Abstract:We compared the influences of Al2O3 and SiO2 on a traditional V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 for the simultaneous removal of NOx and chlorobenzene (CB). The Al2O3 doping catalyst considerably broadens the active temperature window with higher NOx reduction and CB oxidation efficiencies than the SiO2 doping one and the V2O5-MoO3/TiO2. Furthermore, its resistance to SO2 was preserved and the quantities of polychlorinated byproducts also decreased. The increase in activity at low temperatures could be due to the promotion of vanadia reducibility via interactions between V2O5 and Al2O3. Moreover, the high temperature activity could be due to the additional surface acidities provided by Al2O3, in which the Lewis acid sites played the predominant role in both NH3 adsorptions and CB de-chlorination compared to the Brønsted acid sites. Finally, we proposed that Al2O3 is an effective addition for vanadia-based catalyst in NOx and CB simultaneous removal from stationary sources.

Abstract:Regulating vanadia-based oxides has been widely utilized for fabricating effective difunctional catalysts for the simultaneous elimination of NOx and chlorobenzene (CB). However, the notorious accumulation of polychlorinated species and excessively strong NH3 adsorption on the catalysts lead to the deterioration of multipollutant control (MPC) activity. Herein, protonated sulfate (-HSO4) supported on vanadium-titanium catalysts via a preoccupied anchoring strategy are designed to prevent polychlorinated species and alleviate NH3 adsorption for the multipollutant control. The obtained catalysts with -HSO4 modification achieve an excellent NOx and CB conversion with turnover frequency values of similar to 3.63 and 17.7 times higher than those of the pristine, respectively. The protonated sulfate promotes the formation of polymeric vanadyl with a higher chemical state and d-band center of V. The modulated catalysts not only substantially alleviate the competitive adsorption of multipollutant via the "V 3d-O 2p-S 3p" network, but also distinctly strengthen the Br & oslash;nsted acid sites. Besides, the introduced proton donor of the -HSO4 connecting polymeric structure could markedly reduce the reaction barrier of breaking the C-Cl bond. This work paves an advanced way for low-loading vanadium SCR catalysts to achieve highly efficient NOx and CB oxidation at a low temperature.
Promoting Effect of FeOx Addition on the Mechanochemically Prepared Vanadium-Based Catalyst for Real PCDD/Fs Removal and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a “bottleneck” for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.

Abstract:Vanadium-based catalysts have been extensively applied for the synergistic control of NOx and chlorinated organics. However, how the vanadia species affect the reaction activity and products distribution, and what are the dominant reaction sites of these vanadia species are still unknown. Herein, we investigated the reaction characteristics of monomeric and polymeric vanadate domains for the catalytically synergistic elimination of NOx and chlorobenzene (CB). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental investigations have been combined to clarify the effects of different vanadyl species on the synergistic reaction. It was noted that the main adsorption site of CB on the monomeric domain was V-OH bond, and that on the polymeric one was V═O bond. The monomeric vanadyl was favorable for converting the Lewis V═O into Brønsted V-OH, which provided sufficient H protons for HCl formation, whereas the polymeric species could effectively retain the V4+/V5+ redox cycle, and yielded superior activity in CB catalytic oxidation (CBCO) reaction. However, the abundant oxygen vacancies and the inclined accumulation of Cl by forming the V-Cl bands led to significant polychlorinated byproducts on the polymeric vanadyl catalysts. Our work gives the first insight into different vanadate domain effects on the synergistic reaction, and is expected to provide theoretical basis for efficient design of the vanadium-based catalysts toward multipollutants elimination.

Abstract:The conventional V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst suffers severely from arsenic poisoning, leading to a significant loss of catalytic activity. The doping of Al or Mo plays an important role in promoting the arsenic resistance on NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR), but their promotion mechanism remains in debate and has yet to be explored in multipollutant control (MPC) of NOx and chlorinated organics. Herein, our experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that arsenic species preferentially adsorb on both Al and Mo to form arsenate, thereby avoiding bonding to the catalytically active V sites. More importantly, Al doping partially converted the polymeric vanadyl species into monomeric ones, thereby inhibiting the near-surface and bulk lattice oxygen mobility of the V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst, while Mo doping resulted in vanadyl polymerization with an enriched V5+ chemical state and exhibited superior MPC activity and COx selectivity. Our work shows that antipoisoning catalysts can be designed with the combination of site protection and occurrence state modification of the active species.

Abstract:Modulating vanadia-based metal oxides is one of the effective methods for designing difunctional catalysts for simultaneous control of NOx and chlorobenzene (CB) from the emissions of industrial sources. Excessive NH3 adsorption and polychlorinated species accumulation on the surface are the primary issues poisoning catalysts and reducing their lifetime. Herein, Sb is selected as an NH3 adsorption alleviator and polychlorinated species preventor dopant on V2O5-WO3/TiO2. The catalyst exhibits an excellent performance for total NOx and 90% CB conversions at 300-400 °C under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60,000 mL g-1 h-1. The HCl and N2 selectivities are maintained at 90 and 98%, respectively. The anti-poisoning ability could be attributed to the generated V-O-Sb chains on the surface: the band gap of vanadium is narrowed and the electron capability is strengthened. The above variation weakens the Lewis acid sites and blocks the electrophilic chlorination reactions of the catalyst surface (formation of polychlorinated species). In addition, oxygen vacancies on Sb-O-Ti also increase: the ring opening of benzoates is accelerated and NH3 adsorption energy is weakened. The above variation lowers the energy barriers of C-Cl cleavage even under NH3 pre-adsorption models and enhances NOx reduction thermodynamically and kinetically.

Abstract:Vanadium-based catalysts have been widely used in the simultaneous removal of NOx and Hg0. However, how vanadium species affect the reactivity of Hg0 oxidation and coverage-dependent behaviors of vanadium species are still unknown. Herein, we synthesized a series of V2O5/TiO2 catalysts with different V loadings and investigated the reaction characteristics of vanadium species (i.e., sub-monolayer, monolayer, and crystalline) for the catalytically simultaneous abatement of NOx and Hg0. At low V loading, the ratio of Oads/Olatt decreased gradually due to the VOx species occupying the defect sites of TiO2. The reaction rate of Hg0 oxidation is proportional to the square of the VOx density up to monolayer coverage. A maximum amount of V5+ is achieved at monolayer coverage and the TOF shows a volcanic trend with the increase of V loading. This study is an in-depth attempt to explore the effects of different vanadium species on the simultaneous removal of NOx and Hg0, and it is expected to provide theoretical guidance for the effective design of state-of-the-art vanadium-based catalysts for multipollutant control.

Abstract:NO and chlorobenzene (CB) coexist in the flue gas of industrial furnaces from waste incineration and iron sin tering. We design the strategy to remove them simultaneously via SCR and catalytic combustion together (multipollutant control, MPC). The V5Mo5Ti exhibits excellent activity with 100 % NO conversions in 200-400 degrees C and 95 % CB conversions above 300 degrees C. 2,3-dichloromaleic anhydride (DCMA) and acetate are the primary intermediates during the CB oxidation, while the sum of 17 kinds of PCDD/Fs on the V5Mo5Ti is 0.0115 ng.ITEQ.Nm(-3). Partial DCMA is not deeply oxidized into CO2, reducing the COx selectivity below 350 degrees C. The final products of the accumulated species above 800 degrees C desorption are CCl4 and C2Cl4, generated from the hydrogenation of intermediates. The Cl desorption mainly occurs in two zones: HCl in 200-500 degrees C from CB oxidation and CCl4 and C2Cl4 above 800 degrees C from surface hydrocarbon decomposition.

Abstract:The V2O5/TiO2 catalyst is the most concerned NH3-SCR catalytic system for simultaneous removal of NO x and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs). There is an urgent need to develop a vanadia-based catalyst with low vanadium loading and excellent low-temperature catalytic performance. In this work, the Pr and W co-doped vanadia-based catalysts were prepared by a simple impregnation method. After the doping of Pr and W, the vanadia-based catalyst exhibited the excellent catalytic activity for NO x reduction and chlorobenzene (CB) oxidation. The more abundant polymeric vanadyl species and crystalline V2O5 were observed on the PrV5W/Ti catalyst, which are contributing to NH3-SCR and CB oxidation activity. The redox capability and the amount of surface-active adsorbed oxygen of vanadia-based catalyst were improved markedly, thus promoting NH3-SCR and CB oxidation reaction on PrV5W/Ti. This catalyst is promising to be used in the muti-pollutant control reaction of NO x and VOCs.

Abstract:Monometallic (V/TiO2 and Mo/TiO2) and bimetallic (V-Mo/TiO2) catalysts were prepared for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 at low temperatures (100-300 degrees C). The effect of MoOx on the dispersion of vanadia with different V2O5 loadings was investigated on the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N-2 adsorption-desorption, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). As the molybdenum precursor, NH4Mo7O24 increased the solution acidity and promoted polymerization of VOx in liquid phase. At a low vanadia loading, polymerization of VOx, the adsorption rate of NH3 and transformation of active intermediate species -NH2 were enhanced by adding MoOx, while at a high vanadia loading, the steric hindrance became dominant leading to the formation of crystalline V2O5 and MoO3 and caused decline in SCR activity.

Abstract:NOx is the main pollutant in the air, which causes many harmful effects on society. The V2O5/TiO2 catalysts are very important to reduce the NOx from the heat engine plants and vehicle exhausts. However, various reasons will affect the performance of the catalysts. In this paper, the polymerization state of surface VOx of supported V2O5/TiO2 catalysts was controlled by changing the pH value of the impregnation precursor solutions, and the redox and acidity properties of the catalysts can be adjusted consequently. The Raman spectroscopy, V-51 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), H-2-temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), NH3-temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) and (NH3)-N-15-NO-O-2-temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) were mainly used for the characterization and properties tests of the samples. Although all catalysts in this work had similar surface morphology and the same vanadium loading, the catalyst oxidability decreased while acidity increased with the increasing of VOx polymerization, which causes the NO conversion increases with the increasing of VOx polymerization below 300 degrees C in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) de-NOx reaction. This work will promote the advance in catalysis and anti-pollution fields for human and nature.

Abstract:The co-benefit of Hg0 or chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) oxidation can be achieved by using vanadium-based catalysts in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit. However, there is no research on the synergistic catalytic elimination of Hg0 and chlorobenzene (CB) in vanadium-based catalysts. Herein, the reaction mechanism of catalytic elimination of Hg0 and CB on vanadium-based catalysts was systematically analyzed and discussed for the first time. It is surprisingly observed that there is a synergistic effect between chlorobenzene catalytic oxidation (CBCO) and Hg0 oxidation. That is, CB could enhance Hg0 oxidation by providing active chlorine species, while the presence of Hg0 could also promote CBCO and reduce the formation of polychlorinated byproducts due to the consumption of chlorine species in the Hg0 oxidation reaction according to Le Chatelier’s principle. This synergistic effect was conducive to maintaining the physical structure and electronic properties of the catalyst and weakening the deposition of elements chlorine and mercury on the catalyst surface, promoting the re-exposure of active centers. This work provides unique insights for synergistic catalytic elimination of Hg0 and CB, and is expected to guide the prospective application on vanadium-based catalysts for multipollutant control.
The Synergistic Catalysis of Chloroaromatic Organics and NOx over Monolithic Vanadium-Based Catalysts at Low Temperature

Abstract:In this study, four monolithic, vanadium-based catalysts in granular (Vox/TiO2), honeycomb-type (Vox-Wox/TiO2 and Vox-MoOx/TiO2), and corrugated forms (Vox-Wox/TiO2) were investigated by multiple characterization methods (BET, XRF, XPS, XRD, H2-TPR, and NH3-TPD). Their catalytic performances were evaluated by the oxidation-reduction performance of ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) and NO/NH3. The modification of Wox and MoOx could promote catalytic activity by accelerating the transformation of V5+/V4+ and enriching the strong acid sites. The introduction of NO/NH3 significantly impaired the o-DCB oxidation, ascribed to the competitive adsorption of reactants on acid sites. The performance of Vox/TiO2 and Vox-MoOx/TiO2 catalysts indicated that strong acidity could enhance catalytic abilities over o-DCB and Nox. Nevertheless, the CE (conversion efficiency) of o-DCB was more related to a large BET surface area and a high amount of V5+ species, while the CE of Nox was more associated with redox ability and Vox surface density. The V4+/V5+ and OS-A/OS-L ratio increased prominently after the oxidation of o-DCB, indicating that it was the reoxidation of V4+ species, rather than the supplement of oxygen, that limited the reaction rate. This work revealed catalytic activity was positively affiliated with the surface area, amount of V5+ species, transformation rate of V4+/V5+, redox ability, and abundance of strong acid sites. Additionally, the results could guide the selectivity and improvement of industrial low-temperature catalysts for synergistic elimination of chloroaromatic organics and Nox.

Abstract:Bronsted acid sites and reducibility are crucial for a vandaia catalyst in selective catalytic reduction of NO reaction. Alkali oxides are poisonous to vanadia catalyst. Theoretical chemistry computations and experiments were performed to study the reaction of alkali oxides with the catalyst and the afterward influence left on the catalyst. Both NH3 adsorption and neutralization by alkali oxides proceed on Bronsted acid sites. Theoretical computation with density functional theory shows that neutralization by alkali oxide is more exothermic than NH3 adsorption. The easy consumption of Bronsted acid sites by alkali oxides results in the transformation of surface nature and the decrease of acidity, which is experimentally testified by the NH3 sorption results. The replacement of hydrogen ion by the alkali ion after neutralization will cause the reduction of vanadium atom, as indicated by computed Mulliken charges. This has led to the lower reducibility of the catalyst, which is verified by the theoretical hydrogenation process and experimental hydrogen reduction profile.

Abstract:The synergetic abatement of multi-pollutants is one of the development trends of flue gas pollution control technology, which is still in the initial stage and facing many challenges. We developed a V2O5/TiO2 granular catalyst and established the kinetic model for the simultaneous removal of NO and chlorobenzene (i.e., an important precursor of dioxins). The granular catalyst synthesized using vanadyl acetylacetonate precursor showed good synergistic catalytic performance and stability. Although the SCR reaction of NO and the oxidation reaction of chlorobenzene mutually inhibited, the reaction order of each reaction was not considerably affected, and the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics was still followed. The performance prediction of this work is of much value to the understanding and reasonable design of a catalytic system for multi-pollutants (i.e., NO and dioxins) emission control.
Effects of different introduction methods of Ce4+ and Zr4+ on denitration performance and anti-K poisoning performance of V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to explore the effects of the introduction methods of Ce4+ and Zr4+ on the physicochemical properties, activity, and K tolerance of V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO x by NH3. Four different methods, namely pre-impregnation, post-impregnation, co-impregnation, and co-precipitation, were used to synthesize a series of V2O5-WO3-TiO2-CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, NH3-TPD, XPS, and H2-TPR techniques. Moreover, the activity and anti-K poisoning performance were tested by an NH3-SCR model reaction. The results show that the introduction of Ce4+ and Zr4+ can improve the catalytic performance of V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst, but the impregnation method cannot enhance the anti-K poisoning performance. Ce4+ and Zr4+ introduced by co-precipitation method can effectively improve the tolerance of K, which is mainly due to the incorporation of Ce4+ and Zr4+ into TiO2 lattice to form a uniform TiO2-CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution, resulting in the optimal surface acidity and redox performance, and reducing the decreases caused by K-poisoning. Furthermore, based on the best introduction method, we further optimized the molar ratio of Ce4+/Zr4+. It is found that the catalyst exhibits the best anti-K poisoning performance when the molar ratio of Ce4+/Zr4+ is 2:1.
