Abstract:We report a hierarchical optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) network that supports 10-, 40-, and 160-Gb/s data rates with the same bandwidth efficiency. The data rates can be upgraded without hardware modification in the OADM. This hierarchical OADM network is equipped with high capacity (1.6 Tb/s) for traffic growth, while providing different granularities for diverse bandwidth requirements as fine as 12.5 GHz in optical domain. We investigate the transmission penalty through the waveband OADMs, and compare the performance between all-through traffic and add-drop traffic of neighboring wavebands at 40-Gb/s rate.

Abstract:In this paper we study the optimization issues of ring networks employing novel parallel multi-granularity hierarchical optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs). In particular, we attempt to minimize the number of control elements for the off-line case. We present an integer linear programming formulation to obtain the lower bound in optimization, and propose an efficient heuristic algorithm called global bandwidth resource assignment that is suitable for the design of large-scale OADM networks.

Abstract:The performance of an optical switching network is mainly determined by its core node structure. An improved optical packet switching (OPS) node structure based on recirculation optical fiber delay line (FDL) and feedback tunable wavelength converter (TWC), and a specific scheduling algorithm for the node structure are presented. This switching structure supports both point-to-point and point-to-multi-points broadcasting transmission with superior capacity expansion performance. Its superiority in packet loss probability is proved by simulation.

Abstract:All-optical switching technology without optical-electrical-optical(OEO)conversion creates transparency in an optical network and greatly reduces the complexity and cost of the node.Multi-granularity optical cross-connect reduces the scale and complexity of the switching matrix—which indicates the direction of the wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical network.With the development of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM),bandwidth-variable optical node technology has become the focus of attention.This paper introduces the switching architecture of optical cross-connect(OXC)and multi-granularity optical cross-connect based on wavelength.It also introduces the node switching architecture of OFDM and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing(SCFDM).An experiments with bandwidth-variable reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer(ROADM)and OXC is presented.The node in the proposed optical switching has Pbit/s capability.

Abstract:All-optical networks (AON) provide large bandwidth, high-speed switching, and quality of service (QoS). However, the emergence of recent applications generating flexible traffic demands affects AON resource utilization and QoS management. These concerns are handled by AON using core nodes with large wavelength converters (WC) and fiber delay line (FDL) spaces, resulting in a high cost of implementation and operation. This paper proposes a hybrid core node architecture, upgrading existing nodes with limited effective modification to minimize physical topology costs. This hybrid architecture increases WC and FDL availability and reduces wavelength utilization according to traffic behavior. These new node functions are enabled using an advanced algorithm integrating a novel cost formulation merging WC and FDL with lightpath deflection (LD). This algorithm activates resource availabilities using a flexible QoS scheme considering the required and real-time traffic loss and blocking delay. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach optimizes AON resources while guaranteeing required traffic demands compared to the existing techniques.

Abstract:Efforts of realizing all optical packet switching have been overwhelming in the past decade. While optical packet switching remains an attractive switching paradigm in the long run, technical challenges prohibit it from becoming a practical solution for the ever-growing bandwidth hunger during the next few years. Finding a technically viable way to meet the increasing capacity requirement with good scalability and flexibility becomes a clear pursue for the community. Hybrid packet and circuit switching is considered to be one promising technique in realizing high performance switching at low cost and efficient energy consumption, by taking advantage of both packet switching and circuit switching. In this paper, we review existing work in hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We discuss the key technical challenges in realizing hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We further introduce our ongoing efforts in building a seamlessly transformable packet/circuit-switching node with hybrid optical and electronic components. With in-band signaling and electronic line card processing, the node is capable of operation in 100% packet switching, 100% circuit switching, or anything in between. The implemented node is believed to be a good research testbed for packet/circuit-switching co-existence in a single node.

Abstract:We study the design issues of a node in multi-granularity all-optic network based on a proposed dynamic multigranularity including coarse granularity (i.e., fiber and band) and fine granularity (i.e., wavelength) traffic model. An optimization design plan is proposed by analyzing the associated parameters of MG-OXC architecture in detail and optimizing the configuration of them. The proposed optimization design rules can significantly reduce the node complexity and improve the blocking performance of arriving requests, which lead to smaller device size and lower cost in all-optical networks.

Abstract:We present a scalable and novel modular optical metro core node architecture employing photonic WDM integrated switches. Multi-degree switching ROADM nodes are used at the metro-core level, while access network is constituted by low-cost ROADM nodes. Photonic integrated switches have been designed as the building blocks to realize this modular metro node architectures, namely photonic WDM space switches with express and add/drop ports, photonic integrated WSS aggregation/disaggregation functions for merging/dropping the network traffic, and photonic integrated multi-cast switch (MCS), to achieve, together with bandwidth variable transceivers aggregators, multi-Terabits/second operation per link. In particular, photonic WDM space switches and photonic integrated WSS are designed as building blocks to realize this novel modular metro node architectures. Moreover, dynamic re-configurable metro-access nodes based on low-cost photonic integrated mini-ROADMs will be presented. The lossless photonic WDM switches are based on InP technology and employ semiconductor optical amplifiers as on-chip gain element and for fast switching. The photonic WDM circuits allow to switch multiple format data signals in wavelength, space and time for full flexibility, scalability of the interconnected network elements, as well as capacity. Applications will be discussed and experimental results will be reported. Finally advances in compact photonic integrated InP switch design using the InP generic technology will be discussed.

Abstract:In Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) with flexible bandwidth allocation, the blocking probability is high because of spectral contention. Similar to the functionality of wavelength conversion in Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) networks, waveband conversion has been proposed to solve spectral contention in EONs. In this paper, we discuss the design of node architectures for an EON with waveband conversion. Four node architectures with shared Tuneable Waveband Converters (TWBCs) are proposed, and their blocking performances are evaluated by simulation. Simulation results show that the blocking probability of a node is significantly improved by waveband conversion. The sharing efficiency of waveband converters is also investigated. Simulation results show that at the same blocking rate, the node architecture with converters shared per node can save more than 20% waveband converters compared with that of the one with converters shared per link.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:With the Internet Protocol (IP) being the dominant protocol for new optical network services, there is increasing pressure to optimize the network infrastructure and protocols for IP traffic. This paper presents a technology for constructing a novel node architecture for IP over photonic systems. WDM network has been launched by the concept of wavelength routing. The principle is that high-speed data flows, which consist of many time-division multiplexed channels, are associated with specific optical wavelengths. Thus, they are routed through the optical network by means of their wavelengths. Therefore, wavelength routing consents the realization of OXCs working in an efficient way.

Abstract:From the basic optical packet switch (OPS) node architectures, this paper presents an improved one, the shared feedback and output buffer (SFOB) architecture, which combines the feedback fiber delay line (FDL) buffer and the shared FDL buffer together. The SFOB architecture does not take each FDL as an independent unit but connects two different FDLs respectively from the shared and feedback buffer groups as one FDL if necessary. The simulation has been carried out to study the packet loss probability of the SFOB architecture under random network traffic load. It is shown that with the same amount of FDLs the proposed architecture has better performance than the traditional shared-memory optical packet (SMOP) switch architecture.

Abstract:Mixed-line-rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with discrete channel spacing generalize the fixed grid WDM networks and can support mixed-electronic-optical grooming efficiently. For optical transport networks with beyond 100 Gbps containers, optical layer grooming is needed to take full advantage of variable grid spacing, as well as to improve spectrum utilization. In this work, we propose two new node architectures, Optical Grooming Capable Optical Cross Connect (OGC-OXC) and Optical Grooming Capable Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OGC-ROADM), which are capable of optical layer grooming for optical transport networks beyond 100 Gbps and will be generally called Optical Grooming Capable WDM (OGC-WDM) networks. For OGC-WDM, we investigate dimensioning of the number of fibres per link and add/drop degree per wavelength at each node and propose two new heuristic algorithms, First-Fit and Weighted-Fit. Also, we analyse the expected spectrum utilization for mixed-electronic-optical grooming in OGC-WDM, which can also reduce the required resources. Simulation studies show the following: For dimensioning of OGC-WDM, in comparison to the First-Fit, the Weighted-Fit heuristic requires 25% less number of fibres and 60% less add/drop degree. Also, if the size of topology is large and range of normalized distance of requests is large, Weighted-Fit requires smaller scale of add/drop components, and it has 50% more fibres to add/drop degree ratio, and 50% less number of fibres and add/drop degree product, the latter of which is crucial in scaling OGC-ROADM nodes. We also find that the execution speed of First-Fit is ten times faster than that of Weighted-Fit. In addition, the mixed-electronic-optical grooming can reduce required resources. With OGC-OXC node architecture, if no extra fibre is allowed, the overhead of grid allocation reaches 33%, and if one extra fibre is allowed, the overhead of grid allocation reaches 12.6%. However, if electronic grooming is allowed, the corresponding overhead of grid allocation reaches 18.75% and 7.49% respectively. To control the cost of OGC-ROADM, cyclic arrayed wave-guide grating and optical cross connect are used and if traffic load is light, the size of the two can be reduced by 50% with smaller cyclic arrayed wave-guide grating.

Design and Performance Analysis of an Ip Wavelength Routing Network

Abstract:The network architecture where each node integrates an IP router and an OXC (optical cross-connect) is an attractive paradigm for the next generation optical Internet. IP wavelength routing or POW (packet over wavelengths) is based on this kind of architecture. The goal of this architecture is to switch as much traffic as possible directly by means of OXCs, because IP forwarding is relatively expensive and causes large end-to-end delay by comparison. Based on analyzing the problems and shortcomings of the previous node structure, a novel node structure is proposed to overcome the problems-encountered by the previous scheme. Then two IP switching protocols, IFMP (Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol) and GSMP (General Switch Management Protocol), are extended to support IP wavelength routing networks. Finally, the performance of an IP wavelength routing network is analyzed with self-similar network traffic model. The simulated results show that the higher the network traffic self-similar degree, the higher switching gain the network gets.
