Abstract:In the prevailing operations of agile satellites for time delay integration (TDI) imaging tasks, two degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the attitude maneuver are determined by tracking the transient target point, whereas the third DOF is used in the control of the drift angle, which is calculated within the sensor focal plane as a feedback. However, optimal attitude maneuver planning is rarely considered during a TDI imaging mission to improve the efficiency of agile satellites. In this paper, a general attitude maneuver planning for agile satellites in the TDI imaging of an arbitrary target strip is formulated, where the energy consumption is minimized while the TDI imaging quality is guaranteed. Coupled with the attitude dynamics, the highly nonlinear constraints required by the TDI imaging principal make this planning hard to solve. By introducing a parameterized time-mapping technique and a compact approach to the attitude maneuver that ensures zero drift angle, the problem is relieved in both complexity and computational burden. The validity of this approach is verified by various imaging simulations.

Abstract:Project overview. The current study focuses on the nature of team coordination dynamics within all-human teams and Human-Autonomy Teams (HAT) in the context of the development of a fully-fledged synthetic agent that is a computational cognitive model for a three-agent Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) ground crew. In this study, the relationship between team coordination dynamics and team performance within the HAT and all-human teams is considered. To serve as a teammate, the synthetic agent must be able to communicate and coordinate with its human teammates in a constructive and timely manner (Demir, McNeese, & Cooke, 2016). In this current research, there were three heterogeneous team members who communicated via a text-based communication system to photograph target waypoints. Each team member had a different role: (1) navigator – provides information regarding a flight plan with speed and altitude restrictions of each waypoint; (2) pilot – controls the UAS by adjusting its altitude and airspeed by negotiating with the photographer to take a good photo for the target waypoints; and (3) photographer – screens camera settings, and sends feedback to the other team members regarding the status of target’s photograph. At each target waypoint, this coordination sequence among the team members, called Information-Negotiation-Feedback (INF), is captured by a Kappa Score (Gorman, Amazeen, & Cooke, 2010) that describes the sequence and timing of the information coordination. Three conditions were created that manipulated the pilot role: (1) Synthetic – pilot was the synthetic agent, (2) Control – pilot was a randomly assigned participant, and (3) Experimenter – pilot was an experimenter who was highly experienced with the task and focused on pushing and pulling the information in a timely manner. Method. In this experiment, there were 30 teams (ten teams for each condition): control teams were composed of three participants randomly assigned to each role; synthetic and experimenter teams were composed of only two participants randomly assigned to the navigator and photographer roles. The experiment consisted of five missions (each 40 minutes) in which teams needed to take as many “good” photos as possible of ground targets while avoiding alarms and rule violations. Several measures were obtained from this research, including team performance scores (mission and target level), team process measures (situation awareness, process ratings, communication and coordination), and other measures (teamwork knowledge, workload, and demographics). The research reported here identifies how differences in team coordination, captured by Kappa, relate to performance of all human teams and HAT teams. In this paper, we focus on: (1) target level team performance scores calculated based on the time spent inside a target waypoint to get a good photo; and (2) two team coordination dynamics measures: stability and team communication determinism. Stability was inversely related to the largest Lyapunov Exponent which was estimated by Kappa, that is, the INF coordination sequence. Team communication determinism was estimated from communication data using Joint Recurrence Quantification Analysis (Marwan, Carmen, Thiel, & Kurths, 2007) and served as an index of flexible behavior. Results and discussion. In general, findings indicate that (1) synthetic teams were most stable, followed by experimenter teams, who were moderately stable, and control teams, who were least stable; and (2) extreme stability and instability corresponded to lower levels of performance; experimenter teams performed best, followed by control teams and, then synthetic teams. Thus, synthetic agents could be made more effective if interventions were developed to enhance the flexibility and adaptive nature of HATs (Demir, 2017).

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed system design and component selection for the Transforming Proximity Operations and Docking Service (TPODS) module, designed to gain custody of uncontrolled resident space objects (RSOs) via rendezvous and proximity operation (RPO). In addition to serving as a free-flying robotic manipulator to work with cooperative and uncooperative RSOs, the TPODS modules are engineered to have the ability to cooperate with one another to build scaffolding for more complex satellite servicing activities. The structural design of the prototype module is inspired by Tensegrity principles, minimizing the structural mass of the modules frame. The prototype TPODS module is fabricated using lightweight polycarbonate with an aluminum or carbon fiber frame. The inner shell that houses various electronic and pneumatic components is 3-D printed using ABS material. Four OpenMV H7 R1 cameras are used for the pose estimation of resident space objects (RSOs), including other TPODS modules. Compressed air supplied by an external source is used for the initial testing and can be replaced by module-mounted nitrogen pressure vessels for full on-board propulsion later. A Teensy 4.1 single-board computer is used as a central command unit that receives data from the four OpenMV cameras, and commands its thrusters based on the control logic.

Abstract:This paper reports about the performed investigations for the implementation of the wide-swath TOPS (Terrain Observation by Progressive Scan) imaging mode with TerraSAR-X (TSX). The TOPS mode overcomes the limitations imposed by the ScanSAR mode by steering the antenna along track during the acquisition of a burst. In this way, all targets are illuminated with the complete azimuth antenna pattern, and, thus, scalloping is circumvented, and an azimuth dependence of signal-to-noise ratio and distributed target ambiguity ratio (DTAR) is avoided. However, the use of electronically steered antennas leads to a quantization of the steering law and a nonideal pattern for squinted angles (grating lobes and main lobe reduction). The former provokes spurious peaks, while the latter introduces slight scalloping and DTAR deterioration. These effects are analyzed and quantified for TSX, and a TOPS system design approach is presented. Next, the requirements concerning interferometry are investigated. Finally, several results are shown with the TSX data, including a comparison between the TOPS and the ScanSAR modes and the reporting of the first TOPS interferometric results.

Abstract:Accumulating space debris edges the space domain ever closer to cascading Kessler syndrome, a chain reaction of debris generation that could dramatically inhibit the practical use of space. Meanwhile, a growing number of retired satellites, particularly in higher orbits like geostationary orbit, remain nearly functional except for minor but critical malfunctions or fuel depletion. Servicing these ailing satellites and cleaning up "high-value" space debris remains a formidable challenge, but active interception of these targets with autonomous repair and deorbit spacecraft is inching closer toward reality as shown through a variety of rendezvous demonstration missions. However, some practical challenges are still unsolved and undemonstrated. Devoid of station-keeping ability, space debris and fuel-depleted satellites often enter uncontrolled tumbles on-orbit. In order to perform on-orbit servicing or active debris removal, docking spacecraft (the "Chaser") must account for the tumbling motion of these targets (the "Target"), which is oftentimes not known a priori. Accounting for the tumbling dynamics of the Target, the Chaser spacecraft must have an algorithmic approach to identifying the state of the Target's tumble, then use this information to produce useful motion planning and control. Furthermore, careful consideration of the inherent uncertainty of any maneuvers must be accounted for in order to provide guarantees on system performance. This study proposes the complete pipeline of rendezvous with such a Target, starting from a standoff estimation point to a mating point fixed in the rotating Target's body frame. A novel visual estimation algorithm is applied using a 3D time-of-flight camera to perform remote standoff estimation of the Target's rotational state and its principal axes of rotation. A novel motion planning algorithm is employed, making use of offline simulation of potential Target tumble types to produce a look-up table that is parsed on-orbit using the estimation data. This nonlinear programming-based algorithm accounts for known Target geometry and important practical constraints such as field of view requirements, producing a motion plan in the Target's rotating body frame. Meanwhile, an uncertainty characterization method is demonstrated which propagates uncertainty in the Target's tumble uncertainty to provide disturbance bounds on the motion plan's reference trajectory in the inertial frame. Finally, this uncertainty bound is provided to a robust tube model predictive controller, which provides tube-based robustness guarantees on the system's ability to follow the reference trajectory translationally. The combination and interfaces of these methods are shown, and some of the practical implications of their use on a planned demonstration on NASA's Astrobee free-flyer are additionally discussed. Simulation results of each of the components individually and in a complete case study example of the full pipeline are presented as the study prepares to move toward demonstration on the International Space Station.

Abstract:We study the coloring problem: Given a graph G, decide whether $c(G) \leq q$ or $c(G) \ge Q$, where c(G) is the chromatic number of G. We derive conditional hardness for this problem for any constant $3 \le q < Q$. For $q\ge 4$, our result is based on Khot's 2-to-1 conjecture [Khot'02]. For $q=3$, we base our hardness result on a certain `fish shaped' variant of his conjecture. We also prove that the problem almost coloring is hard for any constant $\eps>0$, assuming Khot's Unique Games conjecture. This is the problem of deciding for a given graph, between the case where one can 3-color all but a $\eps$ fraction of the vertices without monochromatic edges, and the case where the graph contains no independent set of relative size at least $\eps$. Our result is based on bounding various generalized noise-stability quantities using the invariance principle of Mossel et al [MOO'05].

Abstract:We performed closed-loop lab testing of large-format deformable mirrors (DMs) with hybrid variable reluctance actuators. TNO has been developing the hybrid variable reluctance actuators in support for a new generation of adaptive secondary mirrors (ASMs), which aim to be more robust and reliable. Compared to the voice coil actuators, this new actuator technology has a higher current to force efficiency, and thus can support DMs with thicker facesheets. Before putting this new technology on-sky, it is necessary to understand how to control it and how it behaves in closed-loop. We performed closed-loop tests with the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor with three large-format deformable mirrors that use the TNO actuators: DM3, FLASH, and IRTF-ASM-1 ASM. The wavefront sensor and the real-time control systems were developed for the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) and the UH 2.2-meter telescope ASMs. We tested IRTF-ASM-1 on-sky and proved that it meets all of our performance requirements. This work presents our lab setup for the experiments, the techniques we have employed to drive these new ASMs, the results of our closed-loop lab tests for FLASH and IRTF-ASM-1, and the on-sky closed-loop results of IRTF-ASM-1 ASM.

Abstract:Modern physics experiments are frequently very complex, relying on multiple simultaneous events to happen in order to obtain the desired result. The experiment control system plays a central role in orchestrating the measurement setup: However, its development is often treated as secondary with respect to the hardware, its importance becoming evident only during the operational phase. Therefore, the AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) collaboration has created a framework for easily coding control systems, specifically targeting atomic, quantum, and antimatter experiments. This framework, called Total Automation of LabVIEW Operations for Science (TALOS), unifies all the machines of the experiment in a single entity, thus enabling complex high-level decisions to be taken, and it is constituted by separate modules, called MicroServices, that run concurrently and asynchronously. This enhances the stability and reproducibility of the system while allowing for continuous integration and testing while the control system is running. The system demonstrated high stability and reproducibility, running completely unsupervised during the night and weekends of the data-taking campaigns. The results demonstrate the suitability of TALOS to manage an entire physics experiment in full autonomy: being open-source, experiments other than the AEgIS experiment can benefit from it.

Abstract:In recent years, interplanetary exploration has gained significant momentum, leading to a focus on the development of launch vehicles. However, the critical technology of edl mechanisms has not received the same level of attention and remains less mature and capable. To address this gap, we took advantage of the REXUS program to develop a pioneering edl mechanism. We propose an alternative to conventional, parachute based landing vehicles by utilizing autorotation. Our approach enables future additions such as steerability, controllability, and the possibility of a soft landing. To validate the technique and our specific implementation, we conducted a sounding rocket experiment on REXUS29. The systems design is outlined with relevant design decisions and constraints, covering software, mechanics, electronics and control systems. Furthermore, an emphasis will also be the organization and setup of the team entirely made up and executed by students. The flight results on REXUS itself are presented, including the most important outcomes and possible reasons for mission failure. We have not archived an autorotation based landing, but provide a reliable way of building and operating such vehicles. Ultimately, future works and possibilities for improvements are outlined. The research presented in this paper highlights the need for continued exploration and development of edl mechanisms for future interplanetary missions. By discussing our results, we hope to inspire further research in this area and contribute to the advancement of space exploration technology.

Abstract:Nowadays, the demand for optimized services in urban environments to provide better society wellness is increasing. In this sense, ground transportation in dense urban environments has been facing challenges for many years (e.g., congestion and resilience). One import outcome of the effort made toward the creation of new concepts for enhancing urban transportation is the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concept. UAM aims at enhancing city transportation services using manned and unmanned vehicles. However, these operations bring many challenges to be faced, e.g., the interaction between the controller agent and autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, trajectory planning is not a simple task due to several factors. Firstly, the trajectories must consider a reduced minimum separation as eVTOL vehicle are expected to operate in complex urban environments. This leads the trajectory planning process to observe safety primitives more restrictively once the airspace is expected to comport many vehicles that follow small minimum separation standards. Thereupon, the main goal of the Trajectory-Based UAM Operations Simulator (TUS) is to simulate the Trajectory-Based UAM operations in urban environments considering the presence of both manned and unmanned eVTOL vehicles. For this, a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) approach is adopted, which considers an input (i.e., the eVTOL vehicles, their origin and destination, and their respective trajectories) and produces an output (which describes if the trajectories are safe and the elapsed operation time). The main contribution of this simulation tool is to provide a simulated environment for testing and measuring the effectiveness (e.g., flight duration) of trajectories planned for eVTOL vehicles.

Abstract:We present the hardware and software systems implementing autonomous operation, distributed real-time monitoring, and control for the EBEX instrument. EBEX is a NASA-funded balloon-borne microwave polarimeter designed for a 14 day Antarctic flight that circumnavigates the pole. To meet its science goals the EBEX instrument autonomously executes several tasks in parallel: it collects attitude data and maintains pointing control in order to adhere to an observing schedule; tunes and operates up to 1920 TES bolometers and 120 SQUID amplifiers controlled by as many as 30 embedded computers; coordinates and dispatches jobs across an onboard computer network to manage this detector readout system; logs over 3~GiB/hour of science and housekeeping data to an onboard disk storage array; responds to a variety of commands and exogenous events; and downlinks multiple heterogeneous data streams representing a selected subset of the total logged data. Most of the systems implementing these functions have been tested during a recent engineering flight of the payload, and have proven to meet the target requirements. The EBEX ground segment couples uplink and downlink hardware to a client-server software stack, enabling real-time monitoring and command responsibility to be distributed across the public internet or other standard computer networks. Using the emerging dirfile standard as a uniform intermediate data format, a variety of front end programs provide access to different components and views of the downlinked data products. This distributed architecture was demonstrated operating across multiple widely dispersed sites prior to and during the EBEX engineering flight.

Abstract:The Engineering Test Satellite VII (ETS-VII), an unmanned spacecraft equipped with a 2-m long, six-degree-of-freedom manipulator arm, was developed and launched by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). ETS-VII has successfully carried out a variety of on-board experiments with its manipulator arm, and these key technologies are essential for an orbital free-flying robot. These results will provide a solid basis for future satellite servicing missions. This paper highlights manipulator control utilizing the concepts of the generalized Jacobian matrix and the reaction null-space. These concepts have been proposed and discussed for the past ten years using laboratory test beds, and their practical application has now been demonstrated in orbit.

Abstract:The Tanpopo experiment was the first Japanese astrobiology mission on board the Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility on the International Space Station (ISS). The experiments were designed to address two important astrobiological topics, panspermia and the chemical evolution process toward the generation of life. These experiments also tested low-density aerogel and monitored the microdebris environment around low Earth orbit. The following six subthemes were identified to address these goals: (1) Capture of microbes in space: Estimation of the upper limit of microbe density in low Earth orbit; (2) Exposure of microbes in space: Estimation of the survival time course of microbes in the space environment; (3) Capture of cosmic dust on the ISS and analysis of organics: Detection of the possible presence of organic compounds in cosmic dust; (4) Alteration of organic compounds in space environments: Evaluation of decomposition time courses of organic compounds in space; (5) Space verification of the Tanpopo hyper-low-density aerogel: Durability and particle-capturing capability of aerogel; (6) Monitoring of the number of space debris: Time-dependent change in space debris environment. Subthemes 1 and 2 address the panspermia hypothesis, whereas 3 and 4 address the chemical evolution. The last two subthemes contribute to space technology development. Some of the results have been published previously or are included in this issue. This article summarizes the current status of the Tanpopo experiments.

Abstract:We present a final overview of the efforts by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to automate the operation of the largest fleet of autonomous maritime vehicles. The vehicles are intended for large-scale demonstrations and tests of US Navy systems or tactics. This review covers a preexisting distributed architecture for human-in-the-loop control of several autonomous high-speed boats with a main focus on the planning, formation assignment, and formation switching pipeline. Algorithm capabilities are described and validated in simulation and field tests using real-world vehicles. Theoretical lower bounds on the time required to change formations are also derived and used to bound our experimental performance. We are able to present data from the 2019 “final exam” that pitted this architecture in a head-to-head competition, which was won after a perfect run with no hazardous maneuvers recorded under autonomous control. The effort concluded successfully on December 31, 2020, with the delivery of code and documentation after successful integration and testing exercises in 2019 and 2020. We conclude the paper with discussions of limitations, extensions, and suggestions for future work.

Abstract:The North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University (NC A&T) in collaboration with Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has developed methodologies for creating simulation-based technology tools that are capable of inferring the perceptions and behavioral states of autonomous systems. These methodologies have the potential to provide the Test and Evaluation (T&E) community at the Department of Defense (DoD) with a greater insight into the internal processes of these systems. The methodologies use only external observations and do not require complete knowledge of the internal processing of and/or any modifications to the system under test. This paper presents an example of one such simulation-based technology tool, named as the Data-Driven Intelligent Prediction Tool (DIPT). DIPT was developed for testing a multi-platform Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system capable of conducting collaborative search missions. DIPT's Graphical User Interface (GUI) enables the testers to view the aircraft's current operating state, predicts its current target-detection status, and provides reasoning for exhibiting a particular behavior along with an explanation of assigning a particular task to it.

Abstract:We describe the experimental methodology developed and employed in a series of experiments within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Conflict Modeling, Planning, and Outcomes Exploration (COMPOEX) Program. The primary purpose of the effort was development of tools and methods for analysis, planning and predictive assessment of plans for complex operations where integrated political-military-economic-social-infrastructure and information (PMESII) considerations play decisive roles. As part of the program, our team executed several broad-based experiments, involving dozens of experts from several agencies simultaneously. The methodology evolved from one experiment to another because of the lessons learned. The paper presents the motivation, objectives, and structure of this interagency experiment series; the methods we explored in the experiments; and the results, lessons learned and recommendations for future efforts of such nature.

Abstract:This Final Report (FR) presents the results of the Enhanced direct imaging exoplanet detection with astrometry mass determination project, which was executed in support of NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program and the ROSES Technology Development for Exoplanet Missions (TDEM). The first milestone is concerned with a demonstration of medium fidelity astrometry accuracy and the second milestone demonstrates high-contrast imaging utilizing the same astrometry-capable optics. We have met milestone #1 with a comfortable margin. The average accuracy obtained over the three datasets is 5.75e-5 L/D, which is 4 times better than the milestone requirement, or equivalent to 2.5microarcsec on 2.4m telescope, or 1.5microarcsec for a 4m telescope, working in the visible band. These results show the potential of this technique to enable detection and measure masses of Earth-like planets around nearby stars, hence bringing a real benefit to the astronomy community. We also met milestone #2 and demonstrated that it is possible to achieve high-contrast imaging utilizing a coronagraph fed by a telescope equipped with a DP, enabling dual use of the telescope. We performed three different high-contrast imaging runs and met the milestone #2 of 5e-7 raw contrast for all of them. On average, we obtained 3.33e-7 raw contrast considering all data sets. This result is 35% better than the milestone #2 requirement. We validated the stability of the high-contrast region by averaging frames and subtracting the average from single frames, which resulted in contrast improvement of approximately one order of magnitude, reaching 2.72e-8 contrast. The main achievement of this work was the medium fidelity demonstration and feasibility validation of performing astrometry and direct imaging using the same instrument, significantly enhancing the expected scientific yield of dedicated exoplanet characterization missions.

The ReSWARM Microgravity Flight Experiments: Planning, Control, and Model Estimation for On-Orbit Close Proximity Operations

Abstract:On-orbit close proximity operations involve robotic spacecraft maneuvering and making decisions for a growing number of mission scenarios demanding autonomy, including on-orbit assembly, repair, and astronaut assistance. Of these scenarios, on-orbit assembly is an enabling technology that will allow large space structures to be built in-situ, using smaller building block modules. However, robotic on-orbit assembly involves a number of technical hurdles such as changing system models. For instance, grappled modules moved by a free-flying "assembler" robot can cause significant shifts in system inertial properties, which has cascading impacts on motion planning and control portions of the autonomy stack. Further, on-orbit assembly and other scenarios require collision-avoiding motion planning, particularly when operating in a "construction site" scenario of multiple assembler robots and structures. These complicating factors, relevant to many autonomous microgravity robotics use cases, are tackled in the ReSWARM flight experiments as a set of tests on the International Space Station using NASA's Astrobee robots. RElative Satellite sWarming and Robotic Maneuvering, or ReSWARM, demonstrates multiple key technologies for close proximity operations and on-orbit assembly: (1) global long-horizon planning, accomplished using offline and online sampling-based planner options that consider the system dynamics; (2) on-orbit reconfiguration model learning, using the recently-proposed RATTLE information-aware planning framework; and (3) robust control tools to provide low-level control robustness using current system knowledge. These approaches are detailed individually and in an "on-orbit assembly scenario" of multi-waypoint tracking on-orbit. Additionally, detail is provided discussing the practicalities of hardware implementation and unique aspects of working with Astrobee in microgravity.

Abstract:The European Space Agency ESA is currently preparing the two deep space missions, Huygens and Rosetta. This paper reviews the related requirements for autonomous operations in a poorly known environment. While for Huygens emphasis is on the control of the descent through Titan's atmosphere, for Rosetta the safe drilling of material samples in the microgravity environment of a comet is analysed. The control concepts to enable adaptive reactions in an uncertain, remote environment are summarized for the crucial mission phases. The performance results obtained from computer simulations are presented and discussed.

Toward Holistic Planning and Control Optimization for Dual-Arm Rearrangement

Abstract:Long-horizon task and motion planning (TAMP) is notoriously difficult to solve, let alone optimally, due to the tight coupling between the interleaved (discrete) task and (continuous) motion planning phases, where each phase on its own is frequently an NP-hard or even PSPACE-hard computational challenge. In this study, we tackle the even more challenging goal of jointly optimizing task and motion plans for a real dual-arm system in which the two arms operate in close vicinity to solve highly constrained tabletop multi-object rearrangement problems. Toward that, we construct a tightly integrated planning and control optimization pipeline, Makespan-Optimized Dual-Arm Planner (MODAP) that combines novel sampling techniques for task planning with state-of-the-art trajectory optimization techniques. Compared to previous state-of-the-art, MODAP produces task and motion plans that better coordinate a dual-arm system, delivering significantly improved execution time improvements while simultaneously ensuring that the resulting time-parameterized trajectory conforms to specified acceleration and jerk limits.
