Abstract:It’s a critical issue for the successful commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to achieve long-term thermal stability without significant performance degradation. Current work reports a cost-competitive and scalable method for modifying porous Gadolinia doped ceria (GDC) barrier layers, to obtain an almost-dense, sintering-active, and Sr-blocking cathode/electrolyte interface, by growing nanoparticles in-situ on porous surfaces. The cell performance only deteriorates by ~0.5% after 20 times thermal cycles as the temperature fluctuated between 200 and 750 ℃, which is more prominent enhancement than ~16% for pristine cell, and exhibits higher initial performance. The hydrothermal modified symmetric cell shows ~60% polarization resistance decrease and well-attached cathode/electrolyte interfaces after ~1200 hours of operation, exhibiting excellent stability while the pristine cell interfaces peeled off.
