Abstract:The key point to leverage model-based techniques on runtime system management is to ensure the correct synchronization between the running system and its model-based view. In this paper, we present a generative approach, and the supporting tool, to make systematic the development of synchronization engines between running systems and models. We require developers to specify “what kinds of elements to manage” as a MOF meta-model and “how to manipulate those elements using the system's management API” as a so-called access model. From these two specifications, our SM@RT tool automatically generates the synchronization engine to reflect the running system as a MOF-compliant model. We have applied this approach on several practical systems, including the JOnAS JEE server.

Abstract:Runtime software architectures (RSA) are architecture-level, dynamic representations of running software systems, which help monitor and adapt the systems at a high abstraction level. The key issue to support RSA is to maintain the causal connection between the architecture and the system, ensuring that the architecture represents the current system, and the modifications on the architecture cause proper system changes. The main challenge here is the abstraction gap between the architecture and the system. In this paper, we investigate the synchronization mechanism between architecture configurations and system states for maintaining the causal connections. We identify four required properties for such synchronization, and provide a generic solution satisfying these properties. Specifically, we utilize bidirectional transformation to bridge the abstraction gap between architecture and system, and design an algorithm based on it, which addresses issues such as conflicts between architecture and system changes, and exceptions of system manipulations. We provide a generative tool-set that helps developers implement this approach on a wide class of systems. We have successfully applied our approach on JOnAS JEE system to support it with C2-styled runtime software architecture, as well as some other cases between practical systems and typical architecture models.
Inferring Meta-Models for Runtime System Data from the Clients of Management APIs

Abstract:A new trend in runtime system monitoring is to utilize MOF-based techniques in analyzing the runtime system data. Approaches and tools have been proposed to automatically reflect the system data as MOF compliant models, but they all require users to manually build the meta-models that define the types and relations of the system data. To do this, users have to understand the different management APIs provided by different systems, and find out what kinds of data can be obtained from them. In this paper, we present an automated approach to inferring such meta-models by analyzing client code that accesses management APIs. A set of experiments show that the approach is useful for realizing runtime models and applicable to a wide range of systems, and the inferred meta-models are close to the reference ones.

Abstract:Runtime models facilitate the management of running systems in many diﬀerent ways. One of the advantages of runtime models is that they enable the use of existing MDE tools at runtime to implement common auxiliary activities in runtime management, such as querying, visualization, and transformation. In this tool demonstration paper, we focus on this speciﬁc aspect of runtime models. We discuss the requirements of runtime models to enable the use of model-driven tools, and present our tool to help provide such runtime models on the target systems. We apply this tool on a wide range of target systems, modeling the Android mobile system, the Eclipse GUI, the Java class structure, and the JOnAS inner structure. With the help of these runtime models, we perform the runtime management on these systems using classical MDE tools including OCL, QVT, and GMF.

Abstract:Model-based runtime verification is an extension to the state-of-the-art runtime verification, aimed at checking at runtime the system implementation against the system model (consistency checking) and the system model against the system specification (safety checking). Notice that our runtime verification works at the model level, thus, we do not need to strictly synchronize this runtime verification with the system execution. In fact, we mainly use the runtime information (current states) obtained from the system execution to reduce the state space (of the system model) to be explored. It means that this model-based runtime verification might run before or after the system execution, i.e., switch alternately between a preventive pre-checking mode and a maintaining post-checking mode. In order to make it run ahead of the system execution for as long time as possible, we present two possible strategies so that this runtime verification can selectively reduce the state space (of the system model) to be explored by making the system model enriched with probabilities and additional information derived and learned at the system testing phase.

Abstract:When developing smart home systems, developers integrate and compose smart devices and software applications. Because of their diversity and heterogeneity, developers usually encounter many problems. In this paper, we present a runtime model based approach to smart home system development. First, we analyze mobile applications associated with smart devices and then extract some device control APIs. Second, we use SM@RT framework to build the device runtime model. Third, we define the scenario model, that is an abstraction of devices and objects which the system consists of. Fourth, we specify mapping rules from the scenario model to the runtime model and employ a synchronizer, which can interpret the mapping rules, to keep the synchronization between the scenario model and the device runtime model. The mapping handler reads the mapping rules that are defined by developers and does the mapping in terms of them. Abstract:A comprehensive simulation and optimization platform which offers a lot of functions such as decision analysis, production scheduling optimization and process dynamic simulation is urgently required for today's process industry. But this will generate a series of model management problems because models integrated in the platform belong to different classifications and interact with each other in some special applications. In this paper, a model management platform for refinery multi-level simulation and optimization is introduced. Abstract:Promoted by the Service Computing paradigm, service composition has played an important role in modern software development. Currently, available services have covered a wide spectrum of heterogeneity, including SOAP services, Restful services and other data services. The composite services should continuously serve for a large number of users. The heterogeneity and open dynamic network environment bring grand challenges to the management of service composition. Based upon our previous work on service composition middleware - Star link, and a runtime system management tool - SM@RT, this paper proposes a model-based approach to service composition management at run time. A runtime model enables casual connections between applications and supporting platforms, provides a global view of a running system, abstracts underlying technical details, and performs automated generation of management code. By constructing the runtime model of Star link and using the SM@RT tool to generate synchronization between model and running composition, our approach makes the following contributions to service composition management: (1) a more comprehensive view of service composition management, (2) an easy-of-use manner to perform management operations at model level without underlying tedious details, (3) an on-the-fly effect on running system by means of synchronization between the model and composite services. We demonstrate that our approach can tackle the challenge of service composition management by using a case study of a photo sharing composite service application.

Abstract:There exists a consensus that software architecture (SA) plays a central role in software development and also plays an important role in the lifecycle phases after software delivery. Particularly, SA can be used to reduce the great difficulty and cost of software maintenance and evolution. In this paper, runtime software architecture (RSA) based on reflective middleware is proposed to support architecture-based software maintenance and evolution. In this approach, the actual states and behaviors of the runtime system can be observed and manipulated in a consistent and understandable way through its architectural view. Being an accurate, up-to-date, semantic and operable view of SA, RSA looks components and connectors as “white-box” entities to accurately and thoroughly describe the runtime system, extends traditional architecture description languages to formally describe itself and naturally inherit plentiful semantics in traditional views of SA, and utilizes reflective middleware to observe and manipulate the runtime system. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, a reflective J2EE application server, called PKUAS, is implemented to observe and manipulate the components, connectors and constraints in the runtime system. Finally, the performance evaluation proves that making RSA explicit and operable at runtime has little effect on the runtime system.

Abstract:ABSTRACTSystem management becomes increasingly complex and brings high costs, especially with the advent of Cloud Computing. For controlling the management cost, in particular the manual management cost, many computer programs have been developed to take over manual management tasks or reduce their complexity and difficulty. These programs are usually hard-coded by languages like Java and C++, which bring enough capability and flexibility but also cause high programming effort and cost. This paper proposes an architecture based approach to developing the management programs in a simple but powerful enough manner. First of all, the manageability of a given platform is abstracted as a runtime model of the platform's software architecture, which can automatically and immediately propagate any observable runtime changes of the target platforms to the corresponding architecture models, and vice versa. Then the management programs will be developed using modeling languages, instead of those relatively "low-level" programming languages. Such architecture-level management programs bring many advantages related to the performance, interoperability, reusability and simplicity.

Abstract:Although there are many management systems, Cloud management still faces with great challenges, due to the diversity of Cloud resources and ever-changing management requirements. Integration and adaptation become important for constructing a cloud management system, because a redevelopment solution based on existing systems is usually more practicable than developing the management system from scratch. However, the workload of redevelopment is also very high. As the runtime model is causally connected with the corresponding running system automatically, constructing an integrated Cloud management system based on runtime models can benefit from the model-specific natures to reduce the development workload. Therefore, in this paper, we present a runtime model based approach to constructing cloud management system. First, we construct the runtime model of each Cloud resource based on its own management interfaces. Second, we construct a composite model reflecting integration management requirements through merging the distributed runtime models. Third, we make Cloud management meet the adaptation requirements through model transformation from the composite model to the customized models specific to different administrators. Such architecture-level integrated management brings many advantages related to the interoperability, reusability and simplicity. The experiment on a real-world cloud demonstrates the feasibility, effectiveness and benefits of the new approach to integrated management of Cloud resources.

Abstract:Component-based self-optimizing systems can adjust themselves over time to dynamic environments by means of exchanging components. In case that such systems are safety-critical, the dependability issue becomes paramountly significant. This paper presents a novel model-based runtime verification to increase dependability for the self-optimizing systems of this kind. The proposed verification approach plays a role of an alternative acceptance test transparently integrated in RTOS, named model-based acceptance test. The verification is performed at the level of (RT-UML) models representing the systems under consideration. The properties to be checked are expressed by RT-OCL where the underlying temporal logic is restricted to either time-annotated ACTL or LTL formulae. The applied technique is based on the on-the-fly model checking, which runs interleaved with the execution of the checked system in a pipelined manner. More specifically, for ACTL formulae this means an on-the-fly solution to the NHORNSAT problem, while in the case of LTL formulae, the emptiness checking method is applied.

Abstract:The challenges in the area real-time simulation of physical systems have grown rapidly.To prepare a simulation model for execution on a real-time target, an experienced developer usually performs several adaptations on the model and the solver in order to reduce runtime and communication needs.Two-folded tool support for evaluating the effect of such adaptations is presented here: (1) A ModelComparator for the systematic comparison of simulation results from different versions of the model and (2) an RT-Profiler for measurements and analyses of function calls during RT simulations.The ModelComparator facilitates verification of a model adapted for real-time execution to ensure that it will produce sufficiently accurate results at selected operation points.The RT-Profiler takes the specific code structure of simulation models into account when measuring execution times.It directs the developer to those parts that are most promising for model adaptations.We consider OpenModelica and SimulationX as modeling and code generation frameworks for realtime simulation.The procedure of model adaptations and the use of the analysis tools therein are exemplified in small case studies.

Abstract:Due to the diversity of resources and different management requirements, cloud management is faced with great challenges in complexity and difficulty. Third, cloud management is setup to meet specific requirements through model transformation from the composite model to the customized models. Additionally, based on OpenStack and Hyperic, a runtime model based management system is implemented to manage the hardware and software resources of virtual machines with the proposed approach. The results prove that new approach is feasible and effective.
