surfaces (superhydrophobic and superoleophobic), innovative switchable surfaces, and water-collecting surfaces, by creating inspiration from natural surfaces and established a dedicated 3D printing material database to realize the development and screening of intelligent materials.

Abstract:The biomimetic principle of harnessing topographical structures to determine liquid motion behavior represents a cutting-edge direction in constructing green transportation systems without external energy input. Here, inspired by natural Nepenthes peristome, a novel anisotropic wettability surface with characteristic structural features of periodically aligned and overlapped arch-shaped microcavities, formed by employing ferrofluid assemblies as dynamic templates, is presented. The magnetic strength and orientation are precisely adjustable during the generation process, and thus the size and inclination angle of the ferrofluid droplet templates could be tailored to make the surface morphology of the resultant polymer replica achieve a high degree of similarity to the natural peristome. The resultant anisotropic wettability surface enables autonomous unidirectional water transportation in a fast and continuous way. In addition, it could be tailored into arbitrary shapes to induce water flow along a specific curved path. More importantly, based on the anisotropic wettability surface, novel pump-free microfluidic devices are constructed to implement multiphase flow reactions, which offer a promising solution to building low-cost, portable platform for lab-on-a-chip applications.
