Abstract:Based on the sensitivity theory, a mathematical mod el was developed for image reconstruction of Electrical Resistance Tomography(ERT) . A new ERT image reconstruction algorithm, which was a combination of Tikhonov regularization with Algebraic Reconstruction Technique(ART), was presented. It i s fo und that the algorithm is stable and the influence of data fluctuation on image reconstruction can be eliminated. Furthermore, the qualities of the images recon structed by the proposed algorithm are improved, compared with the images reconstructed by the sensitivity coefficient method.

Abstract:With incomplete or noisy projections, algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) algorithms can get better image qualities than convolution back-projection (CBP) algorithm. But, it's too slow to meet the practical industrial requirements. Rotating polar-coordinate technique was introduced into ART in this paper, forming Polar-ART (PART) algorithm. PART is 2.7 times as fast as ART with nearly the same quantitative accuracy and it does not need as much memory as ART, which is proved by experiments on 60Co container CT inspection system. A drawback of PART is the loss of resolution in reconstructed images.

Insight Non Destructive Testing and Condition Monitoring

Abstract:Reconstructed images from computed tomography (CT) using the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and simultaneous ART (SART) algorithms often suffer from obvious artefacts when only sparse and limited-angle projection data are available. Using the ability of dictionary learning (DL) in image feature extraction and sparse signal representation, a new iterative reconstruction algorithm, ART-DL-L1, is proposed to overcome the aforementioned limitations. This new algorithm is based on DL and an L1 norm constraint, combined with ART. An alternate iterative solving strategy based on an approach of 'ART first, then adaptive dictionary learning' is suggested and is explicitly described in a flowchart depicting the ART-DL-L1 algorithm. For both a noisy projection of 360° sparse data and limitedangle data of 120°, simulation reconstruction results from the classic Shepp-Logan image obtained using ART-DL-L1 appear to be better than those obtained using SART and total variation (TV) algorithms and also better than the cutting-edge ART-DL-L2 algorithm. Five evaluation metrics corresponding to the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), the residuals and the structural similarity (SSIM) index are adopted to estimate the reconstruction effect. The results suggest that the five metrics obtained using ART-DL-L1 outperform those obtained using the other three algorithms. The impact of using patches of various sizes played by the DL part in ART-DL-L1 is considered in the simulations and the patch size achieving the best reconstructed image quality is identified in this case as 25 (5 × 5). Overall, the proposed ART-DL-L1 algorithm may reduce artefacts and suppress noise from incomplete noisy projection CT imaging to some degree.
Reduced iteration image reconstruction of incomplete projection CT using regularization strategy through Lp norm dictionary learning

Abstract:Background: For sparse and limited angle projection Computed Tomography (CT), the reconstructed image usually suffers from considerable artifacts due to undersampled data. Objective: To improve image reconstruction quality of sparse and limited angle projection CT, this study tested a novel reconstruction algorithm based on Dictionary Learning (DL) from sparse and limited projections. Methods: The study used signal sparse representation and feature extraction to render the DL technology, which is constrained by L2 and Lp norms, respectively. A Lp Norm Dictionary Learning term is suitable for regular term of objective function for CT image reconstruction. This is helpful for solving the objective function by combining algorithm of ART. Based on these features, the new algorithm of ART-DL-Lp is proposed for CT image reconstruction. The alternate solving strategy of the algorithm of "ART first, then adaptive DL" is provided in sequence. The impact on reconstruction results of ART-DL-Lp at different p values (0 < p < 1) is also considered. Results: For non-ideal projections with noise, the digital experiments show that ART-DL-Lp data were superior to those of ART, SART, and ART-DL-L2. Accordingly, the objective evaluation metrics for non-ideal situation of RMSE, MAE, PSNR, Residuals and SSIM are all better than those of contrasted three algorithms. The metrics curves of ART-DL-Lp algorithm are recorded as the best. In both incomplete projection situations, smaller p-value of ART-DL-Lp algorithm induces more close reconstructed images to the original form and better five objective evaluation metrics. Conclusions: Overall, the reconstruction efficiency of the proposed ART-DL-Lp for CT imaging using the noisy incomplete projections outperforms ART, SART and ART-DL-L2 algorithms. For ART-DL-Lp algorithm, lower p-values result in better reconstruction performance.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the recent contributions made by the authors in the field of CT imaging. The work includes both theoretical research and industrial applications of methods about image reconstruction, image processing and understanding. The contributions can be concluded into four aspects: i) algorithms for 3D cone-beam reconstruction are analyzed in performance and with error distribution, and a new algorithm is proposed to improve image quality; ii) reconstruction methods under different principle are studied and implemented, iii) system performance is evaluated theoretically and experimentally based on task, iv) effective methods for image processing and understanding are presented and verified for practical usage.

Abstract:Computed tomography (CT) has been extensively studied for years and widely used in the modern society. Although the filtered back-projection algorithm is the method of choice by manufacturers, efforts are being made to revisit iterative methods due to their unique advantages, such as superior performance with incomplete noisy data. In 1984, the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) was developed as a major refinement of the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART). However, the convergence of the SART has never been established since then. In this paper, the convergence is proved under the condition that coefficients of the linear imaging system are nonnegative. It is shown that from any initial guess the sequence generated by the SART converges to a weighted least square solution.

Abstract:We propose two variable weighted iterative reconstruction algorithms (VW-ART and VW-OS-SART) to improve the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) and establish their convergence. In the two algorithms, the weighting varies with the geometrical direction of the ray. Experimental results with both numerical simulation and real CT data demonstrate that the VW-ART has a significant improvement in the quality of reconstructed images over ART and OS-SART. Abstract:The CT limited-angle problem has been discussed for many years because of the strong demand in medical imaging applications. However as a severely ill-posed problem, it is hard to achieve accurate reconstruction if no additional prior information is given. Recently, an ART+TV reconstruction method was proposed. With the prior knowledge of image sparsity, the ART+TV gives high quality reconstructions far beyond other methods. In our work, we further explored the ART+TV method on limited-angle problems and delivered a new ART+ATV method. In our new method, the actual range of view angles is considered as another prior information and according to it an anisotropic total variation (ATV) norm is designed to perform L1-minimization. Meanwhile inherited from the ART+TV method, the prior knowledge of image sparsity is considered as well. With the combination of the two priors, the ART+ATV method shows a high-quality and fast-convergence reconstruction on limited-angle problems.

Abstract:In recent years, CT technology has become increasingly mature. However, the existing CT imaging methods still have great difficulties in large object imaging, high resolution imaging and radiation dose reduction. In fact, many engineering applications do not require global CT imaging of a complete object, only the object images of some regions of interest can be obtained, especially in clinical medical diagnosis, as long as the image of suspicious lesions can be achieved. The theory of CT image reconstruction is the basis of medical imaging technology. In order to help medical imaging students better understand the idea of CT image reconstruction, this paper studies the method of CT image reconstruction for regions of interest. Three kinds of image reconstruction methods for projection data under different truncation modes are introduced. The corresponding numerical simulation experiments are designed and the numerical simulation results are given. Finally, the potential application of CT imaging technology in engineering is prospected.
A modified algebraic reconstruction algorithm for sparse projection

Abstract:Background: Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced medical imaging technology. The images obtained by CT are helpful for improving diagnostic accuracy. Currently, CT is widely used in clinical settings for diagnosis and health examinations. However, full angle CT scanning has the disadvantage of causing radiation damage to the human body. Sparse angle projection CT scanning is the most effective way to minimize this damage, but the quality of the reconstructed image is reduced. Therefore, it is important to improve the reconstructed image quality produced by sparse angle projection. Methods: In this paper, we focused on the algebraic reconstruction algorithm. To reduce the accumulation of random noise, we formulated a modified algebraic reconstruction algorithm. Firstly, the algebraic reconstruction algorithm was used to compute two consecutive results, and then the weighted sum of these two results was used to correct the reconstructed image, and an iterative result was obtained. Using this method, we aimed to reduce the noise accumulation caused by iteration. Results: In this study, 20 angle projections were used for the reconstruction. The experimental object was the Shepp-Logan phantom test image. The experiments were implemented under two conditions: without noise and with noise. The peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and the mean squared error (MSE) of the reconstructed image from projections without noise were 76.0896 and 0.0016, respectively. The PSNR and MSE of the reconstructed image from projections with noise were 75.8263 and 0.0017, respectively. The reconstructed performance was superior to the previous algebraic reconstruction algorithm. Conclusions: The performance of the proposed method was superior to other algorithms, which confirms that noise accumulation caused by iteration can be effectively reduced by the weighted summation of two consecutive reconstruction results. Moreover, the reconstruction performance under noisy projection is superior to other algorithms, which demonstrates that the proposed method improves anti-noise performance.

Abstract:In this paper we have discussed what appears to be a superior implementation of the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART). The method is based on 1) simultaneous application of the error correction terms as computed by ART for all rays in a given projection; 2) longitudinal weighting of the correction terms back-distributed along the rays; and 3) using bilinear elements for discrete approximation to the ray integrals of a continuous image. Since this implementation generates a good reconstruction in only one iteration, it also appears to have a computational advantage over the more traditional implementation of ART. Potential applications of this implementation include image reconstruction in conjunction with ray tracing for ultrasound and microwave tomography in which the curved nature of the rays leads to a non-uniform ray density across the image.

Abstract:Tomographic Gamma Scanning (TGS) is employed increasingly to perform the non-destructive assay for radioactive waste. In TGS, the radioactivity distribution within a target object is reconstructed based on the emission CT principles. However, due to the un-negligible detector size and the varying field of view with distances from detector, the ordinary line integral model for CT projection tends to be inapplicable for the radiation intensity image reconstruction in TGS system. The geometrical correction to system matrix and the implementation by iterative algorithm are proposed to solve this problem. In comparison to statistical iteration algorithms such as Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM), the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) algorithm can probably achieve a higher convergence rate, whereas it accumulates reconstruction errors more significantly with iteration, particularly with the more complicated geometrically-corrected system matrix. In this paper, an ART algorithm combined with Total Variation (TV) minimization constraint is presented. By use of the TV constraint, the errors in reconstructed images are effectively eliminated. Monte-Carlo based numerical simulation is performed, and the results show that the ART-TV algorithm reduces the time for image reconstruction without loss of image quality compared with the MLEM algorithm.
Cause and Correction Methods of Streak-type Artifacts of CT Image

Abstract:Lots of streak-type artifacts exist in 3D CT(Computed Tomography) images after reconstruction,which do much harm to image quality and true flaw.After careful study,we found out these artifacts is caused by random defects in projections.This paper puts forward a method called relative threshold in Radon domain,which eliminates these artifacts by eliminating random defects in Radon domain.Experiment results proved this method is quite effective.It can eliminate almost all streak-type artifacts,improve image quality,and increase little to reconstruction burden(time cost).

Abstract:Compared with usual fan-beam and parallel-beam CT, CBCT has numerous advantages, such as higher spatial resolution, faster scan speed, and etc. Because of the simpler theory structure and faster reconstruction speed, approximate cone beam reconstruction algorithms have become more and more popular in commercial applications. For their theoretical and practical value, several recent developed approximate algorithms are discussed here. We compare the advantages and disadvantages of these algorithms through some simulation reconstruction tests.

Abstract:X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been playing an important role in diagnostic of cancer and radiotherapy. However, high imaging dose added to healthy organs during CT scans is a serious clinical concern. Imaging dose in CT scans can be reduced by reducing the number of X-ray projections. In this paper, we consider 2D CT reconstructions using very small number of projections. Some regularization based reconstruction methods have already been proposed in the literature for such task, like the total variation (TV) based reconstruction (Sidky and Pan in Phys. Med. Biol. 53:4777, 2008; Sidky et al. in J. X-Ray Sci. Technol. 14(2):119-139, 2006; Jia et al. in Med. Phys. 37:1757, 2010; Choi et al. in Med. Phys. 37:5113, 2010) and balanced approach with wavelet frame based regularization (Jia et al. in Phys. Med. Biol. 56:3787-3807, 2011). For most of the existing methods, at least 40 projections is usually needed to get a satisfactory reconstruction. In order to keep radiation dose as minimal as possible, while increase the quality of the reconstructed images, one needs to enhance the resolution of the projected image in the Radon domain without increasing the total number of projections. The goal of this paper is to propose a CT reconstruction model with wavelet frame based regularization and Radon domain inpainting. The proposed model simultaneously reconstructs a high quality image and its corresponding high resolution measurements in Radon domain. In addition, we discovered that using the isotropic wavelet frame regularization proposed in Cai et al. (Image restorations: total variation, wavelet frames and beyond, 2011, preprint) is superior than using its anisotropic counterpart. Our proposed model, as well as other models presented in this paper, is solved rather efficiently by split Bregman algorithm (Goldstein and Osher in SIAM J. Imaging Sci. 2(2):323-343, 2009; Cai et al. in Multiscale Model. Simul. 8(2):337-369, 2009). Numerical simulations and comparisons will be presented at the end.
Research on CT Iterative Reconstruction Algorithm Based on Noise Model and Image Constraint

Abstract:This research aims to reduce the effect of noise on reconstructed image of CT. We give a method which adds noise model and image constraint to the CT iterative reconstruction algorithm. The image constraint we use is weighted Total Variation minimization method. The noise model depends on the types of noise. On one hand, the noise in the projection data before logarithmic transformation is approximated by the Poisson distribution. One the other hand, the noise in the projection data after logarithmic transformation is approximated by the Gaussian distribution. Finally, we use the Split-Bergman method to solve our final objective function. In our numerical experiments, we adopt different methods to dispose the projection data in which the noise is already added. And by comparison between the results, we test feasibility of our method. In conclusion, the completed algorithm which is presented in this research is better than other methods. And it can effectively reduce the noise effect and improve the image quality. In the future, we will optimize the algorithm which obtained in our research and extend the methods for 3D construction and apply it for multi-source tomography.
Reconstruction for proton computed tomography by tracing proton trajectories: a Monte Carlo study

Abstract:Proton computed tomography (pCT) has been explored in the past decades because of its unique imaging characteristics, low radiation dose, and its possible use for treatment planning and on-line target localization in proton therapy. However, reconstruction of pCT images is challenging because the proton path within the object to be imaged is statistically affected by multiple Coulomb scattering. In this paper, we employ GEANT4-based Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional pCT reconstruction of an elliptical phantom to investigate the possible use of the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) with three different path-estimation methods for pCT reconstruction. The first method assumes a straight-line path (SLP) connecting the proton entry and exit positions, the second method adapts the most-likely path (MLP) theoretically determined for a uniform medium, and the third method employs a cubic spline path (CSP). The ART reconstructions showed progressive improvement of spatial resolution when going from the SLP [2 line pairs (lp) cm(-1)] to the curved CSP and MLP path estimates (5 lp cm(-1)). The MLP-based ART algorithm had the fastest convergence and smallest residual error of all three estimates. This work demonstrates the advantage of tracking curved proton paths in conjunction with the ART algorithm and curved path estimates.
Multi-segment Limited-Angle CT Reconstruction Via a BM3D Filter

Abstract:Limited-angle reconstruction is an ill-posed problem in CT reconstruction due to incomplete data in frequency domain. Multi-segments limited-angle projection is a special case in image reconstruction, which combines the properties of limited-angle and few-view projections. In this work, we use compressive sensing method to solve multi-segments limited-angle problem. A typical compressive sensing method uses total variation (TV) as a sparse representation of original signals and reconstructs the image by total variation minimization during an iterative process. We apply a BM3D filter in CT reconstruction and give a different sparse representation for compressive sensing. Numerical simulation is performed to compare the performance between ART-TV algorithm and ART-BM3D algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of our ART-BM3D algorithm.

Abstract:We investigate an optimization-based reconstruction, with an emphasis on image-artifact reduction, from data collected in C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) employed in image-guided interventional procedures. In the study, an image to be reconstructed is formulated as a solution to a convex optimization program in which a weighted data divergence is minimized subject to a constraint on the image total variation (TV); a data-derivative fidelity is introduced in the program specifically for effectively suppressing dominant, low-frequency data artifact caused by, e.g. data truncation; and the Chambolle-Pock (CP) algorithm is tailored to reconstruct an image through solving the program. Like any other reconstructions, the optimization-based reconstruction considered depends upon numerous parameters. We elucidate the parameters, illustrate their determination, and demonstrate their impact on the reconstruction. The optimization-based reconstruction, when applied to data collected from swine and patient subjects, yields images with visibly reduced artifacts in contrast to the reference reconstruction, and it also appears to exhibit a high degree of robustness against distinctively different anatomies of imaged subjects and scanning conditions of clinical significance. Knowledge and insights gained in the study may be exploited for aiding in the design of practical reconstructions of truly clinical-application utility.

Abstract:Objective The Study of Relationship between Circular Orbit Cone Beam Reconstruction Error and Cone Angle. Method: Compared with 2-D CT reconstruction, Cone-Beam reconstruction has several advantages, and now it has been implemented more and more widely. Circular orbit based Cone-Beam reconstruction algorithms, which are mathematically simpler and more feasible than other algorithms, are more favorable. However, because of the limitation by circular orbit, we cant obtain all the data in Radon Space which means that the result becomes better with the cone angle decreases. So it is important to study the relationship between the cone angle and the reconstruct quality further. Results: In this paper we obtain a relationship between the error and the cone angle with some approximation. Conclusion: Then we propose some ways to improve circular orbit based Cone-Beam algorithms.
