Abstract:We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.

In the present paper, we focus on two applications of the variational principle: 1. We study the ergodic problem of the stationary equation via the solution semigroup. Abstract:Assume H = H(x, p, u) with (x, p) is an element of T*M and u is an element of S, is smooth and satisfies Tonelli conditions in p, Lipschitz continuity condition in u, where M is a compact connected smooth manifold without boundary. We find a compact interval C such that equationH(x, partial differential xu(x), u(x)) = chas solutions if and only if c is an element of C. We also study the long-time behavior of the unique viscosity solution uc of partial differential tu(x, t) + H(x, partial differential xu(x, t), u(x, t)) = c, u(x, 0) = phi(x) is an element of C(M, R).If c is an element of C, uc is bounded by a constant independent of c and Lipschitz with respect to the argument x with a Lipschitz constant independent of c and phi. If c is an element of/ C, then the long-time average of uc can be characterized by a function c 7 -> rho(c) which admits a modulus of continuity. We obtain these results by analyzing properties of a kind of one-parameter semigroups of operators. All the aforementioned results show the fundamental difference between Hamilton Jacobi equations with Hamiltonians H(x, p, u) and over line H(x, p).

Abstract:In this paper, we get a Liouville type theorem for the special Lagrangian equation with a certain ’convexity’ condition, where Warren–Yuan first studied the condition in (Comm Partial Differ Equ 33(4–6):922–932, 2008). Based on Warren–Yuan’s work, our strategy is to show a global Hessian estimate of solutions via the Neumann–Poincar é inequality on special Lagrangian graphs, and mean value inequality for superharmonic functions on these graphs, where we need geometric measure theory. Moreover, we derive interior Hessian estimates on the gradient of the solutions to the equation with this ’convexity’ condition or with supercritical phase.

Abstract:In the present article, we provide analytic foundation of the following nonlinear elliptic system, called the \emph{Hamiltonian-perturbed contact instanton equation}, $$ (du - X_H \otimes \gamma)^{\pi(0,1)} = 0, \quad d(e^{g_{H, u}}u^*(\lambda + H \otimes \gamma)\circ j) = 0 $$ associated to a contact triad $(M,\lambda,J)$ and contact Hamiltonian $H$ and its boundary value problem under the Legendrian boundary condition. (1) We identify the correct choice of the action functional for perturbed contact Hamiltonian trajectories which provides a gradient structure for the system and derive its first variation formula. (2) We identify the correct choice of the energy for the bubbling analysis for the finite energy solutions for the equation. (3) We develop elliptic regularity theory for the solution, called \emph{perturbed contact instantons}: We first establish a global $W^{2,2}$ bound by the Hamiltonian calculus and the harmonic theory of the vector-valued one form $d_Hu : = du - X_H(u)\otimes \gamma$ and its relevant Weitzenböck formulae utilizing the contact triad connection of the contact triad $(M,\lambda, J)$. Then we establish $C^{k,\alpha}$-estimates by an alternating boot-strap argument between the $\pi$-component of $d_Hu$ and the Reeb-component of $d_Hu$. Along the way, we also establish the boundary regularity theorem of $W^{1,4}$-weak solutions of perturbed contact instanton equation under the weak Legendrian boundary condition. (4) Based on this regularity theory, we prove an asymptotic $C^\infty$ convergence result at a puncture under the hypothesis of finite energy.

Let $$u_\varepsilon ^-:M\rightarrow \mathbb {R}$$ be the viscosity solution of the parametrized contact Hamilton–Jacobi equation $$\begin{aligned} H(x,d_x u_\varepsilon ^-(x),\varepsilon u_\varepsilon ^-(x))=c(H), \end{aligned}$$ with c(H) being the Mañé Critical Value. Abstract:This paper deals with: (1) the generalized additive eigenvalue problem \[ H(x,u(x),Du(x))=c, \quad x\in M, \] where the unknown is a pair $(c,u)$ of a constant $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and a function $u$ on $M$ for which $u$ is a backward weak KAM solution (or equivalently, viscosity solution) of the above equation; (2) the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for \[ w_{t}(x,t)+H(x, w(x,t), Dw(x,t))=c,\quad (x,t)\in M\times(0,+\infty). \] We assume $H=H(x,u,p)$ satisfies Tonelli conditions in the argument $p\in T^*_xM$ and the uniform Lipschitz condition in the argument $u\in\mathbb{R}$. First, we provide three necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of backward weak KAM solutions of the stationary equation for a given $c\in \mathbb{R}$. Second, we analyse the structure of the set $\mathfrak{C}$ of all real numbers $c$'s for which the stationary equation admits backward weak KAM solutions. Third, the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the evolutionary equation is studied. Implicit Lax-Oleinik semigroups $\{T^\pm_t\}_{t\geqslant 0}$ play an essential role in this paper. The most important novelty in this work is to reveal several new aspects of existence and long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the above equations without monotonicity assumptions $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\geqslant 0$ (or, $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\leqslant 0$): the propeties of the operator $T^+_t\circ T^-_t$ is used to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of viscosity solutions of the stationary equation; three constants are introduced to analyse the structure of $\mathfrak{C}$; the information of $w$ in finite time partly determines the long-time behavior of $w$.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a study of a history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality arising in contact mechanics. The contact problem concerns the deformation of a viscoelastic body with long memory, subject to a general friction law on one part of the boundary and a frictionless Signorini condition on another part of the boundary. The solution existence and uniqueness of the history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality based on a Lagrange multiplier approach are proved. Then, a fully discrete scheme is introduced and studied. The trapezoidal rule is used to approximate the integral in the history-dependent operator. For the spatial discretization, the linear finite elements are used to discretize the displacement field, and dual basis functions are used in the approximation of the Lagrange multiplier. Optimal order error estimates are derived for the displacement and the Lagrange multiplier under appropriate solution regularity assumptions. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical prediction of the convergence orders.

Abstract:We study a multi-objective variational problem of Herglotz' type with cooperative linear coupling. We established the associated Euler-Lagrange equations and the characteristic system for cooperative weakly coupled systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We also established the relation of the value functions of this variational problem with the viscosity solutions of cooperative weakly coupled systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Comparing to the previous work in stochastic frame, this approach affords a pure deterministic explanation of this problem under more general conditions. We also showed this approach is valid for general linearly coupling matrix for short time.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following Hamilton-Jacobi equation with initial condition: ∂_tu(x,t)+H(x,t,u(x,t),∂_xu(x,t))=0, u(x,0)=ϕ(x). Under some assumptions on the convexity of H(x,t,u,p) w.r.t. p, we develop a dynamical approach to viscosity solutions and show that there exists an intrinsic connection between viscosity solutions and certain minimal characteristics.

Abstract:We apply Jacobi's Last Multiplier theory to construct the non-standard Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures for the Levinson–Smith equations satisfying the Chiellini integrability condition. Then after a brief exposition of the contact geometry, we explore its connection with the non-standard Hamiltonian structures. We present the formulation of the Levinson–Smith equation in terms of General Equation for the Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC) method and also study the gradient-type flow. We give a geometric formulation of GENERIC and apply this to general Levinson–Smith equations.

By introducing a solution semigroup, we provide a representation formula of the viscosity solution of the evolutionary equation. As its applications, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the viscosity solutions of the stationary equations. Moreover, we prove a new comparison theorem depending on the neighborhood of the projected Aubry set essentially, which is different from the one for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation independent of $u$.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to present some results about viscosity subsolutions of the contact Hamiltonian-Jacobi equations on connected, closed manifold M H(x,∂_x u,u)= 0, x∈ M. Based on implicit variational principles introduced in [12,14], we focus on the monotonicity of the solution semigroups on viscosity subsolutions and the positive invariance of the epigraph for viscosity subsolutions. Besides, we show a similar consequence for strict viscosity subsolutions on M.

Abstract:A geometric setup for constrained variational calculus is presented. The analysis deals with the study of the extremals of an action functional defined on piecewise differentiable curves, subject to differentiable, non-holonomic constraints. Special attention is paid to the tensorial aspects of the theory. As far as the kinematical foundations are concerned, a fully covariant scheme is developed through the introduction of the concept of infinitesimal control. The standard classification of the extremals into normal and abnormal ones is discussed, pointing out the existence of an algebraic algorithm assigning to each admissible curve a corresponding abnormality index, related to the co-rank of a suitable linear map. Attention is then shifted to the study of the first variation of the action functional. The analysis includes a revisitation of Pontryagin's equations and of the Lagrange multipliers method, as well as a reformulation of Pontryagin's algorithm in hamiltonian terms. The analysis is completed by a general result, concerning the existence of finite deformations with fixed endpoints.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study the well-posedness of a class of evolutionary variational–hemivariational inequalities coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation in Banach spaces. The proof is based on an iterative approximation scheme showing that the problem has a unique mild solution. In addition, we established the continuity of the flow map with respect to the initial data. Under the general framework, we consider two new applications for modeling of frictional contact for viscoelastic materials. In the first application, we consider Coulomb's friction with normal compliance, and in the second, normal damped response. The structure of the friction coefficient [math] is new with motivation from geophysical applications in earth sciences with dependence on an external state variable [math] and the slip rate [math].
