By proactively monitoring traffic load, the algorithms achieve network-wide energy saving by re-adjusting CM's bonding groups and shutting down under-utilized upstream/downstream ports on the CMTS. Abstract:The Internet explosion makes energy consumption of the ICT sector a global concern. Nowadays, the power consumption of access networks increases rapidly due to the rollout of broadband services. Cable access networks provide Internet access over the existing cable television systems. Among all wired access networks, they have the second biggest user base, which is still growing fast due to the release of the new industry standard, DOCSIS 3.0. Therefore, we expect that cable access networks will play an important role in the ICT sector of future smart cities. In order to boost up bidirectional throughput, DOCSIS 3.0 introduces the channel bonding technology, which could lead to increased power consumption if not properly managed. In this article, we present a few energy-saving algorithms that could be used by the cable operators to improve the energy efficiency of cable access networks using channel bonding. The discussions cover both the network-wide energy-saving algorithm and the customer-side energy-saving algorithm, and provide investigations on the trade-offs between energy-saving and other network performance metrics, including packet delay and protocol overhead. Our numerical results suggest that effective energy saving can be achieved in wideband cable access networks with the proposed algorithms, and the packet delay and protocol overhead can be reduced if we choose the key parameters properly.

Abstract:We propose a traffic-aware and cooperative approach to achieve energy-saving in Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) networks that support DOCSIS 3.0 standard. The approach incorporates a two-step operation that consists of two algorithms, one for the Cable Modem (CM) side and the other for the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) side. To avoid transition overheads, we design both algorithms with the consideration of energy-to-NoC (Number of Changes) tradeoff and try to minimize the number of Dynamic Bonding Change (DBC) operations while saving the energy. Simulations verify the effectiveness of the algorithms by using a realistic HFC network traffic model, and the results demonstrate significant saving on the ON-time (energy consumption) of the CMs' channels and the CMTS' ports.

For the CM-side operation, we first propose a basic algorithm that can optimize the CMs' energy efficiency, regardless of significant increase of the packet delay and the number of operation changes (NoOC). We then propose two modified approaches to reduce the packet delay and NoOC while saving energy. Simulations with these algorithms show 37.5%-42.2% energy saving on the CM side, compared to the traditional case where the CMs' operation statuses are static. Next, we propose a CMTS-side energy-saving algorithm to find the actual connection mapping between the CM channels and CMTS ports. The proposed algorithm tries to support CM connections with minimal numbers of CMTS ports. To further improve the energy efficiency of the CMTS, we design a readjustment approach that can reorganize CM connections on CMTS ports based on their loads. Simulation results show that 31.08%-32.61% energy saving can be achieved on the CMTS in total. Hence, the proposed algorithms achieve effective energy saving on both the CM and CMTS sides.

Abstract:Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks support broadband Internet access with the existing cable TV systems. Recent advances on HFC networks have demonstrated effective improvements on the customers' access speeds with the channel-bonding technology. In this paper, we develop a novel energy-efficient traffic scheduling algorithm for the HFC networks that support channel bonding. The proposed algorithm is compliant with the newly-released DOCSIS 3.0 standard.We come up with a system model of the channel-bonding transmitters (TXs) on a Cable Modem (CM), and then define several operation modes for them. At the beginning of each scheduling cycle, the proposed algorithm adjusts the TXs' operation modes based on the traffic status. Both analytical analysis and numerical simulations are then developed to investigate the energy-saving and delay introduced by the algorithm. The results on energy-saving indicate that the energy-consumption of the TXs scales almost linearly with the input traffic load and effective energy-saving can be achieved. We also investigate the tradeoff between the energy-saving and the average delay to optimize the parameters for the energy-efficient scheduling, and to make sure that the traffic will not experience significant delay increase due to the energy-saving operations.

Abstract:We propose an advanced algorithm to achieve coordinated CMTS-side energy-saving in a HFC network supporting DOCSIS 3.0 standard. Based on traffic information, the algorithm grooms as many as cable modems (CMs) on a minimal number of CMTS ports as possible, and put the rest of its ports to sleep for energy-saving. With network simulations using a realistic CM traffic model, we demonstrate over 31.5% saving on the ON-time for CMTS ports. We also investigate the tradeoff between the energy-saving and the number of CM change operations, and the results show that the algorithm can control the number of CM changes with a preset readjustment threshold.

Abstract:Access networks, in particular, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment, are a significant source of energy consumption for wireline operators. Replacing large monolithic DSLAMs with smaller remote DSLAM units closer to customers can reduce the energy consumption as well as increase the reach of the access network. This paper attempts to formalize the design and optimization of the "last mile" wireline access network with energy as one of the costs to be minimized. In particular, the placement of remote DSLAM units needs to be optimized. We propose solutions for two scenarios. For the scenario where an existing all-copper network from the central office to the customers is to be transformed into a fiber-copper network with remote DSLAM units, we present optimal polynomial-time solutions. In the green-field scenario, both the access network layout and the placement of remote DSLAM units must be determined. We show that this problem is NP-complete. We present an optimal ILP formulation and also design an efficient heuristic-based approach to build a power-and-cost-optimized access network. Our heuristic-based approach yields results that are very close to optimal. We show how the power consumption of the access network can be reduced by carefully laying the access network and introducing remote DSLAM units.

Abstract:Vectoring is a well-known technique to mitigate multi-user interference in the downlink Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) transmission. While effective in canceling interference, vectoring does incur major computational overhead, resulting in significant energy consumption when the number of lines is large. To facilitate energy efficient transmission, a mechanism called discontinuous operation (DO) has been recently proposed. In this paper, we consider the key resource allocation problems in DSL: given the transmission opportunities, determine the optimal DO transmission scheme, and optimally adjust an existing DO transmission scheme for energy saving consideration. We formulate these problems and propose efficient real-time algorithms to solve them to global optimality. Simulation results are shown to demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:High capacity networks are needed for enormous quantity of internet traffic, which is driven by both the exponential growth of the number of people using the internet and the ongoing introduction of new high-bandwidth requiring applications. Combining optical and wireless technologies is a new and promising access network solution. The energy efficiency of telecommunication networks is therefore attracting increasing attention today than in the past. This study is aimed at evaluating energy efficiency of optical-wireless access network which combines Passive Optical Network (PON) and Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) networks into one. The network was designed using Optimum Network Engineering Tool (OPNET) modeler software. Traffic was generated using inbuilt tools provided in the OPNET modeler software. Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm was applied on the network and simulation was carried out using the simulation tool provided by OPNET to evaluate the effect of the DBA algorithm on the energy consumption and efficiency in the network. The findings showed energy utilization of 430 watt-second when DBA algorithm was applied on the access network as against 700 watt-second when it was not activated. This shows a 38.6% energy conservation. It was concluded that with the application of energy saving techniques to combined optical-wireless access network, substantial energy could be conserved even in the presence of heavy traffic without compromising the quality of service of the access network.

Abstract:Low-delay and high energy-efficiency (defined as the transmitted bits per unit energy consumption) are highly expected in next general wireless networks. The existing green technologies of Internet Protocol (IP) have been studied in the wired and wireless networks, respectively. However, the joint optimization of the cross-networks energy-efficiency from the wired wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks to the next generation wireless networks remains unexplored. In this paper, we formulate a joint optimization to integrate the energy efficiency across networks. Specifically, each base station (BS) first collects the uplink user data. We then propose a novel joint cross-networks scheduling and routing algorithm according to the wireless channel quality of users, user rate, and the topology constraint. The IP packets are then delivered to the targeted users within the limit of delay. Based on the tradeoff between delay and energy efficiency, we achieve energy efficient and performance guaranteed cross-networks. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is verified by extensive simulations.

Abstract:We develop a novel QoS-aware energy-efficient upstream traffic scheduling algorithm for channel-bonding cable modems (CMs) in hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks. Based on their QoS requirements, the algorithm sends incoming packets to different priority queues and controls channel-bonding transmitters (TXs) to forward them. Based on a vacation M/M/n queuing model, we analyze the algorithm's performance with a three-dimensional Markov chain and derive the analytical expressions of packet delay and power consumption.

Abstract:The digital Subscriber Line (DSL) remains an important component of heterogeneous networking, especially in historic city-centers, where using optical fibre is less realistic. Recently, the power consumption has become an important performance metric in telecommunication due to the associated environmental issues. In the recent bonding model, customer sites have been equipped with two/four copper pairs, which may be exploited for designing grouped spatial modulation (SM) aiming for reducing the power consumption and mitigating the stubborn crosstalk in DSL communications. Explicitly, we view the two pair copper pairs equipped for each user as a group and propose an energy efficient transmission scheme based on grouped SM strategy for the upstream DSL systems, which is capable of reducing the power consumption of the upstream transmitters by activating a single copper line of each user. More especially, in order to compensate for the potential bit-rate reduction imposed by reducing the number of activated lines, the proposed scheme implicitly delivers ``virtual bits" via activating/deactivating the lines in addition to the classic modulation scheme. This is particularly beneficial in the DSL context, because the cross-talk imposed by activating several lines may swamp the desired signal. Furthermore, a pair of near-optimal soft turbo detection schemes are proposed for exploiting the unique properties of the DSL channel in order to eliminate the error propagation problem of SM detection routinely encountered in wireless channels. Both the attainable energy-efficiency and the achievable Bit Error Ratio (BER) are investigated. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed group-based SM is capable of outperforming the vectoring scheme both in terms of its energy efficiency for all the examined loop lengths and transmit powers.

Abstract:Since telecom networks consume a large (and increasing) amount of energy, "green" strategies are desirable to help Service Providers (SP) operate their networks and provision services more energy-efficiently. In this study, we focus on operating optical backbone networks with green strategies. We consider a typical optical backbone network architecture, and minimize the Operational Power for service provisioning following a Traffic Engineering (TE) approach. Service provisioning is schematically decomposed as multiple serial operations, and power efficiency is analyzed for both optical bypass and traffic grooming. We propose a novel auxiliary graph, which can capture the flow of operations and their associated power. Based on the auxiliary graph, we present a Power-Aware scheme that minimizes the Operational Power. Simulation results show reduced power consumption by our scheme, in comparison to a generic traffic grooming approach.

Therefore, this paper concerns about the BS (base station) energy saving issue, for most energy consumption of the communication network comes from the BSs and the core network. Particularly, we consider dynamically turning off certain BSs when the network traffic is low. Centralized and decentralized implementations are investigated. Simulations demonstrate the energy efficiency of the proposed algorithms and the tradeoff between energy saving and coverage guarantee.
Energy consumption modeling and analysis for short-reach optical transmissions using irregular LDPC codes

Abstract:As the transmission rate of data center (DC) related short-reach optical transmissions quickly increases to keep up with internet services' data demand pace, advanced FEC technology starts to establish its key role in short reach optical transmission systems. Coding strategy using Quasi-Cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes with hard-decision (HD) decoders stands out due to its excellent error correction ability and simple hardware implementation. Meanwhile, with the introduction of green communication concept and increasingly extensive applications of DC, energy consumption of short-reach links has become an urgent problem to be studied. Based on tanner-graph, energy consumption models of regular LDPC codes' HD decoding circuits over AWGN channel have been proposed. In this work, for the first time, we introduce energy consumption of optical transmitters and characteristics of short reach optical channels into energy consumption modeling. Besides, probability distributions of flipping operation as well as bit errors during irregular QC-LDPC codes' HD decoding iterations are analytically derived using density evolution algorithm. Based on our proposed model and post-layout circuit simulation, systems' total power when using four QC-LDPC codes in IEEE and 3GPP with Gallager A/B decoders together with the case of using no FEC are analyzed in two typical scenarios. Numerical results show that, in short range scenario with slight bandwidth limit, uncoded strategy is much more energy-saving than all adopted LDPC-coded strategies in 50Gbaud OOK and 25Gbaud PAM4 transmissions. While in severely band-limited case when FEC is necessary, a tradeoff between energy consumption of transmitters and decoders occurs in 70Gbaud OOK and 35Gbaud PAM4 transmissions. Besides, LDPC codes with longer length at similar rate are proved to consume less power for their better error correction ability. And in long range scenario, power differences among coding strategies grow significantly when pre-bit error rate (BER) approaches their error correction threshold, reflecting the great influence of error correction threshold on the energy consumption of LDPC decoders. Among all adopted coding strategies, a (19200, 15872) LDPC code with Gallager B decoder consumes minimum power in both two scenarios. However, it is also found that decoding algorithm minimizing the total power differs at different pre-BER if we concentrate on decoding algorithm, justifying the significance of our modeling in minimizing system energy consumption.

Abstract:Energy consumption of communication networks is growing very fast due to the rapidly increasing traffic demands. It is important and valuable to find a way to save power for such networking systems. In this paper, we propose a Cross-Layer Optimization and Design (CLOD) approach to improve the energy efficiency of Internet Protocol (IP) over Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) backbone networks under QoS constraints. CLOD makes use of the skew spatial distribution (i.e. 80-20 law) of traffic demands to construct the virtual topology of IP layer with a consideration of the cross-layer resource constraints. Also, CLOD takes advantage of the constraint-based routing to satisfy the QoS constraints in terms of allowed maximum hop count and allowed maximum link utilization. Taking into account the connection between base network design and network operation, CLOD dimensions the base network by using pattern of network operation and optimizes network power consumption by reconfiguring network to adapt traffic variation and the available resources. Simulation results indicate that CLOD can save power significantly and achieve near energy-proportional networks. In addition, an analysis on trade-off performance between the hop count and power consumption is given.
