Abstract:The modern power system is becoming more complicated due to the ever increasing penetration of power electronics, which is referred to as a power-electronics-dominated system (PEDS). In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace, where the challenges should be properly tackled. After the brief introduction of grid-connected converters, this article explores stability challenges of PEDSs, especially on the low inertia issue and multi timescale characteristics, as well as the dynamics when connected to weak grids. The low inertia issue is considered as one of great challenges that power electronics introduce to the conventional power grid. Accordingly, the stability issues of PEDSs are discussed. The exploration reveals that the multitimescale coupling among various control loops and the mutual effects of multiple converters demand much more attention than ever before. The coordinated control of converters for the global stability of PEDSs is also summarized, part of which offers the possibility to solve the inertia problem. This article serves as an inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. In order to provide a more intuitive impression of the inertia problem in PEDSs, a case study is exemplified to highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:The modern power system features high penetration of power converters due to the development of renewables, HVDC, etc. Currently, the controller design and parameter tuning of power converters heavily rely on rich engineering experience and extrapolation from a single converter system, which may lead to inferior performance or even instabilities under variable grid conditions. In this paper, we propose an H_∞-control design framework to provide a systematic way for the robust and optimal control design of power converters. We discuss how to choose weighting functions to achieve anticipated and robust performance with regards to multiple control objectives. Further, we show that by a proper choice of the weighting functions, the converter can be conveniently specified as grid-forming or grid-following in terms of small-signal dynamics. Moreover, this paper first proposes a decentralized stability criterion based on the small gain theorem, which enables us to guarantee the global small-signal stability of a multi-converter system through local control design of the power converters. We provide high-fidelity nonlinear simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulations to illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:Traditional electricity grids use large-capacity synchronous generators as power generation devices, which have the characteristics of large volume and high robustness. In recent years, the rapid development of renewable energy in alignment with the national strategy of Carbon Neutrality in China by 2060 has brought new opportunities and challenges to traditional power grids. Power electronics converters are the key to renewable energy integration to gradually replace traditional synchronous generators, leading to reduced inertia and more challenges. While being more flexible, it makes the stability of the grid worse. In view of this, various advanced control strategies have been developed in the literature. The control of grid-connected converters has been broadly divided into two groups, grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM). In this paper, the characteristics of the GFM control are benchmarked through simulations, mainly the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control and the virtual oscillator control (VOC). The benchmarking indicates that the VSG control strategies with virtual inertia have less fluctuation in response to various disturbances and the VOC performs better in terms of dynamics.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel control strategy based on network for power electronics system. The definition of networked control is presented in control through network and control of network. According to the actual situation of power electronics, network selection and communication mechanism are presented. By means of the communication cell, standardized data stream of control loop and characteristics of network- induced delay through communication, some concepts of control through network is described. After the rough estimation of network-induced delay of all kinds of network during the transmission process for data of power electronics, the strategies of networked control for power electronic systems are presented by different MAC and topologies, which embody the essence of control of network.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:Electric power networks are experiencing significant changes as a result of widespread adoption of power electronics (PE)-based apparatuses. Power electronics converters are substantially different from synchronous machines which have been used during decades. The different nature of power electronics converters includes some limitations (like very limited overload capability and available inertia) and also some important advantages (like total controllability) which require to completely revise and restructure the way we address the design and analysis of power systems. PE-based converters are present at the generation, transmission, and distribution levels. In the field of power transmission and distribution, HVDC and FACTS technologies have helped to expand network power transfer capability and to increase operation flexibilities over the past 30 plus years. In recent years, more creative (or impactful) innovations in power electronics based T&D apparatus have been emerging. Examples are VSC based HVDC links, PE-based fault current limiters, and solid state transformers. In parallel, various novel PE-application concepts have been proposed and some have found commercial applications. They include, for example, smart wires, electric springs, ground fault neutralizers, soft-open switches, PE-assisted transformers, grid edge PE devices and PE-enabled active protection schemes. As the future power systems will be increasingly populated by power electronics, there is also a need to develop new knowledge on how to understand, analyze and engineer modern and future power systems.

Abstract:A key issue for power electronic converters is the ability to tackle periodic signals in electrical power processing to precisely and flexibly convert and regulate electrical power. This book provides complete analysis and synthesis methods for periodic control systems. It covers the control, compensation, and filtering of periodic signals in power electronic power processing and proposes a unified framework for housing periodic control schemes for power converters, providing a general proportional-integral-derivative control solution to periodic signal compensation in extensive engineering applications - a perfect periodic control solution for power electronic conversion. It provides number of demonstrative practical examples of the application of periodic control to: standalone constant-voltage-constant-frequency (CVCF) singlephase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) inverters; standalone CVCF singlephase High Frequency Link (HFL) inverters; standalone CVCF three-phase PWM inverters; grid-connected single-phase inverters; grid-connected singlephase "Cycloconverter" type HFL rectifiers; grid-connected three-phase PWM inverters; programmable AC power sources; shunt active power filters; and UPS systems. Periodic Control of Power Electronic Converters is of key importance for researchers and engineers in the field of power electronic converter systems and their applications, for control specialists exploring new applications of control theory in power electronics, and for advanced university students in these fields.
On Power Control of Grid-Forming Converters: Modeling, Controllability, and Full-State Feedback Design

Abstract:The popular single-input single-output control structures and classic design methods (e.g., root locus analysis) for the power control of grid-forming converters have limitations in applying to different line characteristics and providing favorable performance. This paper studies the grid-forming converter power loops from the perspective of multi-input multi-output systems. First, the error dynamics associated with power control loops (error-based state-space model) are derived while taking into account the natural dynamical coupling terms of the power converter models. Thereafter, the controllability Gramian of the grid-forming converter power loops is studied. Last, a full-state feedback control design using only the local measurements is applied. By this way, the eigenvalues of the system can be arbitrarily placed in the timescale of power loops based on predefined time-domain specifications. A step-by-step construction and design procedure of the power control of grid-forming converters is also given. The analysis and proposed method are verified by experimental results.

Abstract:With the rapid development of a new generation of power systems and high power traction, megawatt power electronics receives increasingly more global attention for enhanced capability and reliability. Megawatt power electronics apparatuses and systems are composed of control units, high-power semiconductor devices, passive elements, and generalized connecting parts, in which effective transformation and transmission of electric power are achieved via the control of information flow over energy flow. When considering multiple time-scales, the megawatt power electronics systems turn into a combination of linearity and nonlinearity, and also the one of discrete and continuous quantities, which results in complicated transient phenomena. In addition, scalability and modularity become growing trends for the megawatt power converters, which are preferred by the manufacturers.

Abstract:The rapid growth of renewable energy sources (RESs) leads to an increasingly higher penetration of power converters in the grid. However, unlike conventional synchronous generators (SGs), power converters are difficult to provide voltage or frequency support. Considering this, the grid-forming (GFM) control has been explored to form a stable voltage reference with a fixed frequency. Although certain regulations and requirements of the GFM control have been released, a unified definition is still missing. In this paper, the characteristics of the GFM are extended seen from the perspective of AC power supply in order to assist the unification of GFM technologies. Case studies have been provided to demonstrate the extended characteristics.

Abstract:The increasing penetration of power‐electronics interfaced resources brings new challenges regarding the small‐signal stability of power systems. To address this issue, grid‐forming (GFM) controlled converters have emerged as an alternative to their conventional grid‐following counterparts. This paper investigates the mechanisms behind converters driven stability and quantifies the stabilizing effect of GFM controls. The linearized state‐space model of different combinations of control strategies is analysed in a multi‐infeed system considering various operating points. Through a parametric sensitivity study and an examination of the participation factors of key eigenvalues of the linearized models, it is confirmed that GFM controls contribute to system stabilization. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that this stabilizing effect varies significantly depending on the specific GFM control implemented: whether a current control loop is used or not notably impacts stability.

Abstract:The power electronic converters can interact with other grid components and lead to unstable oscillation in a wide frequency range, for instance, the subsynchronous and high-frequency oscillations. In the past decade, several subsynchronous control interaction (SSCI) events have been reported around the world, including those in Xcel Energy, ERCOT, Guyuan, and Hami wind power systems in the US and China. This chapter first provides a brief overview of the occurrence mechanisms and features of the real-world SSCI events. Then, it discusses the impedance-based analysis and control of SSCI in actual wind power systems.

Abstract:In modern power systems the increasing penetration of renewables and power electronics, particularly converter-based wind and solar power generation, is transforming system dynamics and bringing new stability concerns. One major issue that is currently attracting considerable attention is the wide range of power oscillations associated with renewable power generators (RPGs). The unique characteristics of RPGs, especially their low inertia, powerelectronic interface and wide-band response, not only impact the classical electromechanical and torsional oscillations of the power system (that were previously dominated by synchronous machines), but they also cause emerging oscillatory stability problems, such as sub/super-synchronous interactions, medium/ high-frequency oscillations and harmonic instability. This Special Issue covers the analysis, modelling, monitoring and control of power oscillations associated with renewable power generations. The theme of the Special Issue is broadly divided into: Section 1 subsynchronous interaction: analysis & mitigation, Section 2 monitoring of subsynchronous oscillation, Section 3 modelling and stability of converter-interfaced RPGs, Section 4 low-frequency oscillations associated with RPGs, Section 5 virtual inertia techniques to support low-inertia RPGs and Section 6 power quality and ferroresonance issues in distributed RPGs. A brief discussion of the authors' contributions is given in this Editorial.

Abstract:We are very much thankful to the IET Power Electronics editorial board for instructing this Special Issue on “Converters and Semiconductor Circuit Breakers for HVDC and DC grids” and we are glad to be contributing as editors. We are grateful to editors Prof Volker Pickert and Dr Mohamed Dahidah for their support, to all the reviewers, and to the IET editorial office, who helped build this Special Issue into its final shape. In the final version for publishing, 16 papers have been selected for this journal, consisting of: six papers related to MMC converters, four papers dealing with DC Circuit breakers, four papers related to DC/DC converters and two papers on the topic of DC grid or multiterminal HVDC. It is good to see that industry participates in five of the selected papers while one paper has lead authors from industry. Two major manufactures (ALSTOM and SIEMENS) have contributed in the articles on the DC CB topic, and also two transmission system operators, RTE France and SSE Scotland are associated with papers dealing with DC CB and high power DC/DC converters.
