Abstract:Shock-induced Ti-rich melt pockets in a basaltic eucrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 8003 were studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Unique mineral assemblages consisting of clinopyroxene, ilmenite, vestaite, corundum, and kyanite are observed. Among them, vestaite and corundum in NWA 8003 are first reported to occur in eucrite meteorites. Petrographic and chemical evidences indicate that the Ti-rich melt pockets have formed by in-situ melting of ilmenite, plagioclase, pyroxene, and possibly minor silica and apatite nearby. The temperature rise and melting were caused by the high shock impedance contrast at interfaces between ilmenite and other phases with a distinctly lower density. Crystallization pressure, temperature and cooling time of the Ti-rich melt pockets in NWA 8003 are constrained to be ˜0.9–˜10 GPa, ˜1300–˜1730 °C, and < 1 ms (5–50 μm in size), respectively.

Abstract:Highly fractionated granites and pegmatites have special petrogenesis and potential economic significance due to the enrichment of incompatible elements (Li, Rb, Cs, etc.) and flux elements (F, B, Li, etc.) in the magmatic volatile phase (MVP). Here we decipher the origin of the giant Zhengchong Rb-dominated deposit associated with highly fractionated A-type granite in South China. An extreme fractional crystallization (up to 98.3%) was required to generate super enrichment of incompatible elements and flux elements by the model of single-step in situ crystallization. An alternative model incorporates episodic remobilization and multistage in situ crystallization of a long-lived mush. The MVP and incompatible elements migrate via reactive flow at intermediate degree of crystallization (70-80%) in each intrusion fits with the observed geochronological and geochemistry data. This geochemical model can help us understand the evolution of magma reservoirs and the concept of magmatic distillation columns.
Shock‐induced Phase Transformation of Anorthitic Plagioclase in the Eucrite Meteorite Northwest Africa 2650

Abstract:Anorthite is an important constituent mineral in basaltic achondrites from small celestial bodies. Its high‐pressure phase transformation in shocked meteorites has not been systematically studied. In this study, we report the diverse phase transformation behaviors of anorthite in a shocked eucrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2650, which also contains coesite, stishovite, vacancy‐rich clinopyroxene, super‐silicic garnet, and reidite. Anorthite in NWA 2650 has transformed into anorthite glass (anorthite glassy vein, maskelynite, and glass with a schlieren texture and vesicles), tissintite and dissociated into three‐phase assemblage grossular + kyanite + silica glass. Different occurrences of anorthite glass might have formed via the mechanism involving shear melting, solid‐state transformation, and postshock thermally melting, respectively. Tissintite could have crystallized from a high‐pressure plagioclase melt. The nucleation of tissintite might be facilitated by relict pyroxene fragments and the early formed vacancy‐rich clinopyroxene. The three‐phase assemblage grossular, kyanite, and silica glass should have formed from anorthitic melt at high‐pressure and high‐temperature conditions. The presence of maskelynite and reidite probably suggests a minimum peak shock pressure up to 20 GPa, while the other high‐pressure phases indicate that the shock pressure during the crystallization of shock melt veins might vary from >8 GPa to >2 GPa with a heterogeneous temperature distribution.
Vestaite, (ti4+fe2+)ti34+o9, a New Mineral in the Shocked Eucrite Northwest Africa 8003

Abstract:Our investigations on the shocked eucrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 8003 revealed the occurrence of a new mineral, vestaite [IMA 2017-068; (Ti4+Fe2+)Ti34+O9]. This mineral coexists with corundum, ilmenite, and Al-Ti-rich pyroxene in shock melt pockets. It has an empirical chemical formula of (Ti-0.73(4+) Fe0.632+Al0.60Mn0.03Mg0.02Cr0.01)Ti34+O9 and the monoclinic C2/c structure of schreyerite. The ideal vestaite structure can be considered as a modular structure with an alternate intergrowth of M3O5-type (M = Ti4+,Fe2+,Al) and Ti2O4-type slabs. Alternatively, it can also be envisaged as a crystallographic shear structure with periodically shearing of rutile or alpha-PbO2 units. Streaking and splitting of diffraction spots observed in selected-area electron diffraction patterns indicate planar defects in the modular structure of vestaite. Our observations reveal that vestaite crystallized at high pressure (<= 10 GPa) from a melt that represents a mixture of ilmenite and silicate components. A robust constraint on its formation conditions and stability field cannot yet be provided due to the lack of experimental data for these systems. Vestaite is a new, shock-generated mineral first found in a meteorite of the howarditeeucrite-diogenite (HED) clan, the largest achondrite group. Its discovery is not only of significance to the meteoritic mineralogy, but it could also be of interest to materials science.

Abstract:Abstract We report on the discovery of two high-pressure minerals, tuite and ahrensite, located in two small shock-induced melt pockets (SIMP 1 and 2) in the Zagami martian meteorite, coexisting with granular and acicular stishovite and seifertite. Tuite identified in this study has two formation pathways: decomposition of apatite and transformation of merrillite under high-P-T conditions. Chlorine-bearing products, presumably derived from the decomposition of apatite, are concentrated along the grain boundaries of tuite grains. Nanocrystalline ahrensite in the pyroxene clast in SIMP 2 is likely to be a decomposition product of pigeonite under high-P-T conditions by a solid-state transformation mechanism. The pressure and temperature conditions estimated from the high-pressure minerals in the shock-induced melt pockets are ~12–22 GPa and ~1100–1500 °C, respectively, although previous estimates of peak shock pressure are higher. This discrepancy probably represents the shift of kinetic relative to thermodynamic phase boundaries, in particular the comparatively small region that we examine here, rather than a principal disagreement between the peak shock conditions.

Petrogenesis of basaltic shergottite Northwest Africa 5298: Closed‐system crystallization of an oxidized mafic melt

Abstract:Northwest Africa (NWA) 5298 is an evolved basaltic shergottite that has bulk characteristics and mineral compositions consistent with derivation from an oxidized reservoir in Mars. Chemically zoned clinopyroxene (64.5%, augite and pigeonite), with interstitial lath-shaped plagioclase (29.4%, An(40) to An(55)), constitutes the bulk of this meteorite. The plagioclase has been converted by shock to both isotropic maskelynite and spherulitic, birefringent feldspar representing a quenched vesicular melt. The remainder of the rock consists of minor amounts of Fe-Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite), phosphates (merrillite and apatite), silica polymorph, fayalite, pyrrhotite, baddeleyite, and minor hot desert weathering products (calcite and barite). Oxygen fugacity derived from Fe-Ti oxide thermobarometry is close to the quartz-fayalite-magnetite (QFM) buffer indicating that the late stage evolution of this magma occurred under more oxidizing condition than those recorded in most other shergottites. Merrillite contains the largest abundances of rare earth elements (REE) of all phases, thereby controlling the REE budget in NWA 5298. The calculated bulk rock REE pattern normalized to CI chondrite is relatively flat. The evolution of the normalized REE patterns of the bulk rock, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and phosphate in NWA 5298 is consistent with closed-system chemical behavior with no evidence of crustal contamination or postcrystallization disturbance of the REE contents of these phases.
Multiple magmatic-hydrothermal processes recorded by titanite from the Early Cretaceous Liangwan pluton, Tongbai Orogen

Abstract:Titanite is a common accessory mineral in igneous rocks and hydrothermal deposits. Micro-texture and in situ chemical analyses on titanite are expected to reveal complex magmatic-hydrothermal processes. The Liangwan granitic pluton in the Tongbai Orogen is dominated by monzogranite with abundant mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs). In this paper, an integrated study of LA-ICP-MS UPb ages, textural, trace elemental and Nd isotopic compositions of titanites were carried out for the Liangwan pluton to decipher multiple magmatic-hydrothermal processes. UPb dating results of zircon and titanite show that the Liangwan monzogranite and MMEs have similar crystallization ages of ca. 130 Ma. Combined with petrography and titanite geochemistry studies, MMEs are considered as magma mingling origin. According to the occurrence, texture, and chemical characteristics of titanite, four main types (Ttn-1 to Ttn-4) and several sub-types of titanite are identified in the Liangwan pluton. Among these types, Ttn-1, Ttn-2 g, and Ttn-4 g are from the monzogranites, while Ttn-2 m, Ttn-3, and Ttn-4 m mainly form in the MMEs. Ttn-1 grains are euhedral and show core-mantle texture. Their cores are characterized by high REEs, Nb, Ta, Th and Y contents, Th/U, Lu/Hf, and Y/Zr ratios, and low La/Ce, Nb/Ta rations, and relatively lower εNd (t) (−13.3 to −14.6) values, indicating that they are of magmatic origin and crystallized from the host monzogranites. However, Ttn-1's mantles and Ttn-3 grains show a reverse geochemical feature to those of Ttn-1's cores. Their relative higher εNd (t) (−12.1 to −13.9) values, suggest that they crystallized from a mafic magma. Both Ttn-2 g and Ttn-2 m contain abundant magnetite and ilmenite inclusions. They display geochemical characteristics between Ttn-1's cores and Ttn-3 but are closer to their host rocks, respectively. These features suggest that they are the product of the dissolution-reprecipitation of Ttn-1 in different magmas. Ttn-4 with few fluid inclusions, mostly existing as interstitial phases, is characterized by low REE, Y, HFSE, Th/U, LREEs(N)/HREEs(N), and high Nb/Ta, indicating that they are hydrothermal origin that were derived from the residual melt. Textural and geochemical features of various types of titanites indicate that repeated recharges of mafic magmas happened at the syn- to late- fractional crystallization of felsic magmas. Nd isotopic data on titanite recorded various degrees of isotopic re-equilibration between the two end-member magmas during different pulses of mafic magma. Our study demonstrates that titanite is a reliable indicator to reveal complicated magmatic-hydrothermal processes.

Formation and decomposition of vacancy-rich clinopyroxene in a shocked eucrite: New insights for multiple impact events

Abstract:Impact is a fundamental process shaping the formation and evolution of planets and asteroids. It is inevitable that some materials on the surface of planets and asteroids have been impacted for many times. However, unambiguous petrological records for multiple post-formation impact events are rarely described. Here, we report that the thin shock melt veins of the shocked eucrite Northwest Africa 8647 are dominated by a fine-grained intergranular or vermicular pigeonite and anorthite assemblage, rather than compact vacancy-rich clinopyroxene. Vacancy-rich clinopyroxene in the veins instead is ubiquitous as irregularly-shaped, relict grains surrounded by intergranular or vermicular pigeonite and anorthite assemblage. The silica fragments entrained in shock melt veins contain a coesite core and a quartz rim. The occurrences of vacancy-rich clinopyroxene and coesite can be best explained by two impact events. The first impact event produced the shock melt veins and lead to the formation of vacancy-rich clinopyroxene and coesite. The second impact event heated the fine-grained melt veins and lead to the widespread partial decomposition of vacancy-rich clinopyroxene and the partial back-transformation of coesite. This paper is the first report of the decomposition reaction of shock-induced vacancy-rich clinopyroxene in extraterrestrial materials. We propose that widespread decomposition and/or back-transformation of high-pressure minerals in shocked meteorites can be considered as important records of multiple impact events.

In Situ Pb‐Pb Dating of Silica‐rich Northwest Africa (NWA) 6594 Basaltic Eucrite and Its Constraint on Thermal History of the Vestan Crust

Abstract:Eucrites represent one of the major lithologies of the Vestan upper crust, which had experienced pervasive and intense thermal metamorphism. To better constrain the timing and mechanism of thermal metamorphism, we carried out in situ Pb-isotope analysis of an unbrecciated basaltic eucrite NWA 6594 on the basis of detailed mineralogical and petrographic investigations. Zircon Pb-Pb dating reveals that NWA 6594 emplaced before or at 4547 +/- 11 Ma (95% confidence, MSWD = 1.3). Studies of silica minerals indicate that NWA 6594 had experienced intense thermal metamorphism after emplacement, followed by a late impact reheating and rapid cooling. Apatite grains yield a weighted mean Pb-Pb age of 4523 +/- 2 Ma (95% confidence, MSWD = 0.76). This age could not be attributed to slow cooling after the initial crystallization, but most likely related to an independent thermal event that induced thermal metamorphism. The protracted time lag (~24 +/- 13 Myr) between zircon and apatite closure ages indicates that this thermal event is most probably induced by an intense impact event that was synchronous with the metal-silicate mixing event recorded by mesosiderites. HEDs may have experienced multiple stages of thermal metamorphism after emplacement. The late impact reheating occurred after thermal metamorphism, which caused crystallization of tridymite.
Two-pyroxene Intergrowth Exsolution Textures in Ophiolitic Chromites: Implications for the Deep Mantle Origin of the Mirdita Ophiolite, Albania

Abstract:Increasing mineralogical and textural evidence from podiform chromitites in ophiolites suggests their ultra-high-pressure origin (>150 km), challenging conventional models for their formation under low-pressure conditions (<60 km) in the upper mantle. However, this challenge remains controversial due to a lack of in situ mineralogical evidence. Here, we report new data and observations from the Skenderbeu massif in the Mirdita ophiolite, Albania. Transmission electron microscopy shows that these chromitites (Cr# = 41.8–43.2) have numerous exsolution lamellae of diopsidic clinopyroxene and orthoenstatite. These lamellae have a crystallographic topotaxy relationship with the host chromite, i.e. (020) Cpx ∥ ( 2 2 ¯ 0 ) Chr , ( 2 ¯ 00 ) Cpx ∥ (111) Chr and (010) Opx ∥ ( 2 2 ¯ 0 ) Chr , (200) Opx ∥ ( 2 2 ¯ 0 ) Chr , indicating an exsolution origin. The abundant presence of pyroxene exsolution lamellae in the centre of the host chromites implies the incorporation of Si 4+ and Ca 2+ cations in the precursor chromite, a CaFe 2 O 4 -structured high-pressure polymorph that is stable at >12.5 GPa (i.e. 380 km deep). These in situ nanoscale observations and their geological occurrence, together with previously discovered ophiolitic diamonds in the Mirdita ophiolite, suggest a much deeper origin for ophiolitic chromitites than conventional interpretations and provide a valuable opportunity to understand the composition of the deep mantle. Widespread tissintite in strongly shock‐lithified lunar regolith breccias

Abstract:Shock‐lithification is a fundamental process of making rocks from fine‐grained and porous regoliths on the surface of the Moon. Previous investigations have constrained potential shock pressures during shock‐lithification based on experimental and numerical simulations. However, pressure and temperature conditions during shock‐lithification have not been directly inferred from natural lunar breccias. Here, we report the discovery of widespread tissintite in strongly shock‐lithified lunar meteorites, accompanied occasionally by Si‐rich corundum and coesite. The coexistence of tissintite and coesite and the absence of stishovite in molten regions indicate a shock pressure of 4–8 GPa, which might be the pressure boundary between weak and strong shock‐lithification. Meanwhile, the presence of Si‐rich corundum imposes a temperature constraint of approximately 2300 K for the intergranular melts. This temperature constraint has profound significance for interpreting the behaviors of volatile and moderately volatile elements and remanent magnetization records during strongly shock‐lithification of lunar breccias.

High-Pressure Minerals in Eucrite Suggest A Small Source Crater on Vesta

Abstract:High-pressure minerals in meteorites are important records of shock events that have affected the surfaces of planets and asteroids. A widespread distribution of impact craters has been observed on the Vestan surface. However, very few high-pressure minerals have been discovered in Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite (HED) meteorites. Here we present the first evidence of tissintite, vacancy-rich clinopyroxene, and super-silicic garnet in the eucrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 8003. Combined with coesite and stishovite, the presence of these high-pressure minerals and their chemical compositions reveal that solidification of melt veins in NWA 8003 began at a pressure of >~10 GPa and ceased when the pressure dropped to <~8.5 GPa. The shock temperature in the melt veins exceeded 1900 °C. Simulation results show that shock events that create impact craters of ~3 km in diameter (subject to a factor of 2 uncertainty) are associated with sufficiently high pressures to account for the occurrence of the high-pressure minerals observed in NWA 8003. This indicates that HED meteorites containing similar high-pressure minerals should be observed more frequently than previously thought.
Geochemistry of polygenetic titanite traces metamorphic and anatectic processes during the exhumation of deeply subducted continental crust

Abstract:A systematic study of titanite UPb geochronology and geochemistry was carried out in conjunction with petrographical investigation and zircon UPb geochronology for migmatites from the Weihai region in the Sulu orogen. Petrochronology of titanite and zircon in the migmatites document one metamorphic event at ~227 Ma and subsequent two anatectic events at ~220 Ma and ~210 Ma, respectively, during decompressional exhumation of the deeply subducted continental crust in the Triassic. Different titanite zonations represent changes of metamorphic and anatectic conditions. Metamorphic titanite domains (Ttn-I) have high Al2O3, F but low Fe contents, and are depleted in LREE, Th, Zr, P with low Th/U, LREE/HREE ratios and relatively low εNd(t) values. Two types of peritectic titanite domains (Ttn-II and Ttn-III), both with high Th, Th/U, REE and HFSE but low Al2O3 and F contents, record two stages of crustal anatexis during the exhumation. Compared to Ttn-III domains, Ttn-II domains with brighter BSE imaging have higher Al, Fe, REE, Nb, Ta and P contents but lower Th/U, Nb/Ta and (La/Yb)N ratios. The decreasing pressures, different reaction mechanisms, variable coexisting minerals and changing fluid/melt compositions have significant impacts on titanite geochemistry. Titanite Al2O3 and F contents show synchronous decreases from core to rim, suggesting the effect at lower pressure, consistent with more intense FAl substitution at higher pressure. During the anatectic processes, Ttn-II domains show a tendency to be higher in Al, Fe, REE and HFSE contents than Ttn-III domains. This is attributed to different mineral stabilities and variable accessory minerals that were involved in peritectic reactions at different pressures, which also have influenced the compositions of simultaneously generated anatectic melts. The change of melt compositions (e.g., ASI) at different pressures would drastically modify the partition of trace elements between peritectic titanite and anatectic melt, resulting in highly fractionated trace element ratios, such as high Nb/Ta and (La/Yb)N as recorded in titanite rims. Therefore, accessory minerals such as titanite and zircon are not only important repositories of trace elements that can greatly fractionate the HFSE and REE, but also the excellent recorder of multiple fluid actions during the exhumation in collisional orogens.

Abstract:Carbonatites and alkaline rocks often exhibit a close spatial association with Nb and rare earth elements (REE) mineralization. Petrological and experimental studies suggest that carbonated and alkaline silicate melts can be formed directly through low-degree partial melting of a carbonate-bearing mantle. Alternatively, some propose that fractional crystallization followed by liquid immiscibility from mantle-derived magmas could be a viable model for the formation of carbonatites and alkaline rocks. In this study, samples from ultramafic to alkaline rocks and carbonatites in the Shangzhuang P-REE deposit, Western China are analyzed to investigate this issue. The complexes consist of biotite clinopyroxenite, fluorapatite-rich biotite clinopyroxenite, and calcite-K-feldsparamphibole-rich clinopyroxenite, interspersed with minor syenite and carbonatite dykes. These suites of rocks exhibit similar ages and Nd isotopic characteristics, indicating their derivation from a common magma source. Field, petrological, geochemical, and Ti isotopic investigations reveal the parental ultramafic melts (with high Mg-#, low HFSE, and chondritic delta Ti-49 values) undergo a differentiation process into carbonate- and alkaline-rich ultramafic silicate melts (enriched in REEs, HFSE and Fe). These carbon- and alkaline-rich melts then formed immiscible carbonatitic- (high REE and negative delta Ti-49 values of -1.78 to -0.49 %o) and alkaline silicate-melts (high Nb and delta Ti-49 values of +0.18 to +0.62 %o). The enrichment of REE and Nb in the system is attributed to magmatic crystallization differentiation and subsequent liquid immiscibility. This process resulted in the enrichment of REE in carbonatites, whereas alkaline rocks show a higher enrichment in Nb. This study provides a possible mechanism to explain the genetic linkage between carbonatites and alkaline rocks that is likely applicable to similar rock suites worldwide.
Source and parental melts of poikilitic shergottites: Implications for martian magmatism

Abstract:Martian poikilitic shergottites are cumulate rocks that can help advance the understanding of magmatic evolution from near the base of the crust (∼10 kbar) to near-surface conditions. Through a comprehensive petrographic and geochemical study, we aim to better understand poikilitic shergottite formation and the evolution in the martian interior. A suite of poikilitic shergottites including Northwest Africa (NWA) 7755, NWA 11043, NWA 11065, NWA 10618 and Alan Hills (ALHA) 77,005 were investigated for their major, minor, and trace element compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions (MI). The MI occur within both the early-evolutional stage textural and late-evolution stage textural domains in olivine. Major element compositions of MI indicate fractional crystallization between the early and late-crystallizing domains. Calculated parental melt compositions from these MI data yielded results that also petrogenetically link the poikilitic shergottites with the olivine-phyric shergottite subgroup. Trace element compositions of MI show that the later-crystallizing MI could have undergone open-system processes, such as fluid exsolution. Lutetium-Hf and Sm-Nd isotopic analyses were performed on NWA 7755 and NWA 11043 to constrain their age and source isotopic compositions. Northwest Africa 7755 shows a 176 Lu/ 177 Hf crystallization age of 223 ± 46 Ma, which fits into the expected range for enriched shergottites of ∼165 Ma to 225 Ma. A similar crystallization age and 176 Lu/ 177 Hf and 147 Sm/ 144 Nd source composition of NWA 7755 to the other enriched shergottites suggests that this specimen likely shares a long-lived geochemical source with these samples that has lasted for at least 60 Ma. Northwest Africa 11043 shows scatter throughout the Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotopic data, suggesting that this sample is not in isotopic equilibrium. This sample was possibly inherited from high-temperature processes, such as incomplete magmas mixing from a similar, but distinct, source. We conducted in situ U-Th-Pb isotope analyses of Ca-phosphate minerals for NWA 11043 and found an unreliable crystallization age of 59.2 ± 138.4 Ma: phosphates are likely recording the period of shock metamorphism related to the ejection event. Consistent crystallization ages and magmatic histories support previous work that suggest there is a common magmatic system on Mars that is responsible for the formation of enriched shergottites.

Abstract:Eclogites in the Donghai area of the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt in eastern China contain both disseminated rutile and rutile deposits. The rutile occurs as small inclusions in garnet, omphacite, phengite, and quartz, as larger euhedral to subhedral grains in equilibrium with garnet, omphacite, phengite, and kyanite, and as discrete veinlets, aggregates, and megacrysts in cracks and along grain boundaries. To investigate the processes of rutile mineralization and its relationship to the evolution of the Sulu UHP metamorphic belt,we sampled the exposed Maobei deposit at Donghai and drill core between 100 and 2000 to in the nearby Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project (CCSD) main hole to carry out a detailed infrared microthermometric fluid inclusion study. Three types of fluid inclusions were identified: aqueous (Type I), CO2-H2O (Type II), and CH4 (Type III). Type I and Type II inclusions are the most common. Primary and pseudosecondary Type I inclusions, which were trapped during recrystallization of the eclogite or early amphibolite facies; retrograde metamorphism, have a narrow range of homogenization temperatures but a wide range of salinities. In contrast, secondary Type I inclusions, which formed entirely during retrograde amphibolite-facies metamorphism associated with exhumation of the UHP rocks, have higher and more varied homogenization temperatures but medium to low salinities. Type II inclusions formed contemporaneously with the Type I variety and are characterized by having small amounts of CO2 and N-2 in addition to H2O. In addition, some of the rutile grains contain sparse inclusions composed of CH2 (Type III). Our results combined with those of previous studies, suggest a great diversity of fluid composition in the peak metamorphic to early retrograde stages, implying very limited fluid-rock interaction during synto post-peak high-pressure (HP) and UHP metamorphism. This study shows that infrared microthermometric investigation of fluid inclusions can provide information not only on the composition of titanium ore-forming fluids but also on the relationship between mineralization and the evolution of UHP metamorphic belt.

Abstract:Two types of melt pockets, closed melt pocket (CMP) and open melt pocket (OMP), are recognized from the peridotite xenoliths entrained in the Cenozoic kamafugites in western Qinling (sic), Central China. The Haoti (sic) CMPs have a mineral assemblage of olivine+ clinopyroxene+amphibole+K-feldspar, whereas the Baiguan (sic) CMPs are composed of olivine+clinopyroxene+ilmenite+carbonate. The components of the OMPs are more complicated. In the Haoti OMPs, there are olivine, clinopyroxene, glass, low modal abundances of amphibole, K-feldspar (Kfs), ilmenite, sulfide, chlorite, perovskite, chromite and phlogopite. The Baiguan OMPs contain olivine, clinopyroxene, glass, chlorite and chromite. Compositionally, olivines in the CMPs and OMPs are both apparently depleted in Ni, and those in the OMPs are also depleted in Fe and Mg, and enriched in Ca compared to the primary ones. Clinopyroxenes display large and systematical compositional variations between the CMPs and OMPs, particularly in Al, Cr, Na, Ca and Ti. Glasses are generally depleted in Si compared to the worldwide glasses in melt pockets, although they still have large variations. Amphiboles and K-feldspars have relatively restricted compositional variations. The petrographical observations and mineral chemistry suggest that the Haoti and Baiguan CMPs were generated by the in-situ decompression melting of orthopyroxenes, olivines and clinopyroxenes, and by the addition of minor external K-rich and Ca-rich melt/fluids. The OMPs formed during the latest metasomatic event in the lithospheric mantle beneath the western Qinling.
Complex Origins of Silicate Veinlets in HED Meteorites: A Case Study of NorthwestAfrica 1109

Abstract:We report on the petrography and mineralogy of three types of silicate veinlets in the brecciated eucrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 1109. These include Fe‐rich olivine, Mg‐rich olivine, and pyroxene veinlets. The Fe‐rich olivine veinlets mainly infill fractures in pyroxene and also occur along grain boundaries between pyroxene and plagioclase crystals, in both nonequilibrated and equilibrated lithic clasts. The host pyroxene of Fe‐rich olivine veinlets shows large chemical variations between and within grains. The Fe‐rich olivine veinlets also contain fine‐grained Fe3+‐bearing chromite, highly calcic plagioclase, merrillite, apatite, and troilite. Based on texture and mineral chemistry, we argue that the formation of Fe‐rich olivine was related to fluid deposition at relatively high temperatures. However, the source of Fe‐rich olivine in the veinlets remains unclear. Magnesium‐rich olivine veinlets were found in three diogenitic lithic clasts. In one of these, the Mg‐rich olivine veinlets only occur in one of the fine‐grained interstitial regions and extend into fractures within surrounding coarse‐grained orthopyroxene. Based on the texture of the interstitial materials, we suggest that the Mg‐rich olivine veinlets formed by shock‐induced localized melting and recrystallization. Pyroxene veinlets were only observed in one clast where they infill fractures within large plagioclase grains and are associated with fine‐grained pyroxene surrounding coarse‐grained pyroxene. The large chemical variations in pyroxene and the fracture‐filling texture indicate that the pyroxene veinlets might also have formed by shock‐induced localized melting and rapid crystallization. Our study demonstrates that silicate veinlets formed by a range of different surface processes on the surface of Vesta.
