Abstract:Extraction is the critical link during pharmaceutical process of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is directly related to the quality of drugs. So the key to technology upgrading of pharmaceutical equipment in Chinese materia medica enterprise is the development of new extraction techniques, which concerns the modernization of TCM. In this paper, fundamentals, traits, and development status of new extraction technologies were firstly introduced, including ultrasound extraction, microwave extraction, super fluid extraction, semi-bionic extraction method, enzymatic treatment extraction, continuous countercurrent extraction, vacuum extraction. Then information of projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China was analyzed in order to recognize the assistance and research results of new extraction techniques. The patents authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office were also summarized for the purpose of understanding the achievement transformation. The information about extraction equipments was collected and screened to acquire the characteristics and market situation. The results showed that there are still problems about new extraction technologies, such as weak basic study, hard transformation of achievements, and the disconnection between research study and practical application. It is necessary to discuss the approaches and methods for accelerating the transformation of fundamental research, which will provide references for the long-term development of new extraction techniques of TCM.

Abstract:The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a classic industry in China.With the development of life science and the increasing demand of natural medicines,TCM will become a worldwide hot spot in the pharmaceutical field.Although China has abundant resources and many TCM manufacturers,we have to go a long way to catch up with the international technical level in terms of equipment,quality control and automatic control.This paper reviews the production process of TCM,the characteristics of different production procedures and the automation control techniques for traditional Chinese medicines production.

Abstract:The extraction and separation of effective components from Chinese herb and natural plant is one of the most important processes of natural medicine production. Recently, more and more advanced techniques have been used in the field of modern Chinese medicines, for example, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Developed on the base of traditional extracting technology using by organic solvents, MAE is of higher extraction rate and efficiency and better extract quality, as well as few investment, simple equipment, wide adaptability, high selectivity, good fidelity and no pollution. This paper mainly reviews the action principle and characteristic of MAE and its application in the extraction of natural products such as flavonoids, glycosides, polysaccharides, terpenoids and essence. Otherwise, the developing foreground of MAE is also prospected here.

Abstract:Objective:To review the development history and status of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture,in order to provide references for future research. Methods:Based on clarifying the meaning and significance of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture,summarize the content and feature in each stage. Results:The development history contains three stage since 1994s:summary and quest of clinical experience,consult from expert advice,scientific and systematic review for devel-opment in theory. Conclusion:The study of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture is a complex and systematic project,needs to be constantly improved as well. Abstract:Multi-stage countercurrent extraction technology, integrating solvent extraction, repercolation with dynamic and countercurrent extraction, is a novel extraction technology for the traditional Chinese medicine. This solvent-saving, energy-saving and high-extraction-efficiency technology can at the most drive active compounds to diffuse from the herbal materials into the solvent stage by stage by creating concentration differences between the herbal materials and the solvents. This paper reviewed the basic principle, the influence factors and the research progress and trends of the equipments and the application of the multi-stage countercurrent extraction.

Abstract:Percolation extraction is a conventional extraction method used in the processing of traditional Chinese medicines. After medicinal material powder is placed in a percolation tank, the extraction solvent is continuously added, and percolation extract is collected simultaneously. The percolation equipment is simple. The percolation operation is easy. It is applicable to a wide range of medicinal materials. Components that are unstable under thermal conditions can be effectively extracted. However, there are also disadvantages, such as high solvent consumption, long extraction time, and high energy consumption in subsequent concentration processes. This article mainly reviews the research progress on the common equipment types, affecting factors, parameter optimization methods, and process monitoring. According to analysis on literatures, solvent composition, impregnation time, percolation speed, and solvent consumption are considered as the important factors of percolation processes. At present, near-infrared spectroscopy is widely used in the monitoring of percolation process, and partial least square is a commonly used quantitative modeling method. According to the concept of "Quality by Design", in-depth investigation of the percolation process mechanism and development of process control methods are future development trends. Therefore, process modeling, process optimization and process monitoring shall be improved. The mechanism models and the empirical models of column chromatography can be used as references to construct the percolation process models. The effect of the quality changes of medicinal materials shall be taken into account when optimizing the percolation process parameters. More simple and easy methods shall be developed to monitor the percolation process status and key properties of percolation extracts.

Abstract:Objective This review aims to summarize and elucidate the extraction processes of traditional Chinese medicine granules, examining their connection to quality control, with the aim of establishing a foundation for superior extraction methodologies. Methodology This article systematically collects and analyzes relevant literature from the past two decades through databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and CNKI, focusing on the extraction processes of traditional Chinese medicine granules and the factors affecting extraction efficiency. Results This article provides a comprehensive account of the extraction and granulation processes of traditional Chinese medicine granules. Beginning with the physicochemical properties and chemical components of herbal slices, it explores ways to improve extraction efficiency while also examining the relationship between component structure and biological activity. Rooted in the fundamental theories of traditional Chinese medicine and harmonized with contemporary extraction technologies, it follows the principle that "quality originates from design," ensuring stringent control over the extraction process. Conclusion This article analyzes extraction technologies, factors influencing extraction efficiency, and quality control measures, establishing a theoretical basis for achieving high‐quality and high‐yield extraction processes.

Abstract:Like other traditional medicine in the world, Chinese traditional medicine (CTM) has a long history, which is a treasure of the combination of medicine and Chinese classical culture even more than 5000 years. For thousands of years, CTM has made great contributions to the reproduction and health of the Chinese people. It was an efficient therapeutic tool under the guidance of Chinese traditional medical theory, its source is generally natural products, but there are also a small number of it are natural products after some processing methods. In fact, the definition of Chinese medicine (CM) includes both traditional and new CM developed by modern technology. It is well known that the chemical composition of most CM and natural products is very complex, for example, a single herb may contain hundreds of different chemicals, including active ingredients, side effects, and even toxic ingredients. Therefore, the extraction process is particularly crucial for the quality and clinical efficacy of CM and natural products. In this work, a new classification method was proposed to divide the extraction technologies of CM and natural products into 21 kinds in recent years and analyze their status, advantages, and disadvantages. Then put forward a new technical route based on ultra‐high‐pressure extraction technology for rapid extraction else while removing harmful impurities and making higher utilization of CM and natural products. It is a useful exploration for the extraction industry of medicinal materials and natural products in the world.

Abstract:Alkaloids are the effective ingredients in many Chinese herbs.The extraction and purification technology is the key issue in alkaloid preparation.At present,the commonly used extraction technology includes decoction,circumfluence,maceration and percolation.The purification technology includes organic solvent extraction,adsorption chromatography,ion-exchange resin adsorption and macro-porous resin adsorption.New technologies such as ultrasound,microwave,supercritical fluid extraction,molecular imprinting and membrane separation technology are used to increase efficiency and save energy of the extraction and purification process.The methods and the application of new technologies in extracting and purifying alkaloids are reviewed.Moreover the prospect of alkaloid preparation is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper,microwave drying equipments and the application of microwave drying technology in Chinese medicine were introduced.Advantages of microwave drying in the preparation of Chinese medicine extracts and products were also summarized.Advantages of microwave drying include fast drying,high energy utilization,uniform drying effect,effective sterilization,and easy automatic control.Meanwhile,three suggestions were proposed to solve the application problems,which include the study of drying processes mechanism,development of online testing technology and evaluation improvement of microwave drying methods.

Abstract:Solid phase extraction is widely used in sample pretreatment, concentration and analysis processes due to high selectivity and suitability for low concentration sample system. In this review, we systematically summarized and discussed the development trends of solid phase extraction by bibliometrics method. By analyzing papers output scale, the research and development direction of solid phase extraction technology is prospected. We also give an overview on current strategies of novel solid phase extraction from the separation medium and separation technology. The paper aims to describe the global research profile and the development trends of solid phase extraction, to help researchers to accurately grasp the research trend and to provide support for scientific research institutions to formulate scientific policies and strategic plans. Furthermore, the prospect of the development and application of solid phase extraction is also discussed.

Abstract:As a typical naturally derived drug, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has developed for several thousands of years and accumulated abundant human pharmacological information and experience to form an integrated theory system. However, the problems of lower product quality, substandard codes and standards, and under-enhancement of fundamental research have restricted its further development and acceptance internationally. In this review, we explain the origin and developmental history of TCM, species involved in TCM, and their distributions in biotaxy. According to the status and problems, it is concluded that TCM modernization has become necessary and urgent. Modernization of TCM means the combination of TCM with modern technology, modern academic thoughts, and modern scientific culture, in which the most important point is to elucidate the active component of TCM, especially the material foundation of compound prescriptions and their pharmacodynamic mechanisms. Technology of analytical chemistry (HPLC, HPCE, HSCCC, etc.) and molecular biology (patch clamp, gene clamp, gene chip, fluorescent probe, DNA TUNEL assay, in situ hybridization, etc.) are useful tools to realize the modernization of TCM. Based on those studies and achievements and coupled with computer technology, all TCM products will achieve digitalization and normalization. TCM modernization will provide the world with useful reference information on traditional medicines.

[Application prospect of new technology and new equipment in production of Chinese patent medicine]

Abstract:At present,the production equipment and process of Chinese patent medicines still have many problems including high energy consumption,low efficiency,high pollution,and low intelligence,which seriously hinder the transformation,upgrading and modernized development of traditional Chinese medicine industry. With the emergence of various new pharmaceutical technologies and the application of technologies of other fields in traditional Chinese medicine industry,the development of Chinese patent medicine has ushered in new opportunities. The processes such as pulverization,mixing,extraction,separation,concentration,drying and sterilization are unique for the production of Chinese patent medicine. These main features can be distinguished from the manufacturing process of chemical drugs,determining the characteristics of the production process and equipment of Chinese patent medicine. In this paper,each operation unit was mentioned to summarize and analyze the new equipment and new technologies with advantages and characteristics in recent years from the perspectives of definition,principle,classification and application. Among them,the automatic spray device of the mixer,the extraction and separation equipment of volatile oil,and the crane basket-type circulation extraction technology,composite multi-layer spiral vibration countercurrent drying,and vibration sterilization equipment all have rapid development in recent years,with great prospects in the production of Chinese patent medicines. In this paper,we also analyzed some problems existing in the production equipment and technology of Chinese patent medicine and the key factors restricting the development of Chinese patent medicine,discussed the transformation of Chinese patent medicine production from traditional to modern and from semi-automatic to intelligent,and put forward three suggestions to help Chinese patent medicine achieve the goal of improving quality,efficiency and green manufacturing in production.
