Abstract:To monitor the irradiation dose and position accurately delivered to patient during particle therapy in Heavy-Ion Cancer Therapy Device (HICTD) in Lanzhou, China, an In-Beam Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has been designed as a detection device to obtain time, energy and position information of gamma ray generated from the annihilation event, which is equipped at the beam line of HICTD. Sixteen detection blocks are adopted to construct a Dual-Head Planar-Type detector array in the In-Beam PET, and each detection block is composed of pixel detection elements. Data Acquisition Unit (DAQU) is employed as the processing module to process and digitize signals from detection blocks. Each DAQU faces a pair of detection blocks, there are eight DAQUs in total in this PET at present. A Central Processor Module (CPM) developed for the detector array is presented in this paper. CPM has two crucial functions: first it is as a hub to connect with all DAQUs through the optical links for data transfer and state control, second it is as a data process engine which collects data from different DAQUs and sorts the events into the chronological order for coincidence event discrimination, and then interfaces both control signals and event data to a host server through PCIe interface for image reconstruction. A novel parallel sorting algorithm has been explored and adopted in CPM, which can effectively sort the valid events detected by detection blocks. The key performance of the CPM has been evaluated in experiments. It can handle the events up to 16 million per second at least, which is capable of sorting and discriminating coincidence events efficiently.

Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) system has been proposed and designed by the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. It consists of an accelerator front-end—a highintensity ion source, a 3 MeV radiofrequency quadrupole linac (RFQ), and a 13 MeV drift-tube linac (DTL), a neutron target station, and some experimental stations. In design of our RF power supply, both RFQ and DTL share a single klystron which is capable of 2.5 MW peak RF power and a 3.33% duty factor. The 325MHz klystron contains a modulating anode and has a 100kW average output power. Portions of the RF power system, such as pulsed high voltage power supply, modulator, crowbar protection and RF power transmission are all presented in details in this paper.

Abstract:Heavy-Ion Cancer Therapy Device (HICTD) developed by the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is an advanced tumor radiotherapy device for nuclear medicine. The time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) located on the beam line, called In-Beam TOF-PET, is a key detector in HICTD, which is employed for obtaining time, energy and position information of gamma ray to implement real-time image reconstruction during the treatment. A high performance readout electronics system has been designed for In-Beam TOF-PET. The Data Acquisition Unit (DAQU), a key device of it has been implemented. The signals from the In-Beam TOF-PET are acquired and processed by the DAQU, including 8 energy chains and 2 time chains. A field programmable gate array (FPGA) is adopted as a processor on board for implementing pulse area information extracting algorithm, FPGA-based TDC, and etc. The precision pulsar test indicates that the DAQU system has intrinsic influences on the energy resolution better than 5.5 parts per thousand (full width at the half-maximum, FWHM) and time resolution of 255 ps (FWHM). The Na-22 source test indicates that the overall system of the in-beam TOF-PET has an energy resolution of 14% FWHM at 511 keV and coincidence timing resolution better than 1.12 ns. The good position identification ability is indicated by the flood map, all the 484 crystals in one of LYSO crystal block detectors can be clearly distinguished.

Abstract:Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) system has been developing by the department of engineering physics of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Up to now, conceptual design and engineering design of CPHS have been completed. Accelerator of the CPHS consists of an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) proton source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 3 MeV radiofrequency quadrupole linac (RFQ), a 13 MeV drifttube linac (DTL), and a High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT). In design of our RF power source, both RFQ and DTL share a single klystron which is capable of 3.0 MW peak RF power and a 3.33% duty factor. Portions of the RF power system, such as pulsed high voltage power supply, modulator, crowbar protection and RF transmission are all presented in details in this paper.

Abstract:During the past. decades, large-scale national neutron sources have been developed in Asia, Europe, and North America. Complementing such efforts, compact hadron beam complexes and neutron sources intended to serve primarily universities and industrial institutes have been proposed, and some have recently been established. Responding to the demand in China for pulsed neutron/proton-beam platforms that are dedicated to fundamental and applied research for users in multiple disciplines from materials characterization to hadron therapy and radiography to accelerator-driven sub-critical reactor systems (ADS) for nuclear waste transmutation, we have initiated the construction of a compact, yet expandable, accelerator complex-the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS). It consists of an accelerator front-end (a high-intensity ion source, a 3-MeV radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ), and a 13-MeV drift-tube linac (DTL)), a neutron target station (a beryllium target with solid methane and room-temperature water moderators/reflector), and experimental stations for neutron imaging/radiography, small-angle scattering, and proton irradiation. In the future, the CPHS may also serve as an injector to a ring for proton therapy and radiography or as the front end to an ADS test facility. In this paper, we describe the design of the CPHS technical systems and its intended operation.

Abstract:A compact AMS facility which is special used for further analyzing atmospheric pollution especially in north China via carbon-14 measurement was developed at CIAE (China Institute of Atomic Energy), This machine is a single acceleration stage AMS, running with the highest accelerate voltage of 200kV, The control system is based on distributed Ethernet control system, using standard TCP/IP protocol as main communication protocol. In order to connect to the main control network freely, device-level data-link layers were developed also. A LabVIEW client, developing virtual machine applied environment, provides friendly graphical user interface for the devices management and measurement data processing.

It consists of an accelerator front-end—a high-intensity ion source, a 3 MeV radiofrequency quadrupole linac (RFQ), and a 13 MeV drift-tube linac (DTL), a neutron target station—a beryllium target with solid methane and roomtemperature water moderators/reflector, and tentatively six neutron stations for imaging/radiography, activation analysis, small-angle scattering, reflectometry, beamline optics development, and therapy. Additionally, the proton beam can be switched to serve multiple proton stations for biotechnological, fuel cell, and nano-applications, as well as space irradiation and detection. In the future CPHS may also serve as an injector to a ring for proton therapy and radiography or as the front end to a superconducting RF linac for accelerator driven sub-critical reactor test programs.

Abstract:The control system for compact single stage electrostatic accelerator for PM2. 5analysis of atmospheric pollutant was developed. The distributed control system based on TCP/IP protocol was established, and many kinds of protocols and bus technology were adopted for the data transmission. The software was developed with graphical programming methods for virtual instrument. A series of anti-interference measures were adopted to reduce the interference of high voltage ignition and other factors to the measurement and control system. The control system has the advantages of stable operation and strong anti-interference ability.

Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) project that was launched in September 2009 at Tsinghua University has reached a first commissioning stage in conjunction with ongoing activities to fulfill the eventual design goal of a similar to 10(13) n/s epithermal-to-cold neutron yield for education, instrumentation development, and industrial applications. Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) has launched at Tsinghua University to develop a neutron source based on a 13-MeV, 50-mA proton linac, consisting of an ECR ion source, LEBT, RFQ, and DTL. The primary design of the DTL for the CPHS is presented in this paper, which includes the dynamics calculation, RF field optimization, and error analysis. This DTL accelerates a 50-mA proton beam from 3 MeV to 13 MeV with 1.2 MW of RF power. The DTL directly follows the RFQ with no Medium-Energy Beam-Transport line (MEBT). Transverse focusing is provided by PMQs housed in the drift tubes. The focusing lattice is designed to continue the transverse phase advance of the RFQ to preserve current independence while avoiding mismatches and parametric resonances.

Abstract:The 3 MeV Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) is in its initial stage for the commissioning at Tsinghua University. Braze of the flanges was completed in January, 2012. The RFQ cavity has been delivered to Tsinghua University after the final field tuning. In 2012 the 3-meter-long RFQ is expected to deliver 3 MeV protons to the downstream High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) with the peak current of 50 mA, pulse length of 0.5 ms and beam duty factor of 2.5%. The initial commissioning is now underway.

Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, China has been reported in this paper. CPHS consists of a proton linac, a neutron target station, and a small-angle neutron scattering instrument, a neutron imaging/radiology station, and a proton irradiation station. The proton linac accelerator part is composed of a ECR ion source, LEBT section, a RFQ accelerator, a DTL linac and a HEBT. Up to now, the IS/LEBT and the RFQ have ready. The first phase of the CPHS construction is scheduled to complete 3MeV proton beam on the target in the end of 2012. INTRODUCTION In 2010 June, Tsinghua University, in order to respond the increasing demand in China of accelerator-based neutron and proton experimental platforms for basic researches and technological developments, startup a project of building a Hadron Application and Technology Complex (HATC) which begins with a relatively small and moderate-power facility but later expandable. The initial phase of the HATC is called the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS)[1]. The missions of CPHS are education student & staff training; instrumentation and R&D; neutron instrumentation tests; limited-scale science discovery & applications with neutron imaging & scattering instruments. It will be completed as soon as possible in 3 years. CPHS consists of a proton linac (13 MeV, 16 kW, peak current 50 mA, 0.5 ms pulse width at 50 Hz), a neutron target station, a small-angle neutron scattering instrument, a neutron imaging/radiology station, and a proton irradiation station. The initial phase of the CPHS construction is scheduled to complete in the end of 2012. The accelerator consists of a ECR ion source, LEBT section, a RFQ accelerator, a DTL linac and a HEBT. ECR ion source will give up to 60mA at 50keV proton beam with proton ration large than 85%, and 0.02 πcm mrad normalized rms-emittance. A very short length of LEBT(less than 1.3m) will be used to matching the beam from ion source to the RFQ entrance. A 3 meters long of RFQ accelerate the proton to 3MeV. No MEBT will be requirement in this project. The Drift Tube Linac with permanent magnets focusing lens will accept the proton beam direct from RFQ. Abstract:The Compact Torus Injector (CTI) is a magnetic confinement fusion device feeding system, which injects the excited compact toroidal plasma into the target device at high speed, and controls the fuel injection and injection speed to achieve optimal control of the density pressure profile of the magnetic confinement fusion device. As the important subsystem of the CTI, the CTI High-Voltage Pulse Power Supply (HVPPS) system consists of five sets of power supply. This paper uses EPCIS as a development platform to design the control system of the CTI HVPPS which realizes timing sequential control, status detection, parameter setting and read-back status of the CTI power supplies with different communication interfaces and protocols. The discharge experiments are performed on the CTI. The experimental results prove that the control system meets the real-time control requirements of CTI devices for HVPPS. (Abstract)
Construction status of the CPHS RFQ at Tsinghua University

Abstract:We present, in this paper, the construction status of a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University. The 3-meter-long RFQ will deliver 3 MeV protons to the downstream Drift Tube Linac (DTL) with the peak current of 50 mA, pulse length of 0.5 ms and beam duty factor of 2.5%. The RFQ has been mechanically separated into three sections. A ball-end mill, instead of a forming cutter, is adopted to machine the vane tip due to its varying radius of curvature. The precision of the numerically controlled milling machine has been verified by machining test pieces of aluminum and copper. Fine machining of the vanes was completed in July, 2011. Abstract:The Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source (TTX) has a strict laser-electron synchronization requirement and a comprehensive system structure including dual highpower laser system, RF system and beam diagnostic instruments, etc. Recently, a synchronization and control system is developed to meet these requirements, which includes a laser-RF synchronizer with 100fs time jitter, a FPGA based event generator for laser and RF systems with 250ps time resolution, and an EPICS based control system for system integration and remote monitor and control. The electron bunch arrival time jitter is carefully measured and analyzed with the help of a RF deflecting cavity. This paper reports the development status, technical implementation, and measurement results of the synchronization and control system.

Abstract:We present, in this paper, the design and construction status of a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University. The 3-meter-long RFQ will accelerate protons from 50 keV to 3 MeV at an RF frequency of 325 MHz. In the physics design we have programmed the inter-vane voltage as a function of beam velocity, to optimize the performance of the RFQ, by tailoring the cavity cross section and vane-tip geometry as a function of longitudinal position while limiting the peak surface electric field to 1.8 Kilpatrick. There will be no Medium-Energy-Beam-Transport (MEBT) following the RFQ. We have machined three test sections and the final RFQ accelerator is now under construction. We will describe the status of the RFQ system in this paper.

Abstract:The design progress of the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University is presented in this paper. The RFQ will accelerate protons from 50 keV to 3 MeV, with the RF frequency of 325 MHz. The objective is to obtain the optimum structure of the RFQ accelerator with high transmission rate and tolerable total length. The beam dynamics are studied by the simulation of the proton beam in the RFQ accelerator with the code of PARMTEQM. The output proton beam from the RFQ is well matched into the DTL without Medium-Energy-Beam-Transport (MEBT) between the RFQ and DTL. INTRODUCTION A 325 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator will be built to produce 50mA of proton beam at 3 MeV as an injector of the 13 MeV DTL for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) project at Tsinghua University. The CPHS project is a universitybased proton accelerator platform (13 MeV, 16 kW, peak current 50 mA, 0.5 ms pulse width at 50 Hz) for multidisciplinary neutron and proton applications [1]. The RFQ system consists of three four-vane resonant cavity sections, one power coupler, 47 slug tuners, 8 dipole-mode stabilizer rods, the RF power supply and its low-level control, vacuum, water cooling, resonance control, beam diagnostics, support and alignment systems. Fig. 1 shows the sketch of the RFQ system and the design parameters are listed in Table 1. Figure 1: Sketch of the 3 MeV RFQ for the CPHS project. To save space and cost, no Medium-Energy-BeamTransport (MEBT) will be placed between the RFQ and DTL. The RFQ is carefully designed to match the beam from the high-energy end of the RFQ to the entrance of the DTL, by reducing the focusing in the exit of the RFQ. The cavity cross section and vane-tip geometry are tailored as a function of longitudinal position. The physics design has been completed. One test section made by aluminium has been machined to verify the capability of the numerically controlled milling machine. The final RFQ cavity is now under construction. This paper summarizes the current physics and mechanical design of the CPHS RFQ and presents the fabrication status of the test section. Radiation Detection Technology and Methods

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source is an accelerator-based user facility for neutron, proton, muon applications and so on. The designed proton beam power is 100 kW for the first phase. Overall, the scope of accelerator control system covers four parts, the global systems, the device layer local controls and remote controls, the high-level applications and services and the integration of conventional facilities. The principle guideline is to adopt as many as possible matured technologies and commercial products in the design and implementation. The control system is based on Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System. VME64x bus is chosen for timing system and fast protection system. PLCs and embedded industrial computers are used in the device layer slow controls. Control System Studio is adopted as the high-level applications. Blade server-based virtualization platform is deployed for the computer system. The accelerator control system was completed in September 2017 and then transited to routine operations. The design, implementation and operation of the accelerator control system are described in this paper.

Abstract:We present, in this paper, the operation status of the 3 MeV high current proton Linac for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University. Proton beam with the peak current of 30 mA, pulse length of 100 μs and repetition rate of 50 Hz has been delivered to the Beryllium target to produce the neutron since July 2013. The pulse length will be further increased to 500 μs. The proton beam energy is expected to be enhanced to the designed value of 13 MeV after the Drift Tube Linac is ready in 2015.
