Abstract:A review of p-terephthalic acid (PTA) process development carried out in Zhejiang University during recent years was made. The R & D works cover oxidation and crystallization kinetics, gas-liquid mass transfer, reactor modeling, database development, novel reactor design, process modeling, simulation and optimization. A viewpoint was emphasized through this case study, which chemical reaction engineering should be developed to process system engineering to extend its scope, and particular attention should be paid on reactor and process unit modeling.

Abstract:Process intensification calls for the combination of two or more conventional unit operations within one framework, thus giving rise to a challenging coordination problem in process synthesis and design. Seeking synergistic effect among all the conventional unit operations involved is found to be an important principle for process development. Three cases of process intensification are studied to evaluate the principle, including: (i) a hypothetical reactive distillation system; (ii) a reactive distillation column for the hydration of ethylene oxide; (iii) an ideal heat-integrated distillation column. It is demonstrated that simply combining two or more conventional unit operations together does not necessarily tap out the full potentials of capital investment reduction and energy saving. Only after the synergistic effect has been deliberately considered in process synthesis and design, can process intensification be carried out in the most effective manner. Furthermore, seeking synergistic effect appears frequently to yield improved process dynamics and provide additional redundancy to process operation because the underlying conflicts could be attenuated among all the conventional unit operations involved.

Abstract:Process design and control are closely related to each other in chemical engineering activities. Traditionally, process design and control system design are carried out in sequence. However, the integration of process design and control (IPDC) can bring greater economic benefits and process dynamic performance than traditional sequential design methods. This is true, particularly for modern chemical processes, in which various process units become more interacting and compact owing to the widespread use of heat integration and recycled streams, and the resulted impacts between process design and control begin to significantly influence both the capital and operational costs. Recently, considerable studies about the IPDC for chemical processes have been reported in published literature. The purpose of the paper is to survey the applications of optimization-based integrating process design and control for chemical processes. Firstly, attention has been focused on the applications of IPDC to different process units, for example, chemical reactors and separation columns. Then, the survey is extended to the applications of IPDC to plant-wide chemical processes. Finally, the future research challenges in the application of IPDC to chemical processes have been briefly discussed.

Abstract:The manufacturing industry is challenged by increasing costs of scarce resources, rapid change, and tight competition in global markets, and the need for efficient and sustainable process design and operating strategies. Addressing these challenges has been the focus of process intensification (PI). Polymerization processes face the additional challenge of meeting tight product specifications, which are dictated by the demands of high quality and advanced materials. Meeting these specifications requires the incorporation of complex molecular weight distribution (MWD) models based on population balances of all the polymer chains. Addressing these challenges through process intensification requires the development and application of efficient, robust, and powerful optimization strategies and modeling frameworks, leading to an essential strategy for process intensification of polymerization systems. This survey presents the development and application of novel optimization strategies for model development, process synthesis and design, and the operation of polymer processes. The effectiveness of these optimization-based approaches will be demonstrated on a slurry process for high density polyethylene (HDPE), where significant advances in process intensification have been realized. Future directions are given, with the aim of benefiting both research and application in this field.

Abstract:Process intensification technology for polymerization is an effective technical means to maximization of the efficiency of polymerization process,controllability of polymer product structures,and green polymerization process and polymer product. Development of process intensification technology for polymerization was reviewed. The features of different process intensification methods were analyzed with emphasis in terms of flow and mixing,heat and mass transfer,reactive coupling,supercritical fluid,external field,etc. Also,the existent problems were discussed. It is revealed that process intensification technologies for polymerization should focus on the effective coupling between polymerization kinetics and polymerization equipment. Process intensification methods based on polymerization characteristics are the future directions of development.

Abstract:Process optimization plays an important role in design,operation,control and computer(integrated) control of process industries.This paper presents the description of steady-state optimization,(dynamic) optimization,and the optimization of process structures based on changing market conditions in(process) industries.Characteristics of these optimization problems are addressed and state of the art solution approaches are proposed.Sequential quadratic programming and orthogonal collocation is used to solve the dynamic optimization problem.Finally,the dynamic optimization to minimize the energy cost of a heatintegrated distillation column system is illustrated as an example.

Abstract:Process Intensification (PI) is an effective way to enhance process efficiency and sustainability at affordable costs and efforts, attracting particular interest in the European area, as one of the most important chemical production areas in the world. PI primarily contributes by developing and testing new processing technologies that once integrated within a process improve the overall process performance substantially but as a result, it may alter the overall process (flowsheet) structure and its dynamic behavior. As such PI plays a key role in improving energy efficiency, optimizing resource allocation, and reducing environmental impact of industrial processes, and thereby leading to a cost-effective, eco-efficient, low-carbon and sustainable industry. However, along with opportunities, the PI new technologies have challenges related to failures in longer-term performance. In this respect, Process Systems Engineering (PSE) stance is more on integration aspects of new PI technologies into processes by making process (re)designs, doing operability studies, and performance optimizations within a supply chain setting. PSE contributes to overcoming the challenges by providing systematic approaches for the design and optimization of PI technologies. This perspective paper is a lightly referenced scholarly opinion piece about the status and directions of process intensification field from a PSE viewpoint. Primarily, it focuses on PSE perspectives towards sustainable lower energy usage process systems and provides a brief overview of the current situation in Europe. It also emphasizes the key challenges and opportunities for (new) PI technologies considering their integration in a process in terms of process synthesis and design, process flowsheet optimization, process and plantwide control, (green) electrification, sustainability improvements. Potential research directions on these aspects are given from an industrial and academic perspective of the authors.

Abstract:Enzyme catalysis, made tremendous progress over the last years in identification of new enzymes and new enzymatic reactivity’s as well as optimization of existing enzymes. However, the performance of the resulting processes is often still limited, e.g., in regard of productivity, realized product concentrations and the stability of the enzymes. Different topics (like limited specific activity, unfavourable kinetics or limited enzyme stability) can be addressed via enzyme engineering. On the other hand, there is also a long list of topics that are not addressable by enzyme engineering. Here typical examples are unfavourable reaction thermodynamics, selectivity in multistep reactions or low water solubility. These challenges can only be addressed through an adaption of the reaction system. The procedures of process intensification (PI) represent a good approach to reach most suitable systems. The general objective of PI is to achieve significant benefits in terms of capital and operating costs as well as product quality, waste, and process safety by applying innovative principles. The aim of the review is to show the current capabilities and future potentials of PI in enzyme catalysis focused on enzymes of the class of oxidoreductases. The focus of the paper is on alternative methods of energy input, innovative reactor concepts and reaction media with improved properties.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have found many applications due to their unique properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, density, strength, and many more. This review focuses on the recent developments on the synthesis of nanomaterials using process intensification. The review covers the designing of microreactors, design principles, and fundamental mechanisms involved in process intensification using microreactors for synthesizing nanomaterials. The microfluidics technology operates in continuous mode as well as the segmented flow of gas–liquid combinations. Various examples from the literature are discussed in detail highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of microfluidics technology for nanomaterial synthesis.

Abstract:This paper addresses an innovative approach to improve CO2 photoreduction via process intensification. The principle of CO2 photoreduction using process intensification is presented and reviewed. Process intensification via concentrating solar light technology is developed and demonstrated. The concept consists in rising the incident light intensity as well as the reaction temperature and pressure during CO2 photoreduction using concentrating solar light. A solar reactor system using concentrated sunlight was accordingly designed and set up. The distribution of light intensity and temperature in the reactor was modeled and simulated. CO2 photoreduction performance in the reactor system was assessed, and the reaction temperature and pressure evolution were recorded. The results showed that the light intensity, temperature, and pressure could be effectively increased and irradiation on the catalyst surface followed a Gaussian distribution. The CO2 photoreduction reaction rates were enhanced to hundreds of times.

Abstract:Optimization is an eternal topic in chemical processes due to limited resources and various safety and environment constraints. The highly intense market competition has led to the realistic significance of optimizing chemical processes. Chemical processes in China have achieved considerable development in recent years, and new challenges to improve operations have emerged along with this development. This paper briefly overviews recent progress made by our laboratory and existing challenges in chemical process optimization. The process optimization is introduced from the perspective of automation hierarchy and its coordination, followed by our major work with emphasis on real‐time optimization and advanced control layers. Several cases of comprehensive optimization in typical chemical processes are highlighted in this paper. On the basis of these theoretical and industrial practices, challenges in process operations are discussed. Finally, opportunities for future research directions are proposed for high efficient operations and control of chemical processes.

Abstract:The intensification of catalytic cracking of heavy oil by additives was analyzed and discussed according to the principles of engineering chemistry,including the dispersion of carbon precursor and stabilization of bubbles,atomization improvement,acid center protection,coking inhibition as well as formation of a proper colloid structure,the reduction of surface tension and the improvement of micro porous wetting for enhancing the vaporization of feed.A series of enhancing additives facilitating the intensification were synthesized.A bench scale fluidized fixed bed reaction unit was built and the related analytical methods were established to evaluate the additives.The screened out additives showed effects of reducing the coke on catalyst by 1.0% and increasing the total liquid yield by 1.0%～2.8%.
