Abstract:Through acoustic emission on-line monitoring system, the effective value of acoustic emission is measured, which produces in the grinding of fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The mapping relationship, grinding parameters and the effective value of acoustic emission, is discussed qualitatively. And the influence of different grinding directions on the effective value and spectrum also is studied. These could be significant guidance for controlling the grinding process to improve the machining quality.

Abstract:This chapter performs acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of damage behaviors in carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates during tensile loads under hygrothermal environment. A feature extraction model is established based on the original waveforms of AE signals. Tensile tests synchronized with AE tests are carried out on carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates under different environments. A feature extraction and representation method is developed based on the wavelet packet decomposition and Shannon's entropy so as to cover the full frequency domain. Based on the extracted features, cosine similarity and clustering algorithms are employed to achieve damage mode identification during the failure process of composite laminates. The influence of hygrothermal aging on damage source localization, damage initiation and evolution, and the AE features is analyzed.

Abstract:The correlation between acoustic characteristics and mechanical behaviors shows great significance for health monitoring and characterization. This paper develops a new quantitative model based on the modified Mel-frequency cepstral analysis and statistical methods so as to link acoustic emission (AE) features with mechanical behaviors of end-notched flexure (ENF) composite laminates. First, the Mel-frequency cepstral analysis in automatic speech recognition is modified to adapt to AE sensors and signals. Second, the modified Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) are extracted from original waveforms of AE hits for damage characterization of composites. MFCC0 is taken as an effective feature to qualitatively discriminate damage stages and to identify the pre-failure critical point. The decreasing patterns of MFCC1 and MFCC2 for ENF specimens can be clearly observed with the loading time by using the simple moving average method. Third, pencil lead breaks are repeatedly conducted on the healthy specimen to verify the pattern in the degraded specimen. Finally, a further investigation based on the cumulative moving average method demonstrates that MFCC1 and MFCC2 are quadratic and linear functions of the load ratio or the deflection ratio, respectively. In addition, the latter is more suitable to be an indicator of damage accumulation of composite laminates.

Abstract:The single factor experience of Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites (briefly named FCC) grinding was done on a NC optical curve grinding machine, and then the morphologie of the grinding surface was observed with an optical microscope. The effect of the grinding parameters, which include mainly grinding depth, abrasive grain size of diamond grinding wheel and grinding direction, on the grinding-induced surface damage of FCC was discussed, finally, the paper drew the conclusions that both increasing of grinding depth and increasing of abrasive grain sizes of diamond wheel can make the grinding-induced surface damage worse, and that different grinding directions also produce different effects on the grinding-induced surface damage.

Abstract:Abstract Interest in damage detection and damage pattern recognition of engineering structures by non-destructive techniques has been increasingly growing. As a non-destructive technique, acoustic emission (AE) has developed rapidly to detect dynamic defects and their evolution behaviors of composite structures, based on the transient elastic waves produced by rapid energy release due to the geometry change of structures. In this paper, AE technology is utilized to monitor the real-time condition of the composite scarf joint (SJ) under tensile loading. First, after AE signal acquisition, dimensionality reduction of eight AE features is realized by employing principal component analysis such that the Curse of Dimensionality can be avoided. Second, feature selection is continued by introducing two evaluation indexes, i.e., correlation coefficient and Laplacian score. Third, after the optimal cluster number is determined, damage pattern recognition is accomplished by introducing k-means++ algorithm which explores the distribution of each pattern in the space constructed by four informative AE features. Based on the clustering results, damage initiation and evolution in SJ specimens under tensile loading are subsequently explored. The shear failure of the adhesive layer which is a characteristic damage pattern for SJ specimens shows a relatively-high activity after the early stage. Matrix cracking and fiber/matrix interface debonding are two fundamental damage patterns which keep active in the whole process.

Abstract:This article studies experimentally the damage behaviors of a 59.5-m-long composite wind turbine blade under accelerated fatigue loads using acoustic emission technique. First, the spectral analysis using the fast Fourier transform is used to study the components of acoustic emission signals. Then, three important objectives including the attenuation behaviors of acoustic emission waves, the arrangement of sensors as well as the detection and positioning of defect sources in the composite blade by developing the time-difference method among different acoustic emission sensors are successfully reached. Furthermore, the clustering analysis using the bisecting K-means method is performed to identify different damage modes for acoustic emission signal sources. This work provides a theoretical and technique support for safety precaution and maintaining of in-service blades.

Abstract:As a non-destructive technique, Acoustic emission (AE) can be employed to detect the damage inside the material passively and then locate the damage source. However, fatigue loading poses challenges to AE signal acquisition and processing. In this paper, AE monitoring is performed on glass fiber/epoxy composite laminates under fatigue loads. Due to the intrinsic noise, wavelet packet decomposition is used for noise elimination. Results show that the noise components in original AE signals can be effectively eliminated by the wavelet analysis. Based on the difference of the arrival times, the line positioning method is shown to locate AE sources appearing in the laminates successfully. The peak frequency characteristic of each AE signal is utilized for damage mode classification. The fracture of the laminate is governed by delamination and fiber/breakage, followed by fiber/matrix interface debonding.

Abstract:Acoustic emission technology is an effective nondestructive testing method for fiber-reinforced composites, which can monitor the damage process in real time. The main purpose of this paper is to review the information from the various literature articles published on mechanical property and acoustic emission technology of fiber-reinforced composites. It presents a comprehensive review of acoustic emission source location, damage mechanism analysis and life prediction. Initially, several localization methods were introduced in detail under known and unknown sound velocities. More importantly, cluster analysis (unsupervised learning and supervised learning) and waveform processing based on acoustic emission detection technology were discussed. Furthermore, features regarding the prediction of the remaining strength or service life of the composites were listed and explained. Finally, the future development of acoustic emission precise location and intelligent damage pattern recognition were prospected. Starting from the achievable functions, it provides theoretical support for the wider application and further development of the technology.

Abstract:The complex failure mechanisms that are commonly considered as the distinctive characteristic of composites are being amenable to nondestructive test advance. This research adopts the acoustic emission technique to study the failure mechanisms and damage evolution of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates. Effects of different lay-up patterns and hole sizes on the acoustic emission response are studied to set up the mapping between the failure properties and the acoustic signal features such as the energy, counting and amplitude. Moreover, the microscopic properties of different composite specimens after fracture are watched and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on the mapping conception, the controlling microscopic failure mechanisms of composites including the splitting matrix cracking, fiber/matrix interface debonding, fiber pull-out and breakage as well as delamination are identified. It is expected the influence of complex lay-up patterns and sizes on the damage and failure properties of composites is represented by creating true mapping based on the acoustic emission technique. Abstract:Understanding the damage and failure of carbon/glass epoxy hybrid woven composites under tensile loading based on acoustic emission signals is a challenging task in their practical uses. In this study, an approach based on fuzzy c-means algorithm is proposed to process the acoustic emission signals from tensile loading of composites monitored by combining acoustic emission technology and digital image correlation method. The results show that the acoustic emission signals from tensile loading can be divided into three clusters. The three clusters correspond to three kinds of damage modes including matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, delamination, and fiber breakage. By comparing the acoustic characteristics of these classes, a correlation procedure between the clusters and the damage mechanisms observed is proposed. Meanwhile, it can be found that debonding and fiber break signals for glass fiber correspond to a lower frequency range than that for carbon fiber. Moreover, the method combining acoustic emission and digital image correlation can effectively monitor the damage process of the specimen both on the inside and outside, which can provide a reference for the health monitoring of composite structure.

This study mainly investigated the effect of machining parameters on acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in grinding three-dimensional carbon/carbon ceramic matrix composites with superabrasive diamond grinding points. Signal processing techniques including fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (SWFT) were applied to evaluate frequency features of AE signals. The RMS values were used as an indicator to detect grinding energy releasing characteristics. Results indicated that grinding speed and grinding depth were the main influencing factors on RMS values, while feed speed presented limited effects. The maximum undeformed chip thickness hmax and active grits number were two key factors affecting RMS variation of the AE signals, which corresponded to the intensity of single AE source and the number of total AE ones, respectively. The material removal mechanisms were studied via detailed SEM micrographs of machined surfaces, revealing that fiber fracture and debonding were the main material removal modes in point grinding carbon/carbon composites. The material removal mode can be possibly identified from the frequency of AE signal, as the band of 12–35 kHz mainly corresponded to fiber fracture, 35–70 kHz referred to debonding between the fiber and matrix, 70–90 kHz indicated the frictions, and the fourth band (90–120 kHz) was related to the matrix cracks.

Abstract:Acoustic emission monitoring is a useful technique to deal with detection and identification of damage in composite materials. Over the last few years, identification of damage through intelligent signal processing was particularly emphasized. Data-driven models are developed to predict the remaining useful lifetime. Finite elements modeling (FEM) was used to simulate AE signals due to fiber break and fiber/matrix debonding in a model carbon fiber composite and thereby better understand the AE signals and physical phenomena. This paper presents a computational analysis of AE waveforms resulting from fiber break and fiber/matrix debonding. The objective of this research was to compare the AE signals from a validated fiber break simulation to the AE signals obtained from fiber/matrix debonding and fiber break obtained in several media and to discuss the capability to detect and identify each source.

Abstract:This paper investigates the hoop tensile mechanical properties, damage mode classification, and damage evolution process of the filament wound CFRP composite structure with different winding angles by acoustic emission and deep learning. Firstly, a clear correspondence between damage modes and peak frequency ranges is established by using k-means clustering results and eight frequency band ranges obtained by wavelet packet transform. On this basis, three damage modes are characterized according to the energy content of different frequency bands. Subsequently, the trained Mel spectrum-CNN classification model is used to identify damage modes and analyze the damage evolution process. The results show that the hoop tensile strength of the filament wound CFRP composite structure with ±55° is higher than that with ±35°. The primary damage modes during the tensile process are matrix cracking and fiber/matrix debonding. The Mel spectrogram-based damage identification method can effectively classify damage modes. In addition, the combination of acoustic emission and deep learning shows significant potential for damage identification and monitoring.

Abstract:This work studies delamination behaviors of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates under different loading rates using acoustic emission (AE) that shows large advantage for dynamic monitoring of instantaneous defects by analyzing characteristic signal parameters. Generally, rate-dependent damage behaviors of composites poses challenges to AE signal analysis and failure mode identification during a short time. In order to study dynamic mixed-mode delamination behaviors, the single-leg three-point bending tests for carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates with initial intralaminar and interlaminar truncation sizes under different loading rates are performed. Effects of the loading rate and layup pattern on the delamination behaviors of composites are studied by analyzing the AE responses including the amplitude and energy.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced ceramic composites are relatively promising materials in aerospace and other high-tech area. In this work, the grinding mechanism of 2.5-dimensional woven quartz fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites was researched by experimental analysis. The acoustic emission (AE) combined with wavelet analysis was adopted to evaluate the grinding process. The ratio of energy which may indicate the mode of fracture of the composites was used for analyzing each of the AE signals levels. The effects of meso-structure on AE frequency distribution have been discussed. It was found that that specific frequency band is corresponding to the specific fracture mode, such as fiber fracture, interface debonding and matrix fracture. It indicates that grinding mechanism is highly dependent on the meso-structure of the composites.

Abstract:This work performs acoustic emission monitoring of damage behaviors in carbon fiber/ epoxy composite laminates during tensile loads under hygrothermal environment. First, a waveform-based clustering method is introduced by employing the wavelet packet decomposition (WPD), the Shannon's entropy, the cosine similarity and the clustering algorithm. Second, based on the clustering results, the characteristic features of various damage modes are derived. Finally, further investigation is carried out to explore the effects of hygrothermal aging on the damage source localization, damage initiation and evolution. From the theoretical analysis, several conclusions are obtained: 1. Fiber breakage behaves as a combination of matrix cracking, fiber/matrix interface debonding and delamination in the space of extracted features. 2. The frequency response of each damage mode is demonstrated to be degraded after hygrothermal aging. The principal features of fiber/matrix interface debonding and delamination are found to be significantly affected by hygrothermal aging as compared to other two damage modes. 3. The distortion of the principal feature of each micro-damage mode is found to be negligible with the damage accumulation, indicating the robustness of the method.

Abstract:Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are widely used in lightweight structures because of their high specific strength, specific modulus, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Additionally, the unidirectionally arrayed chopped strand (UACS) laminates have excellent mechanical properties and flowability, making them suitable for fabricating structures with complex geometry. In this paper, the damage process of UACS quasi-isotropic laminates under tensile load was tested using acoustic emission detection technology. The mechanical properties and damage failure mechanism of UACS laminates were studied combined with finite element calculation. By comparing and analyzing the characteristic parameters of acoustic emission signals such as amplitude, relative energy, and impact event, it is found that acoustic emission behavior can accurately describe the damage evolution of specimens during loading. The results show that the high-amplitude signals representing fiber fracture in continuous fiber laminates are concentrated in the last 41%, while in UACS laminates they are concentrated in the last 30%. In UACS laminates, more of the damage is caused by matrix cracks and delamination with medium- and low-amplitude signals, which indicates that UACS laminates have a good suppression effect on damage propagation. The stress–strain curves obtained from finite element analysis agree well with the experiment results, showing the same damage sequence, which confirms that the model described in this research is reliable.

Abstract:To gain an insight into the damage mechanism in carbon fiber reinforced polymer, a real-time analytical approach for damage mode identification of composite based on machine learning and acoustic emission is proposed. Firstly, waveform features are extracted from the acoustic emission signals with low information entropy through wavelet packet transform, where the high-dimensional feature vectors represent the main features of the reconstructed signals in the frequency domain. Combined with the autoencoder and k-means ++ algorithm, a waveform-based clustering model is constructed to reveal the relevance between acoustic emission signals and damage modes. Finally, the damage mode recognition of different types of composite laminates is achieved by the developed softmax layer classifier. The identification and the quantitative analysis of damage modes for prefabricated defects specimens demonstrate the robustness of the method. The method is effective and feasible for real-time monitoring of the damage evolution process of carbon fiber reinforced composite components.
Study on FRP composite materials' damage based on the acoustic emission testing technology

Abstract:Study the tensile damage and fracture behavior of FRP composite materials by the acoustic emission technology, broadband sensors record the acoustic emission signals when composite materials in the process of tensile damage at different fiber angle. The acoustic emission characteristics of FRP composite materials’ tensile damage was analyzed by 3D parameter methods. Analysis the amplitude of composite materials’ acoustic emission signal statistically reveals the development, evolution processes and regulations of FRP composite materials’ tensile damage that are in different angle on macro.

Abstract:Damage prognostics of fiber-reinforced composites using advanced nondestructive test techniques is of great significance due to their complicated damage mechanisms. This paper employs the acoustic emission (AE) technique to monitor the performance degradation process and to estimate the residual load-bearing abilities of glass fiber/epoxy composite laminates with the damage evolution of various failure modes. Based on the prior knowledge of AE signals, a prognostic model by combining the feature evaluation algorithms and deep learning methods is developed. First, the model conducts the feature evaluation on twenty-four AE features and filters out the degradation-insensitive features from the multiple perspectives of different AE sensors. Second, a convolutional neural network model is built and trained on five informative features for the degradation estimation. The estimation accuracy is validated to be generally high that depends on the degradation stage. Third, the effect of the number of AE signals in an input sequence on the estimation is further investigated. Results show that such a prognostic model provides a feasible path to quantify the degradation process and damage tolerance of composite materials.
