Radio Continuum Morphology of Southern Seyfert Galaxies

Abstract:We present radio observations for 29 southern Seyfert galaxies selected from a volume limited sample with cz<3600 km s^-1, and declination delta<0degr. Objects with declination -30degr<delta<0degr were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 6 cm (4.9 GHz) and objects with delta<-30degr were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.5 cm (8.6 GHz). Both the VLA and the ATCA observations have a resolution of ~1arcsec. These new observations cover more than 50% of the southern sample with all but two of the 29 objects detected above our limit of 0.15 mJy. Combining these data with data available from the literature gives almost 85% coverage of the southern sample and further expands the radio observations of a distance limited sample by 22%. Collecting additional sources from the literature, consisting of known Seyferts with cz < 4600 km s^-1, we find that 38% of the sources are unresolved at arcsecond resolution, and 34% have linear radio structure. Our results expand upon and are consistent with earlier studies. We confirm a correlation between the size of the radio structure and the radio luminosity. A comparison between Seyfert types 1 and 2 finds that type 2s tend to have a larger linear size. There is no statistically significant difference in radio power between types 1 and 2, although all the most powerful objects appear to be Seyfert 2's. No significant difference has been found in the spectral indices.

Abstract:We describe the S 1 -action on the Quot-scheme Quot(E n ) associated to the trivial bundle E n = CP 1 × C n . In particlular, the topology of the S 1 -fixed-point components in Quot(E n ) and the S 1 -weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S 1 fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the S 1 -fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S 1 -equivariant Euler class eS1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down eS1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:In order to improve the disadvantage of high driving voltage and low driving strength,that exists in current micro-mirror.Based on bi-mental effect,an adjustable focal length optical adaptive micro-mirror array is machined.On silicon,micro-machining processes such as thermal oxygenation,photolithography,KOH wet etching and sputtering aluminum film are experimented.The gained 4×4 array have the thickness of 50μm,and aluminum film is 100nm.Dynamic performance of adjustable focal length micro-mirror is tested,using laser digital wave-front interferometer.Experiment results demonstrate that,the micro-mirror can produce continuous deformation with the maximum deformation of 7.91μm in the arrange of 0～11V.

Abstract:We describe the applications of localization methods, in particular the functorial localization formula, in the proofs of several conjectures from string theory. The functorial localization formula pushes the computations on complicated moduli spaces to simple moduli spaces. It is a key technique in the proof of the general mirror formula, the proof of the Hori-Vafa formula for explicit expressions of basic hypergeornetric series of homogeneous manifolds, and the proof of the Marino-Vafa formula for Hodge integrals. The proposal of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow of mirror symmetry will also be discussed.

Abstract:As to minimize size of the measurement system of large size and ultra-long focal length lens, two mirrors are used to change light path. In this case, installation error of the two mirrors added may be a large obstacle to accurate measurement of ultra-long focal length lens. For the sake of analyzing how installation error of two mirrors infect the angle of Moiré stripes on receiver, Moiré stripes are understood as parallel lines which composed of point light source with certain light-path vector. This approach proposed uses the calculation formula from mirror deflection angle to the reflector unit normal vector, and the matrix form of the law of reflection, to calculate the relationship matrix from vector of incident light to vector of exit light. Based on unit normal vector of two mirrors, incident light-path vector, exit light-path vector, and analytic geometry, equation of line on which image of point light source place can be presented, so we can get the angle of Moiré stripes on receiver and so is the angle error caused by installation error of the two mirrors added into light path. In addition, the angle error of Moiré stripes is calculated theoretically in 49 different situations of small mirrors deflection smaller than 1 degree. The results indicate that the installation error of the two mirrors should be taken into consideration. A new method by using autocollimator to adjust the installation error of the two mirrors is proposed, installation error of the two mirrors can be controlled to lower than 1" through this method. Moiré stripes angle error should be better than (10-4) order of magnitude in this situation. Experimental results show that Moiré stripes angle measurement error is 0.005 degree, which fully illustrates the effect of mirrors adjustment when this system is used for the measurement of ultra-long focal length.

Abstract:A novel adjustable focal-length optical adaptive micro-mirror based on bi-mental effect is presented. Compared with traditional deformable micro-mirror, micro-mirror fabricated by this method has the advantage of low driving voltage and large driving force. Besides, it is easy to be fabricated. Micro-machining processes such as oxygenation, photolithography, chemical etching and sputtering are experimented. A 4 × 4 bi-metal adjustable focal-length micro-mirror arrays have been completed. Each unit has an area of 3 mm × 3 mm with the thickness of silicon 60μm and aluminum film 150 nm. Deformable mirror area covers 79% of the total mirror area which is 100%. Dynamic performance of adjustable focal-length micro-mirror is tested using laser wave-front interferometer. Experiment results demonstrate that the micro-mirror can produce uni-directional continuous deformation with the maximum deformation of 15.8 and nonlinearity lag of 27%. It can work at 0-2.5 V with an adjustable focal length ranging from ∞ to 0.036 m.

Abstract:This document supplements an experimental Jitter / Max/MSP collection of implementation patches that set its goal to simulate an alchemical process for a person standing in front of a mirror-like screen while interacting with it. The work involved takes some patience and has three stages to go through. At the final stage the "alchemist" in the mirror wearing sharp-colored gloves (for motion tracking) is to extract the final ultimate shining sparkle (FFT-based visualization) in the nexus of the hands. The more the hands are apart, the large the sparkle should be. Moving hands around should make the sparkle follow. To achieve the desired visual effect and the feedback mechanism, the Jitter lattice-based intensional programming model is used to work on 4-dimensional (A+R+G+B) video matrices and sound signals in order to apply some well-known alchemical techniques to the video at real-time to get a mirror effect and accompanying transmutation and transformation stages of the video based on the stability of the sound produced for some duration of time in real-time. There is an accompanying video of the result with the interaction with the tool and the corresponding programming patches.

Abstract: Motivated by the recent work of Kachru-Vafa in string theory, we study in Part A of this paper, certain identities involving modular forms, hypergeometric series, and more generally series solutions to Fuchsian equations. The identity which arises in string theory is the simpliest of its kind. There are nontrivial generalizations of the identity which appear new. We give many such examples -- all of which arise in mirror symmetry for algebraic K3 surfaces. In Part B, we study the integrality property of certain $q$-series, known as mirror maps, which arise in mirror symmetry.
