Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices, let A(G) be an adjacency matrix of G and let P-A(G,lambda) be the characteristic polynomial of A(G). The adjacency spectrum of G consists of eigenvalues of A(G). A graph G is said to be determined by its adjacency spectrum (DS for short) if other graphs with the same adjacency spectrum as G are isomorphic to G. In this paper, we investigate the spectral characterization of unicycle graphs with only two vertices of degree three. We use G(21)(s(1),s(2)) to denote the graph obtained from Q(s(1),s(2)) by identifying its pendant vertex and the vertex of degree two of P-3, where Q(s(1),s(2)) is the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of C-s1 and a pendant vertex of P-s2. We use G(31)(t(1),t(2)) to denote the graph obtained from circle with the vertices v(0)v(1)...v(t1+t2+1) by adding one pendant edge at vertices v(0) and v(t1+1), respectively. It is shown that G(21)(s(1),s(2)) (s(1)not equal 4,6, s(1)>= 3, s(2)>= 3) and G(31)(t(1),t(2)) (t(1)+t(2)not equal 2, t(2)>= t(1)>= 1) are determined by their adjacency spectrum.

Abstract:We characterize the distance-regular Ivanov–Ivanov–Faradjev graph from the spectrum, and construct cospectral graphs of the Johnson graphs, Doubled Odd graphs, Grassmann graphs, Doubled Grassmann graphs, antipodal covers of complete bipartite graphs, and many of the Taylor graphs. We survey the known results on cospectral graphs of the Hamming graphs, and of all distance-regular graphs on at most 70 vertices.
On the $Q$-polynomial property of the full bipartite graph of a Hamming graph

Abstract:The $Q$-polynomial property is an algebraic property of distance-regular graphs, that was introduced by Delsarte in his study of coding theory. Many distance-regular graphs admit the $Q$-polynomial property. Only recently the $Q$-polynomial property has been generalized to graphs that are not necessarily distance-regular. In [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ], it was shown that graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the so-called attenuated space posets are $Q$-polynomial. These posets could be viewed as $q$-analogs of the Hamming posets, which were not studied in [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ]. The main goal of this paper is to fill this gap by showing that the graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the Hamming posets are $Q$-polynomial.

Abstract:We obtain a classification of the completely regular codes with covering radius 1 and the second eigenvalue in the Hamming graphs H(3,q) up to q and intersection array. Due to works of Meyerowitz, Mogilnykh and Valyuzenich, our result completes the classifications of completely regular codes with covering radius 1 and the second eigenvalue in the Hamming graphs H(n,q) for any n and completely regular codes with covering radius 1 in H(3,q).

Abstract:“Which graphs are determined by their spectrum (DS for short)?” is a fundamental question in spectral graph theory. It is generally very hard to show a given graph to be DS and few results about DS graphs are known in literature. In this paper, we consider the above problem in the context of the generalized Q-spectrum. A graph G is said to be determined by the generalized Q-spectrum (DGQS for short) if, for any graph H, H and G have the same Q-spectrum and so do their complements imply that H is isomorphic to G. We give a simple arithmetic condition for a graph being DGQS. More precisely, let G be a graph with adjacency matrix A and degree diagonal matrix D. Let Q=A+D be the signless Laplacian matrix of G, and WQ(G)=[e,Qe,…,Qn−1e] (e is the all-ones vector) be the Q-walk matrix. We show that if detWQ(G)2⌊3n−22⌋ (which is always an integer) is odd and square-free, then G is DGQS.

Abstract:The Hamming graph $H(n,q)$ is defined on the vertex set $[q]^n$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they differ in precisely one coordinate. Alon \cite{Alon} proved that the burning number of $H(n,2)$ is $\lceil\frac n2\rceil+1$. In this note we show that the burning number of $H(n,q)$ is $(1-\frac 1q)n+O(\sqrt{n\log n})$ for fixed $q\geq 2$ and $n\to\infty$.

Spectral Determinants of Almost Equilateral Quantum Graphs

Abstract:Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem of 1847 connects the number of spanning trees of a graph to the spectral determinant of the discrete Laplacian [6]. Recently an analogue was obtained for quantum graphs relating the number of spanning trees to the spectral determinant of a Laplacian acting on functions on a metric graph with standard (Neumann-like) vertex conditions [11]. This result holds for quantum graphs where the edge lengths are close together. A quantum graph where the edge lengths are all equal is called equilateral. Here we consider equilateral graphs where we perturb the length of a single edge (almost equilateral graphs). We analyze the spectral determinant of almost equilateral complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and circulant graphs. This provides a measure of how fast the spectral determinant changes with respect to changes in an edge length. We apply these results to estimate the width of a window of edge lengths where the connection between the number of spanning trees and the spectral determinant can be observed. The results suggest the connection holds for a much wider window of edge lengths than is required in [11].

Abstract:The spectrum of a complex-valued function $f$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$ is the set $\{|u|:u\in \mathbb{Z}_q^n~\mathrm{and}~\widehat{f}(u)\neq 0\}$, where $|u|$ is the Hamming weight of $u$ and $\widehat{f}$ is the Fourier transform of $f$. Let $1\leq d'\leq d\leq n$. In this work, we study Boolean functions on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, whose spectrum is a subset of $\{0\}\cup \{d',\ldots,d\}$. We prove that such functions have at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{d+d'}}{2^{d'}(q-1)^{d'}}$ relevant variables for $d'+d\leq n+1$. In particular, we prove that any Boolean function of degree $d$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, has at most $\frac{dq^{d+1}}{4(q-1)}$ relevant variables. We also show that any equitable 2-partition of the Hamming graph $H(n,q)$, $q\geq 3$, associated with the eigenvalue $n(q-1)-qd$ has at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{2d}}{2^d(q-1)^{d}}$ relevant variables for $d\leq \frac{n+1}{2}$.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph and D(G) be the distance matrix of G. Suppose that λ1(D)⩾λ2(D)⩾⋯⩾λn(D) are the D-eigenvalues of G. In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with λn(D)=-2. Furthermore, we characterize all connected graphs of diameter 2 with exactly three D-eigenvalues when λ1(D) is not an integer. We also conjecture that the complete k-partite graph is determined by its D-spectrum.

Abstract:For an odd integer $n = 2d-1$, let $\mathcal B_d$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of proper $q$-colorings of $V(\mathcal B_d)$ and give asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use various tools including information theory (entropy), Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of M. Jenssen and W. Perkins that combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.

Abstract:The Hamming graph $H(n,q)$ is defined on the vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots,q\}^n$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they differ in precisely one coordinate. Alon proved that for any sequence $v_1,\ldots,v_b$ of $b=\lceil\frac n2\rceil$ vertices of $H(n,2)$, there is a vertex whose distance from $v_i$ is at least $b-i+1$ for all $1\leq i\leq b$. In this note, we prove that for any $q\geq 3$ and any sequence $v_1,\ldots,v_b$ of $b=\lfloor(1-\frac1q)n\rfloor$ vertices of $H(n,q)$, there is a vertex whose distance from $v_i$ is at least $b-i+1$ for all $1\leq i\leq b$. Alon used the Beck--Spencer Lemma which, in turn, was based on the floating variable method introduced by Beck and Fiala who studied combinatorial discrepancies. For our proof, we extend the Beck--Spencer Lemma by using a multicolor version of the floating variable method due to Doerr and Srivastav.

Abstract:Characterizing graphs by their spectra is a fundamental and challenging problem in spectral graph theory, which has received considerable attention in recent years. A major unsolved conjecture in this area is Haemers' conjecture which states that almost all graphs are determined by their spectra. Despite many efforts, little is known about this conjecture so far. In this paper, we shall consider Haemers' conjecture from an algorithmic perspective. Based on some recent developments in the generalized spectral characterizations of graphs, we propose an algorithm to find all possible generalized cospectral mates for a given n -vertex graph G , assuming that G is controllable or almost controllable. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm runs surprisingly fast for most graphs with several dozen vertices. Moreover, we observe in the experiment that most graphs are determined by their generalized spectra, e.g., at least 9945 graphs are determined by their generalized spectra among all randomly generated 10,000 graphs on 50 vertices in one experiment. These experimental results give strong evidence for Haemers' conjecture.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its generalized spectra (DGS for short) if, for any graph $H$, graphs $H$ and $G$ are cospectral with cospectral complements imply that $H$ is isomorphic to $G$. In Wang (J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 122 (2017) 438-451), the author gave a simple method for a graph to be DGS. However, the method does not apply to Eulerian graphs. In this paper, we gave a simple method for a large family of Eulerian graphs to be DGS. Numerical experiments are also presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
On the existence of some completely regular codes in Hamming graphs

Abstract:We solve several first questions in the table of small parameters of completely regular (CR) codes in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$. The most uplifting result is the existence of a $\{13,6,1;1,6,9\}$-CR code in $H(n,2)$, $n\ge 13$. We also establish the non-existence of a $\{11,4;3,6\}$-code and a $\{10,3;4,7\}$-code in $H(12,2)$ and $H(13,2)$. A partition of the complement of the quaternary Hamming code of length~$5$ into $4$-cliques is found, which can be used to construct completely regular codes with covering radius $1$ by known constructions. Additionally we discuss the parameters $\{24,21,10;1,4,12\}$ of a putative completely regular code in $H(24,2)$ and show the nonexistence of such a code in $H(8,4)$. Abstract:In the past decades, graphs that are determined by their spectrum have received more attention, since they have been applied to several fields, such as randomized algorithms, combinatorial optimization problems and machine learning. An important part of spectral graph theory is devoted to determining whether given graphs or classes of graphs are determined by their spectra or not. So, finding and introducing any class of graphs which are determined by their spectra can be an interesting and important problem. A graph is said to be DQS if there is no other non-isomorphic graph with the same signless Laplacian spectrum. For a DQS graph G, we show that G[rK1 [sK2 is DQS under certain conditions, where r, s are natural numbers and K1 and K2 denote the complete graphs on one vertex and two vertices, respectively. Applying these results, some DQS graphs with independent edges and isolated vertices are obtained

On a Characterization of the Grassmann Graphs

Abstract:In 1995, Metsch showed that the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,D)$ of diameter $D\geq 3$ is characterized by its intersection numbers with the following possible exceptions: (-) $n=2D$ or $n=2D+1$, $q\geq 2$; (-) $n=2D+2$ and $q\in \{2,3\}$; (-) $n=2D+3$ and $q=2$. In 2005, Van Dam and Koolen constructed the twisted Grassmann graphs with the same intersection numbers as the Grassmann graphs $J_q(2D+1,D)$, for any prime power $q$ and diameter $D\geq 2$, but they are not isomorphic. We show that the Grassmann graph $J_q(2D,D)$ is characterized by its intersection numbers provided that the diameter $D$ is large enough.

Abstract:Classical Hamming graphs are Cartesian products of complete graphs, and two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. Motivated by connections to unitary Cayley graphs, we consider a generalization where two vertices are adjacent if they have no coordinate in common. Metric dimension of classical Hamming graphs is known asymptotically, but, even in the case of hypercubes, few exact values have been found. In contrast, we determine the metric dimension for the entire diagonal family of $3$-dimensional generalized Hamming graphs. Our approach is constructive and made possible by first characterizing resolving sets in terms of forbidden subgraphs of an auxiliary edge-colored hypergraph.
