Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of bioethanol production,the concentration of lignocellulosichydrolyzates and removal of furfural by vacuum membrane distillation(VMD) was investigated.The operation parameters,including flow rate,feed temperature and sugar concentration on the process were optimized,followed by the concentration of hydrolyzates and fermentation experiment.Results showed that the rejection of the glucose was over 99.5% and the removal of furfural was up to 95.16% at the optimal condition of the velocity of 1.0 m/s,temperature of 65 ℃.The concentration of ethanol in broth for concentrated hydrolyzates was 2.64 times than that for the originalsolution.These results indicated that the VMD process was effective for the concentration of hydrolyzates and increasing the efficiency of ethanol fermentation.

Abstract:Ethanol production from food wastes does not only solve environmental issues but also provides renewable biofuels. This study investigated the feasibility of producing ethanol from food wastes at high solids content (35%, w/w). A vacuum recovery system was developed and applied to remove ethanol from fermentation broth to reduce yeast ethanol inhibition. A high concentration of ethanol (144 g/L) was produced by the conventional fermentation of food waste without a vacuum recovery system. When the vacuum recovery is applied to the fermentation process, the ethanol concentration in the fermentation broth was controlled below 100 g/L, thus reducing yeast ethanol inhibition. At the end of the conventional fermentation, the residual glucose in the fermentation broth was 5.7 g/L, indicating incomplete utilization of glucose, while the vacuum fermentation allowed for complete utilization of glucose. The ethanol yield for the vacuum fermentation was found to be 358 g/kg of food waste (dry basis), higher than that for the conventional fermentation at 327 g/kg of food waste (dry basis).

Abstract:We studied the effects of components in lignocellulosic ethanol fermentation broth on ethanol transfer through polydimethylsiloxane?silicalite?1 pervaporation membrane to tackle product inhibition by integrated with ethanol fermentation. Yeasts,corn stover residues and salts could increase the ethanol flux and selectivity through the membrane, whereas glucose and glycerol had negative effects on membrane performance?Lignocellulosic hydrolysates, such as furfural and hydroxyacetone, slightly influenced separation performance?In batch fermentation, ethanol productivity reduced from 12?95 to 10?22 g/( L·h) after 20 h, and became 0 after 60 h?The glucose consumption curve also confirms the same tendency?However, the ethanol fermentation integrated with pervaporation gave a stable ethanol productivity about 13?30 g/( L·h)?Experiments further proved that integrated process of lignocellulosic ethanol fermentation and ethanol?selected pervaporation through polydimethylsiloxane?silicalite?1 membrane could eliminate product inhibition, improve ethanol productivity and glucose conversion rate very effectively.

Abstract:Low sugar concentration and the presence of various inhibitors are the major challenges associated with lignocellulosic hydrolyzates as a fermentation broth. Vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process can be used to concentrate sugars and remove inhibitors (furans) efficiently, but it's not desirable for the removal of less volatile inhibitors such as acetic acid. In this study, a VMD-adsorption process was proposed to improve the removal of acetic acid, achieving simultaneous concentration and detoxification of lignocellulosic hydrolyzates by one step process. Results showed that sugars were concentrated with high rejections (>98%) and little sugar loss (<2%), with the significant reduction in nearly total furans (99.7%) and acetic acid (83.5%) under optimal operation conditions. Fermentation results showed the ethanol production of hydrolyzates concentrated and detoxified using the VMD-adsorption method were approximately 10-fold greater than from untreated hydrolyzates.

Abstract:Ethanol production from corn stover hemicellulosic hydrolysate was investigated using immobilized recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells. Detoxification of hemicellulosic hydrolysate by roto-evaporation and lime neutralization was carried out to remove volatile fermentation inhibitors. All furfural and more than 50% acetic acid in the hydrolysate were removed, meanwhile the xylose concentration was enhanced to 71.8g/L. The fermentability of the detoxified hydrolysate was significantly improved using immobilized cells of recombinant S. cerevisiae by Ca-alginate. An ethanol concentration of 31.1g/L and the corresponding ethanol yield on fermentable sugars of 0.406g/g were obtained within 72h in batch fermentation of the detoxified hydrolysate with immobilized cells. In addition, repeated batch fermentation of immobilized recombinant S. cerevisiae cells was attempted for ethanol production for 5 batches. The concentration of ethanol in each batch maintained above 30.1g/L with the ethanol yield on fermentable sugars over 0.393g/g. These results demonstrate the viability and significance of ethanol production from corn stover hemicellulosic hydrolysate.

Abstract:Three corn stover hydrolysates, enzymatic hydrolysates prepared from acid and alkaline pretreatments separately and hemicellulosic hydrolysate prepared from acid pretreatment, were evaluated in composition and fermentability. For enzymatic hydrolysate from alkaline pretreatment, ethanol yield on fermentable sugars and fermentation efficiency reached highest among the three hydrolysates; meanwhile, ethanol yield on dry corn stover reached 0.175g/g, higher than the sum of those of two hydrolysates from acid pretreatment. Fermentation process of the enzymatic hydrolysate from alkaline pretreatment was further investigated using free and immobilized cells of recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae ZU-10. Concentrated hydrolysate containing 66.9g/L glucose and 32.1g/L xylose was utilized. In the fermentation with free cells, 41.2g/L ethanol was obtained within 72h with an ethanol yield on fermentable sugars of 0.416g/g. Immobilized cells greatly enhanced the ethanol productivity, while the ethanol yield on fermentable sugars of 0.411g/g could still be reached. Repeated batch fermentation with immobilized cells was further attempted up to six batches. The ethanol yield on fermentable sugars maintained above 0.403g/g with all glucose and more than 92.83% xylose utilized in each batch. These results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of ethanol production from corn stover hydrolysates.

Abstract:Thick mash for fermentation of raw starch presenting the inhibition of alcohol on yeast in the latter part,this study proposes the method of vacuum recovery of ethanol to eliminate this inhibition.The results showed that,in the small-scale experiment,the concentration of ethanol was reduced to below 2.0% with 0.09 MPa and 45 ℃ by 20 min.Fermentation broth was vacuumed after 36 h of normal fermentation process,and then sterile water was added to the broth which could increase the productivity of fermentation to 10%,reduce the residual sugar to 7.9%,and cut the time short from 96 h to 72 h.

Abstract:In corn-ethanol industry, yeast stress inducing glucose concentrations produced during liquefaction and subsequent high ethanol concentrations produced during fermentation restrict slurry solids to 32 % w/w. These limits were circumvented by combining two novel technologies: (1) granular starch hydrolyzing enzyme (GSHE) to break down starch simultaneously with fermentation and (2) vacuum stripping to remove ethanol. A vacuum stripping system was constructed and applied to fermentations at 30, 40, and 45 % solids. As solids increased from 30 to 40 %, ethanol yield decreased from 0.35 to 0.29 L/kg. Ethanol yield from 45 % solids was only 0.18 L/kg. An improvement was conducted by increasing enzyme dose from 0.25 to 0.75 g/g corn and reducing yeast inoculum by half. After improvement, ethanol yield from 40 % solids vacuum treatment increased to 0.36 L/kg, comparable to ethanol yield from 30 % solids (control).

Abstract:Ethanol fermentation from food waste could reduce the solid waste pollution and realize energy utilization. In order to decrease distillation waste, the recycle of such waste was adopted in ethanol fermentation. It demonstrated that such treatment could only last for four times due to the existence of side products. The distillation waste would gradually reduce ethanol concentration and sugar utilization ratio, lactic acid would be accumulated to 8 g/L, and salinity would be accumulated to 10 g/L, pH decreased to less than 3.5. Three-dimensional fluorescence analysis showed protein-type substances, microbial metabolism type substances, and humic substances were accumulated during the recycling. In order to resolve such problems, addition of protease was chosen in this research. The recycling time could enhance to seven times and the highest ethanol concentration was 35 g/L, the lowest ethanol concentration was 20 g/L. The recycling of distillation waste could save water resource, reduce wastewater discharges with high COD lees and reduce the cost. Which provided a new way for the clean production of bioethanol production from food waste.
Impacts of Distillage Recycle on Continuous Ethanol Fermentation Using Self-flocculating Yeast

Abstract:Continuous ethanol fermentations with and without recycling of distillage were carried out in two suspended-bed bioreactors,respectively,using two-stage enzymatic hydrolyte of corn powder as medium.For the fermentation coupled with distillage recycle,every five days,the total backset distillage collected was directly used to mix the corn powder,and the experimental results revealed that the concentrations of ethanol,residual reductive sugar,inorganic phosphate and total solids in the broth were maintained stably around 9.4%(v/v),26 g/L,11 g/L, 3.36 g/L,0.136 g/L and 85 g/L,respectively.Compared with the fermentation without distillage recycle,accumulations of residual reductive sugar,inorganic phosphate and total solids were observed in the beginning period of fermentation.But a steady-state was reached after a long time running,and the ethanol concentration was closed to that of the control,which indicated that these accumulations did not exert significant inhibition on cell growth and ethanol formation.

Abstract:The high cost of the lignocellulose-degrading enzyme is one of the major bottlenecks for economically producing cellulosic ethanol. To overcome this bottleneck, we performed in-situ vacuum distillation (at 50 degrees C, 77 mmHg for 30 min) to remove ethanol after simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of delignified corncob residues (DCCR). The cellulase and yeast cells left in the stillage were reused by adding fresh DCCR to start a new cycle. This process cycle was repeated five times. Both cellulase and yeast cells were reused five times with a significant cellulase reduction from 16.3 mg of enzyme protein (EP)/g cellulose to as low as 3.3 mg EP/g cellulose. Meanwhile the ethanol in the fermentation broth was maintained as high as 40 g/L before each vacuum distillation. The final ethanol yield after five cycles reached 72.7%. The process economic analysis based on the Aspen Plus model indicated that the cost of the saved cellulase was much higher than that of the additional energy needed to carry out the vacuum distillation. Almost 24% of the ethanol production cost could be reduced by using this new approach compared to batch SSF without cellulase recycling.

Abstract:The free cells of Candida krusei were recycled during repeated batch fermentation to produce glycerol. The kinetics of glycerol formation with recycled cells washed and not washed was studied. Some inhibition was found during cell recycling but could be removed by washing recycled cells. In 12 cycles of repeated batch fermentation with recycled washed cells, glycerol productivity increased greatly during the earlier three cycles and then remained constant in the following cycles. Kinetic studies showed that higher glycerol productivity in repeated batch fermentation compared with that in ordinary batch fermentation was due to the high biomass concentration.

Abstract:Butanol fermentation is inhibited by butanol product, leading to low productivity, low product concentration and poor economic feasibility. In order to decrease the inhibition of butanol, PDMS/PVDF membrane was prepared for separating acetone, butanol and ethanol from aqueous solutions. Taking separation factor and flux as evaluating index, the effects of feed temperature, mass fraction and pH on pervaporation performance were investigated. The results indicate that the membrane separation performance ascends with increasing feed temperature; the increase of feed mass fraction improves the total flux and the separation factor of butanol but reduces the separation factors of acetone and ethanol; the pH of feed liquid has little influence. By utilizing PDMS/PVDF membrane in butanol fermentation, coupled with butanol fermentation and separation, the utilization ratio of cassava starch and the solvent mass fraction are increased by 51.2% and 87.3%, respectively. The production intensity during the period of coupling is 1.33 g/(L·h), increasing by 73.7%, and butanol is condensed in the penetrant. So the PDMS/PVDF membrane can be used for butanol fermentation, and the economics of butanol fermentation process can be improved.

Abstract:A sustainable bioeconomy in agricultural and agro-industrial production must inevitably involve the sustainable use of agricultural residues through zero-waste processes. Corn cob is considered crucial agricultural waste as 278 and 293 million tons were produced worldwide in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Corn cob hydrolysates, which are abundant in xylose and glucose, could be efficiently utilized for xylitol and ethanol production through the cultivation of recycling the yeast strain Candida magnoliae TISTR 5664 in the single-stage and sequential-stage co-production of these products. The statistically significant maxima (p ≤ 0.05) ethanol concentrations were improved by 7.8% (49.9–51.7 g/L or 91.3–95.6% of the theoretical) from the single stage of ethanol production employing recycled cells and 9.9% (50.9–54.1 g/L or 77.3–83.9% of the theoretical) from the second step of sequential-stage co-production using recycled cells without xylitol accumulation. Conversely, the single-stage xylitol production utilizing recycled cells under microaerobic conditions resulted in a statistically significant lower (p ≤ 0.05) xylitol concentration by two folds relative to the control, while ethanol concentration was elevated by almost double. The statistically significant maximum (p ≤ 0.05) xylitol was achieved at 25.9 g/L (58.6% of the theoretical) when sequential-stage co-production was initiated in the first step with fresh inoculum only and not recycled cells. The sequential-stage co-production of xylitol and ethanol presented the potential for statistically significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05) of both xylitol and ethanol production processes.

Abstract:The combination of ethanol fermentation and solvent extraction is one of effective methods for increasing ethanol production rate. In this paper, extractive fermentation for ethanol production was carried out by using immobilized yeast cell, where the dodecanol was used as extractive solvent. The effects of extractive content, rotary rate and substrate concentration on extractive fermentation have been discussed, the partition coefficient of ethanol in extraction was also examined. They would be useful for further researches on extractive fermentation.

Abstract:This research aimed to study the effect of distillage recycling on ethanol fermentation, the key glycolytic enzymes and cell composition of the self-flocculating yeast. With the self-flocculating yeast SPSC01 and medium composed of 220 g/L glucose, 8 g/L yeast extract and 6 g/L peptone, continuous ethanol fermentation was carried out at the dilution rate of 0.04 h(-1) with a 1.5 L tank bioreactor. Fermentation broth was collected every 3 days, and ethanol and other volatile byproducts were removed by distillation, but the stillage with high boiling byproducts was recycled to prepare the medium instead of fresh water. The system was run for 20 days, during which ethanol and biomass concentrations in the effluent decreased continuously, indicating the significant inhibition of the high boiling byproducts accumulated within the system. Thus, the activities of the key enzymes of the glycolytic pathway: hexokinase, 6-phosphofructose kinase, and pyruvate kinase were analyzed, and it was observed that all of them were inhibited. Furthermore, the biosynthesis of the stress response metabolites glycerol and trehalose was investigated, and it was found that glycerol production that can protect yeast cells against osmotic pressure stress was enhanced, but trehalose biosynthesis that can protect yeast cells against ethanol inhibition was not improved, correspondingly. And in the meantime, the biosynthesis of the major intracellular components proteins and hydrocarbons was adjusted, correspondingly.
Impact of Accumulated By-products During Distillage Recycling on Growth and Ethanol Fermentation of the Self-flocculating Yeast SPSC01

Abstract:Continuous ethanol fermentation coupled with the recycling of waste distillage was carried out in a single agitating bioreactor with the self-flocculating yeast and two-stage enzymatic hydrolysate of corn meal.The fermentation broth collected was distilled to separate ethanol and other volatile products in every 3 d,and the distillage was used to mix corn meal instead of fresh water.The fermentation system was run continuously for 25 d,and the accumulation of acetic acid,lactic acid,propionic acid,furfural and 2-phenyl-ethyl-alcohol,the byproducts that are inhibitory in the growth and ethanol fermentation of the self-flocculating yeast with their minimum inhibition concentrations of 3,20,1.5,2 and 1.5 g/L,respectively,was monitored.It was found that propionic acid with its concentration of 2.7 g/L was the only byproduct accumulated to the level higher than its minimum inhibition concentration.And in the meantime,the synergistic effect of propionic acid and 2-phenyl-ethyl-alcohol as well as furfural and 2-phenyl-ethyl-alcohol were observed.

Abstract:A continuous ethanol fermentation system composed of three-stage tanks in series coupled with two sedimentation tanks was established. A self-flocculating yeast strain developed by protoplast fusion from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe was applied. Two-stage enzymatic hydrolysate of corn powder containing 220 g/L residual reducing sugar, supplemented with 1.5 g/L (NH4)2HPO4 and 2.5 g/L KH2PO4, was used as the ethanol fermentation substrate and fed into the first fermentor at the dilution rate of 0.057 h−1. The yeast flocs separated by sedimentation were recycled into the first fermentor as two models: activation-recycle and direct-recycle. The quasi-steady states were obtained for both operation models after the fermentation systems experienced short periods of transitions. Activation process helped enhance the performance of ethanol fermentation at high dilution rates. The broth containing more than 101 g/L ethanol, 3.2 g/L residual reducing sugar, and 7.7 g/L residual total sugar was produced. The ethanol productivity was calculated to be 5.77 g L−1 h−1, which increased by more than 70 % compared with that achieved in the same tank in series system without recycling of yeast cells.

Abstract:Alcohol is one of productions of the most longest in the industry of ferment.The dealing with waste water is the most disadvantage in the industry of ferment.But most of people ignore the sufficient nutrition of the Distiller Grain.According our experiment,In the best ferment condition,the Distiller Grain has 0.2%glucose,0.8%starch,a lot of yeast and protein,including a lot of growth factor of yeast. This article study the recycle and use of Distiller Grain.The procedure is first degydrate the Distiller Grain using crude production of complex enzyme.Then was taken into fermentor as nutritious liquid.The result indicate that the transformation of the row material was increased by 2%.the transformation of the water was increased by 80%.Further more the cost of the dealing with water declined,even the use of energy was also improved.After many ferment experiment,the benefit of economy increase by 50$on one ton cassava.
