Abstract:Abstract. Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a vital role as both a sink for and source of atmospheric carbon. Revegetation of degraded arable land in China is expected to increase soil carbon sequestration, but the role of perennial legumes on soil carbon stocks in semiarid areas has not been quantified. In this study, we assessed the effect of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and two locally adapted forage legumes, bush clover (Lespedeza davurica S.) and milk vetch (Astragalus adsurgens Pall.) on the SOC concentration and SOC stock accumulated annually over a 2 m soil profile. The results showed that the concentration of SOC in the bare soil decreased slightly over the 7 years, while 7 years of legume growth substantially increased the concentration of SOC over the 0–2.0 m soil depth. Over the 7-year growth period the SOC stocks increased by 24.1, 19.9 and 14.6 Mg C ha−1 under the alfalfa, bush clover and milk vetch stands, respectively, and decreased by 4.2 Mg C ha−1 in the bare soil. The sequestration of SOC in the 1–2 m depth of the soil accounted for 79, 68 and 74 % of the SOC sequestered in the 2 m deep soil profile under alfalfa, bush clover and milk vetch, respectively. Conversion of arable land to perennial legume pasture resulted in a significant increase in SOC, particularly at soil depths below 1 m.
Soil Carbon, Nitrogen and Microbial Dynamics of Pasturelands: Impacts of Grazing Intensity and Planting Systems

Abstract:Management intensity critically influences the productivity and sustainability of pasture systems through modifying soil microbes, and soil carbon (C) and nutrient dynamics; however, such effects are not well understood yet in the southeastern USA. We examined the effects of grazing intensity and grass planting system on soil C and nitrogen (N) dynamics, and microbial biomass and respiration in a long-term field experiment in Goldsboro, North Carolina, USA. A split-plot experiment was initiated in 2003 on a highly sandy soil under treatments of two grass planting systems (ryegrass rotation with sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and ryegrass seeding into a perennial bermudagrass stand) at low and high grazing densities. After 4 years of continuous treatments, soil total C and N contents across the 0–30 cm soil profile were 24.7% and 17.5% higher at the high than at the low grazing intensity, likely through promoting plant productivity and C allocation belowground as well as fecal and urinary inputs. Grass planting system effects were significant only at the low grazing intensity, with soil C, N, and microbial biomass and respiration in the top 10 cm being higher under the ryegrass/bermudagrass than under the ryegrass/sorghum-sudangrass hybrid planting systems. These results suggest that effective management could mitigate potential adverse effects of high grazing intensities on soil properties and facilitate sustainability of pastureland.
Medicago Sativa Improves Soil Carbon Sequestration Following Revegetation of Degraded Arable Land in a Semi-Arid Environment on the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Revegetation of degraded arable land with legume pasture has been proposed as an effective approach to improve vegetation conditions and control soil erosion on the Loess Plateau, China. This paper investigated the effects of revegetation on soil carbon pool and its fractions. Three treatments (natural revegetation, Medicago sativa L. introduction and Melilotus suaveolens L. introduction) were applied over 11 years from 2003 to 2013 on the semi-arid Loess Plateau; both aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks as well as its fractions (i.e., the light-fraction organic carbon (LFOC) and heavy fraction organic carbon (HFOC)) were measured. We found that plant aboveground biomass was greater under Melilotus treatment than under Medicago treatment and natural revegetation in the first two years. Afterward, the aboveground biomass was greatest under Medicago treatment. Medicago treatment yielded higher SOC and HFOC stocks than the other two treatments during the experimental period. After revegetation for 10 years, the SOC stocks at the 0-1.5 m soil layer under Medicago treatment were 52.8 and 44.8 Mg ha(-1) higher than those under natural revegetation and Melilotus treatments, respectively. The mean rates of SOC and HFOC sequestration in the top 20 cm of the soil layer under Medicago treatment were 0.27 and 0.23 Mg ha(-1) year in year 11, which were greater than the other two treatments (0.22, 0.15 and 0.07, 0.03 under the two treatments, respectively). Revegetation through introduction of Medicago to degraded arable land can potentially promote SOC accumulation by enhancing the transformation from LFOC to HFOC on the semi-arid Loess Plateau. Abstract:Legume pasture species have been widely used to re-establish vegetation cover and control soil erosion in semiarid degraded ecosystems. Nevertheless, the long-term effects of revegetation on aboveground biomass (AB) and the soil properties under different topographies remain unclear. We conducted a 16-year in situ experiment to evaluate soil properties and biomass dynamics under fallow, sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), in northeast-facing, southeast-facing, and horizontal landscapes from 2003 to 2018. After 16 years of revegetation, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total nitrogen (TN), soil total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were higher in alfalfa fields in the northeast- and southeast-facing landscapes and greater in sweet clover fields in the horizontal landscape alongside soil profiles. In the 0-20 cm, the SOC, TN, and TP concentrations in alfalfa fields increased at rates of 0.322, 0.034, and 0.010 g kg(-1) yr(-1) in the northeast-facing landscape and at rates of 0.189, 0.022, and 0.011 g kg(-1) yr(-1) in the southeast-facing landscape. The SOC, TN, and TP concentrations in sweet clover fields increased at rates of 0.129, 0.023, and 0.009 g kg(-1) yr(-1) in the horizontal. Alfalfa introduction is recommended for northeast-facing landscapes whereas alfalfa and fallow are recommended in southeast-facing landscapes, introduce sweet clover is recommended in a horizontal landscape to improve the soil nutrient concentrations at mid-long time. These results suggest that topography influences vegetation restoration by affecting plant growth and soil nutrient and should be considered during the revegetation process to ensure revegetation success and sustainable land use.

Abstract:This study investigated the distribution of microbial biomass carbon (MB-C), nitrogen (MB-N) and phosphorus (MB-P) in the soil profiles of five different vegetation systems including bare area (Br), Bamboo (Bmb), Chinese Fir (CF), Citrus Orchard (Ctr) and Rice field (Rf). The MB-C levels in the Bmb system were higher than those in the other systems, and it decreased with increasing soil depth in all vegetation systems except the Bmb. The highest MB-N was detected in the top 20 cm of soil for the Bmb and in the 20~40 cm soil layer for the other vegetation systems such as Ctr, CF and Rf. The order of soil MB-P levels from highest to lowest was as follows: Bmb > CF > Ctr > Rf > Br. In all vegetation systems the level of MB-P decreased with increasing soil depth. Experimental results showed that the ratio of MB-C to TOC ranged from 0.75~2.7%, agreeing well with ranges previously reported by many others. Results also indicate that vegetation covers and management practices have a strong impact on the development and distribution of soil microbial properties in the soil profile.
The Effect of Conversion of Cropland to Forage Legumes on Soil Quality in A Semiarid Agroecosystem

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study explores the ecological restoration effects of the conversion of cropland to forage legumes on soil characteristics in the semi-arid Loess Plateau of China. Four types of treatments: fallow (F); alfalfa (Medicago sativa) forage legume (A); sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) forage legume followed by fallow (SF) and erect milkvetch (Astragalus adsurgens) forage legume (E) were used to substitute for spring wheat, the native crop in April 2003 to October 2005. The results indicated that the highest soil water content in various soil layers was observed in F treatment during the whole experimental period, followed by SF treatments. The light fraction of organic C (LFOC) and increase of soil water content in SF was the highest. The above-ground biomass in SF was lower than that in E but higher than that in A and F. The total organic carbon (TOC) content in F and SF was higher than that in the other two treatments. But the total nitrogen (TN) content in F and SF was lower than that in A and E. Over the entire experimental period, the water use efficiency (WUE) of E was higher than that of A, SF and F by 70.02%, 42.05%, and 36.80%, respectively. In conclusion, SF proved to be a better pattern for soil productivity, soil quality, and nutrient cycling under semi-arid conditions.
Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Abstract:Grasslands store approximately one third of the global terrestrial carbon stocks and can act as an important soil carbon sink. Recent studies show that plant diversity increases soil organic carbon (SOC) storage by elevating carbon inputs to belowground biomass and promoting microbial necromass contribution to SOC storage. Climate change affects grassland SOC storage by modifying the processes of plant carbon inputs and microbial catabolism and anabolism. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration can provide low-cost and/or high-carbon-gain options for natural climate solutions in global grasslands. The achievable SOC sequestration potential in global grasslands is 2.3 to 7.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year (CO 2 e year −1 ) for biodiversity restoration, 148 to 699 megatons of CO 2 e year −1 for improved grazing management, and 147 megatons of CO 2 e year −1 for sown legumes in pasturelands.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Purpose</h3><p class="Para">The northeast plain of China is one of three extensive regions with black soil rich in organic matter in the northern hemisphere. The replacement of natural grassland with cropland has resulted in massive loss of soil organic carbon (SOC), causing serious degradation in this region. Therefore, long-term field experiments combined with modelling approaches were used to examine and project effects of different soil management practices on SOC sequestration.</p><h3 class="Heading">Materials and methods</h3><p class="Para">The RothC model was used to simulate SOC stocks, and the straw retention factor was adjusted in our study. Strategies for improving carbon sequestration were evaluated over 30 years under four carbon input scenarios: straw return at the current rate (with a straw retention factor of 40%), complete straw retention (with a straw retention factor of 100%), manuring at the current rate (0.43 Mg C ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>), and manuring at double the current rate (0.86 Mg C ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>).</p><h3 class="Heading">Results and discussion</h3><p class="Para">Simulations with the RothC model indicated that the SOC stock in the 0–20-cm soil profile at the experimental sites has decreased by 64.1% since the 1980s. Moreover, SOC levels appear to have declined rapidly during the first 10 years after site reclamation, with losses ranging from 3.51 to 5.89 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>. Straw return at the current rate was predicted to reduce the SOC sequestration rate by 0.07 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup> in the northern black soils over the 30-year simulation period but cause SOC levels to slowly increase toward equilibrium in the southern black soil region. In simulations with the higher rate of straw retention, SOC stocks rapidly increased (by 0.36–0.53 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup>) across the black soil region over the 30-year period. SOC stocks also increased under the higher rate of manuring, by 0.01–0.19 Mg ha<sup>−1</sup> per year.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">The results suggest that increasing inputs of carbon sources such as straw and manure, together with appropriate tillage, could substantially improve SOC sequestration in the black soil region of northeastern China.</p>

Abstract:The substantial carbon sequestration observed in abandoned farmland assumes a pivotal role in mitigating the impacts of global warming. However, it remains unclear how to effectively manage abandoned farmlands to achieve this goal, especially over the long term, and understand the underlying mechanisms. The introduction of legumes can augment vegetation coverage, mitigate soil erosion, and ameliorate soil quality. A long-term study has been conducted in the semiarid region of the Loess Plateau since 2003, with a focus on revegetation strategies involving the introduction of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis L.), while natural abandonment (fallow) served as a control. In this study, we utilized a physical–chemical combination approach to investigate the carbon sequestration process within the 0–20 cm soil layer. Our results demonstrated that, in comparison to the fallow, alfalfa introduction significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC), light fraction organic carbon (LFOC), and heavy fraction organic carbon (HFOC) concentrations, whereas no significant differences were observed when comparing with sweet clover. The amount and proportion of humic acid (HA) within HFOC were notably higher in alfalfa fields compared to fallow fields. While soil wet-sieved macro-aggregates (>2 mm and 0.25–2 mm) showed no significant difference between alfalfa and fallow fields, soil wet-sieved micro-aggregates were significantly more abundant in alfalfa fields. These wet-sieved micro-aggregates displayed high levels of humification across all fields. As soil wet-sieved aggregate size increased, the proportions of humin (HM) and HA decreased, while the proportion of fulvic acid (FA) increased. We concluded that the formation of HM, HA, and soil wet-sieved micro-aggregates played key roles in promoting long-term soil carbon storage following alfalfa introduction. These findings enhance our understanding of soil ecosystem responses to future climate change and underscore the significance of species selection in restoration processes to effectively mitigate global warming.

Abstract:Pasture-crop rotation has been considered as an efficient agronomical practice to improve soil and water con-servation, develop livestock production, and promote food security. However, the characteristics of soil water restoration and performances of crop yield and water use efficiency (WUE) after conversion of long-term legu-minous pasture into croplands still remain unclear. A field experiment was conducted in China's Loess Plateau to investigate soil water restoration and wheat yields in crop rotation with Italian ryegrass (Festuca perennis Lam.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) converted from three 9-year-old leguminous pastures, viz. milk vetch (Astragalus adsurgens Pall.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and bush clover (Lespedeza davurica S.), and unplanted control (fallow). Soil water in the alfalfa treatment gradually recovered from up to down compared to the fallow treatment (control) during cultivation phase. After one year of rotation, the recovery levels of soil water in the three pasture-crop rotation systems at 0-500 cm soil depth were 97.1%, 95.5% and 94.2%, respectively, compared to the fallow treatment. The legume treatments significantly enhanced the crop yield (35.6%-64.5%), aboveground biomass (28.7%-59.4%) and WUE (60%-68.3%) of winter wheat compared with fallow. These results imply that the concerns about soil desiccation from long-term alfalfa was resolvable after long-term alfalfa converted into cropland in the rainfed farming area of Loess Plateau. The results also suggest that legume pasture-crop rotation can facilitate achieving a sustainable development of rainfed farming.
Differential effects of legume species on the recovery of soil microbial communities, and carbon and nitrogen contents, in abandoned fields of the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Plant-soil interactions are known to influence a wide range of ecosystem-level functions. Moreover, the recovery of these functions is of importance for the successful restoration of soils that have been degraded through intensive and/or inappropriate land use. Here, we assessed the effect of planting treatments commonly used to accelerate rates of grassland restoration, namely introduction of different legume species Medicago sativa, Astragalus adsurgens, Melilotus suaveolens, on the recovery of soil microbial communities and carbon and nitrogen contents in abandoned fields of the Loess Plateau, China. The results showed effects were species-specific, and either positive, neutral or negative depending on the measure and time-scale. All legumes increased basal respiration and metabolic quotient and had a positive effect on activity and functional diversity of the soil microbial community, measured using Biolog EcoPlate. However, soil under Astragalus adsurgens had the highest activity and functional diversity relative to the other treatments. Soil carbon and nitrogen content and microbial biomass were effectively restored in 3-5 years by introducing Medicago sativa and Astragalus adsurgens into early abandoned fields. Soil carbon and nitrogen content were retarded in 3-5 years and microbial biomass was retarded in the fifth year by introducing Melilotus suaveolens. Overall, the restoration practices of planting legumes can significantly affect soil carbon and nitrogen contents, and the biomass, activity, and functional diversity of soil microbial community. Therefore, we propose certain legume species could be used to accelerate ecological restoration of degraded soils, hence assist in the protection and preservation of the environment.
Persistent soil carbon enhanced in Mollisols by well-managed grasslands but not annual grain or dairy forage cropping systems

Abstract:Significance Soil organic carbon (C) responses to agricultural management are highly uncertain, hindering our ability to assess the C sequestration potential of croplands and develop sound policies to mitigate climate change while enhancing other ecosystem services. Combining experimental evidence from a long-term field experiment and a meta-analysis of published literature, we show that the accrual of mineral-associated soil C in intensively managed Mollisols was only achieved by managing ruminant grazing on perennial grasslands. Although modifying dominant grain-based systems with reduced tillage, diversified rotations, and legumes and manure additions improve soil health metrics—which is critical to soil, nutrient, and water conservation—they are unlikely to enhance persistent forms of soil C in Mollisols to help drawdown atmospheric C and stabilize climate.

Soil respiration versus vegetation degradation under the influence of three grazing regimes in the Songnen Plain

Abstract:Understanding the effects of ongoing vegetation degradation (due to grazing pressure) on soil respiration provides a basis for managing grazing to improve sustainability of grassland ecosystems in the context of climate change. In a 2‐year field experiment in a meadow ecosystem, vegetation, soil properties, and root and microbial respiration of 2 dominant communities (Leymus chinensis and Chloris virgata) were examined along a vegetation degradation sequence caused by varying grazing pressures. Aboveground biomass, belowground net primary productivity, litter mass, and microbial biomass carbon significantly decreased as ground cover was reduced. For 2 community types, from light degradation to severe degradation (SD), soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations decreased by 14.1–15.4%, 10.9–12.3%, and 10.7–11.9%, respectively; and soil bulk density and pH increased by 9.1–9.3% and 4.6–5.2%, respectively. Over 2 years, from light degradation to SD in 2 communities, annual mean root and microbial respiration rate significantly decreased by 35.9–43.5% and 28–34.4%, respectively. Root respiration was more sensitive to vegetation degradation in C. virgata communities compared with L. chinensis communities. However, temperature sensitivity (Q10) for root and microbial respiration did not significantly change as vegetation degraded. These results indicated that (a) vegetation degradation could drive significant soil degradation in this meadow; (b) vegetation degradation restrained soil CO2 efflux, but more largely decreased biomass carbon input into soil, which finally reduced SOC concentration; and (c) vegetation degradation would not change the response of soil CO2 efflux to climate change. To increase SOC storage and maintain grassland sustainability, grazing exclusion was suggested for restoring vegetation in SD sites, with a stocking rate < 2 sheep·ha−1 or rotational grazing recommended. Finally, overseeding with L. chinensis and legumes should enhance forage and livestock production, and soil carbon and nitrogen sequestration, thus preserving grassland sustainability in this meadow ecosystem.

Our objectives were (1) to quantify the dependency of SOC stocks on vegetation type; (2) to identify in which aggregate sizes and chemical forms the SOC was stored; and (3) to determine which vegetation type was the most effective at sequestering SOC.MethodsThe studied vegetation types were shrubland CK16 (16-year-old Caragana korshinskii Kom.), shrubland CK26 (26-year-old C. korshinskii Kom.), shrubland AS (Armeniaca sibirica Lam.), natural grassland and artificial pasture. We investigated SOC stocks and measured soil carbon, in <0.25, 0.25–1, 1–2, 2–5 and 5–8 mm sized aggregates, and carbon fractions [humus (HS-C), humic acid (HA-C), fulvic acid (FA-C)] from CK shrublands, natural grassland and cropland.ResultsThe SOC stocks were the greatest for CK shrublands and natural grassland. Compared with cropland, shrubland CK caused increases in >2 mm sized aggregate C stocks. The 1–2, 2–5, 5–8 mm size aggregate C stocks were the highest in the natural grassland. HS-C was 1.4, 3.1, and 4.1 Mg ha−1 greater in shrubland CK16, shrubland CK26, and natural grassland, respectively, than in cropland.ConclusionsConversion to C. korshinskii shrublands and protection of natural grassland should be promoted to improve the contribution of vegetation to SOC sequestration.

Abstract:Abstract Forestation is regarded as an effective strategy for increasing terrestrial carbon sequestration. However, its carbon sink potential remains uncertain due to the scarcity of large-scale sampling data and limited knowledge of the linkage between plant and soil C dynamics. Here, we conduct a large-scale survey of 163 control plots and 614 forested plots involving 25304 trees and 11700 soil samples in northern China to fill this knowledge gap. We find that forestation in northern China contributes a significant carbon sink (913.19 ± 47.58 Tg C), 74% of which is stored in biomass and 26% in soil organic carbon. Further analysis reveals that the biomass carbon sink increases initially but then decreases as soil nitrogen increases, while soil organic carbon significantly decreases in nitrogen-rich soils. These results highlight the importance of incorporating plant and soil interactions, modulated by nitrogen supply in the calculation and modelling of current and future carbon sink potential.

Abstract:Because of overcultivation in the semiarid Loess Plateau during the past half century, soil erosion has become a serious problem in maintaining a sustainable ecosystem. To find an effective way to overcome soil erosion, we investigated the changes of soil pH, soil bulk density, soil aggregate distribution and stability, and soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and available phosphorus associated with soil aggregates when cropland was converted to grassland on the semiarid Loess Plateau of China. In 2003, a typical cropland was planted with (i) perennial legume species alfalfa (Medicago sativa Linn.) at a density of 22.5 kg ha(-1), (ii) the biennial legume species sweetclover (Melilotus of. cianalis Linn.) at a density of 11.3 kg ha(-1), and (iii) natural regeneration. By 2008, the soil pH and soil bulk density significantly decreased in all treatments. The number of soil aggregates in the 2 to 1-mm and 1 to 0.5-mm categories and the stability of aggregates significantly increased (P < 0.05) in all treatments. In different size categories of soil aggregates, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen increased, but available phosphorus significantly decreased in all treatments. Soil total phosphorus was not significantly different between treatments. Overall, soil physical properties significantly improved after the cropland was converted to grassland in all treatments. The natural regeneration treatment showed the best improvement.

Abstract:Effects of litter return of Leymus chinensis grassland on soil microbial biomass carbon of the Songnen sandy land were investigated. Characteristics of soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) from subhumid area of L. chinensis grassland ecosystem at different content of litter returns (0, 200 and 400 g/m2) and soil depths (0-10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40 cm) were evaluated. Results showed that the content of SMBC increased with the increase in litter return at the same soil depth. The content was highest (426.17 mg/kg) at 400 g/m2 litter return, which was 1.61 and 1.50 times higher than at 0 and 200 g/m2, respectively at the depth of 0-10 cm, and decreased sharply at 10-40 cm. These results showed that increasing the amount of litter return and suitable management measures can effectively enhance the carbon content of soil microbial biomass and improve soil microbial activity and fertility to ensure the balance of grassland ecosystem. Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) modelling is a useful approach to assess the impact of nutrient management on carbon sequestration. RothC was parameterized and evaluated with two long‐term experiments comparing different fertilizer treatments in north (Zhengzhou) and northeast (Gongzhuling) China. Four nutrient application treatments were used: no fertilizer (Control), mineral nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium fertilizers (NPK), NPK mineral fertilizer plus manure (NPKM), and NPK mineral fertilizer plus straw return (NPKS). The comparison between simulated and observed data showed that the model can adequately simulate SOC contents in the Control, NPK and NPKM treatments but overestimated in the NPKS treatment at both sites. By changing the value of decomposable plant material:resistant plant material (DPM:RPM) ratio from the default value to 3.35 for the NPKS treatment at the Zhengzhou site, dynamics of simulated SOC agreed with measured values. A pseudo‐parameter, straw retention factor was introduced to adjust the amount of straw incorporated into soils. Using the inverse simulation method and the modified value of the ratio, the best‐fitted value was 0.24 for the NPKS treatment at the Gongzhuling site. This result indicated that retaining straw on the soil surface makes less contribution to carbon sequestration than if it is incorporated. With this modification for straw, the model produced reasonable predictions for the two sites. The model was run for another 30 years with the modified parameter values and current average climatic conditions for different fertilizer treatments at both sites. The results suggested that the NPK application plus the addition of manure or straw would be better management practices for carbon sequestration.
