Guest Editorial: AC/DC transmission and distribution technology supporting the new-type power system

Abstract:With the rapid development of large-scale new energy and the increasingly extensive application of energy storage, the problems of high loss of AC and DC energy conversion and poor control flexibility in traditional transmission and distribution systems has become increasingly prominent. This has brought great challenges to the design, operation, control and protection of traditional transmission, and distribution systems. In order to support the construction of the new-type power system, it is urgent to make technological breakthroughs in materials, devices, equipment, systems and other aspects to ensure the safe and stable operation of transmission, and distribution systems. This Special Issue aims to promote academic exchanges and theoretical research progress in the fields related to AC and DC power transmission and distribution technology, combined with the excellent papers selected by the 18th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission. The call for the Special Issue has three sections, that is, Materials, devices and equipment supporting the construction of new-type power system; Design, control and protection of AC / DC transmission and distribution system; DC grid. In this Special Issue, the Guest Editors have acknowledged a total of 14 papers which have all been sent to peer-review. Out of these 14 papers, 8 have been accepted. These 8 papers were of good quality and have contributed to the success of the Special Issue. The accepted papers are further divided into three categories, that is, Materials, devices and equipment supporting the construction of new-type power system; Design, control and protection of AC/DC transmission and distribution system; DC grid. Materials, devices and equipment supporting the construction of new-type power system Xin Liao, et al. propose a quasi-hot standby fault-tolerant control strategy for cascaded H-bridge rectifier. Compared with the traditional strategies, the quasihot standby fault-tolerant control strategy has a faster recovery speed after the malfunction, and its transient recovery process has less impact on the power grid. Luxing Zhao, et al. erect a HVDC test line at an altitude of 4300 m, and carried out AN and corona current tests under different voltages. The research results show that, there is a relatively fixed difference of about 7–8.3 dB between the equivalent A-weight sound level and the 8 kHz sound pressure level at altitude 4300 m. Design, control and protection of AC/DC transmission and distribution system Zixi Fang, et al. utilize a parallel-connected small-capacity auxiliary converter to suppress the harmonic voltages and provide black-start energy for the OWFs. In addition, the submodule branches (SMBs) of the auxiliary converter can be used as part of the HVDC chopper. On this basis, a coordinated grid fault ride-through (FRT) strategy is proposed in this paper. Jihong Zhang, et al. propose a joint control strategy of adaptive virtual composite impedance and adaptive droop coefficient adjustment algorithm. The circulation characteristics and generation mechanism of multi-parallel inverters are analysed by modelling. Kehan Xu, et al. propose a frequency selection method for urban low-frequency multi-terminal interconnected systems (ULFMIS). The proposed method is validated in a typical four-terminal ULFMIS. The results demonstrate that the suggested method is suitable for calculating the ULTF taking account of the influence of the number of parallel lines on economic cost. Junpeng Deng, et al. introduce and compare novel offshore wind farm (OWP) HVDC transmission schemes from the converter level to the system level. And key technologies for OWF HVDC operation are also introduced. DC grid Zhizheng Gan, et al. propose a four-terminal DC circuit breaker based on commutating path multiplexing. The equivalent prototype of the circuit breaker test results shows that under 10-kV voltage level, the four-terminal circuit breaker topology can achieve breaking of 11 kA in 2.8 ms by thenatural commutation method. Fei Liu, et al. propose an LLC type DC-DC converter based on IGCT and magnetically integrated transformer, which can significantly increase the capacity, efficiency and power density of DC-DC converter. The parametric design of a 50MW PV system is presented, and the simulation is carried out to verify the feasibility and advantages of the system. With the development of society and the increasing demand for electricity, building an efficient and reliable power system has become particularly important. The AC/DC transmission and distribution system, as a key component of the new-type power system, plays a crucial role. Therefore, we should increase the research and development of AC/DC transmission and distribution systems, promote the construction and development of new power systems, promote economic development and achieve sustainable energy utilization. Rong Zeng, professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Vice President of Tsinghua University. He has long been engaged in the fundamental and key technologies research in the field of the advanced power transmission technology, and has made some achievements in such fields as key equipment and power electronic devices for DC power transmission and distribution systems, the optoelectronic integrated electric-field sensor for intensive transient EMF measurement, the lightning physics, lightning protection and grounding on power system, electromagnetic transient simulation, etc. And now, he is a delegate member of CIGRE SC C3, senior member of IEEE, IET Fellow, member of Electromagnetic Interference Protection Committee of China Power Electric Society and China Lightning Protection Technology Committee. He has published more than 300 papers, obtained more than 100 patents, and taken part in 6 items of national standards. Jinliang He, professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. Currently, he is a Cheung-Kong Scholar Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education of China in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University and leads the university's High Voltage and Insulation Technology Research Institute. His research interests include advanced power transmission technology, smart insulaiton materials and equipment, and intelligent sensing technology. He is a member of CIGRE C4 committee, and was a memebr of IEEE PES Fellow Evaluation Committee. He is Fellows of IEEE, IET, CSEE, and HPEM. Zhanqing Yu received a Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2008. Currently, he is Associate Professor and Deputy Dean of Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University. His research interests include advanced power transmission technology, electromagnetic transient and its protection, high electric field sensing, dc circuit breaker, power semiconductor devices. He was awarded the Excellent Young Scholars of NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) in 2019. His research project “Large Capacity DC Breaking Technology” won 2021 E&T Future power and energy Innovation Award. He has won First Prize of Technological Invention by Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), 2021. He has published more than 200 papers, obtained more than 90 patents, and taken part in 5 items of technology standards. Lu Qu, assistant researcher at Tsinghua University. His research interests include DC distribution network and DC breaking technology. He undertakes one China Postdoctoral Science Fund. He published 25 papers included in SCI/EI, authorized 5 invention patents and applied for 41 invention patents. He participated in the preparation of 3 Chinese monographs and 1 English monograph. He also participated in drafting one national standard, two industrial standards and three group standards.
