Abstract:The Ptolemy project studies heterogeneous modeling, simulation, and design of concurren tems. The focus is on embedded systems , particularly those that mix technologies, including for exam ple analog and digital electronics, hardware and software, and electronics and mechanical d (including MEMS, microelectromechanical systems). Abstract:: This volume describes how to construct Ptolemy II models for web-based modeling or building applications. The first chapter includes an overview of Ptolemy II software, and a brief description of each of the models of computation that have been implemented. It describes the package structure of the software, and includes as an appendix a brief tutorial on UML notation, which is used throughout the documentation to explain the structure of the software. The second chapter is a tutorial on building models using Vergil, a graphical user interface where models are built pictorially. The third chapter discusses the Ptolemy II expression language, which is used to set parameter values. The next chapter gives an overview of actor libraries. These three chapters, plus one of the domain chapters, will be sufficient for users to start building interesting models in the selected domain. The fifth chapter gives a tutorial on designing actors in Java. The sixth chapter describes the Ptolemy coding style, The seventh chapter explains MoML, the XML schema used by Vergil to store models. And the eighth chapter, the final one in this part, explains how to construct custom applets. Volume 2 describes the software architecture of Ptolemy II, and volume 3 describes the domains, each of which implements a model of computation.

Abstract:In April 2016, a community of researchers working in the area of Principles of Data Management (PDM) joined in the Dagstuhl Castle in Germany for a workshop organized jointly by the Executive Committee of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Council of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT). The mission of this workshop was to identify and explore some of the most important research directions that have high relevance to society and to Computer Science today, and where the PDM community has the potential to make significant contributions. This report describes the family of research directions that the workshop focused on from three perspectives: potential practical relevance, results already obtained, and research questions that appear surmountable in the short and medium term. Abstract:Complex control systems are heterogeneous from both an implementation and a modeling perspective. Design and simulation environments for such systems need to integrate different component interaction styles, like differential equations, discrete events, state machines, dataflow networks, and real-time scheduling. This paper motivates the use of Ptolemy II software environment for mode ling and simulation of heterogeneous control systems. Ptolemy II advocates a component-based design methodology, and hierarchically integrates multiple models of computation, which can be used to capture different design perspectives. A Furuta pendulum control system is used as a motivating example. After designing a three-mode hybrid controller under idealized assumptions, implementation effects, like real-time scheduling and network protocols, are taken into consideration to achieve a more realistic simulation. The 3D animation package in Ptolemy II helps designers to visualize the control results. In this process of refining the design, components modeled in early phases can be reused.

Abstract:As the competitive networked robot system has the characteristics of strong interaction and high real-time request, the present control methods which are mostly used for the collaborative networked robot system may not be directly applied to the competitive one. Thus the hierarchical control architecture for the competitive networked robot system is proposed in this paper in order to adapt to its two characteristics above. To deal with the system observation uncertainty caused by noise and time delay, and the system action uncertainty caused by the opponent in the meantime, the control architecture based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDP) has been adopted by the executive layer to select the action of the maximum expected reward, thus fulfilling the intention of the strategy layer effectively. In addition, the introduction of the executive layer has successfully freed the strategic layer from the tasks that should have been completed by its bottom layer alone, thus enabling the strategic layer to focus more on its strategic design. In this paper, the networked robot system named Tele-LightSaber with a high degree of confrontation is designed and implemented, and the experiment results show the validity and efficiency of the proposed method on TLS platform.

Abstract:We describe the Pan-STARRS Moving Object Processing System (MOPS), a modern software package that produces automatic asteroid discoveries and identifications from catalogs of transient detections from next-generation astronomical survey telescopes. MOPS achieves >99.5% efficiency in producing orbits from a synthetic but realistic population of asteroids whose measurements were simulated for a Pan-STARRS4-class telescope. Additionally, using a nonphysical grid population, we demonstrate that MOPS can detect populations of currently unknown objects such as interstellar asteroids. MOPS has been adapted successfully to the prototype Pan-STARRS1 telescope despite differences in expected false detection rates, fill-factor loss, and relatively sparse observing cadence compared to a hypothetical Pan-STARRS4 telescope and survey. MOPS remains highly efficient at detecting objects but drops to 80% efficiency at producing orbits. This loss is primarily due to configurable MOPS processing limits that are not yet tuned for the Pan-STARRS1 mission. The core MOPS software package is the product of more than 15 person-years of software development and incorporates countless additional years of effort in third-party software to perform lower-level functions such as spatial searching or orbit determination. We describe the high-level design of MOPS and essential subcomponents, the suitability of MOPS for other survey programs, and suggest a road map for future MOPS development.

Abstract:The integration of web services and intelligent agents is promising for automated service discovery, negotiation, and cooperation. But due to the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of web services and agents, it is challenging to guide the behaviors of underlying agents to meet the high-level business (changeful) requirements. Traditional Policy-driven methods (Ponder, Rei, KAoS, etc) are not adaptable to direct the discovery, negotiation and cooperation of dynamic agents who may join in or leave out of a specific community or organization (virtual organization) at run time. The purpose of this paper is to model an ontology-based, policy-driven control framework that is suitable to supervise the dynamic agents according to high-level policies. On the basis of federated multi-agents infrastructure and ontologies of policies, domain concepts, and agent federations, a model of role-based policy specification framework is presented in this paper.

Abstract:Complex control systems are heterogeneous, in the sense of discrete computer-based controllers interacting with continuous physical plants, regular data sampling interleaving with irregular communication and user interaction, and multilayer and multimode control laws. This heterogeneity imposes great challenges for control system design in terms of end-to-end control performance modeling and simulation, traceable refinements from algorithms to software/hardware implementation, and component reuse. This paper presents an actor-oriented design methodology that tackles these issues by separating the data-centric computational components (a.k.a. actors) and the control-flow-centric scheduling and activation mechanisms ( a.k.a. frameworks). Semantically different frameworks are composed hierarchically to manage heterogeneous models and achieve actor and framework reuse. We introduce a notion of responsible frameworks to characterize the property that a framework can aggregate individual actor's execution into a well-defined composite execution such that heterogeneous models can be composed. This methodology is implemented in the Ptolemy II software environment. We discuss how some of the most useful models for control system design are implemented as responsible frameworks. As an example, the methodology and the Ptolemy II software environment is applied to the design of a distributed, real-time software implementation of a pendulum inversion and stabilization system.

Abstract:P4 is a domain-specific language for programming and specifying packet-processing systems. It is based on an elegant design with high-level abstractions like parsers and match-action pipelines that can be compiled to efficient implementations in software or hardware. Unfortunately, like many industrial languages, P4 has developed without a formal foundation. The P4 Language Specification is a 160-page document with a mixture of informal prose, graphical diagrams, and pseudocode, leaving many aspects of the language semantics up to individual compilation targets. The P4 reference implementation is a complex system, running to over 40KLoC of C++ code, with support for only a few targets. Clearly neither of these artifacts is suitable for formal reasoning about P4 in general. This paper presents a new framework, called Petr4, that puts P4 on a solid foundation. Petr4 consists of a clean-slate definitional interpreter and a core calculus that models a fragment of P4. Petr4 is not tied to any particular target: the interpreter is parameterized over an interface that collects features delegated to targets in one place, while the core calculus overapproximates target-specific behaviors using non-determinism. We have validated the interpreter against a suite of over 750 tests from the P4 reference implementation, exercising our target interface with tests for different targets. We validated the core calculus with a proof of type-preserving termination. While developing Petr4, we reported dozens of bugs in the language specification and the reference implementation, many of which have been fixed.

Abstract:Modern embedded computing systems tend to be heterogeneous in the sense of being composed of subsystems with very different characteristics, which communicate and interact in a variety of ways-synchronous or asynchronous, buffered or unbuffered, etc. Obviously, when designing such systems, a modeling language needs to reflect this heterogeneity. Today's modeling environments usually offer a variant of what we call amorphous heterogeneity to address this problem. This paper argues that modeling systems in this manner leads to unexpected and hard-to-analyze interactions between the communication mechanisms and proposes a more structured approach to heterogeneity, called hierarchical heterogeneity, to solve this problem. It proposes a model structure and semantic framework that support this form of heterogeneity, and discusses the issues arising from heterogeneous component interaction and the desire for component reuse. It introduces the notion of domain polymorphism as a way to address these issues.

Abstract:We describe AOS, the first general-purpose system for model-based control of autonomous robots using AI planning that fully supports partial observability and noisy sensing. The AOS provides a code-based language for specifying a generative model of the system, making model specification easier and model sampling efficient. It provides a language for specifying the relation between the model and the code, using which it auto-generates all required integration code. This allows Plug'n Play behavior, which facilitates incremental and modular system design. Extensive experiments on real and simulated robotic platforms demonstrate these advantages.

Abstract:In the design of spoken dialogue systems that are robust to speech recognition and interpretation errors, modelling uncertainty is crucial. Recently, Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) have been shown to provide a well-founded probabilistic framework for developing such systems. This paper reports on the design and evaluation of the user act model (UAM) as part of the Hidden Information State (HIS) POMDP dialogue manager. Within this system, the UAM represents the probability of a user producing a certain dialogue act, given the last system act and the dialogue state. Its design is domain-independent and founded on the notions of adjacency pairs and dialogue act preconditions. Experimental evaluation results on both simulated and real data show that the UAM plays a significant role in improving robustness, but it requires that the N-best lists of user act hypotheses and their confidence scores are of good quality.
