Abstract:•Core-shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticle toughened epoxy asphalt (EA) has been developed.•The toughness of the pure EA increases by 2-fold with only addition of 1 wt% CSR.•The shell of CSR is broken and the core of CSR swells in the EA.•Newly micro-scale CSR phase uniformly disperses in the epoxy phase of the EA.•CSR nanoparticles alters the mechanism of phase separation of the pure EA.
