Abstract:We establish an implicit variational principle for the equations of the contact flow generated by the Hamiltonian $H(x,u,p)$ with respect to the contact 1-form $\alpha=du-pdx$ under Tonelli and Osgood growth assumptions. In the present paper, we focus on two applications of the variational principle: 1. We provide a representation formula for the solution semigroup of the evolutionary equation w(t)(x, t) + H(x, w(x, t), w(x)(x, t)) = 0; 2. We study the ergodic problem of the stationary equation via the solution semigroup. More precisely, we find pairs (u, c) with u is an element of C(M, R) and c is an element of R which, in the viscosity sense, satisfy the stationary partial differential equation H(x, u(x), u(x)(x)) = c. Abstract:The objective of this paper is to present some results about viscosity subsolutions of the contact Hamiltonian-Jacobi equations on connected, closed manifold M H(x,∂_x u,u)= 0, x∈ M. Based on implicit variational principles introduced in [12,14], we focus on the monotonicity of the solution semigroups on viscosity subsolutions and the positive invariance of the epigraph for viscosity subsolutions. Abstract:Assume H = H(x, p, u) with (x, p) is an element of T*M and u is an element of S, is smooth and satisfies Tonelli conditions in p, Lipschitz continuity condition in u, where M is a compact connected smooth manifold without boundary. We find a compact interval C such that equationH(x, partial differential xu(x), u(x)) = chas solutions if and only if c is an element of C. We also study the long-time behavior of the unique viscosity solution uc of partial differential tu(x, t) + H(x, partial differential xu(x, t), u(x, t)) = c, u(x, 0) = phi(x) is an element of C(M, R).If c is an element of C, uc is bounded by a constant independent of c and Lipschitz with respect to the argument x with a Lipschitz constant independent of c and phi. If c is an element of/ C, then the long-time average of uc can be characterized by a function c 7 -> rho(c) which admits a modulus of continuity. We obtain these results by analyzing properties of a kind of one-parameter semigroups of operators. All the aforementioned results show the fundamental difference between Hamilton Jacobi equations with Hamiltonians H(x, p, u) and over line H(x, p).

Abstract:Motivated by recent developments in Hamiltonian variational principles, Hamiltonian variational integrators, and their applications such as to optimization and control, we present a new Type II variational approach for Hamiltonian systems, based on a virtual work principle that enforces the Type II boundary conditions through a combination of essential and natural boundary conditions; particularly, this approach allows us to define this variational principle intrinsically on manifolds. We first develop this variational principle on vector spaces and subsequently extend it to parallelizable manifolds, general manifolds, as well as to the infinite-dimensional setting. Furthermore, we provide a review of variational principles for Hamiltonian systems in various settings as well as their applications.

Abstract:A class of evolutionary variational–hemivariational inequalities with a convex constraint is studied in this paper. An inequality in this class involves a first-order derivative and a history-dependent operator. Existence and uniqueness of a solution to the inequality is established by the Rothe method, in which the first-order temporal derivative is approximated by backward Euler’s formula, and the history-dependent operator is approximated by a modified left endpoint rule. The proof of the result relies on basic results in functional analysis only, and it does not require the notion of pseudomonotone operators and abstract surjectivity results for such operators, used in other papers on the Rothe method for other evolutionary variational–hemivariational inequalities. Moreover, a Lipschitz continuous dependence conclusion of the solution on the right-hand side is proved. Finally, a new frictional contact problem for viscoelastic material is discussed, which illustrates an application of the theoretical results.

Abstract:We consider the following evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation with initial condition: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_tu(x,t)+H(x,u(x,t),\partial_xu(x,t))=0,\\ u(x,0)=\phi(x), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $\phi(x)\in C(M,\mathbb{R})$. Under some assumptions on the convexity of $H(x,u,p)$ with respect to $p$ and the Osgood growth of $H(x,u,p)$ with respect to $u$, we establish an implicitly variational principle and provide an intrinsic relation between viscosity solutions and certain minimal characteristics. Moreover, we obtain a representation formula of the viscosity solution of the evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

A general structure-preserving stochastic contact method is provided to seek the stochastic contact variational integrators. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the validity of this approach.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to numerical analysis of doubly-history dependent variational inequalities in contact mechanics. A fully discrete method is introduced for the variational inequalities, in which the doubly-history dependent operator is approximated by repeated left endpoint rule and the spatial variable is approximated by the linear element method. An optimal order error estimate is derived under appropriate solution regularities, and numerical examples illustrate the convergence orders of the method.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a study of a history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality arising in contact mechanics. The contact problem concerns the deformation of a viscoelastic body with long memory, subject to a general friction law on one part of the boundary and a frictionless Signorini condition on another part of the boundary. The solution existence and uniqueness of the history-dependent mixed hemivariational-variational inequality based on a Lagrange multiplier approach are proved. Then, a fully discrete scheme is introduced and studied. The trapezoidal rule is used to approximate the integral in the history-dependent operator. For the spatial discretization, the linear finite elements are used to discretize the displacement field, and dual basis functions are used in the approximation of the Lagrange multiplier. Optimal order error estimates are derived for the displacement and the Lagrange multiplier under appropriate solution regularity assumptions. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical prediction of the convergence orders.

Abstract:According to the basic idea of classical yin-yang complementarity and modern dual-complementarity, in a simple and unified new way proposed by Luo, the unconventional Hamilton-type variational principles of holonomic conservative system in analytical mechanics can be established systematically. This unconventional Hamilton-type variational principle can fully characterize the initial-value problem of analytical mechanics, so that it is an important innovation for the Hamilton-type variational principle. In this paper, an important integral relation is given, which can be considered as the expression of the generalized principle of virtual work for analytical mechanics in mechanics. Based on this relation, it is possible not only to obtain the principle of virtual work of holonomic conservative system in analytical mechanics, but also to derive systematically the complementary functionals for three-field and two-field unconventional variational principles, and the functional for the one-field one by the generalized Legendre transformation given in this paper. Further, with this new approach, the intrinsic relationship among various principles can be explained clearly. Meanwhile, the unconventional Hamilton-type variational principles of nonholonomic conservative system in analytical mechanics can also be established systematically in this paper.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of Aubry-Mather and weak KAM theories for contact Hamiltonian systems with Hamiltonians H(x,u,p) defined on T^*M×ℝ, satisfying Tonelli conditions with respect to p and 0<∂ H/∂ u⩽λ for some λ>0, where M is a connected, closed and smooth manifold. First, we show the uniqueness of the backward weak KAM solutions of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Using the unique backward weak KAM solution u_-, we prove the existence of the maximal forward weak KAM solution u_+. Next, we analyse Aubry set for the contact Hamiltonian system showing that it is the intersection of two Legendrian pseudographs G_u_- and G_u_+, and that the projection π:T^*M×ℝ→ M induces a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism π|_𝒜̃ from Aubry set 𝒜̃ onto the projected Aubry set 𝒜. At last, we introduce the notion of barrier functions and study their interesting properties along calibrated curves. Our analysis is based on a recent method by [43,44].

Abstract:Abstract We study the Hamilton–Jacobi equations in M and in where the Hamiltonian depends Lipschitz continuously on the variable u. In the framework of the semicontinuous viscosity solutions due to Barron–Jensen, we establish the comparison principle, existence theorem, and representation formula as value functions for extended real-valued, lower semicontinuous solutions for the Cauchy problem. We also establish some results on the long-time behavior of solutions for the Cauchy problem and classification of solutions for the stationary problem.

By introducing a solution semigroup, we provide a representation formula of the viscosity solution of the evolutionary equation. As its applications, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the viscosity solutions of the stationary equations. Moreover, we prove a new comparison theorem depending on the neighborhood of the projected Aubry set essentially, which is different from the one for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation independent of $u$.

Abstract:This paper deals with: (1) the generalized additive eigenvalue problem \[ H(x,u(x),Du(x))=c, \quad x\in M, \] where the unknown is a pair $(c,u)$ of a constant $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and a function $u$ on $M$ for which $u$ is a backward weak KAM solution (or equivalently, viscosity solution) of the above equation; (2) the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for \[ w_{t}(x,t)+H(x, w(x,t), Dw(x,t))=c,\quad (x,t)\in M\times(0,+\infty). \] We assume $H=H(x,u,p)$ satisfies Tonelli conditions in the argument $p\in T^*_xM$ and the uniform Lipschitz condition in the argument $u\in\mathbb{R}$. First, we provide three necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of backward weak KAM solutions of the stationary equation for a given $c\in \mathbb{R}$. Second, we analyse the structure of the set $\mathfrak{C}$ of all real numbers $c$'s for which the stationary equation admits backward weak KAM solutions. Third, the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the evolutionary equation is studied. Implicit Lax-Oleinik semigroups $\{T^\pm_t\}_{t\geqslant 0}$ play an essential role in this paper. The most important novelty in this work is to reveal several new aspects of existence and long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the above equations without monotonicity assumptions $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\geqslant 0$ (or, $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\leqslant 0$): the propeties of the operator $T^+_t\circ T^-_t$ is used to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of viscosity solutions of the stationary equation; three constants are introduced to analyse the structure of $\mathfrak{C}$; the information of $w$ in finite time partly determines the long-time behavior of $w$.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue to develop Aubry-Mather and weak KAM theories for contact Hamiltonian systems \begin{document}$ H(x,u,p) $\end{document} with certain dependence on the contact variable \begin{document}$ u $\end{document}. For the Lipschitz dependence case, we obtain some properties of the Mañé set. For the non-decreasing case, we provide some information on the Aubry set, such as the comparison property, graph property and a partially ordered relation for the collection of all projected Aubry sets with respect to backward weak KAM solutions. Moreover, we find a new flow-invariant set \begin{document}$ \tilde{\mathcal{S}}_s $\end{document} consists of strongly static orbits, which coincides with the Aubry set \begin{document}$ \tilde{\mathcal{A}} $\end{document} in classical Hamiltonian systems. Nevertheless, a class of examples are constructed to show \begin{document}$ \tilde{\mathcal{S}}_s\subsetneqq\tilde{\mathcal{A}} $\end{document} in the contact case. As their applications, we find some new phenomena appear even if the strictly increasing dependence of \begin{document}$ H $\end{document} on \begin{document}$ u $\end{document} fails at only one point, and we show that there is a difference for the vanishing discount problem from the negative direction between the minimal viscosity solution and non-minimal ones.

Abstract:We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Lagrangian functions for a class of second-order differential systems arising from physics. For such systems, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Lagrangian functions. Based on the variational principle and the splitting technique, we construct variational integrators and prove their equivalence to the composition of explicit symplectic methods. We apply the newly derived variational integrators to the Kepler problem and demonstrate their effectiveness in numerical simulations. Moreover, using the modified Lagrangian, we analyze the dynamical behavior of the numerical solutions in preserving the Laplace--Runge--Lenz (LRL) vector.
