Abstract:We develop a theoretical model to estimate the BER evolutions in optical translucent networks in a more accurate way. The model calculates the BER increment at each regeneration site with considerations of reshaping nonlinearity and jitter effect for 40 Gb/s signals. Based on the model, we propose a novel translucent optical network infrastructure that includes all-optical 2R regenerators and uses mixed operation of 1R/2R/3R regenerators for cost and power consumption savings. Simulation results show that our proposed infrastructure reduces the number of O/E/O 3R regenerators to less than 50% and achieves effective power saving.

The performance of the algorithms is investigated with simulations in ring and grid network topologies. Simulation results indicate that the algorithms can effectively reduce the number of O/E/O 3R regenerators, leading to less power consumption on signal regeneration and green network design. Among the algorithms, the maximum segment length wavelength assignment (MSL-WA) approach further reduces regenerator numbers, with the cost of placement readjustments.

Abstract:Translucent networks utilize sparse placements of optical-electronic-optical (O/E/O) 3R (reamplification, reshaping, and retiming) regenerators to improve the cost effectiveness and energy efficiency of wavelength-routed optical transport networks. In this paper, we show that the energy cost of a translucent network can be further reduced by leveraging the energy efficiency of all-optical 2R (reamplification and reshaping) regenerators. We propose a translucent network infrastructure that uses all-optical 2R regenerators to partially replace O/E/O 3R regenerators and implements mixed regenerator placements (MRP). We first consider the problem of MRP along a single given path, and propose three path-based impairment-aware MRP algorithms, based on periodic placement, genetic algorithm (GA), and ant colony optimization (ACO). We then address the offline network planning problem and develop a heuristic algorithm. By incorporating with one of the proposed MRP algorithms, the heuristic can achieve joint optimization of MRP and routing and wavelength assignment for high energy efficiency. We design simulations to compare the performance of different offline network planning scenarios and to see which one can provide the best balance between quality of transmission and energy cost. Simulation results show that the algorithm achieves 58.91-73.62% saving on regeneration energy, compared to the traditional scheme without all-optical 2R regenerators. The results also indicate that the joint optimization using the MRP-GA obtains the best network planning in terms of energy efficiency. Finally, we address the problem of online provisioning, and propose several algorithms to serve dynamic lightpath requests in translucent networks with MRP, and implement them in simulations to compare their performance in terms of blocking probability. Simulation results indicate that the online provisioning algorithm that utilizes the combination of the MRP-GA and a multiple MRP scheme achieves - he lowest blocking probability.

Abstract:With the energy consumption increase and the greenhouse effect becomes more and more serious, the energy saving has become the focus in the whole world. At the same time, as the network traffic largely growing, the size and the cost of network equipments keep increasing so that the network cost reduction is also very important. In recent years, the concept of green Internet was proposed to construct an energy-efficient and cost-optimal green network. In this paper, we firstly present the current studies working on the energy saving and cost reduction in multi-granularity optical network that is the convergence between IP network and optical network to support both the low-speed IP data and the high-speed optical transmission. After analyzing the current studies, in our opinion, the traffic grooming mechanism with optical bypass technology is the feasible solution by binding a lot of low-rate IP data into a few of high-speed lightpaths to reduce a lot of electrical ports consumption in IP routers for saving the energy, the waveband switching mechanism is the feasible solution by binding multiple lightpaths into a few of waveband tunnels to save the optical transmitting ports consumption in Multi-Granularity Optical Cross-Connects (MG-OXCs) for reducing the network costs, and the multi-granularity grooming mechanism is the feasible solution by integrating the traffic grooming with the waveband switching to achieve both the energy saving and cost reduction. Based on our opinion, this paper proposes the challenging issues including the network node model, virtual topology design, certain traffic matrix and uncertain traffic matrix for energy saving and cost reduction in multi-granularity optical network, with possible solutions and preliminary simulation results to guide the future work.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate energy-efficient resilience designs for the translucent optical networks using mixed regenerator placement (MRP). We consider both static and dynamic traffic scenarios and aim to provide 100% restoration against single-link failures while minimizing the total energy-cost on regenerators. For static traffic scenarios, we formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) model to solve the energy-efficient p-cycle design for translucent optical networks with MRP. The ILP model optimizes the allocation of working and protection resources jointly under the quality of transmission constraint, with the objective to minimize the total energy cost. A heuristic that can sequentially optimize the p-cycle designs for connections is proposed afterward. We use simulations to evaluate the performance of the algorithms with both uniform and nonuniform traffic models. For dynamic traffic scenarios, we design an algorithm that can handle the setting-up and tearing-down of p-cycles dynamically, according to the time-variant connections. We enhance this algorithm by introducing a reoptimization procedure, which can reassemble existing p-cycles for higher energy efficiency. An ILP model is formulated and solved for the p-cycle reoptimization. We then consider two reoptimization scenarios: (1) on demand (p-cycle-oDRO) and (2) on schedule (p-cycle-oSRO). In addition to the link-based p-cycle, we also study the path-based shared backup path protection scheme.

Abstract:We design green TDM-WDM hybrid PON networks to satisfy the increasing demand on broadband access. We develop a novel model and propose an effective strategy to minimize the cost and hence to save the cost of the upgrading PON networks. Mixed integer linear programming model is designed to upgrade the capacity of the networks by optimizing upgrading line-rates, add new wavelengths and the optimal splitter location based on the locations of the ONUs and the OLT. The studied case shows the attractive properties of our effective strategy.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel scheme which can efficiently reduce the energy consumption of Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) in Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) Passive Optical Networks (PONs) such as EPON and GPON. Currently, OLTs consume a significant amount of energy in PON, which is one of the major FTTx technologies. To be environmentally friendly, it is desirable to reduce energy consumption of OLT as much as possible; such requirement becomes even more urgent as OLT keeps increasing its provisioning data rate, and higher data rate provisioning usually implies higher energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient OLT structure which guarantees services of end users with the smallest number of power-on OLT line cards. More specifically, we adapt the number of power-on OLT line cards to the real-time incoming traffic. Also, in order to avoid service disruption resulted by powering off OLT line cards, proper optical switches are equipped in OLT to dynamically configure the communications between OLT line cards and ONUs.

Abstract:Optical interconnects are already the dominant technology in large-scale data center networks. However, the high optical loss of many optical components coupled with the low efficiency of laser sources result in high aggregate power requirements for the thousands of optical transceivers used by these networks. As optical interconnects stay always on even as traffic demands ebb and flow, most of this power is wasted. We present LC/DC, a data center network system architecture in which the operating system, the switch, and the optical components are co-designed to achieve energy proportionality. LC/DC capitalizes on the path divergence of data center networks to turn on and off redundant paths according to traffic demand, while maintaining full connectivity. Turning off redundant paths allows the optical transceivers and their electronic drivers to power down and save energy. Maintaining full connectivity hides the laser turn-on delay. At the node layer, intercepting send requests within the OS allows for the NIC's laser turn-on delay to be fully overlapped with TCP/IP packet processing, and thus egress links can remain powered off until needed with zero performance penalty. We demonstrate the feasibility of LC/DC by i) implementing the necessary modifications in the Linux kernel and device drivers, ii) implementing a 10Gbit/s FPGA switch, and iii) performing physical experiments with optical devices and circuit simulations. Our results on university data center traces and models of Facebook and Microsoft data center traffic show that LC/DC saves on average 60% of the optical transceivers power (68% max) at the cost of 6% higher packet delay.

Abstract:Packet Ring tran;port technology combines the simplicity of Ethernet and survivability of SONET and attracts more and more interests of researches. However, electrical processing cost will also be very high as data rate grows to gigabit level, which lowers its efficiency. This paper examines the value of optical bypass approach by minimizing the traffic to be processed in electrical domain. An Integer Linear Program (ILP) formulation is presented to solve this problem and results with different traffic patterns are given, which shows one more wavelength can bring notable electrical processing cost savings in the case of a small number of multiplexed wavelengths in one channel.

Abstract:Higher capacity and larger scales have always been the top targets for the evolution of optical access networks, driven by the ever-increasing demand from the end users. One thing that started to attract wide attention not long ago, but with at least equal importance as capacity and scale, is energy efficiency, a metric essential nowadays as human beings are confronted with severe environmental issues like global warming, air pollution, and so on. Here, different from the conventional energy consumption analysis of tree-topology networks, we propose an effective energy consumption calculation method to compare the energy efficiency of the tree-topology 10 gigabit ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON) and ring-topology time-and wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON), two experimental networks deployed in China. Numerical results show that the ring-topology TWDM-PON networks with 2, 4, 8, and 16 wavelengths are more energy efficient than the tree-topology 10G-EPON, although 10G-EPON consumes less energy. Also, TWDM-PON with four wavelengths is the most energy-efficient network candidate and saves 58.7% more energy than 10G-EPON when fully loaded. Abstract:Despite the bandwidth scaling limit of electrical switching and the high cost of building Clos data center networks (DCNs), the adoption of optical DCNs is still limited. There are two reasons. First, existing optical DCN designs usually face high deployment complexity. Second, these designs are not full-optical and the performance benefit over the non-blocking Clos DCN is not clear. After exploring the design tradeoffs of the existing optical DCN designs, we propose TROD (Threshold Routing based Optical Datacenter), a low-complexity optical DCN with superior performance than other optical DCNs. There are two novel designs in TROD that contribute to its success. First, TROD performs robust topology optimization based on the recurring traffic patterns and thus does not need to react to every traffic change, which lowers deployment and management complexity. Second, TROD introduces tVLB (threshold-based Valiant Load Balance), which can avoid network congestion as much as possible even under unexpected traffic bursts. We conduct simulation based on both Facebook’s real DCN traces and our synthesized highly bursty DCN traces. TROD reduces flow completion time (FCT) by about 1.15- $2.16\times $ compared to Google’s Jupiter DCN, at least $2\times $ compared to other optical DCN designs, and about 2.4- $3.2\times $ compared to expander graph DCN. Compared with the non-blocking Clos, TROD reduces the hop count of the majority packets by one, and could even outperform the non-blocking Clos with proper bandwidth over-provision at the optical layer. Note that TROD can be built with commercially available hardware and does not require host modifications.

Abstract:An energy-efficient and survivable optical access network structure is proposed and investigated. Based on a structure model ofmultilayer-ring, the access network is divided into four layers and modules on a same layer are interconnected as a ring. Therefore, multiple paths are available for optical network units to access an optical line terminal, which not only provides convenience in traffic aggregation, but also guarantees the survivability of network. With this structure, quantities of standby modules are reduced to decrease both capital cost and power cost. Large part of power can also be saved by turning OFF idle modules through traffic aggregation. Moreover, by controlling the optical switches deployed in remote node, elastic reach access is realized as well since amplification is optional on transmission links. Theoretical and numerical analyses indicate that the scheme shows great advantages on power saving, network survivability, as well as the system flexibility, and its energy efficiency performance can be further improved by operating in conjunction with energy-efficient resource scheduling scheme. It provides a potential structure for next generation optical access network.

Abstract:Since telecom networks consume a large (and increasing) amount of energy, "green" strategies are desirable to help Service Providers (SP) operate their networks and provision services more energy-efficiently. In this study, we focus on operating optical backbone networks with green strategies. We consider a typical optical backbone network architecture, and minimize the Operational Power for service provisioning following a Traffic Engineering (TE) approach. Service provisioning is schematically decomposed as multiple serial operations, and power efficiency is analyzed for both optical bypass and traffic grooming. We propose a novel auxiliary graph, which can capture the flow of operations and their associated power. Based on the auxiliary graph, we present a Power-Aware scheme that minimizes the Operational Power. Simulation results show reduced power consumption by our scheme, in comparison to a generic traffic grooming approach.
