Abstract:The penetration characteristics of pellet injection and SMBI in the HL-2A tokamak were analyzed by means of the tangential Hα detection array. The speed of the pellet can also measured by the detection system. The penetration depth of SMB was estimated by the signal of each channel. As was analyzed above, it can be summarized as below: The pellet velocity measured by the array is about 700-800 m/s. The penetration depth of SMBI with high gas pressure is larger than that with low gas pressure, and the first result of the low temperature has shown that SMB at low temperature penetrated deeper than that at room temperature. So, increasing the gas pressure and decreasing the temperature could enhance the refueling efficiency.

Abstract:The fuelling efficiency and injection depth are the fundamental problems of supersonic molecular beam fuelling. In the recent supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) experiments, the injection depths of SMBI have been found mainly dependent on the background electron density and temperature, the source gas pressure and temperature. The empirical scaling of SMBI depth was obtained at room temperature. Hydrogen clusters formed in the beam have been observed in the low temperature (source gas at liquid nitrogen temperature) SMBI experiments. It resulted in injection depth greater than 30 cm. Comparing the relationships between injection depths, plasma background parameters and molecular source temperature, the cluster formation phenomena during low temperature MBI are analyzed.

Abstract:A method of the particle transport study using supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) and microwave reflectometry is reported in this paper. Experimental results confirm that pulsed SMBI is a good perturbation source with deeper penetration and better localization than the standard gas puffing. The local density modulation is induced using the pulsed SMBI and the perturbation density is measured by the microwave reflectometry. Using Fourier transform analysis for the local density perturbation, radial profiles of the amplitude and phase of the density modulation can be obtained. The experimental results in HL-2A show that the particle injected by SMBI is located at about r/a=0.65-0.75. The position of the main particle source can be determined through three aspects: the minimum of the phase of the first harmonic of the Fourier transform of the modulated density measured by microwave reflectometry; the H-a intensity profile and the local density increase ratio. The maximum of the amplitude of the first harmonic shifts often inward relative to the particle source location, which indicates clearly there is an inward particle pinch in this area. Good agreement has been found between the experimental results and the simulation using analytical transport model. The particle diffusivity D and the particle convection velocity V have been obtained by doing this simulation. The sensitivity in the transport coefficients of the amplitude and the phase of the density modulation has been discussed.

Abstract:Experiments have been performed in HL-2A with ECRH and SMBI for particle transport investigation. The ECRH driven density pump-out phe nomenon (negative density perturbation) in the cent ral region has been observed, and also a positive densi ty perturbation in the peripheral region. The edge ensity increases is due to the out-gassing caused by ECRH. orrelation between the turbulence increase and th e ensity pump-out has been found. Turbulence reduction has b een observed during the pump-out/pinch transition. Strong asymmetry for the negative and positive density per turbation propagation has been observed, which is v ery similar to that observed in cold and hot pulse heat transport. The outward convection (negative veloci ty) has been observed during pump-out transient phase. The particle transport during constant ECRH phase is al so investigated with SMBI modulation. The convective v elocity is outward for low density in both ECRH and OH regimes, and the absolute value of the convective v elocity is much larger in ECRH than in OH.

Abstract:Three new diagnostic systems have been presented in this article: (1) the pulse molecular beam injection as a modulated particle source and microwave reflectometry for investigation of the particle transport, (2) a new three-step electrostatic probe array for zonal flow studying, and (3) eight-channel laser interferometer with 6m HCN laser for electron density profile measurement with good spatial resolution. The main experimental results have also been shown briefly.

Abstract:The experimental results of low pressure supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) fuelling on the HL-2A closed divertor indicate that during the period of pulsed SMBI the power density convected at the target plate surfaces was 0.4 times of that before or after the beam injection. An empirical scaling law used for the SMBI penetration depth for the HL-2A plasma was obtained. The cluster jet injection (CJI) is a new fuelling method which is based on and developed from the experiments of SMBI in the HL-1M tokamak. The hydrogen clusters are produced at liquid nitrogen temperature in a supersonic adiabatic expansion of moderate backing pressure gases into vacuum through a Laval nozzle and are measured by Rayleigh scattering. The measurement results have shown that the averaged cluster size of as large as hundreds of atoms was found at the backing pressures of more than 0.1 MPa. Multifold diagnostics gave coincidental evidence that when there was hydrogen CJI in the HL-2A plasma, a great deal of particles from the jet were deposited at a terminal area rather than uniformly ablated along the injecting path. SMB with clusters, which are like micro-pellets, will be of benefit for deeper fuelling, and its injection behaviour was somewhat similar to that of pellet injection. Both the particle penetration depth and the fuelling efficiency of the CJI were distinctly better than that of the normal SMBI under similar discharge operation. During hydrogen CJI or high-pressure SMBI, a combination of collision and radiative stopping forced the runaway electrons to cool down to thermal velocity due to such a massive fuelling.

Abstract:Enhanced confinement has been achieved by the centre fuelling of pellet injection on the HL-2A tokamak. The energy confinement time increases from 50 ms to 140 ms after the pellet injection. Experimental results show that the improvement of the confinement is related to the decrease of the electron heat transport. Several phenomena which may lead to the improved confinement have been observed in the experiments. After the pellet injection the hollow electron temperature profile and the peaked electron density profile can be sustained for about 200 ms, but the improved confinement remains at about 500 ms. Sawtooth features and MHD modes have been observed by soft x-ray array and the Mirnov probes. The weak (or reversed) magnetic shear is thought to be an important cause of the low electron heat transport.

Abstract:Recent experiment results from the HL-2A tokamak are presented in this paper. Supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) with liquid nitrogen temperature propellant is used. Low temperature SMBI can form hydrogen clusters that penetrate into the plasma more deeply and efficiently. Particle diffusion coefficient and convection velocity (D = 0.5-1.5 m(2) s(-1) and V-conv < 40 ms(-1), respectively) are obtained at the plasma periphery using modulated SMBI. Multi-probe measurements reveal the m = 0-1, n = 0 symmetries of directly measured low frequency (7-9 kHz) electric potential and field are simultaneously observed for the first time. Impurity transport is determined with the laser blow-off system and transport code. A disruption predictor has been derived based cm MHD activity observations and statistical analysis. Sawtooth characteristics during ECRH are investigated and coupling between m = I and m/n = 2/1 modes is studied. Detachment features of HL-2A divertor are numerically and experimentally studied using the code SOLPS5.0 and measured data. The long divertor legs and thin divertor throats in HL-2A pose MHD shaping problems resulting in momentum losses even at low densities and strongly enhanced main chamber losses.

Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

Abstract:In magnetic confinement fusion devices, supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) is commonly used as a fueling method, which has also performed well in physical studies since it was first proposed on the HL-1 tokamak by Southwestern Institute of Physics. This study presents the development of the SMBI technique since its first use in fusion experimental devices and reviews the progress on the investigation of plasma physics using the SMBI. In addition, this study further discusses the potential applications of the SMBI technique on future fusion devices.

Another important effect of the CJI or the high pressure SMBI was that the runaway electrons were cooled down to thermal velocity due to a combination of collision and radiative stopping in such a massive fuelling. So the new fuelling technique may become a good treatment to mitigate fast plasma shutdowns and disruptions.

Abstract:In this paper we report the observation of a natural generated internal particle transport barrier ( pITB ) in purely Ohmically heated plasmas in the HL-2A tokamak. The pITB have been observed when the line average electron density exceeds a threshold, which is nc=2.2×10m. The phenomenon is perfectly reproducible and identified by profile analysis, perturbative transport studies with Supersonic Molecular Beam Injection (SMBI) modulation and the Doppler reflectometry. The influence of the ECRH heating on pITB will be also presented in this paper. The barrier is generally located around ρ= 0.65-0.7 with a width of 1-2 cm. Especial analysing the propagation of a particle wave generated by SMBI modulation across the barrier, the particle diffusivity and the convective velocity have been separately determined. The diffusivity is rather will-like than step-like and lower in the zone of barrier than outside. The convection is inward outside of the barrier, while the convection is outward inside the barrier. The experimental results have been compared to an analytical model for particle transport to quantitatively characterize this barrier. A satisfactory agreement has been found between the experimental points and the analytical calculation. The change of sign for the convective velocity has been explained by the turbulence TEM/ITG system. The density threshold in pure Ohmic discharge may be correlated to the TEM/ITG transition via the collisionality. Some possibilities of the mechanism leading to the pITBs formation have been discussed and need further experiments to be confirmed.

Abstract:The physics experiments on the HL-2A tokamak have been focused on confinement improvement, particle and thermal transport, zonal flow and turbulence, filament characteristics, energetic particle induced modes, and plasma fueling efficiency since 2008. ELMy H-mode discharges are achieved using combination of NBI heating with ECRH. The power threshold is found to increase with decrease of density, almost independent of the launching order of the ECRH and NBI heating power. The pedestal density profiles in the H-mode discharges are measured. The particle outward convection is observed during pump-out transient phase with ECRH. The negative density perturbation (pump-out) is observed to propagate much faster than the positive one caused by out-gassing. The core electron thermal transport reduction triggered by far-axis ECRH switch-off is investigated. The coexistence of low frequency zonal flow (LFZF) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is observed. The dependence of the intensities of LFZFs and GAMs on safety factor and ECRH power is identified. The 3D spatial features of plasma filaments are measured and large-scale structures along a magnetic field line analyzed for the first time. The beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs), excited by large magnetic islands (m-BAE) and by energetic electrons (e-BAE), are observed. The frequency of the beta-induced Alfvén acoustic eigenmode (BAAE) identified in experiment is in agreement with theoretical prediction. The results for the study of fueling efficiency and penetration characteristics of supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) are described.

Abstract:We construct a diffusive, bi-stable cellular automata model to elucidate the physical mechanisms underlying observed edge localized mode (ELM) mitigation by supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI). The extended cellular automata model reproduces key qualitative features of ELM mitigation experiments, most significantly the increase in frequency of grain ejection events (ELMs), and the decrease in the number of grains ejected by these transport events. The basic mechanism of mitigation is the triggering of small scale pedestal avalanches by additional grain injection directly into the H-mode pedestal. The small scale avalanches prevent the gradient from building-up to marginality throughout the pedestal, thus avoiding large scale transport events which span the full extent of that region. We explore different grain injection parameters to find an optimal SMBI scenario. We show that shallow SMBI deposition is sufficient for ELM mitigation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:The x-ray radiation generation in gold cylindrical cavities that were heated by 'Shenguang II' facilities laser light with a wavelength of 1.053 mum has been experimentally investigated. The radiation temperature was measured using soft x-ray spectrometer (SXS). The angle distribution of x-ray was investigated with vacuum x-ray diode. In order to increase radiation temperature, the length of cylindrical cavity was shortened from 1600 mum to 700 mum, maximum radiation temperature that 'Shenguang II' can reach was studied. Radiation temperatures of 150eV for 1600 mum long cavity and of 183 eV for 700 mum long cavity were measured. With 1000 mum cylindrical tube connected at the center of the 1600 mum long cavity, transport efficiency of 34% was obtained by comparing flux from diagnostic hole with flux from the tube end. On the basis of energy conversion law and heat wave similarity solution, the simple model on radiation transport was put forward. The experimental results were analyzed using this model, and analysis basically agreed with the experiments.

Abstract:We report recent experimental results from HL-2A and KSTAR on ELM mitigation by supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI). Cold particle deposition within the pedestal by SMBI is verified in both machines. The signatures of ELM mitigation by SMBI are an ELM frequency increase and ELM amplitude decrease. These persist for an SMBI influence time tau(I). Here, tau(I) is the time for the SMBI influenced pedestal profile to refill. An increase in f(ELM)(SMBI)/f(ELM)(0) and a decrease in the energy loss per ELM Delta W-ELM were achieved in both machines. Physical insight was gleaned from studies of density and v(Phi) (toroidal rotation velocity) evolution, particle flux and turbulence spectra, divertor heat load. The characteristic gradients of the pedestal density soften and a change in v(Phi) was observed during a tau(I) time. The spectra of the edge particle flux Gamma similar to <(v) over tilde (r)(n) over tilde (e)> and density fluctuation with and without SMBI were measured in HL-2A and in KSTAR, respectively. A clear phenomenon observed is the decrease in divertor heat load during the tau(I) time in HL-2A. Similar results are the profiles of saturation current density J(sat) with and without SMBI in KSTAR. We note that tau(I)/tau(p) (particle confinement time) is close to similar to 1, although there is a large difference in individual tau(I) between the two machines. This suggests that tau(I) is strongly related to particle-transport events. Experiments and analysis of a simple phenomenological model support the important conclusion that ELM mitigation by SMBI results from an increase in higher frequency fluctuations and transport events in the pedestal.

Abstract:Supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) was first proposed and demonstrated on the HL-1 tokamak and was successfully developed and used on HL-1M. Recently, new results of SMBI experiments were obtained by increasing the gas pressure from 0.5 to over 1.0 MPa. A stair-shaped density increment was obtained with high-pressure multi-pulse SMBI that was similar to the density evolution behaviour during multi-pellet injection. This demonstrated the effectiveness of SMBI as a promising fuelling tool for steady-state operation. The penetration depth and injection speed of the high-pressure SMBI were roughly measured from the contour plot of the Ha emission intensity. It was shown that injected particles could penetrate into the core region of the plasma. The penetration speed of high-pressure SMBI particles in the plasma was estimated to be about 1200 m s(-1). In addition, clusters within the beam may play an important role in the deeper injection.

Abstract:Abstract A shattered pellet injector (SPI) based on in situ technology was developed in the HL-2A tokamak. In this paper, the basic principle of pellet formation is introduced, the mechanism of a SPI is described in detail, and test results are presented. Bench test experimental results show that reliable formation and acceleration of a large nitrogen pellet (diameter of ∼3.5 × 4 mm) were obtained. A double-impact tube was developed and tested for effective and reliable shattering of the pellet.

Abstract:In order to study the physical mechanism and control strategy of disruption mitigation, and to alleviate the destructive effects during disruption, a multiple shattered pellet injection system (multi-SPI) was designed for the HL-3 tokamak. This paper describes the preliminary engineering design of the multi-SPI, and the thermal analysis results of the pellet preparation system. In-situ condensation and propellant acceleration technologies are adopted for the multi-SPI. Three pellets can be prepared at one time and injected individually or simultaneously, one of which is 7 mm and the other two are 5.5 mm in diameter. As the key component of multi-SPI, thermal analysis of the pellet preparation system is given by ANSYS. Results show that the temperature distribution of the heat sink is relatively uniform, and the temperature of standby guns remains lower than the working gas triple point when the other guns were fired. The results verify that the structure design of the pellet preparation system can satisfy the design requirements.
