Abstract:Runtime software architectures (RSA) are architecture-level, dynamic representations of running software systems, which help monitor and adapt the systems at a high abstraction level. The key issue to support RSA is to maintain the causal connection between the architecture and the system, ensuring that the architecture represents the current system, and the modifications on the architecture cause proper system changes. The main challenge here is the abstraction gap between the architecture and the system. In this paper, we investigate the synchronization mechanism between architecture configurations and system states for maintaining the causal connections. We identify four required properties for such synchronization, and provide a generic solution satisfying these properties. Specifically, we utilize bidirectional transformation to bridge the abstraction gap between architecture and system, and design an algorithm based on it, which addresses issues such as conflicts between architecture and system changes, and exceptions of system manipulations. We provide a generative tool-set that helps developers implement this approach on a wide class of systems. We have successfully applied our approach on JOnAS JEE system to support it with C2-styled runtime software architecture, as well as some other cases between practical systems and typical architecture models.

Abstract:As Internet and wireless network make the runtime environment much more dynamic and open, software becomes more and more complex and difficult to maintain. Software architecture at run-time (RSA) can help maintainers understand and reason the run-time system. Moreover, RSA helps to keep SA consistent in the whole software lifecycle. This paper presents an approach to three fundamental issues of RSA, including making RSA the first-class entity at runtime, maintaining the causal-connection between RSA and the runtime system, and mapping RSA from/into SA at the design phase.

Abstract:There exists a consensus that software architecture (SA) plays a central role in software development and also plays an important role in the lifecycle phases after software delivery. Particularly, SA can be used to reduce the great difficulty and cost of software maintenance and evolution. In this paper, runtime software architecture (RSA) based on reflective middleware is proposed to support architecture-based software maintenance and evolution. In this approach, the actual states and behaviors of the runtime system can be observed and manipulated in a consistent and understandable way through its architectural view. Being an accurate, up-to-date, semantic and operable view of SA, RSA looks components and connectors as “white-box” entities to accurately and thoroughly describe the runtime system, extends traditional architecture description languages to formally describe itself and naturally inherit plentiful semantics in traditional views of SA, and utilizes reflective middleware to observe and manipulate the runtime system. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, a reflective J2EE application server, called PKUAS, is implemented to observe and manipulate the components, connectors and constraints in the runtime system. Finally, the performance evaluation proves that making RSA explicit and operable at runtime has little effect on the runtime system.

Abstract:Runtime environment of software are becoming more and more dynamic and changeful, while pervasive computing and Web services further this situation. Software systems are not only becoming larger, more complex, and also more rigid, which make it difficult to evolve software. This paper focuses on online evolution, more exactly, how to make online evolution process convenient and smart, with help of runtime software architecture (RSA). Abstract:An enhanced BPEL supporting system is proposed based on our previous work to facilitate the dynamic adaptation of composite services, which is often desirable and sometimes unavoidable to keep the services facing evolving environment and varying user requirements satisfactory. With this approach the runtime architecture object which describes the architecture of a composite service is utilized to further decouple the composite service from its constituents by redefining the service references under the current architectural context. The dynamic adaptation is implemented by reinterpreting communicating behaviors between the composite service and its constituents, which is naturally resulted from the modification of the runtime architecture object. A simple application is also developed with the supporting system to illustrate the effect of this architecture-based dynamic adaptation mechanism.

Abstract:Recently, more attention is paid to the researches and practices on how to use software architecture in software maintenance and evolution to reduce their complexity and cost. The key in such architecture-based maintenance and evolution is to recover software architecture from existing systems. Almost all studies on architecture recovery focus on analyzing the source code and other documents. Such recovered software architecture can hardly capture runtime states and behaviors of the system. At the same time, current work pays little attention on how to change the system directly via manipulating the recovered software architecture. This paper presents a novel approach to recovering software architecture from component based systems at runtime and changing the runtime systems via manipulating the recovered software architecture. Containing much more details than the designed software architecture, the recovered software architecture can accurately and thoroughly describe the actual states and behaviors of the runtime system. It can be described formally with the extension of traditional architecture description language, which enables the recovered software architecture to absorb the semantics embedded in the designed software architecture. The recovered software architecture can be represented as multiple views so as to help different users to control the complexity from different concerns. Based on the reflective ability of the component framework, the recovered software architecture is up-to-date at any time and changes made on it will immediately lead to the corresponding changes in the runtime system. The approach presented in this paper is demonstrated on PKUAS, a reflective J2EE (Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition) application server, and the performance is also evaluated.

Abstract:Due to the dynamic and ephemeral nature of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) environments, it is necessary that application software in ubicomp environments is situation-aware (SA) and should be adaptable to both usersý situation changes and the requirement changes. Reconfigurable Context-Sensitive Middleware (RCSM) has been developed to provide development and runtime support for SA software in ubicomp environments, but do not provide runtime support for on-demand context acquisition, action scheduling and dynamic reconfiguration of SA software, and development support that maximize the reusability. In this paper, the development and runtime support provided by RCSM have been substantially expanded to greatly simplify the development of situation-aware application software, and to achieve reusability and runtime reconfigurability simultaneously.

Abstract:Model-based runtime verification is an extension to the state-of-the-art runtime verification, aimed at checking at runtime the system implementation against the system model (consistency checking) and the system model against the system specification (safety checking). Notice that our runtime verification works at the model level, thus, we do not need to strictly synchronize this runtime verification with the system execution. In fact, we mainly use the runtime information (current states) obtained from the system execution to reduce the state space (of the system model) to be explored. It means that this model-based runtime verification might run before or after the system execution, i.e., switch alternately between a preventive pre-checking mode and a maintaining post-checking mode. In order to make it run ahead of the system execution for as long time as possible, we present two possible strategies so that this runtime verification can selectively reduce the state space (of the system model) to be explored by making the system model enriched with probabilities and additional information derived and learned at the system testing phase.

Abstract:With the increased dependence on software, there is a pressing need for engineering long-lived software. As architectures have a profound effect on the life-span of the software and the provisioned quality of service, stable architectures are significant assets. Architectural stability tends to reflect the success of the system in supporting continuous changes without phasing-out. The \textit{behavioural} aspect of stability is essential for seamless operation, to continuously keep the provision of quality requirements stable and prevent architecture's drifting and phasing-out. In this paper, we introduce a reference architecture and model for stability. Specifically, we leverage on the self-awareness principles and runtime goals modelling to explicitly support architectural stability. To illustrate the applicability and evaluate the proposed approach, we consider the case of cloud architectures. The experimental results show that our approach increases the efficiency of the architecture in keeping the expected behaviour stable during runtime operation.

In this paper, we present a framework for reasoning about stability during runtime, leveraging on self-awareness principles. Specifically, we employ runtime goals for managing stability goals, online learning for reasoning about stability on the long-run, and stochastic games for managing associated trade-offs. We evaluate the proposed work using the case of cloud architectures for its highly dynamics during runtime. The experimental results have shown the efficiency of self-awareness techniques in realising the expected behaviour stable during runtime operation.

Abstract:This paper gives a new more practical software reliability model based on architectures of software components. This model uses semi-Markov chain and can give the quantitative evaluation about the digital protection's software. It analyzes the relation between the material architecture of software's modules and the reliability of software, then changes the model into a semi-Markov one based on the architecture of software's modules. Besides having the characters of the former model, this one have the ability to emulate the reliability in the situation which is the software having complex architecture or the system having the capability about paratactic calculating. Furthermore, the variable parameter method is used to study the sensitivity in order to find the vital factors of reliability. An example is given to demo the proposed techniques. The calculation results prove that the algorithm is viable. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:Originating in 1980s, distributed simulation has turned out to be a powerful tool in scientific research, military simulation and training, complex product design and more other fields. However, new problems like limited computational capacity and heavy communication overhead exist as simulation modeling and computation develop. This paper concentrates on these problems, reviews related work, and proposes two novel ways to improve traditional RTI (runtime infrastructure) under new application scenarios (High performance cluster and reflective memory network). The proposed methods of combining software improvement and hardware enhancement are demonstrated to be effective and efficient.
Quality-Driven Self-Adaptation: Bridging the Gap between Requirements and Runtime Architecture by Design Decision

Abstract:Running with static requirements and design decisions, a software system cannot always perform optimally in a highly uncertain and rapidly changing environment. Quality-driven self-adaptation, which enables a software system to continually adapt its structure and behavior to improve the overall quality satisfaction, thus becomes a promising capability of software systems. Existing researches on self-adaptive systems, although having proposed effective methods and techniques on requirements-driven self-adaptation and reflective components, do not well address the gap between requirements and runtime architecture. In this paper, we propose a quality-driven self-adaptation approach, which incorporates both requirements- and architecture-level adaptations. At the requirements level, value-based quality tradeoff decisions are made with the aim of maximizing system-level value propositions. At the architecture level, component-based architecture adaptations are conducted. To bridge the gap between requirements and runtime architecture, design decisions capturing alternative design options and their rationales are introduced to help map requirements adaptations and context changes to adaptation operations on the runtime architecture. To validate the effectiveness, we implement the approach based on a reflective component model and conduct an experimental study on it. The results show that the approach leads to better performance compared with traditional software and the overall quality satisfaction is kept maintained. Furthermore, the development effort is affordable but the approach still has shortage in extensibility.

Abstract:The authors present an architecture-based approach to self-adaptive systems, called self-adaptive software architecture (SASA). To guarantee the general applicability, the authors synthesize a set of popular and/or sophisticated methods in architecture based software engineering, including the quality related architecture analysis methods for identifying why and when to change, the quality driven architecture design methods for deciding what to change, the architectural description language with dynamisms for recording the above knowledge, and the runtime software architecture for executing the designed adaptations. The approach is demonstrated on Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
