Abstract:The C-H bond activation of methane mediated by a prototypical heteronuclear metal-oxide cluster, [Al2Mg2O5](•+), was investigated by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) in conjunction with high-level quantum mechanical calculations. Experimentally, hydrogen-atom abstraction from methane by the cluster ion [Al2Mg2O5](•+) takes place at ambient conditions. As to the mechanism, according to our computational findings, both the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and the conventional hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) are feasible and compete with each other. This is in distinct contrast to the [XYO2](+) (X, Y = Mg, Al, Si) cluster oxide ions which activate methane exclusively via the PCET route (Li, J.; Zhou, S.; Zhang, J.; Schlangen, M.; Weiske, T.; Usharani, D.; Shaik, S.; Schwarz, H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016, 138, 7973-7981). The electronic origins of the mechanistically rather complex reactivity scenarios of the [Al2Mg2O5](•+)/CH4 couple were elucidated. For the PCET mechanism, in which the Lewis acid-base pair [Al(+)-O(-)] of the cluster acts as the active site, a clear correlation has been established between the nature of the transition state, the corresponding barrier height, the Lewis acidity-basicity of the [M(+)-O(-)] unit, as well as the bond order of the M(+)-O(-) bond. Also addressed is the role of the spin and charge distributions of a terminal oxygen radical site in the direct HAT route. The knowledge of the factors that control the reactivity of PCET and HAT pathways not only deepens our mechanistic understanding of metal-oxide mediated C-H bond activation but may also provide guidance for the rational design of catalysts.

Abstract:The gas-phase reactions of [TiAlO4](+) with methane have been explored by using FTICR mass spectrometry complemented by quantum chemical calculations. Interestingly, the [TiAlO4](+) ions can activate two methane molecules continuously. Moreover, in contrast to the previous reports on gas-phase methane activation by metal oxide clusters, in which hydrogen-atom transfer and/or proton-coupled electron transfer prevail, a hydride transfer process dominates the [TiAlO4](+)/CH4 system. The associated electronic origins have been discussed, and such a terminal metal-oxo active center as addressed in the [TiAlO4](+) cluster has proven to be promising in the construction of efficient catalysts concerning methane conversion.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) controllable activation is the key process for CH4 upgrading, which is sensitive to the surface oxygen species. The high thermal conductivity and superb thermal stability of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheet makes a single transition metal atom doped hexagonal boron nitride monolayer (TM-BN) possible to be a promising material for catalyzing methane partial oxidation. The performances of 24 TM-BNs for CH4 activation are systematically investigated during the CH4 oxidation by means of first-principles computation. The calculation results unravel the periodic variation trends for the stability of TM-BN, the adsorption strength and the kind of O2 species, and the resulting CH4 activation performance on TM-BNs. The formed peroxide O22− of which the OO bond could be broken and O− anions are found to be reactive oxygen species for CH4 activation under the mild conditions. It is found that the redox potential of TM center, including its valence electron number, coordination environment, and the work function of TM-BN, is the underlying reason for the formation of different oxygen species and the resulting activity for CH4 oxidative dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Transition‐metal based catalysts have been widely employed to catalyze partial oxidation of light alkanes. Recently, metal‐free hexagonal‐boron nitride (h‐BN) has emerged as a promising catalyst for the oxidation of CH4 to HCHO and CO; however, the intricate catalytic surface of h‐BN at molecular and electronic levels remains inadequately understood. Key questions include how electron‐deficient boron atoms in h‐BN reduce O2, and whether the partial oxidation of methane over h‐BN exhibits similarities to traditional transition‐metal catalysts. In our study, we computationally‐mapped in‐detail the surface catalytic‐space of h‐BN for methane oxidation. We considered different structures of h‐BN and show that these structures contain numerous sites for O2 binding and therefore various routes for methane oxidation are possible. The activation barriers for methane oxidation via various paths vary from ~83 to ~123 kcal mol−1. To comprehend the differences in activation barriers, we employed geometrical, orbital and distortion/interaction analysis (DIA). Orbital analysis reveals that methane activation over h‐BN in presence of dioxygen follows a standard hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. It is also shown that water plays an intriguing role in reducing the barrier for HCHO and CO formation by acting as a bridge.

Abstract:Encapsulation of metal nanoparticles with porous oxide shells is a successful strategy to design catalysts with high catalytic performance. We suggest an alternative route to cover metal nanoparticles with two-dimensional (2D) material shells such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), in which active metal components are stabilized by the outer shells and meanwhile catalytic reactions occur at interfaces between cores and shells through feasible intercalation of the 2D material covers. As an illustration, Ni nanoparticles encapsulated with few-layer h-BN shells were constructed and applied in syngas methanation. Ni@h-BN core–shell nanocatalysts exhibit enhanced methanation activity, higher resistance to particle sintering, and suppressed carbon deposition and Ni loss in reactions. Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a layered inorganic nonmetallic material has been widely used. Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) modification can trigger exfoliation and afford abundant B–OH active sites at edge of h-BN, which can enhance methane activation ability. Introducing tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) to h-BN produces a similar effect, because doping WO 3 into h-BN resulted in electron transfer to N, inducing fracture of B–N bond, resulting in N vacancy (triboron center), exposing more B sites and promoting the generation of B–OH. Significantly, the introduction of WO 3 on the modified h-BN dramatically increased the concentration of B–OH compared with the unmodified h-BN, because H 2 O 2 modification weakened B–N bond. By means of XRD, TEM, XPS,EPR, FT-IR, it is proved that the high concentration of B–OH active sites contributed to activating C–H bond, thus methane conversion and CO and H 2 selectivity were significantly improved.

Abstract:Although hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has recently been identified as a highly efficient catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) reaction, the reaction mechanisms, especially regarding radical chemistry of this system, remain elusive. Now, the first direct experimental evidence of gas-phase methyl radicals (CH3.) in the ODHP reaction over boron-based catalysts is achieved by using online synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectroscopy (SVUV-PIMS), which uncovers the existence of gas-phase radical pathways. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the results demonstrate that propene is mainly generated on the catalyst surface from the C-H activation of propane, while C-2 and C-1 products can be formed via both surface-mediated and gas-phase pathways. These observations provide new insights towards understanding the ODHP reaction mechanisms over boron-based catalysts.

Abstract:Direct nonoxidative conversion of methane to ethylene, aromatics and hydrogen has been recognized as an attractive utilization of natural gas, but qualified catalyst faces huge challenges. Most catalysts reported for this reaction are deactivated fast by carbon deposition. Herein, we demonstrated an active, selective and stable molten tungsten-indium bimetal catalyst entrapped in a silica gel, offering 11% methane conversion in single pass, with C-2/C-3-C-5/aromatics hydrocarbon distributions of 36%/4%/54% at 950 ?. A little carbon was formed during reaction, but spontaneously floated onto tungsten-indium liquid surface and moved onto silica surface thereby leaving the tungsten-indium liquid surface clean. No deactivation was thus observed even after 120-hour testing. Theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that methane is converted into ethane on indium clusters, followed by gas-phase thermal cracking to ethylene and tandem aromatization on tungsten clusters to aromatics. The high stability and controllable hydrocarbon distribution promise our catalyst great potential of practical applications.

Abstract:The selective functionalization of methane under ambient conditions remains a formidable challenge for chemists. While most studies have focused on transition metal complexes, much less attention has been devoted to molecular complexes based on non-metal elements, despite them being more sustainable and less environmentally impactful. Here, we report that an N-heterocyclic carbene-stabilized borenium complex can activate methane under relatively mild conditions. The resulting methylborenium complex can readily transfer the methyl group to catecholborane (HBcat), which can lead to a synthetic cycle for the conversion of methane to MeBcat. Both experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies suggest that the C–H bonds of methane are activated via a σ-bond metathesis pathway. Such direct aliphatic C–H borylation can be extended to other alkanes, such as ethane and octane. The formed alkylborenium complexes can react with terminal alkynes via 1,2-alkylboration to install both the alkyl and boryl functionalities onto organic scaffolds.

Selective Monoborylation of Methane by a Mono Bipyridyl‐Nickel(II) Hydride Catalyst

Abstract:We report the development of an earth-abundant metal catalyst for methane C‒H borylation. The post-synthetic metalation of bipyridine-functionalized zirconium metal−organic framework (MOF) with NiBr2, followed by treatment of NaEt3BH affords MOF-supported monomeric bipyridyl-nickel(II) dihydride species via active site isolation. The heterogeneous and recyclable nickel catalyst selectively borylates methane at 200 oC using pinacolborane (HBpin) to afford CH3Bpin in 61% yield with a turnover number (TON) up to 1388. The confinement of the active NiH2-species within the uniformly porous MOF allows selective monoborylation of methane via shape-selective catalysis by preventing the formation of sterically encumbered overborylated products. Unlike MOF-Ni catalyst, its homogeneous control is almost inactive in methane borylation due to its intermolecular decomposition. Our mechanistic investigation, including spectroscopic, kinetic, and control experiments, as well as DFT calculations, revealed that stabilizing mononuclear bipyridyl-nickel dihydride and diboryl species by MOF is crucial for achieving efficient methane borylation via turnover-limiting σ-bond metathesis. This work shows promise in designing MOF-based abundant metal catalysts for the chemoselective functionalization of methane and other inert molecules into valuable chemicals.

Abstract:The oxidation of methane to methanol is a pathway to utilizing this relatively abundant, inexpensive energy resource. Here we report a new catalyst, bent mono(mu-oxo)dinickel anchored on an internal surface of micropores,which is active for direct oxidation. It is synthesized from the direct loading of a nickel precursor to the internal surface of micropores of ZSM5 following activation in O-2. Ni 2p(3/2) of this bent mono(mu-oxo)dinickel species formed on the internal surface of ZSMS exhibits a unique photoemission feature, which distinguishes the mono(mu-oxo)dinickel from NiO nanoparticles. The formation of the mono(mu-oxo)dinickel species was confirmed with X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). This mono(mu-oxo)dinickel species is active for the direct oxidation of methane to methanol under the mild condition of a temperature as low as 150 degrees C in CH4 at 1 bar. In-situ studies using UV-vis, XANES, and EXAFS suggest that this bent mono(mu-oxo)dinickel species is the active site for the direct oxidation of methane to methanol. The energy barrier of this direct oxidation of methane is 83.2 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to methanol (DMTM) under mild conditions is one of the most attractive and challenging processes in catalysis. By using density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the catalytic performance of Cu single atoms supported on O-doped BN in different coordination environments as a DMTM catalyst. Computations demonstrate that Cu coordinated with one O atom and two N atoms on O-doped BN (Cu1/O1N2-BN) exhibited the highest catalytic activity for DMTM at room temperature with quite a low rate-determining step energy barrier of 0.46 eV. The moderate adsorption of *O atoms, selective stabilization of CH3 species, and easy desorption of CH3OH are responsible for the unique activity of Cu1/O1N2-BN for DMTM. In addition, the adsorption free energy of *O atoms produced by the dissociation of O-donor molecules is a suitable descriptor for predicting the catalytic performance of materials and accelerating the discovery of catalysts for DMTM. This work opens new avenues to develop highly efficient catalysts for DMTM.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalyst has recently been reported to be highly selective in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) for olefin production. In addition to propene, ethylene also forms with much higher overall selectivities to C2-products than to C1-products. In this work, we report that the reaction pathways over the h-BN catalyst are different from the V-based catalysts in ODHP. Oxidative coupling reaction of methyl, an intermediate from the cleavage of C─C bond of propane, contributes to the high selectivities to C2-products, leading to more C2-products than C1-products over the h-BN catalyst. This work not only provides insight into the reaction mechanisms involved in ODHP over the boron-based catalysts but also sheds light on the selective oxidation of alkanes such as direct upgrading of methane via oxidative upgrading to ethylene or CH x O y on boron-based catalysts.

Abstract:Direct methane conversion to value-added oxygenate products is an important approach for the effective utilization of CH 4 . However, selective C─H bond activation of CH 4 remains challenging. Herein, we investigated the methane-to-methanol conversion mechanism on MN 4 -embedded graphene (M = V, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) via density functional theory computations. We found that the Cu@N 4 graphene and Ni@N 4 graphene catalysts showed an outstanding C─H bond activation with low barrier energy of 0.45 and 0.28 eV, respectively. In addition, a detailed investigation of the electronic proprieties of the metal site, the CH 3 intermediate adsorption energy and C─H bond cleavage barrier energy demonstrates that the d-band center of metal can be a descriptor for C─H bond cleavage activity and reveal a thermodynamic-kinetic relationship: thus, the high affinity to CH 3 intermediate led to facile activation of C─H bond. Overall, this work provides a better understanding of graphene-supported single metal atom activity and selectivity toward methane oxidation, facilitating the design and fabrication of new 2D materials supported by single-atom catalysts for selective methane conversion.
