Abstract:Nature organisms, after billions of years of evolution, have evolved elegant morphologies, structures, patterns, or surface wettabilities with unique functionalities. Among all the intriguing characteristics observed in nature organisms, their drag reduction abilities with low energy consumption have always attracted wide attentions of human beings, because of its great potentiality in various fields, e.g., marine vehicles, aircraft, pipeline transportation, microfluidics, etc. Recently, in-depth studies have been carried out to uncover various biological structures with distinguished drag reduction performance including shark skins, penguin feathers, dolphin skins, lotus leaves, and Nepenthes pitcher. In this review, we will give a succinct account of their drag-reduction mechanisms as well as introduce the recent biomimetic processes to create artificial drag-reduction surfaces. Meanwhile, the remaining challenges and future prospective of bio-inspired drag reduction are also briefly proposed. We hope this review can help people to learn about the natural wisdoms to reduce fluid resistance and stimulate people to develop efficient drag reduction approaches, which are essential for submarine and cargo ship navigation, air vehicles, pipeline transportation, microfluidic system, and so forth.

Abstract:It is well-known that the bio-inspired sharkskin covering the original pattern has the apparent drag reduction function in the turbulent flowing stations, which can be regarded as "sharkskin effect", and it has progressively been put application into the fluid engineering with obtaining great profits. In this paper, the anisotropic wetting phenomena on sharkskin are discovered, the contact angles and rolling angles on different orientations are not the same. In addition, the hydrodynamic experiments on different sharkskin surfaces are conducted, and the experimental results illustrate that the super-hydrophobic and drag-reducing properties on deformed biological surfaces are improved to some extent compared to the original morphology, which has important significance to expand its practical applications.
Experimental investigations on drag-reduction characteristics of bionic surface with water-trapping microstructures of fish scales

Abstract:Biological surfaces with unique wettability in nature have provided an enormous innovation for scientists and engineers. More specifically, materials possessing various wetting properties have drawn considerable attention owing to their promising application prospects. Recently, great efforts have been concentrated on the researches on wetting-induced drag-reduction materials inspired by biology because of their ability to save energy. In this work, the drag-reduction characteristics of the bionic surface with delicate water-trapping microstructures of fish Ctenopharyngodon idellus scales were explored by experimental method. Firstly, the resistance of smooth surface and bionic surface experimental sample at different speeds was carefully tested through the testing system for operation resistance. Then, the contact angle (CA) of fish scale surface was measured by means of the contact angle measuring instrument. It was discovered that the bionic surface created a rewarding drag-reduction effect at a low speed, and the drag-reduction rate significantly displayed a downward trend with the increase in flow speed. Thus, when the rate was 0.66 m/s, the drag-reduction effect was at the optimum level, and the maximum drag reduction rate was 2.805%, which was in concordance with the simulated one. Furthermore, a contact angle (CA) of 11.5° appeared on the fish scale surface, exhibiting fine hydrophilic property. It further manifested the spreading-wetting phenomenon and the higher surface energy for the area of apical of fish scales, which played an important role in drag-reduction performance. This work will have a great potential in the engineering and transportation field.

Abstract:Slippery surfaces, which originate in nature with special wettability, have drawn a great deal of attention for both fundamental research and practical applications in a variety of fields due to their unique characteristics of super‐low liquid friction and adhesion. Although the research of bioinspired slippery surfaces is in its infancy, it is a rapidly growing and enormously promising field. Herein, we present a systematic review of recent progress in bioinspired slippery surfaces, beginning with a brief introduction of several typical creatures with slippery property in nature. Subsequently, a detailed discussion the basic concepts of the wetting, friction and drag from micro and macro aspects and focus on the underlying slippery mechanism. We next summarize state‐of‐the‐art developments of the three categories of slippery surfaces of air‐trapped, liquid‐infused and liquid‐like slippery surfaces, including materials, design principles and preparation methods of slippery surfaces and highlight the emerging applications. Design and Analysis of Underwater Drag Reduction Property of Biomimetic Surface with Micro-nano Composite Structure

Abstract:Underwater drag reduction has an important impact on the speed and energy consumption of underwater vehicles. This is directly related to whether it can improve the operating efficiency of the underwater vehicle and whether it plays a role in energy-conservation and emission-reduction. A new type of bionic surface with micro-nano composite structure, which is designed to achieve drag reduction of the underwater vehicle is presented. And it is applied to a fish dart. The design source of the structure comes from dolphins’ ridge skin and mosquitoes’ mouthparts. The design of the structure is based on the method of bionics. A fluid mechanics method is taken to simulate the drag reduction effect of the micro-nano composite structure. According to the results of simulation optimization, the drag reduction mechanism of the composite structure is analyzed. From the analysis, the optimal structural parameters can be obtained. The simulation results show that the underwater drag reduction rate can reach 89.49% in the optimal structural parameters.

Abstract:The integration of creatures and nature has become more and more perfect during biological evolution. Unique structure characteristics, material properties, and special functions of organisms can provide an inexhaustible source for human scientific thoughts, technological inventions, and solutions to engineering and technical problems. The high-speed swimming capacity of aquatic organisms has long attracted growing attention in recent years. Underwater drag reduction is a functional strategy formed by the long-term evolution of high-speed swimming organisms such as fish. Revealing the connection between the structure characteristics, mechanical properties of fish skin and drag reduction provides a feasible solution to the high surface frictional resistance. This paper reviews the topography characteristics and material properties, bionic fabricating, and drag reduction mechanism of fish skin. In the end, both existing problems and future research prospects of bionic surfaces are proposed. This paper may provide a better and more comprehensive understanding of the current research status of fish skin inspired drag reduction and provide a feasible reference for further revealing the excellent hydrodynamic performance of fish and solving the surface friction resistance on high-speed moving surfaces.

Abstract:Bioinspired grooved surface structure design has been widely used as an efficient passive flow control method in drag reduction. The total drag of plate with grooved surface structure can be decomposed into friction and pressure drag. In this paper, the relationship between them and the distribution of vortex structure in flow field has been analyzed for obtaining the drag reduction mechanism of grooved surface structure. The concept of 'Vortex-Driven Design' is proposed to improve the performance of conventional periodic single-level grooved surface structure. A design scheme of micro-nano scale nested-grooved surface structure with better drag reduction performance is given. The authors conduct numerical simulation of rectangular nested-grooved surface structure in laminar flow considering rarefaction based on Lattice Boltzmann Method at high Knudsen number. The results show that the nested-grooved surface structure induces higher complexity in the secondary vortex structure, and that the changes of vorticity distribution and flow characteristics drive the changes of velocity distribution and shear stress in the grooved surface. Compared with conventional grooved surface structure, the average friction drag of the surface is further reduced. Two geometric optimization cases of the conventional grooved surface and nested-grooved surface are realized by Genetic Algorithm, showing that the maximum drag reduction rate of the optimal nested-grooved surface can reach 18.76% while that of the optimal conventional grooved surface only reaches 13.61%. Based on 'Vortex-Driven Design', an innovative material improvement method for drag reduction is proposed as a new direction for subsequent research on microstructure in terms of drag reduction and energy conservation.
On Interfacial Deformation and Resistance Characteristics over Superhydrophobic Surfaces: A Numerical Study

Abstract:The air/water interface, known as the plastron, entrapped in submerged superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs), plays a crucial role in underwater drag reduction. However, the plastron can be easily deformed or collapsed by turbulent flow, leading to decreased drag reduction or even an increase in drag. Most previous numerical studies have simplified these interfaces as idealized flat or curved rigid boundaries. To thoroughly investigate the interfacial behavior of SHSs, this study presents a numerical comparison between ideal and dynamic interfaces. The plastron undergoes regular oscillations after a brief adaptation period, transitioning between convex, nearly flat, and concave shapes. During the oscillatory decay, the dynamic properties of the interface modify the surface drag of the SHSs by both affecting the viscous drag and introducing pressure drag. The viscous drag is affected in two main ways. First, the momentum exchange across the dynamic interface is enhanced due to the roughness-like effect, leading to an increased viscous drag in groove region. Second, the trailing interfaces induce step flows and secondary flows downstream of the grooves, creating regions of nonuniform shear stresses. Consequently, the viscous drag of the downstream walls is slightly reduced. Overall, for convex and nearly flat interfaces, the drag increase within the groove region outweighs the drag reduction at the downstream walls, resulting in a total drag increase in 47.3% and 29.8%, respectively. Conversely, for concave interfaces, the drag increase within the groove region is smaller than the drag reduction at the downstream walls, leading to a 9.8% decrease in total drag.
Improved Stable Drag Reduction of Controllable Laser-Patterned Superwetting Surfaces Containing Bioinspired Micro/Nanostructured Arrays

Abstract:Superwetting surfaces are widely used in many engineering fields for reducing energy and resistance loss. A facile and efficient method using laser etching has been used to fabricate and control superwettable drag reduction surfaces. Inspired by the self-cleaning theory of lotus leaves, we propose controllable patterned bionic superhydrophobic surfaces (BSSs) simulating the uneven micro/nanostructures of lotus leaves. The superhydrophobicity and drag reduction ratios at low velocities are highly improved using a laser ablation method on metal substrates. However, unstable air layers trapped on superhydrophobic surfaces are usually cut away by a high-velocity flow, which greatly reduces the drag reduction performance. The fabricated bionic superhydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces (BSHSs) with alternated hydrophilic strips can build a large surface energy barrier to bind the three-phase contact line. It maintains the stable drag reduction by capturing the air bubbles attached to the hydrophilic strips at a high velocity. Three-dimensional simulation analysis and equipment to measure the weak friction of a self-assembled solid-liquid interface are used to explain the drag reduction mechanism and measure the drag reduction ratios at different flow speeds. BSSs achieve an improved drag reduction effect (maximum 52.76%) at a low velocity (maximum 1.5568 m/s). BSHSs maintain an improved and steady drag reduction effect at high speed. The drag reduction ratios can be maintained at about 30% at high speed, with a maximum value of 4.448 m/s. This research has broad application prospects in energy saving, liquid directional transportation, and shipping due to their robust superhydrophobic properties and stable drag reduction effect.

Abstract:Based on interfacial convection in the presence of solvent evaporation, a novel method for the fabrication of a micro-structured surface is proposed to facilitate drag reduction. A mixture was coated on a substrate through a specially developed spray-painting system. Micron scale pits formed spontaneously in the coated surface because of interfacial convection and deformation driven by the gradient of the interfacial tension. Experimental results indicated that particles in the mixture played a crucial role in pit formation, and with a suitable selection of particle size and dosage, the characteristic parameters of the pitting could be controlled. The drag reduction experiments were first performed in a water tunnel, and the results showed that the micro-structured surface had a remarkable drag reduction performance over a great range of flow speeds.

Abstract:Reducing resistance to surface friction is challenging in the field of engineering. Natural biological systems have evolved unique functional surfaces or special physiological functions to adapt to their complex environments over centuries. Among these biological wonders, fish, one of the oldest in the vertebrate group, have garnered attention due to their exceptional fluid dynamics capabilities. Fish skin has inspired innovation in reducing surface friction due to its unique structures and material properties. Herein, drawing inspiration from the unique properties of fish scales, a periodic array of fish scales was fabricated by laser ablation on a polished aluminum template. The morphology of the biomimetic fish scale surface was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and a white-light interfering profilometer. Drag reduction performance was measured in a closed circulating water tunnel. The maximum drag reduction was 10.26% at a Reynolds number of 39,532, and the drag reduction performance gradually decreased with an increase in the distance between fish scales. The mechanism of the biomimetic drag reduction surface was analyzed using computational fluid dynamics. Streamwise vortices were generated at the valley of the biomimetic fish scale, replacing sliding friction with rolling friction. These results are expected to provide a foundation for in-depth analysis of the hydrodynamic performance of fish and serve as new inspiration for drag reduction and antifouling.

Abstract:The first part of this section is introduced different preparation methods of artificial shark skin surface, including direct bio-replicated vivid shark skin, large-proportional amplification and shrunken bio-replication of shark skin, embossing forming technology and bionic composite drag reduction surface. Based on the above preparation methods, the drag reduction effects of bionic shark skin surface and composite surface of bionic shark skin are briefly discussed in the second section. It provides technical reference for the preparation of bionic surface. The third part introduced the bioinspired anti-icing surface from superhydrophobic lotus leaf and the mechanism of energy-saving dynamic anti-icing integrated with electric heating; in detail, the melting frost self-jumping phenomenon on Cassie-ice superhydrophobic surfaces and the underlying mechanism was introduced, and the ice delaying, dynamic ice adhesion reduction and energy-saving dynamic anti-icing on fiberglass cloth based superhydrophobic coatings was introduced. The results provided theoretical support for anti-icing applications of superhydrophobic coatings.
Stable drag reduction of anisotropic superhydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces containing bioinspired micro/nanostructured arrays by laser ablation

Abstract:Drag reduction using superhydrophobic surfaces is one of the most significant strategies to reduce energy consumption and drag losses in marine vessels and fluid channels. However, the trapped air at a solid-liquid interface on superhydrophobic surfaces usually becomes unstable under high flow speed impact, results the drag reduction effect is greatly reduced. Inspired by bionic fish scales, we propose asymmetric anisotropic superhydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces (ASHS) simulating the asymmetric array structures of fish to improve the drag reduction ratios with a nanosecond laser ablation technology on aluminum-magnesium alloy. The alternated hydrophilic strips form a large surface energy barrier to strongly pin the three-phase contact line of air/water/solid for capturing air bubbles. ASHS presents different superhydrophobic properties along the positive parallel direction (PD) and the inverse direction (RD) parallel to the fish moving. Simulation models and a self-assembled solid-liquid interface friction test device can demonstrate the anisotropic drag reduction mechanism and test the drag reduction property in laminar flows. ASHS maintains a stable and improved anisotropic drag reduction effect at high speed (maximum 4.448 m/s). The study has provided promising applications in the fields of reducing energy consumption, liquid directional transportation, marine vessels.
A Bio-Inspired Drag Reduction Method of Bionic Fish Skin Mucus Structure

Abstract:Efforts to enhance the speed and reduce the energy consumption of underwater vehicles have led to the proposal of a novel mucus release structure inspired by the secretion of mucus cells on fish skin. This structure features interconnected microgrooves with excellent flexibility for adjusting to different states, effectively reducing drag through mucus release. Numerical analysis of the drag reduction performance of the mucous-releasing micro-pore structure was conducted using ANSYS Fluent 19.2 software. This structure is capable of reducing the velocity gradient near the wall and, owing to the presence of micro-pore structures, decreasing the overall compressed area, thereby achieving drag reduction effects. The experimental results revealed a drag reduction effect of 20.56% when the structure was bent at an angle of 120°. The drag reduction varied under different attitudes such as tension and compression. This mucus release structure achieves reusability through a direct mucous injection process. This research provides valuable insights for the drag reduction study of underwater vehicles, such as ships and submarines, laying a foundation for advancing the development and applications of this field in the future.
A bio-inspired two-stage bionic drag reduction method

Abstract:Reducing the surface resistance of underwater vehicles plays an important role in improving cruising speed and cruising mileage. The epidermis of loaches is not only covered with a layer of scale structure but also secretes mucus tissue with a lubricating effect, which makes loaches swim rapidly in muddy water. Study the morphology and structure of the skin of loach and establish a two-stage biomimetic drag reduction model. Adjust the different structural parameters of the model and select the parameters with the best drag reduction rate for the modeling design. The numerical simulation results show that the optimal drag reduction rate of the two-stage drag reduction structure is greater than 21%. In the flow channel test experiment, the drag reduction rate is slightly lower than the simulation results. Numerical simulation and experimental data show that the underwater drag reduction function can be realized by simulating the microstructure of loach skin. Finally, analyze the velocity gradient, vortices, etc., and search for the drag reduction mechanism. The simulation design of the microstructure of the loach skin can increase the thickness of the boundary layer, promote the vortex structure near the wall surface, change the flow mode of the solid–liquid interface, and reduce the wall resistance. At the same time, the drag reduction model provides key technical support for the practical application of reducing surface resistance, such as in underwater vehicles.

Abstract:Ships and underwater vehicles require substantial energy to overcome fluid drag during navigation, constraining their speed and range. The convergent, divergent tilted cone surfaces, and straight conical surface were designed and fabricated, and particle image velocimetry based on recirculating water tunnel was employed to measure first and second-order statistics of the flow field across seven samples at different Reynolds numbers in this study, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is innovatively used to extract the main dynamic features in the flow field, the structure of hairpin-like vortices on different surfaces is identified using the finite-time Lyapunov exponential method. The results reveal that the maximum drag reduction rate of the biomimetic divergent surface can be achieved by 10.48 % . The probability of the occurrence of the jet Q2 and sweep Q4 events of biomimetic divergent surfaces is decreased. POD analyses showed that the microstructure caused energy to be dissipated during transport, and that the intensity of the large-scale structure was significantly reduced. These findings provide a theoretical basis and new perspectives for developing innovative biomimetic drag reduction surfaces, offering potential enhancements in quality and efficiency for the ship transportation industry.
