Abstract:In this paper we propose to use comb switches to simplify Banyan-type on-chip wavelength-routed passive photonic networks constructed by micro-ring resonator (MRR)-based optical switches. Compared with general wavelength-routed optical networks, the number of MRRs used in the simplified network is significantly reduced.

Abstract:Optical interconnect can achieve a substantial increase in the number of nodes and switching capability for data centers, by virtue of their low power consumption and high bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a single-wavelength switch architecture based on two-stage AWGR for data centers. Then the single-wavelength design is extended to support multi-wavelength, which has higher scalability but lower hardware complexity and power consumption. We prove that the single wavelength architecture is internal strictly non-blocking. When the incoming traffic is externally blocked, a buffer allocation algorithm is designed to allocate feedforward and feedback FDL for the blocked packets. Based on the simulation results, the proposed switch can provide higher throughput, lower average latency, and a 0 out-of-order ratio compared to existing solutions.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:Photonic network-on-chip (NoC) architectures are emerging as a new paradigm to interconnect a large number of processing cores at chip level, meeting the pressing demand for extremely high bandwidth and low power consumption. Optical routers, which are typically composed of silicon waveguides and optical switches, play a key role in an on-chip photonic interconnection network. In this paper, we propose a micro-ring-resonator (MRR)-based, scalable, and non-blocking passive optical router design, namely the generic wavelength-routed optical router (GWOR). We first introduce the four 4 x 4 GWOR router structures and then show how to construct GWORs of larger sizes by using the proposed 4 x 4 GWORs as the primitive building blocks. The number of MRRs used in the proposed GWOR is the least among the existing passive router designs for the same network size. In addition, we show that the power loss experienced on GWORs is lower than other comparative designs. Furthermore, to improve the bandwidth and fault tolerance capability of the GWORs, the redundant GWOR (RGWOR) structure is presented. RGWOR can provide multiple routing paths between each pair of input-output ports by cascading different types of GWORs.

Abstract:Photonic Networks-on-Chip (NoC) is considered as a promising candidate to interconnect a large number of processing cores. The heart of a photonic NoC is the on chip photonic interconnection network which is composed of silicon waveguides and optical routers. In this paper, we propose a scalable and non-blocking passive optical router design using micro-ring resonators (MRRs), namely the generic wavelength-routed optical router (GWOR). We first introduce a 4×4 GWOR router structure and then show how to construct larger size GWORs using 4×4 GWOR as the basic building block The wavelength assignment schemes for any size GWORs are also derived. For N×N GWOR, N-l input wavelengths are needed and iV-2 different types of MRRs are used. The analysis shows that 4×4 GWOR uses the least number of MMRs and has the least power loss compared with existing router designs.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel micro-ring-resonator-assisted structure as an optical switch. This device couples two outputs of a 1x2 power splitter into a micro-ring resonator (MRR). The double-beam interference will occur in the MRR. If the phase difference between the beams and the coupling coefficients of MRR are set properly, the device can switch the light by applying phase shift on MRR. High extinction ratio or low crosstalk can be achieved, even if the modulation additional loss is large.

Abstract:We have proposed and investigated micro-ring add-drop switch and M-Z interferometric element for on-chip router applications based on silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The proposed silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide possesses lower propagation loss compared with conventional plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguide. By employing this low loss waveguide, it is found that the proposed ring add-drop switch possesses high transmission efficiency (-1 dB), and the extinction ratio can be as high as 30 dB at 1.556 mu m. In addition, the transmission efficiency of drop port for the M-Z interferometric element can be -1.15 dB at 1.55 mu m. The designed elements are essential for the on-chip router in optical interconnect.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a four-port wavelength-selective optical router on silicon-on-insulator wafer for photonic networks-on-chip. The router consists of four basic operation blocks. Each is constructed by one microring resonator (MRR) based add-drop filter rather than the traditional two microrings based 2 x 2 optical crossbar. It can provide multiwavelength routing for each path to increase the aggregate data transmission bandwidth. The possible 12 I/O routing paths are experimentally observed in the transmission spectra and each of them has the ability to route four group wavelengths simultaneously in the measured spectral range. The device has a small footprint (similar to 78 x 100 mu m(2)) and low power consumption (6.58 mW).

Abstract:We demonstrate a disaggregated optically-connected memory (OCM) architecture that supports dynamic resource allocation. Our proposed architecture utilizes a hitless wavelength-selective switch (WSS) based on silicon photonic (SiP) micro-ring resonators (MRRs) embedded with an equal-armed Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which permits a hitless rerouting of multi-wavelength signals. Error-free operation is achieved between a CPU node and two remote memory nodes using silicon photonic switch fabrics, showing the potential of integrating the photonic switched optically connected memory pools to the large-scale data centers and high performance computing (HPC) systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical switch array based on the topology of Butterfly by using dual-microring resonators which can be used in the ultra-compact network. The proposed switch is composed of 12 basic switch elements tuned by thermo-optic (TO) effect, which can build links freely without any blocking. Due to the advantages of microring resonators, the footprint switch array is smaller than 0.2 mm(2). The optical structure can complete 4- and 8-ports signal routing. It shows a large bandwidth over 50GHz, thereby performing well under condition of high-speed data transmission.

Abstract:Optical switches are desired in telecom and datacom as an upgrade to electrical ones for lower power consumption and expenses while improving bandwidth and network transparency. Compact, integrated optical switches are attractive thanks to their scalability, readiness for mass production, and robustness against mechanical disturbances. The basic unit relies mostly on a microring resonator or a Mach–Zehnder interferometer for binary "bar" and "cross" switching. Such single-mode structures are often wavelength / polarization dependent, sensitive to phase errors and loss-prone. Furthermore, when they are cascaded to a network, the number of control units grows quickly with the port count, causing high complexity in electronic wiring and drive circuit integration. Herein, we propose a new switching method by thermo-optic waveguide lens. Essentially, this multimode waveguide forms a square law medium by a pair of heater electrodes and focuses light within a chip by robust 1 × 1 imaging. A 1 × 24 basic switch is demonstrated with 32 electrodes and only two are biased at a time for a chosen output. By two-level cascading, the switch expands to 576 ports and only four electrodes are needed for one path. The chips are fabricated on wafer scale in a low-budget laboratory without resorting to foundries. Yet, the performance goes beyond state of the art for low insertion loss, low wavelength dependence and low polarization dependence. This work provides an original, alternative, and practical route to construct large-scale optical switches, enabling broad applications in telecom, datacom and photonic computing.

Abstract:Photonic integrated switches that are both space and wavelength selective are a highly promising technology for data-intensive applications as they benefit from multi-dimensional manipulation of optical signals. However, scaling these switches normally poses stringent challenges such as increased fabrication complexity and control difficulties, due to the growing number of switching elements. In this work, we propose a novel dilated crosspoint topology, which efficiently handles both space and wavelength selective switching, while reducing the required switching element count by an order of magnitude compared to reported designs. To the best of our knowledge, our design requires the fewest switching elements for an equivalent routing paths number and it fully cancels the first-order in-band crosstalk. We demonstrate such an ultra-compact space-and-wavelength-selective switch (SWSS) at a scale of 4{\times}4{\times}4{\lambda} on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Experimental results reveal that the switch achieves an insertion loss ranging from 2.3 dB to 8.6 dB and crosstalk levels in between -35.3 dB and -59.7 dB. The add-drop microring-resonators (MRRs) are equipped with micro-heaters, exhibiting a rise and fall time of 46 {\mu}s and 0.33 {\mu}s, respectively. These performance characteristics highlight the switch's ultra-low element count and crosstalk with low insertion loss, making it a promising candidate for advanced data center applications.

Abstract:Recently, spatial-division-multiplexing based on weakly coupled multicore or few-mode fibers has been proposed for short-reach switching scenarios, in which spatial mode can be used as an independent switching dimension. Fully connected cross-connections (OXC) converting all spatial modes and wavelengths into one-dimensional switching ports and followed by huge switching array can provide nonblocking switching, but the hardware implementation is very complex and expensive. In this paper, we propose a layered OXC structure consisting of intramode sub-OXCs and intermode switching bridges. Then, a scattered-spectrum-scan intramode-first routing and spectrum allocation (SSS-IMF-RSA) scheme is designed, in which only a few discrete spectrum segments instead of the whole spectrum should be scanned for spectrum allocation. The switching will be performed preferentially for the wavelength dimension because of mature switching capability and less searching time. We show by simulation that the proposed layered OXC with the SSS-IMF-RSA scheme can achieve similar blocking performance to fully connected OXCs with up to 76.1% hardware scale reduction and 93% searching time reduction for network accommodation. The proposed OXC and RSA scheme greatly decrease the requirements for the port number of WSS and enable components reuse to achieve smooth evolution.

Abstract:All-optical switching technology without optical-electrical-optical(OEO)conversion creates transparency in an optical network and greatly reduces the complexity and cost of the node.Multi-granularity optical cross-connect reduces the scale and complexity of the switching matrix—which indicates the direction of the wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)optical network.With the development of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM),bandwidth-variable optical node technology has become the focus of attention.This paper introduces the switching architecture of optical cross-connect(OXC)and multi-granularity optical cross-connect based on wavelength.It also introduces the node switching architecture of OFDM and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing(SCFDM).An experiments with bandwidth-variable reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer(ROADM)and OXC is presented.The node in the proposed optical switching has Pbit/s capability.

Abstract:A tunable comb generator (TCG) by cascading a single phase modulator (PM) with two identical intensity modulators (IMs) is proposed for the scalable and reconfigurable generation of flat optical comb. Detailed theoretical analysis is performed to find out the optimized condition for flat optical comb generation using the proposed TCG and the scalability of the generated optical comb is also analyzed under the optimized condition. An experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility of the TCG and the experimental results agree well with the theoretical prediction. The reconfigurability and stability of the obtained optical comb are discussed as well in the experiment. After that, the obtained optical comb is utilized as the optical source for a wavelength-division multiplexed radio-over-fiber (WDM-RoF) system and a hybrid WDM orthogonal frequency-division multiple access passive optical network (WDM-OFDMA-PON). Two corresponding experimental demonstrations are presented to verify the feasibility of employing the obtained flat optical comb as the WDM optical source, respectively. In the WDM-RoF system, 17 WDM channels each carrying 16×5Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data have been up-converted to 10GHz simultaneously. In the hybrid WDM-OFDMA-PON, 17-channel OFDM-WDM double-sideband (DSB) signal achieving 10.85Gb/s traffic per channel is successfully transmitted for both wired baseband OFDM access and wireless 10GHz OFDM access.
