Sports as Ritual: Ethnic Memory in Sports Practice

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of sports as ritual was analyzed from the anthropological perspective of what ritual is.Sword-climbing of the Lisu people is a classical sport regarded as a ritual.Before the 20th century, there was no written record of the Lisu people, whose history was passed on through rituals, oral accounts or myths.Sword-climbing shows a great narrative system of the history, religious beliefs, values, oral accounts and skills of the Lisu people.It is a social practice to demonstrate the memory of an ethnic group through the body, a platform for the ethnic group to remember and learn from the past.It is inherited by the ethnic group and accepted as part of their values.
