Abstract:Developing students' critical thinking skills in writing is essential in different educational contexts. However, the analysis of the argument structure in non-English-major undergraduate students' writing remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to analyze the structure of argumentative English papers written by Chinese university students, based on the adapted Toulmin model of argument structure constituting six elements (claim, data, counterargument claim, counterargument data, rebuttal claim, and rebuttal data). The participants in this study were a class of 47 sophomores enrolled in the course "Modern Education Technology" at Zhejiang University, China. They were required to identify the components of the argument structure in a pre-assigned short text with two opposing views, and to write an argumentative essay. Content analysis was used to assess the students' CT and argument structures. In both tasks, the results found that the majority of the students could identify author's claim with at least a piece of data. They also stated their own claims and provided at least one piece of data to back these up. However, a majority failed to identify the author's counter argument and even though many stated the counter argument claims in their essays, most were unjustified. The majority did not state a conclusion in both tasks. This study may be beneficial in understanding non-English major-undergraduate students' critical thinking skills in English writing and the results suggest that L2 essay writing instructors should use active and explicit methods such as computer-assisted argument mapping tools like RationaleTM to help learners master the argument structure. Some pedagogic guidelines are listed for the implementation of the RationaleTM software in the L2 classroom.

Abstract:A research paper is a piece of academic writing that provides analysis, interpretation, and arguments based on in-depth independent research. A good research paper solidifies a researcher’s skill in scholarly writing. This paper describes the process it takes to write a good research paper; it highlights the processes necessary to write various sections of a research paper - Abstracts, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion. Digesting this research paper's content would ensure researchers can document information that would otherwise seep through due to a lack of research writing skills. The aim of this is to ensure that researchers can make original contributions to the scholarly base. An author's career, institution, and nation will be impacted by high-quality publication in indexed journals. Significant rejections could result from poor scientific writing. Therefore, writing a successful scientific publication for a peer-reviewed journal takes considerable time and expertise. A few easy actions and advice are provided to help researchers publish the findings of their work in the right scientific publications with greater expertise. Effective scientific writing frequently adheres to a specific format with important elements. The introduction to a specific issue with relevant background literature and theories to be studied, a list and explanation of the techniques, results, and a discussion that connects the results to the topic's broader information should all be included in a scientific paper's main text. For early researchers aiming to raise the caliber of their submissions for publication, this review piece is essential.

Abstract:Introduction: Writing an abstract means to extract and summarize (AB - absolutely, STR - straightforward, ACT - actual data presentation and interpretation). Thousands of abstracts are submitted to stroke conferences each year. The following suggestions may improve the chances of your work being selected for presentation, and to communicate results in the most efficient and unambiguous way. TITLE AND STRUCTURE: Make the title dynamic and informative, rather than descriptive. Structure the abstract following the IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) principle for your future original paper where background would become Introduction and conclusions would enter Discussion. Select the appropriate category for submission carefully. This determines which experts grade the abstract and the session where your competitors represent their work. If selected appropriately, your abstract is more likely to be graded by peers with similar interests and familiarity with your work or field. Methods should describe the study design and tools of data acquisition shortly, not data. Results: Provide data that answer the research question. Describe most important data with numbers and statistics. Make your point with data, not speculations and opinions. Abbreviations should be avoided and only be used after they have been spelled out or defined. Common mistakes include failure to state the hypothesis, rationale for the study, sample size and conclusions. Highlight the novelty of your work by carefully chosen straightforward wording. Conclusions: Conclusions have to be based on the present study findings. Make sure your abstract is clear, concise and follows all rules. Show your draft to colleagues for critique, and if you are not a native English speaker show it to a person who can improve/correct your text. Remember that accepted abstracts of completed original research should be followed by published original papers - if this is not intended or fails, it may indicate an impaired ability to succeed in scientific writing and an academic career.

Abstract:Publication is the last stage of research. Writing the research article is also probably the shortest, least-expensive, and arguably the most important part of the process because the published article is usually the only lasting record of your research. In addition, readers often assume that the quality of the writing indicates the quality of the research. Clear, concise writing implies clear, concise thinking, which is necessary for good research. However, few authors are taught how to write an article; how to properly document their research and statistical analyses; how to prepare tables, graphs, and images for publication; what ethical issues need to be addressed; how to choose a journal; and how to communicate with the journal throughout the publishing process. In this article, I describe several ways to write a better research article. In addition to how to improve each section of the article—the title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references—I offer advice for improving the writing itself. Using the techniques presented, you should be able to shorten your article substantially, without eliminating needed information, while improving clarity. Nothing guarantees acceptance by a journal, but a well-written article is easier to accept than a poorly written one. Once published, your article will be in the literature—forever—with your name on it. Given that the quality of your publications affects your professional reputation, making sure your publications are the best they can be is one of the greatest investments you can make in your career.

Abstract:Abstract Communicating research findings is an essential step in the research process. Often, peer-reviewed journals are the forum for such communication, yet many researchers are never taught how to write a publishable scientific paper. In this article, we explain the basic structure of a scientific paper and describe the information that should be included in each section. We also identify common pitfalls for each section and recommend strategies to avoid them. Further, we give advice about target journal selection and authorship. In the online resource 1, we provide an example of a high-quality scientific paper, with annotations identifying the elements we describe in this article.

Abstract:Abstract This text is designed to give the reader a helping hand in writing a scientific paper. It provides generic advice on ways that a scientific paper can be improved. The focus is on the following ethical and non-technical issues: (1) when to start writing, and in what language; (2) how to choose a good title; (3) what should be included in the various sections (abstract, introduction, experimental, results, discussion, conclusions, and supporting information (supplementary material); (4) who should be considered as a co-author, and who should be acknowledged for help; (5) which journal should be chosen; and (6) how to respond to reviewers’ comments. Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide scholars with a robust, easy-to-follow structural model for crafting compelling academic publications. Recognizing the diversity of research methodologies and genres, the paper proposes the symmetry of specificity framework as a guide to maintaining coherence, depth and relevance across different sections of an academic paper. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a theoretical framework – "symmetry of specificity" – through an iterative approach inspired by supervision and examination of theses, writing and reviewing research papers and editorial work. The framework builds upon the established IMRAD model and uses the concept of symmetry to explain the structural elements of academic publications. Its unique contribution lies in elucidating the two-dimensional funneling process that takes place within academic writing, and providing a nuanced understanding of how to maintain balance between different sections. Findings The symmetry of specificity framework introduces a novel perspective on academic writing, emphasizing the concept of "symmetry in specificity". It shows how maintaining a balance in detail and focus across different sections of a research paper can significantly enhance its coherence and relevance. By elucidating the interaction between theory and data in research writing, it provides valuable insights into the nuances of crafting a compelling academic paper. Research limitations/implications While the proposed symmetry of specificity framework may not be universally applicable across all types of research, it provides a solid foundation for the development of alternate structures tailored to specific research paradigms. There is ample opportunity for future research to explore adaptations of this model for various types of academic writing, offering a fresh perspective on structuring academic publications and potentially sparking new discussions and innovations in this realm. Practical implications This framework can aid both novice and experienced scholars in structuring their research papers effectively. By offering a conceptual roadmap, it guides the writer through the complex process of academic writing, from crafting the methodology and analysis sections to articulating compelling conclusions. Thus, it serves as a useful tool in enhancing the quality and impact of research communication. Originality/value This paper presents a unique approach to structuring academic publications that goes beyond the conventional IMRAD model. By offering a theory-based structural model, it contributes to an underexplored area in academic writing and opens up new avenues for pedagogy and practice in research communication.

Abstract:Writing is a vital component of a modern career in scientific research. But how to write correctly and effectively is often not included in the training that young astronomers receive from their supervisors and departments. We offer a step-by-step guide to tackle this deficiency, published as a set of two papers. In the first, we addressed how to plan and outline your paper and decide where to publish. In the current second paper, we describe the various sections that constitute a typical research paper in astronomy, sharing best practice for the most efficient use of each of them. We also discuss a selection of issues that often cause trouble to writers, from sentence to paragraph structure, the `writing mechanics' used to develop a manuscript. Our two-part guide is aimed primarily at master's and PhD level students who are presented with the daunting task of writing their first scientific paper, but more senior researchers or writing instructors may well find the ideas presented here useful.

Abstract:Over the years, I have worked in a variety of research groups and learnt from great scientists with different approaches. There is no 10-step plan for success in research, particularly when you are researching the unknown! But there are many paths to leading a rewarding career in scientific research and adopting practices from successful scientists has helped me navigate my own career. Here, I compile some of the advice on doing research that I explicitly or implicitly received during my undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty years and use to this day. This is the same advice I give my own students. Some of these points are fairly obvious; others I wish I had implemented earlier in my own career. Abstract:A group of international researchers and editors summarize how (promptly and easily) an original manuscript can be written using certain tips and tricks. The authors guide novice colleagues with minimal experience using simple hints and straightforward advice in scholarly publishing. The main body of an original article is composed of four parts: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (the IMRaD format). We make recommendations about how to write these sections. We also make suggestions regarding the title, abstract, key words, and references. In addition, we underline the importance of carefully reading and following general recommendations for the conduct, reporting, editing, and publication of scholarly papers. Specific guidelines are reviewed for improving clarity, accuracy, and transparency, from protocol registration and ethical approval to submission issues, inclusive of rehabilitation specificities. A thorough review of the mission and instructions of the journals under consideration is also critical, inclusive of manuscript preparation guidelines such as word limits of main text, limits in number and style of references, tables and figures, format, checklist, and other specific instructions. Finally, each and every sentence should be iteratively revised for grammar, style, and clarity.

Abstract:Many young researchers face extreme difficulties while writing scientific articles, and there is seldom any specific training imparted as a part of under and postgraduate curriculums toward the art of presenting research work in written format. Yet, the publication is considered essential toward career advancement and for obtaining academic qualifications. We herein discuss the basic steps to follow in writing a scientific article using the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion format. The Introduction explains the scope and objective of the study in the light of current knowledge on the subject; the Materials and Methods describes how the study was conducted; the Results section reports what was found in the study; and the Discussion section explains the meaning and significance of the results and provides suggestions for future directions of research. We enumerate the main elements that should appear in these sections, and some pointers for making the overall result attractive and acceptable for publication. We also have placed special emphasis on the methods section (Finer nuances of data collections, Informed consent, steps to seek approval by the Institutional Ethics Committee and authorship directives as per IJCME guidelines), Results (How to highlight the results of the study using illustrations, charts, and legends, and Discussion section ("Structured approach" and the "Divide and rule" approach). A hastily written article with incorrect methodology remains the primary reason for rejection by the journal reviewers, and following the above directives would contribute toward obtaining a fruitful result.

Abstract:Scientific writing is an important skill for a career as a professional astrophysicist. Very few researchers, however, receive any formal training in how to write scientific research papers of high quality in an efficient manner. This paper (Paper I) is the first of a two-part self-help guide in scientific writing to address this skills gap. Paper I focuses on planning your academic research paper in astronomy.
