Abstract:In this paper we construct a new family of sets via Diophantine approximation, in which the classical examples are endpoints. Our first application is on their Hausdorff dimension. We show a recent result of Ren and Wang, known sharp on orthogonal projections in the plane, is also sharp on $A+cB$, $c\in C$, thus completely settle this ABC sum-product problem. Higher dimensional examples are also discussed. In addition to Hausdorff dimension, we also consider Fourier dimension. In particular, now for every $0\leq t\leq s\leq 1$ we have an explicit construction in $\mathbb{R}$ of Hausdorff dimension $s$ and Fourier dimension $t$, together with a measure $\mu$ that captures both dimensions. In the end we provide a perspective of Knapp's example and treat our Diophantine approximation as its analog in $\mathbb{R}$, that naturally leads to the sharpness of Mockenhaupt-Mitsis-Bak-Seeger Fourier restriction theorem. These are alternatives of recent examples due to Fraser-Hambrook-Ryou. In particular, to deal with the non-geometric case we construct measures of "Hausdorff dimension" $a$ and Fourier dimension $b$, even if $a<b$. This clarifies some difference between sets and measures.

Abstract:We prove level-by-level upper and lower bounds on the strength of determinacy for finite differences of sets in the hyperarithmetical hierarchy in terms of subsystems of finite-and transfinite-order arithmetic, extending the Montalbán-Shore theorem to each of the levels of the Borel hierarchy beyond the one they treated. We also prove equivalences between reflection principles for higher-order arithmetic and quantified determinacy axioms, answering two questions of Pacheco and Yokoyama.

Abstract:We unite two themes in dyadic analysis and number theory by studying an analogue of the failure of the Hasse principle in harmonic analysis. Explicitly, we construct an explicit family of measures on the real line that are $p$-adic and $q$-adic doubling for any distinct primes $p$ and $q$, yet not doubling, and we apply these results to show analogous statements about the reverse Hölder and Muckenhoupt $A_p$ classes of weights. The proofs involve a delicate interplay among several geometric and number theoretic properties.

Abstract:Resource-bounded measure is a generalization of classical Lebesgue measure that is useful in computational complexity. The central parameter of resource-bounded measure is the {\it resource bound} $\Delta$, which is a class of functions. When $\Delta$ is unrestricted, i.e., contains all functions with the specified domains and codomains, resource-bounded measure coincides with classical Lebesgue measure. On the other hand, when $\Delta$ contains functions satisfying some complexity constraint, resource-bounded measure imposes internal measure structure on a corresponding complexity class. Most applications of resource-bounded measure use only the "measure-zero/measure-one fragment" of the theory. For this fragment, $\Delta$ can be taken to be a class of type-one functions (e.g., from strings to rationals). However, in the full theory of resource-bounded measurability and measure, the resource bound $\Delta$ also contains type-two functionals. To date, both the full theory and its zero-one fragment have been developed in terms of a list of example resource bounds chosen for their apparent utility. This paper replaces this list-of-examples approach with a careful investigation of the conditions that suffice for a class $\Delta$ to be a resource bound. Our main theorem says that every class $\Delta$ that has the closure properties of Mehlhorn's basic feasible functionals is a resource bound for measure. We also prove that the type-2 versions of the time and space hierarchies that have been extensively used in resource-bounded measure have these closure properties. In the course of doing this, we prove theorems establishing that these time and space resource bounds are all robust.

Abstract:We identify a notion of reducibility between predicates, called instance reducibility, which commonly appears in reverse constructive mathematics. The notion can be generally used to compare and classify various principles studied in reverse constructive mathematics (formal Church's thesis, Brouwer's Continuity principle and Fan theorem, Excluded middle, Limited principle, Function choice, Markov's principle, etc.). We show that the instance degrees form a frame, i.e., a complete lattice in which finite infima distribute over set-indexed suprema. They turn out to be equivalent to the frame of upper sets of truth values, ordered by the reverse Smyth partial order. We study the overall structure of the lattice: the subobject classifier embeds into the lattice in two different ways, one monotone and the other antimonotone, and the $\lnot\lnot$-dense degrees coincide with those that are reducible to the degree of Excluded middle. We give an explicit formulation of instance degrees in a relative realizability topos, and call these extended Weihrauch degrees, because in Kleene-Vesley realizability the $\lnot\lnot$-dense modest instance degrees correspond precisely to Weihrauch degrees. The extended degrees improve the structure of Weihrauch degrees by equipping them with computable infima and suprema, an implication, the ability to control access to parameters and computation of results, and by generally widening the scope of Weihrauch reducibility.

Abstract:We study Medvedev reducibility in the context of set theory -- specifically, forcing and large cardinal hypotheses. Answering a question of Hamkins and Li \cite{HaLi}, we show that the Medvedev degrees of countable ordinals are far from linearly ordered in multiple ways, our main result here being that there is a club of ordinals which is an antichain with respect to Medvedev reducibility. We then generalize these results to arbitrary ``reasonably-definable" reducibilities, under appropriate set-theoretic hypotheses. We then turn from ordinals to general structures. We show that some of the results above yield characterizations of counterexamples to Vaught's conjecture; another applies to all situations, assigning an ordinal to any reasonable class of structures and ``measure" on that class. We end by discussing some directions for future research.

Abstract:We introduce two notions of effective reducibility for set-theoretical statements, based on computability with Ordinal Turing Machines (OTMs), one of which resembles Turing reducibility while the other is modelled after Weihrauch reducibility. We give sample applications by showing that certain (algebraic) constructions are not effective in the OTM-sense and considerung the effective equivalence of various versions of the axiom of choice.

Then, we investigate how the outputs of the decomposition depend on its inputs, in particular characterising the two elements of the decomposition as projections in the sense of Riesz spaces and of metric spaces.
Big in Reverse Mathematics: measure and category

Abstract:The smooth development of large parts of mathematics hinges on the idea that some sets are `small' or `negligible' and can therefore be ignored for a given purpose. The perhaps most famous smallness notion, namely `measure zero', originated with Lebesgue, while a second smallness notion, namely `meagre' or `first category', originated with Baire around the same time. The associated Baire category theorem is a central result governing the properties of meagre (and related) sets, while the same holds for Tao's pigeonhole principle for measure spaes and measure zero sets. In this paper, we study these theorems in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics, identifying a considerable number of equivalent theorems. The latter involve most basic properties of semi-continuous and pointwise discontinuous functions, Blumberg's theorem, Riemann integration, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. All the aforementioned theorems fall (far) outside of the Big Five of Reverse Mathematics, and we investigate natural restrictions like Baire 1 and quasi-continuity that make these theorems provable again in the Big Five (or similar). Finally, despite the fundamental differences between measure and category, the proofs of our equivalences turn out to be similar.

Abstract:By introducing a ubiquity property for rectangles, we prove the mass transference principle from rectangles to rectangles, i.e., if a sequence of rectangles forms a ubiquity system (a full measure property), then the limsup set defined by shrinking these rectangles to smaller rectangles has full Hausdorff measure or to say transfer a full measure property to a full Hausdorff measure property for brevity. The limsup sets generated by balls or generated by rectangles appear at the most fundamental level in Diophantine approximation: one follows from Dirichlet's theorem, the other follows from Minkowski's theorem. So the result sets up a general principle for the Hausdorff measure theory for high dimensional Diophantine approximation which, together with the landmark work of Beresnevich & Velani in 2006 where a transference principle from balls to balls is established, gives a coherent Hausdorff measure theory for metric Diophantine approximation. The dimensional theory for limsup sets generated by rectangles also underpins the dimensional theory in multiplicative Diophantine approximation where unexpected phenomenon occurs and the usually used methods or even their generalizations fail to work.

Abstract:We introduce three measures of complexity for families of sets. Each of the three measures, that we call dimensions, is defined in terms of the minimal number of convex subfamilies that are needed for covering the given family: for upper dimension, the subfamilies are required to contain a unique maximal set, for dual upper dimension a unique minimal set, and for cylindrical dimension both a unique maximal and a unique minimal set. In addition to considering dimensions of particular families of sets we study the behaviour of dimensions under operators that map families of sets to new families of sets. We identify natural sufficient criteria for such operators to preserve the growth class of the dimensions. We apply the theory of our dimensions for proving new hierarchy results for logics with team semantics. First, we show that the standard logical operators preserve the growth classes of the families arising from the semantics of formulas in such logics. Second, we show that the upper dimension of k+1-ary dependence, inclusion, independence, anonymity, and exclusion atoms is in a strictly higher growth class than that of any k-ary atoms, whence the k+1-ary atoms are not definable in terms of any atoms of smaller arity.

Abstract:Many results related to quantitative problems in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation are asymptotic, such as the number of rational solutions to certain inequalities grows with the same rate almost everywhere modulo an asymptotic error term. The error term incorporates an implicit constant that varies from one point to another. This means that applications of these results does not give concrete bounds when applied to, say a finite sum, or when applied to counting the number of solutions up to a finite point for a given inequality. This paper addresses this problem and makes the tools and their results effective, by making the implicit constant explicit outside of an exceptional subset of Lebesgue measure at most $\delta>0$, an arbitrarily small constant chosen in advance. We deduce from this the fully effective results for Schmidt's Theorem, quantitative Koukoulopoulos-Maynard Theorem and quantitative results on $M_{0}$-sets; we also provide effective results regarding statistics of normal numbers and strong law of large numbers.

Abstract:We describe the basic theory of infinite time Turing machines and some recent developments, including the infinite time degree theory, infinite time complexity theory, and infinite time computable model theory. We focus particularly on the application of infinite time Turing machines to the analysis of the hierarchy of equivalence relations on the reals, in analogy with the theory arising from Borel reducibility. We define a notion of infinite time reducibility, which lifts much of the Borel theory into the class $\bm{\Delta}^1_2$ in a satisfying way.

Abstract:We report on an original formalization of measure and integration theory in the Coq proof assistant. We build the Lebesgue measure following a standard construction that had not yet been formalized in proof assistants based on dependent type theory: by extension of a measure over a semiring of sets. We achieve this formalization by leveraging on existing techniques from the Mathematical Components project. We explain how we extend Mathematical Components' iterated operators and mathematical structures for analysis to provide support for infinite sums and extended real numbers. We introduce new mathematical structures for measure theory and incidentally provide an illustrative, concrete application of Hierarchy-Builder, a generic tool for the formalization of hierarchies of mathematical structures. This formalization of measure theory provides the basis for a new formalization of the Lebesgue integration compatible with the Mathematical Components project.

Analogues of the countable Borel equivalence relations in the setting of computable reducibility

Abstract:Coskey, Hamkins, and Miller [CHM12] proposed two possible analogues of the class of countable Borel equivalence relations in the setting of computable reducibility of equivalence relations on the computably enumerable (c.e.) sets. The first is based on effectivizing the Lusin-Novikov theorem while the latter is based on effectivizing the Feldman-Moore theorem. They asked for an analysis of which degrees under computable reducibility are attained under each of these notions. We investigate these two notions, in particular showing that the latter notion has a strict dichotomy theorem: Every such equivalence relation is either equivalent to the relation of equality ($=^{ce}$) or almost equality ($E_0^{ce}$) between c.e. sets. For the former notion, we show that this is not true, but rather there are both chains and antichains of such equivalence relations on c.e. sets which are between $=^{ce}$ and $E_0^{ce}$. This gives several strong answers to [CHM12, Question 3.5] showing that in general there is no analogue of the Glimm-Efros dichotomy for equivalence relations on the c.e. sets.

Kleene Theorem for Higher-Dimensional Automata

Abstract:We prove a Kleene theorem for higher-dimensional automata. It states that the languages they recognise are precisely the rational subsumption-closed sets of finite interval pomsets. The rational operations on these languages include a gluing composition, for which we equip pomsets with interfaces. For our proof, we introduce higher-dimensional automata with interfaces, which are modelled as presheaves over labelled precube categories, and develop tools and techniques inspired by algebraic topology, such as cylinders and (co)fibrations. Higher-dimensional automata form a general model of non-interleaving concurrency, which subsumes many other approaches. Interval orders are used as models for concurrent and distributed systems where events extend in time. Our tools and techniques may therefore yield templates for Kleene theorems in various models and applications.
