Abstract:Enhancement of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) storage in degraded ecosystems is of great significance for improving soil quality and mitigating climate change. Grazing exclusion is an effective management practice to restore degraded ecosystems in drylands. However, the spatio-temporal dynamics and regulating factors of SOC and N sequestration in degraded ecosystems following grazing exclusion has not been clearly explored. Using synthesized data from 38 peer-reviewed publications, we investigated the rates of SOC (RSOC) and soil total N (RN) stock changes and their controlling factors following grazing exclusion in the Loess Plateau of China. Grazing exclusion significantly increased SOC and total N stock in most sites. The average RSOC was 0.57, 0.64 and 0.7 Mg ha-1yr- 1 and the average RN was 0.033, 0.031 and 0.036 Mg ha-1yr- 1 at 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm soil depths, respectively. RSOC showed a Poisson function relation with the duration of grazing exclusion. RSOC and RN did not significantly change with mean annual precipitation, but they were negatively correlated with mean annual temperature at 0-20 cm. RSOC at each soil depth was positively correlated with altitude. The strong coupling relationship between RSOC and RN resulted in no significant change in the ratio of SOC to total N between grazing exclusion and grazing sites over time. The results show that altitude, age of GE and initial SOC and N contents rather than precipitation controls these processes in the Loess Plateau. Grazing exclusion promotes SOC and N sequestrations more than 30 years in the degraded lands of the Loess Plateau. The inherent increase of soil N would be beneficial to soil carbon sequestration during the recovery process.
High potential of stable carbon sequestration in phytoliths of China's grasslands

Abstract:Phytolith carbon (C) sequestration plays a key role in mitigating global climate change at a centennial to millennial time scale. However, previous estimates of phytolith-occluded carbon (PhytOC) storage and potential in China's grasslands have large uncertainties mainly due to multiple data sources. This contributes to the uncertainty in predicting long-term C sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems using Earth System Models. In this study, we carried out an intensive field investigation (79 sites, 237 soil profiles [0-100 cm], and 61 vegetation assessments) to quantify PhytOC storage in China's grasslands and to better explore the biogeographical patterns and influencing factors. Generally, PhytOC production flux and soil PhytOC density in both the Tibetan Plateau and the Inner Mongolian Plateau had a decreasing trend from the Northeast to the Southwest. The aboveground PhytOC production rate in China's grassland was 0.48 × 106 t CO2 a-1 , and the soil PhytOC storage was 383 × 106 t CO2 . About 45% of soil PhytOC was stored in the deep soil layers (50-100 cm), highlighting the importance of deep soil layers for C stock assessments. Importantly, the Tibetan Plateau had the greatest contribution (more than 70%) to the PhytOC storage in China's grasslands. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that altitude and soil texture significantly influenced the spatial distribution of soil PhytOC, explaining 78.1% of the total variation. Soil phytolith turnover time in China's grasslands was mainly controlled by climatic conditions, with the turnover time on the Tibetan Plateau being significantly longer than that on the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Our results offer more accurate estimates of the potential for phytolith C sequestration from ecological restoration projects in degraded grassland ecosystems. These estimates are essential to parameterizing and validating global C models.

Optimizing grazing exclusion duration for carbon sequestration in grasslands: Incorporating temporal heterogeneity of aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon

Abstract:Grasslands account for approximately one-third of the global terrestrial carbon stocks. However, a limited understanding of the impact of grazing exclusion on carbon storage in grassland ecosystems hinders progress towards restoring overgrazed grasslands and promoting carbon sequestration. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to investigate the effects of grazing exclusion on aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) in four grasslands: alpine grasslands (AP), tropical savannas (TS), temperate subhumid grasslands (TG), and a semi-desert steppe (SD). Our meta-analysis indicated that grazing exclusion significantly enhanced carbon sequestration in grassland ecosystems, and the benefits of carbon sequestration were most pronounced in the AP, followed by the TG, SD, and TS. Grazing exclusion duration (DUR) was a significant factor associated with the response of aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) to grazing exclusion. Moreover, the relationships between AGB and DUR were nonlinear, with existence thresholds of 18, 21, 12, 19, and 23 years in global grasslands (ALL), AP, TS, TG, and SD, respectively. However, the relationship between SOC and DUR was linear, with SOC continuing to increase as DUR increased (up to 40 years). The multi-objective optimization indicated that the optimal duration of grazing exclusion for grassland carbon sequestration was 18-20, 21-23, 12-14, 19-21, and 23-25 years for ALL, AP, TS, TG, and SD, respectively. Our study contributes to the enhancement of grazing management and offers better options for increasing carbon sequestration in grasslands.

Abstract:Abstract Anthropogenic activities profoundly influence carbon sequestration in the Eurasian Steppe. In particular, grazing has been identified as having a major effect on carbon sequestration. However, the extent to which grazing affects regional patterns or carbon sequestration is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the impact of regional grazing on grassland carbon sequestration using the Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS) and the Shiyomi grazing model. Model performances were validated against the results from field measurements and eddy covariance (EC) sites. Model outputs showed that in 2008, the regional net primary productivity (NPP) was 79.5 g C m −2 , and the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was −6.5 g C m −2 , characterizing the region as a weak carbon source. The Mongol Steppe (MS) was identified as a carbon sink, whereas the Kazakh Steppe (KS) was either carbon neutral or a weak carbon source. The spatial patterns of grazing density are divergent between the MS and the KS. In the MS, livestock was mainly distributed in China with relatively good management, while in the KS livestock was mainly concentrated in the southern countries (especially Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) with harsh environments and poor management. The consumption percentages of NPP in Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were 5.3, 3.3 and 1.2%, respectively, whereas the percentages in other countries were lower than 1%. Correspondingly, grazing consumption contributed to the carbon sources of Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan by 11.6, 6.3 and 4.3%, respectively, while it weakened the carbon sink in Inner Mongolia, China and Mongolia by 1.6 and 0.5%. This regional pattern should be affected by different sub-regional characteristics, e.g., the continuous degradation of grassland in the southern part of the KS and the restoration of grassland in Inner Mongolia, China.
Grazing exclusion alters soil microbial respiration, root respiration and the soil carbon balance in grasslands of the Loess Plateau, northern China

Abstract:Grassland ecosystems are a significant component of the global carbon cycle. To better understand how grazing affects the carbon cycle of grasslands, soil microbial respiration (Rm) and root respiration (Rr), which are the main soil respiration components, we investigated with a trenching method in grazed grasslands (GG) and fenced (FG) grasslands on the Loess Plateau, northern China in 2008. The annual carbon balance in the two grasslands were also assessed and compared. After exclusion of grazing for about 3 years, soil organic carbon (SOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in the surface soil increased significantly (P < 0.05), resulting in the increase of Rm in most seasons. Exclusion of grazing did not change the diurnal variations of Rm, Rr and total soil respiration (Rt). Grazing decreased the temperature dependence of Rm. The annual accumulations of Rm were 165.9 g C m−2 in FG and 116.1 g C m−2 in GG. On most dates, Rr in FG was higher than in GG, but significant differences were only found in some seasons. The seasonal average value of Rr was 0.374 µmol carbon dioxide (CO2) m−2 s−1 in FG, 21.0% higher than that in GG (0.309 µmol CO2 m−2 s−1). Net primary production (NPP) in FG and GG were 243.6 and 205.8 g C m−2, respectively. The annual C balance resulted in net C sequestrations of 77.7 and 89.7 g C m−2 in FG and GG, respectively, suggesting that the grassland in this region may act as a C sink both under grazing and fencing.

Soil Aggregate Fraction-Based 14 C Analysis and Its Application in the Study of Soil Organic Carbon Turnover under Forests of Different Ages

Abstract:There still exist uncertainties in the trend, magnitude and efficiency of carbon sequestration with regard to the changes in soil organic carbon （SOC） pools after afforestation. In this study, SOC turnover times of the meadow steppe and planted forests at Saihanba Forest Station of Hebei Province, China are estimated by means of the radiocarbon （ 14C） method. Our results show that the SOC turnover times can be as long as from 70 to 250 years. After planting the Pinus sylvestri var. mongolica in the Leymus chinensis meadow steppe, the turnover times of organic carbon in both bulk samples and soil aggregate fractions of the topsoils are decreased with an increase of the stand age. Such a lowering of the turnover time would cause an increase in soil CO2 flux, implying that afforestation of grassland may reduce the capacity of topsoil to sequestrate organic carbon. Combined stable isotope and 14C analyses on soil aggregate fractions suggest that there are different responses to afforestation of grassland between young and old carbon pools in topsoils. In the young and middle-age planted forests, the proportion of CO 2 emission from the older soil carbon pool shows an increasing trend. But in the mature planted forest, its proportion tends to decline, indicating that the stand age may influence the soil carbon sequestration mechanism. The CO2 emission from the topsoils estimated using the 14 C method is relatively low compared to those by other methods and may be caused by the partial isolation of the young carbon component from the soil aggregates. For more accurate estimation of CO2 flux, future studies should therefore employ improved methodology for more effective separation of different soil carbon components before isotope analyses.
Recovery through proper grazing exclusion promotes the carbon cycle and increases carbon sequestration in semiarid steppe

Abstract:Grazing exclusion changes soil physical-chemical characteristics, rapidly affects microbial community composition and function, and alters biogeochemical processes, e.g., carbon (C) cycle, over time. However, the temporal dynamics of CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake during grassland restoration chronosequences remain poorly understood. We investigated soil CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake, the genes related to CO 2 and CH 4 production and reduction ( cbbL , cbbM , chiA , and pmoA ), and associated microbial communities under different durations of grazing exclusion (0, 7, 16, 25, and 38 years) to reveal the mechanisms and potential of soil CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake in a semi-arid steppe. The results showed that a proper exclusion period could significantly improve soil physical-chemical conditions, vegetation community, and soil C-cycling. The abundance of C-cycling functional genes ( cbbL , cbbM , chiA and pmoA ), CH 4 uptake and CO 2 emission rates showed a single-peak pattern with increasing duration of grazing exclusion, peaking at 16 years and then decreasing in the period between 25 and 38 years, indicating that the effect of exclusion weakened when the exclusion period was too long. The changes in C-cycling functional genes and microbial communities are primarily influenced by aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and are associated with CO 2 , CH 4 , soil water content (SWC), and soil organic carbon (SOC). Structural equation modeling showed that increases in SOC content and pmoA abundance caused by an increase in ANPP accelerated CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake rates, respectively. Our results provide valuable insights into the critical role of grazing exclusion in promoting grassland restoration and carbon sequestration, and have potential implications for sustainable land management practices.

Abstract:Quantifying the carbon dynamics in arid and semi-arid ecosystems is a key issue in determining the global carbon budget. Carbon turnover time (CTT) and carbon uptake are the key indicators that determine the C dynamics and the potential C sequestration, but it has not been well quantified in a specific ecosystem. Our study combined a field inventory in a desert steppe ecosystem with data synthesis and the Terrestrial Ecosystem Regional model (TECO-R) for desert steppes to invert the key parameters of the ecosystem's carbon cycle. The average CTT in the leaf, root, and soil carbon pools (to a depth of 50 cm) and for the whole ecosystem was 1.43, 10.1, 76.96, and 37.65 years, respectively. The study area's net primary productivity (NPP) averaged 131.93 g C m−2 yr−1 from 2000 to 2018 based on the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford approach, and the ecosystem C uptake averaged 28.86 g C m−2 yr−1, driven by an increasing NPP trend. The whole-ecosystem CTT (CTTE) increased significantly, by about 6 years per 25-mm increase in precipitation, 0.45° increase in latitude, 1000-g increase in SOC, and 50-g C m−2 yr−1 increase in NPP. The threshold temperature for CTT in the desert steppe was around 6 °C. CTTE was significantly negatively correlated with temperature above this temperature, but below this value is the opposite. However, the pattern of ecosystem potential C uptake was affected by climate, NPP, and the intensity of human activities, with no clearly dominant factor. These analyses of the desert steppe's carbon cycle will help to improve the assessment of dryland carbon dynamics and global carbon budgets.

Abstract:Soil represents the largest terrestrial organic carbon pool. To address global climate change, it is essential to explore the soil organic carbon storage patterns and their controlling factors. We investigated the soil organic carbon density (SOCD) in 48 grassland sites along the Eurasian steppe eastern transect (ESET) region, which covers the Inner Mongolia grassland subregion and Mongolia grasslands subregion. Specifically, we analyzed the SOCD in the top 30 cm soil layer and its relationships with climatic variables, soil texture, grazing intensity and community biomass productivity. The results showed that the average SOCD of the ESET was 4.74 kg/m2, and the SOCD of the Inner Mongolia grassland subregion (4.11 kg/m2) was significantly lower than that of the Mongolia grassland subregion (5.79 kg/m2). Significant negative relationships were found between the SOCD and the mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual precipitation (MAP) and grazing intensity in the ESET region. The MAT and grazing intensity were identified as the major factors influencing the SOCD in the ESET region; the MAP and MAT were the major factors influencing the SOCD in the Inner Mongolia grassland subregion; and the MAT and soil pH were the major factors influencing the SOCD in the Mongolia grassland subregion.

Abstract:Soil carbon (C) is one of the most abundant C pools in terrestrial ecosystems, and its dynamics is highly dependent on soil depth. Grazing exclusion (GE) has proven to be a promising approach for enhancing C sequestration; however, the comprehensive analysis on the depth distribution of soil C and driving factors of soil C dynamics under GE are still lacking. This study collected data comprising 563 paired observations from 75 papers to analyze the distribution characteristics and the driving factors of soil organic carbon (SOC) changes with soil depth under GE in Chinese grasslands. The results showed that GE positively contributed to soil C sequestration, and the change range of SOC were higher (47.70%) in the subsoil (>20 cm) than in the topsoil layer (0–20 cm; 29.24%). Furthermore, SOC was influenced by GE duration, exhibiting an increasing trend and reaching its highest value at 13–15 years of GE, then remaining stable or slightly decreasing thereafter. Boosted regression trees (BRTs) showed that climatic factors were the primary determinants of SOC changes; however, the key drivers of SOC varied across different soil depths. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) was the key driver of topsoil C dynamics, accounting for 32.7% of the variance. In contrast, mean annual temperature (MAT) regulated the response of subsoil SOC to GE, explaining 48.23% of the variance. In addition, plant biomass was a significant factor influencing the depth distribution of soil C under GE, and its effect on SOC decreased with increasing soil depth. Our study provides evidence that the subsoil has a greater potential for C sequestration than the topsoil layer after GE, and future studies should consider deep soil C dynamics to accurately assess C sequestration in grassland ecosystems.

Impact of Grassland Degradation on Soil Phytolith Carbon Sequestration in Inner Mongolian Steppe of China

Abstract:Grasslands play an important role in the terrestrial biogeochemical carbon (C) cycle and partly mitigate climate change through C occlusion within phytoliths. Grassland degradation has a significant influence on the coupled biogeochemical cycles of C and silicon in the Inner Mongolian steppe of China, but there are few reports about the impact of grassland degradation on phytolith C sequestration in the steppe, the main grassland in northern China. Twelve sampling sites were chosen in the Xilingol League. Soil samples (0–50cm) were collected from grasslands of four different degradation degrees to investigate the impact of grassland degradation on the soil phytolith and phytolith-occluded C (PhytOC) accumulation using a mass-balance approach. Soil phytolith storages were 12.97±2.15, 15.90±0.65, 14.35±0.79 and 13.22±1.07tha−1 in non-degraded, lightly degraded, moderately degraded and seriously degraded grasslands, respectively. The corresponding storages of soil PhytOC were 0.11±0.02, 0.16±0.02, 0.12±0.01 and 0.07±0.01tha−1, respectively. The observed significant differences in soil phytoliths and PhytOC among grasslands of different degradation degrees indicate that grassland degradation influenced the phytolith and PhytOC accumulation in grassland soils. Grazing and harvesting are likely the major factors affecting soil phytolith and PhytOC storages through reducing the litterfall returning fluxes. Our preliminary findings imply that grassland restoration could be a promising way to increase long-term phytolith C sequestration through maximizing plant PhytOC production fluxes and soil PhytOC accumulation in degraded grasslands.
The Mechanism Underlying Grazing Shaping Stoichiometry of Plant Community on a Grassland of Guizhou Subtropical Plateau

Abstract:Livestock grazing is a traditional and major use of grassland in China subtropics. However, plant stoichiometry and how it was affected by grazing in these ecosystems have been poorly explored. Here, the responses in plant nutrition and stoichiometry as well as soil nutrition and stoichiometry under representative grazing intensities (i.e., moderate grazing and heavy grazing) compared with no-grazing were characterized, the drivers of plant stoichiometry were explored in a subtropical artificial grassland, SW China. Wilcoxon test showed that grazing intensity significantly changed the response of soil OC, TN, AN, AP, AK, pH, OC: TN, AN: AP, AN: AK, AP: AK, and AP: AK. Grazing intensity changed the response in N, ASH, EE, ADF, P, N: P, N: P, N: Ca and P: Ca of plant. Path analysis showed the effect of grazing intensity on the stoichiometric ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus in plant community was achieved through the removal of herbivores. Our research provides some mechanistic understanding of grazing management of subtropical grassland, and also provides new insights and useful reference for the protection and utilization of grassland in Guizhou Plateau.
Effects of grazing exclusion on plant productivity and soil carbon, nitrogen storage in alpine meadows in northern Tibet, China

Abstract:Grazing exclusion is widely adopted in restoring degraded alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. However, its effectiveness remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of grazing exclusion on plant productivity, species diversity and soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (STN) storage along a transect spanning from east to west of alpine meadows in northern Tibet, China. After six years of grazing exclusion, plant cover, aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), SOC and STN were increased, but species diversity indices declined. The enhancement of AGB and SOC caused by grazing exclusion was correlated positively with mean annual precipitation (MAP). Grazing exclusion led to remarkable biomass increase of sedge species, especially Kobresia pygmaea, whereas decrease of biomass in forbs and no obvious change in grass, leguminous and noxious species. Root biomass was concentrated in the near surface layer (10 cm) after grazing exclusion. The effects of grazing exclusion on SOC storage were confined to shallow soil layer in sites with lower MAP. It is indicated that grazing exclusion is an effective measure to increase forage production and enhance soil carbon sequestration in the studied region. The effect is more efficient in sites with higher precipitation. However, the results revealed a tradeoff between vegetation restoration and ecological biodiversity. Therefore, carbon pools recover more quickly than plant biodiversity in the alpine meadows. We suggest that grazing exclusion should be combined with other measures to reconcile grassland restoration and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:Moderate grazing has been widely proven to improve ecosystem functioning and have profound effects on the carbon cycling and storage in grassland ecosystems, which highly depend on grazing duration and grassland type. However, the effects of moderate grazing durations on carbon sequestration with different grassland types over broad geographic scales across China remain underexplored in the context of striving for carbon neutrality. Here, we explored the probably different responses of carbon sequestration to moderate grazing duration for temperate and alpine grasslands based on 129 published literatures regarding the China's grasslands. The results showed the soil organic carbon stocks were significantly increased during short-term (<5 years) grazing duration, while significantly decreased during medium- (5–10 years) and long-term (≥ 10 years) grazing durations in temperate grasslands. However, the soil organic carbon stocks were significantly decreased during short-term grazing duration, while showed no significant changes during medium- and long-term grazing durations in alpine grasslands. The changes in soil organic stock were significantly positively correlated with the changes in belowground biomass, root:shoot, and microbial biomass carbon ( P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the temperate grasslands change from carbon sink to carbon source with moderate grazing duration increasing, while the alpine grasslands present an opposite change pattern from carbon source to carbon sink, regulated by grazing-altered carbon input and microbial activities. Our study might have significant implications for future sustainable management practices for carbon sequestration of China's grasslands.

Abstract:To understand how nutrient cycling and sequestration are influenced by different grazing periods, the C:N:P stoichiometry features of the plant-soil interface in the desert steppe were measured and evaluated. The 5-year seasonal grazing experiment employed four grazing period treatments: traditional time of grazing (TG), early termination of grazing (EG), delayed start of grazing (DG), and delayed start and early termination of grazing (DEG). Additionally, fenced off desert steppe served as the control. The grazing periods each had a differing impact on the C:N:P stoichiometry in both plant functional group and soil depth comparisons. Compared to the EG, DG, and DEG treatments, the TG treatment had a more significant impact on the C, N, and P pools of grass, as well as the C:P and N:P ratios of forbs, but had a reduced effect on the C:P and N:P ratios of legumes. In contrast to plants, the DG treatment exhibited greater advantages in increasing C pools within the 0-40 cm soil layer. Furthermore, in the 10-20 cm soil layer, the C:P and N:P ratios under the EG treatment were significantly higher, ranging from 8.88% to 53.41% and 72.34%-121.79%, respectively, compared to the other treatments (TG, DG, and DGE). The primary drivers of the C, N, and P pools during different grazing periods were above-ground biomass (AGB) and litter biomass (LB). Both lowering the plant C:P and N:P ratios and considerably raising the plant P pool during different grazing periods greatly weakened the P limitation of the desert steppe environment. It is predicted that delayed start grazing might be a management strategy for long-term ecosystem sustainability, as it regulates above-ground nutrient allocation and has a positive effect on soil C and N pools.
Spatial Patterns of Soil Organic Carbon Fractions and Their Control in Temperate Grasslands of China

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions (light fraction organic carbon, LFOC; heavy fraction organic carbon, HFOC), which have different sensitivities to environmental change, have been widely used as an effective way to assess the soil carbon pool. To explore the spatial patterns of SOC, its fractions (LFOC, HFOC), and their influential factors in temperate grasslands of China, 16 study sites were selected without significant human disturbance along temperature and precipitation gradients in Inner Mongolia, China. These study sites covered three community types: meadow steppe, typical steppe, and desert steppe. Soil samples were collected from five discrete depth intervals (0–10cm, 10–20cm, 20–40cm, 40–60cm, and 60–100cm) for each study site in July 2013, the peak period for plant growth. The variations in SOC, LFOC, HFOC, and their major influential factors were analyzed in the three community types and at five soil depths. The effects of abiotic and biotic factors on SOC and its fractions were evaluated. The coefficient of variation for LFOC was lower than that for HFOC among the different grassland types and higher among the different vertical depths. The LFOC in the 0–10cm soil layer was significantly higher than that in the substratum, whereas HFOC did not differ significantly among the different soil depths. LFOC/SOC in meadow steppe, typical steppe, and desert steppe (7.34%, 8.29%, and 9.41%, respectively) appeared to be lower when compared with previous studies (3%–48%). Both LFOC and HFOC were significantly positively correlated with mean annual precipitation (MAP), soil moisture, aboveground biomass, root biomass, soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), clay content, soil total nitrogen content (STN), and soil total phosphorus content (STP), and negatively correlated with mean annual temperature (MAT), soil temperature, and soil pH. Among these factors, root biomass, MBC, STN, and STP were the most important influential factors for LFOC, whereas soil moisture, MAP, STN, and STP were the most important for HFOC. STN had a greater influence on LFOC than on HFOC, whereas STP had a greater influence on HFOC than on LFOC. In conclusion, labile C occurred in the surface soil and was closely correlated with biotic factors, whereas steady fraction C did not significantly change with soil depth and was more closely correlated with abiotic factors in temperate grasslands. Our results emphasize the importance of STN and STP in affecting the variation in SOC fractions, and could provide a theoretical basis for accurately predicting SOC stabilization and its response to global climate change.
Soil organic carbon in particle-size fractions under three grassland types in Inner Mongolia, China

Abstract:PurposeTransferring CO2 to soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important carbon sequestration mechanism that may mitigate global climate change. Grasslands can preserve 10–30% of total SOC stock. This study investigated the contribution of different soil particle-size fractions to SOC sequestration in grasslands, which play an important role for stabilization of SOC.Materials and methodsSoil layers at 0–10, 10–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm were sampled from meadow steppe, typical steppe and desert steppe in Inner Mongolia, northern China in July and August, 2016. Bulk soils were fractionated by wet-sieving method to investigate SOC stock in different particle-size fractions. SOC was determined with ElementarVario MAX CNS analyzer after removing soil inorganic C.Results and discussionThe SOC stock in 0–60 cm depth was 163.0 Mg C ha−1 in typical steppe soils, 127.3 Mg C ha−1 in meadow steppe and 44.4 Mg C ha−1 in desert steppe. The silt (2–53 μm) and clay (< 2 μm) fractions accounted for 62.2 and 19.2% in meadow steppe, 35.3 and 12.7% in typical steppe, 12.2 and 6.6% in desert steppe of total soil mass. The SOC stock in silt and clay fractions accounted for 59.8 and 32.0% of total SOC stock in meadow steppe, 58.9 and 19.8% in typical steppe, and 43.9 and 28.2% in desert steppe, respectively. The SOC concentration and stock were positively correlated with mean annual precipitation (MAP) and negatively correlated with mean annual temperature (MAT). Our study demonstrated that climatic factors and soil texture are main reasons for the difference of SOC stocks among three grassland types.ConclusionsThe distribution of soil particle-size fraction and its associated organic C showed distinct variations under three grassland types in Inner Mongolia. Management practices, such as changing grazing intensity in three grassland types, are important for the sustainable use of grasslands.

Abstract:The effect of livestock grazing on grassland degradation and the resulting impact on soil carbon concentration is an important factor in carbon estimation. We addressed this issue using field observations and laboratory analysis of samples from Tibetan grassland. Based on the field measurements, we investigated the soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) under two contrasting degradation states: lightly or non-degraded grasslands (LDG) and heavily degraded grasslands (HDG). We assessed their relationships with environmental factors using data collected from 99 sites across Northern Tibet during 2011–2012. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model and one-way ANOVA. The results showed that: (1) SOC concentration decreased and SIC concentration increased following grassland degradation, especially at soil depths in the range of 0–10 cm ( P < 0.05); (2) the major environmental factors affecting SOC and SIC were soil pH and plant biomass; (3) spatially, the SOC density increased with the mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation, whereas SIC exhibited the opposite trend; (4) the SOC density increased at first and then decreased with increasing grazing intensity, with an opposite trend in SIC; and (5) soil carbon storage in this region was 0.14 Pg smaller in the HDG than in the LDG. This study suggests that grassland degradation can significantly affect the vertical distribution and storage of SOC and SIC. The carbon sequestration capacity of the top 100 cm of soil in Northern Tibet was estimated as 0.14 Pg.

Abstract:Abstract Globally, livestock grazing is an important management factor influencing soil degradation, soil health and carbon (C) stocks of grassland ecosystems. However, the effects of grassland types, grazing intensity and grazing duration on C stocks are unclear across large geographic scales. To provide a more comprehensive assessment of how grazing drives ecosystem C stocks in grasslands, we compiled and analyzed data from 306 studies featuring four grassland types across China: desert steppes, typical steppes, meadow steppes and alpine steppes. Light grazing was the best management practice for desert steppes (< 2 sheep ha −1 ) and typical steppes (3 to 4 sheep ha −1 ), whereas medium grazing pressure was optimal for meadow steppes (5 to 6 sheep ha −1 ) and alpine steppes (7 to 8 sheep ha −1 ) leading to the highest ecosystem C stocks under grazing. Plant biomass (desert steppes) and soil C stocks (meadow steppes) increased under light or medium grazing, confirming the ‘ intermediate disturbance hypothesis ’. Heavy grazing decreased all C stocks regardless of grassland ecosystem types, approximately 1.4 Mg ha −1 per year for the whole ecosystem. The regrowth and regeneration of grasslands in response to grazing intensity (i.e., grazing optimization ) depended on grassland types and grazing duration. In conclusion, grassland grazing is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, proper management (light or medium grazing) can maintain and even increase C stocks above- and belowground, and increase the harvested livestock products from grasslands. On the other hand, human-induced overgrazing can lead to rapid degradation of vegetation and soils, resulting in significant carbon loss and requiring long-term recovery. Grazing regimes (i.e., intensity and duration applied) must consider specific grassland characteristics to ensure stable productivity rates and optimal impacts on ecosystem C stocks. Abstract:This study chose meadow steppe, typical steppe, desert steppe, three types of steppes, a total of 13 sampling sites in northern temperate steppe of China, and determined phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) composition of soil microbes. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling method was used to analyze the soil microbial community composition. The results showed that microbial community structure significantly differed among three types of steppes. Then, the soil microbial community composition data with 10 kinds of environmental factors were combined to conduct redundancy analysis. 79.87% of the variation of soil microbial community composition was explained. Soil moisture content, soil total carbon, soil total nitrogen could affect the soil microbial community composition of meadow steppe. Soil microbial community composition of typical steppe was closely related to light carbon and nitrogen component of soil. Mean average temperature and soil pH value significantly influenced the soil microbial community composition of desert steppe.
