Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM) and molecular dynamics (MD) method, in this paper, the tensile deformation properties of Cu nanowires (NWs) with different pre-existing defects, including single surface defects, surface bi-defects and single internal defects, are systematically studied. In-depth deformation mechanisms of NWs with pre-existing defects are also explored. It is found that Young's modulus is insensitive to different pre-existing defects, but yield strength shows an obvious decrease. Defects are observed influencing greatly on NWs' tensile deformation mechanisms, and playing a role of dislocation sources. Besides of the traditional deformation process dominated by the nucleation and propagation of partial dislocations, the generations of twins, grain boundaries, fivefold deformation twins, hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure and phase transformation from face-centred cubic (FCC) structure to HCP structure have been triggered by pre-existing defects. It is found that surface defect intends to induce larger influence to yield strength than internal defect. Most importantly, the defect that lies on slip planes exerts larger influence than other defects. As expected, it is also found that the more or longer of the defect, the bigger influence will be induced.
Atomistic Numerical Investigation of Single-crystal Copper Nanowire with Surface Defects

Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM), a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to study the single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects through tension. The tension simulations for nanowire without defect are first carried out under different temperatures, strain rates and time steps and then surface defect effects for nanowire are investigated. The stress-strain curves obtained by the MD simulations of various strain rates show a rate below 1 X 109 s-1 will exert less effect on the yield strength and yield point, and the Young's modulus is independent of strain rate. A time step below 5 fs is recommend for the atomic model during the MD simulation. It is observed that high temperature leads to low Young's modulus, as well as the yield strength. The surface defects on nanowires are systematically studied in considering different defect orientations. It is found that the surface defect serves as a dislocation source, and the yield strength shows 34.20% decrease with 45 surface defect. Both yield strength and yield point are significantly influenced by the surface defects, except the Young's modulus.

Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) migration associated with grain growth and recrystallization encounters lattice defects frequently, while the atomistic mechanisms of GB-defect interactions during these dynamic processes remain largely unclear. Here, we systematically investigate the atomistic mechanism of the interactions between migrating Σ11(113) symmetrical tilt GBs and different lattice defects, including full dislocation, stacking fault and nanotwin in Au, via the integrated in situ nanomechanical testing and molecular dynamics simulations. Experimental evidence demonstrated a conservative defect accommodation mechanism of Σ11(113) GB and a coupled GB-twin evolution, where localized atom displacement dominated the GB-defect interactions. Moreover, the shear-coupled GB migration was unperturbed by the interaction, due to the glissile residual disconnections left on the GB. These findings provide a comprehensive experimental understanding on the atomistic mechanism of GB migration under the influence of different lattice defects, which significantly advances the theoretical development of GB-dominated plasticity under more realistic circumstances.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials exhibit superior physical and mechanical properties, and they hold great promise for enabling the development of novel micro/nano electro-mechanical systems. A fundamental understanding of the mechanical deformation and degradation in nanostructured materials is critical for designing the damage-tolerant nanostructures and devices. The in situ transmission electron microscopy provides a novel approach to uncover the dynamic deformation mechanisms in nanostructured materials, especially at the atomic scale. This review presents an overview of recent progress in the atomic-scale study of mechanical properties, dynamic deformation and degradation in a variety of nanostructured materials. Experimental techniques for in situ nanomechanical testing are reviewed. New insights into the atomic-level mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials are described, including surface-mediated defect processes, size-dependent deformation mechanisms, plastic deformation of nanotwinned and nanocrystalline materials, phase transformation, liquid-like behavior and pseudoelasticity, bending and fatigue, etc. Future research on the in situ nanomechanics is also discussed. Ultimately, the in situ nanomechanics study will enable a complete understanding of the atomic-scale dynamic deformation, thereby providing a mechanistic basis of the rational design and fabrication of durable nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:Nanoscale materials modified by crystal defects exhibit significantly different behaviours upon chemical reactions such as oxidation, catalysis, lithiation and epitaxial growth. However, unveiling the exact defect-controlled reaction dynamics (e.g. oxidation) at atomic scale remains a challenge for applications. Here, using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the dynamics of a general site-selective oxidation behaviour in nanotwinned silver and palladium driven by individual stacking-faults and twin boundaries. The coherent planar defects crossing the surface exhibit the highest oxygen binding energies, leading to preferential nucleation of oxides at these intersections. Planar-fault mediated diffusion of oxygen atoms is shown to catalyse subsequent layer-by-layer inward oxide growth via atomic steps migrating on the oxide-metal interface. These findings provide an atomistic visualization of the complex reaction dynamics controlled by planar defects in metallic nanostructures, which could enable the modification of physiochemical performances in nanomaterials through defect engineering.
Atomistic and Theoretical Insights on Nanoprecipitates-Controlled Strengthening Behavior for Optimum Mechanical Performance in Nanotwinned NiCoCr Alloys

Abstract:Abstract The nano-precipitates and nanotwins enable to improve the mechanical performance of NiCo-based alloys. In this work, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate the strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinned medium-entropy NiCoCr alloys with various distributions and volume fractions of nano-precipitates. MD simulations reveal that mechanical performance for the precipitates located in twin boundaries is better than that located in the twin lamellae. The precipitate-induced strengthening makes the nanotwinned NiCoCr alloys to achieve the maximum flow stress during increasing the precipitate volume fraction. The influences of volume fraction and distribution of the precipitate on winding and cutting mechanisms are analyzed comprehensively. The dislocation winding behavior, hindered twin boundaries deformation, and the adjacent precipitates connection control the precipitate strengthening mechanisms. A dislocation-based theoretical model is developed to forecast the size-dependent flow stress of nanotwinned metals with nano-precipitates, in which the Orowan bypass mechanism and the dislocation pile-up behaviors are involved. The relationship between the microstructural size and the flow stress of nanotwinned metallic materials with nano-precipitates are explored. The predictions for the flow stresses varied with the precipitate volume fraction are agreeable well with the results of MD simulation. The predicted maximum flow stresses and the corresponding critical volume fractions of nano-precipitates are sensitive to the microstructural sizes.

Abstract:Nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution, composed of coarse grains (CG) and nanograins regions, can have high strength and good ductility. Here, numerical simulations, based on the mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity, micromechanical composite model and the Johnson-Cook failure model, investigate effects of distribution characteristics and shape of the CG regions on fracture behavior of bimodal nanostructured metals. Simulations show that both of them directly influence load response, energy dissipation and fracture pattern. This study shows that both CG region bridging and crack deflection are main toughening mechanisms of the bimodal nanostructured metals.

Abstract:Nanomechanics understandings for nanostructures are critical not only for their integrity concerns but also for their utilization. Attention here is focused on two types of low-dimensional materials, graphene and nanocrystals, with characteristic lengths in nanometers or even angstrom scales. In nanocrystals, the dislocation mechanism is suppressed, and their plasticity is dictated by diffusive atomistic flow along the grain boundaries. Nanomechanics models are developed for the plastic flow and fracture in nanocrystals. Simulations based on micro-structural evolution demonstrate the capability in predicting the brittle versus ductile transition of nanocrystal. To put this mechanism into atomistic images, in-situ tests of nano-crystalline gold were performed under HRTEM. We observe atoms flow along certain atomistic planes of the crack faces to facilitate the advance of the crack. This diffusion assisted mode, along with GB cavitations and cleavage, give a complete spectrum of defect evolutions in nanocrystals. Aside from the danger of degrading the nanostructures, defects in graphene may serve to enrich its functions. The functioning of pristine graphene is rather limited for exploration. Doping of graphene, however, can be achieved around their defects, such as vacancies and edges. We study the defect creation and evolution in graphene. A two-step method was devised for atomic doping of graphene: the first step consists of creating holes and vacancies in graphene by the bombardment of Au atoms, while the second step consists of doping atoms of various kinds to the edges of the hole, as well as into the atomic vacancies. These doping atoms serve to functionalize the edges and to create catalysts in the form of single atom arrays. The mechanics of graphene is explored by monitoring the atom-resolved tearing in graphenes, and by elucidating the tailoring mechanisms of graphene nano-ribbon. We are able to create a two- dimensional iron film, termed ironene, with the constraining support from the graphene edges. The segregation of metallic clusters on a graphene sheet is also explored.

Abstract:Self-assembly of supported 2D or 3D nanocrystals (NCs) by vacuum deposition and of 3D NCs by solution-phase synthesis (with possible subsequent transfer to a support) produces intrinsically nonequilibrium systems. Individual NCs can have far-from-equilibrium shapes and composition profiles. The free energy of NC ensembles is lowered by coarsening which can involve Ostwald ripening or Smoluchowski ripening (NC diffusion and coalescence). Preservation of individual NC structure and inhibition of coarsening are key, e.g., for avoiding catalyst degradation. This review focuses on postsynthesis evolution of metallic NCs. Atomistic-level modeling typically utilizes stochastic lattice-gas models to access appropriate time and length scales. However, predictive modeling requires incorporation of realistic rates for relaxation mechanisms, e.g., periphery diffusion and intermixing, in numerous local environments (rather than the use of generic prescriptions). Alternative coarse-grained modeling must also incorporate appropriate mechanisms and kinetics. At the level of individual NCs, we present analyses of reshaping, including sintering and pinch-off, and of compositional evolution in a vacuum environment. We also discuss modeling of coarsening including diffusion and decay of individual NCs and unconventional coarsening processes. We describe high-level modeling integrated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies for supported 2D epitaxial nanoclusters and developments in modeling for 3D NCs motivated by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies.

Abstract:Recent progresses in atomistic simulations of plastic deformation in nano-scale metallic crystals are presented. Attention is devoted to adjusting the interatomic potential parameters with the objective of gaining fundamental insight into the crystal defect processes in fcc metals. An initial defect is utilized in the molecular statics model to trigger plasticity in a controlled manner. A parametric study is performed by varying the atomic interaction range used in the copper model, such that dislocation slip behavior and/or phase transformation can first be observed without the influence of an unstable surface state of the specimen. We focus on tensile loading along a low-symmetry orientation where single slip prevails upon yielding. When the interaction distance is small, dislocation slip is seen to be the dominant deformation mechanism. A slight increase in the interaction range results in phase transition from the fcc structure to a bcc structure. Re-orientation of the bcc lattice also occurs at later stages of the deformation via a twinning operation. The phase transition mechanism is further enhanced if the nanowire is attached to a flat substrate parallel to the initial close-packed plane. When the atomic interaction range is increased further, the effect of surface stress becomes increasingly important. Plastic yielding occurs in the form of partial slip which creates a stacking fault in the slip plane. The initial point defect plays a less significant role and phase transition during deformation is suppressed. Detailed mechanisms of these atomistic features, as well as their implications to computational simulations of plastic deformation in metallic nanostructures, will be discussed.

Atomistic modeling size dependence of nano-voided copper yielding under uniaxial tension

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on cylindrical voided copper behaviors under uniaxial tension are performed, to study the size dependence of stress-strain response curve and dislocation emission from void free surface. The Embedded Atom Method (EAM) potentials developed by Foils et al. and Mishin are adopted. Atomistic calculation shows the larger matrix has the lower yield stress and the critical stress for dislocation emission decreases with increasing the void size. By employing common neighbor analysis method, it is found phase transformation inducing at the yielding point from the void free surface. This size dependence is expected to provide some helpful insights on understanding the damage mechanism at nano scale.

Abstract:Atomistic modeling has been applied in studying and simulating the advanced junction technologies. We present in this paper the application of molecular dynamics method in simulation of amorphization ion implantation and that of kinetic Monte Carlo method in simulation of annealing. Roughness at amorphous/crystal (a/c) interface is interpreted as transition field and related to the steepness of defects profile. The dissipation of Si extended defects are simulated for both 40kev and 5kev Si implantation. Evolution of extended defects for low energy implantation is well simulated. The simulation indicates that at the initial stage of annealing, the density of extended defects should be larger than that predicted by +1 model.

Abstract:Fracture of materials and structures is a classic problem in the discipline of solid mechanics. Traditional continuum mechanics has successfully solved many important problems and contributed much to engineering, while some problems still remain, such as microscopic fracture process, which requires us to go deep into the atomistic scale, nanomechanics. In this paper, our Work of atomistic computer simulation of fracture process at, nanoscale has been presented, as well as some selective work of others has been reviewed. To facilitate the numerical simulation at nanoscale, a new units system has been developed, including length, time, mass, and other derived physical qualities. Molecular dynamics simulations have been conducted to investigate the I-type brittle crack propagation and fracture process of single crystalline silver using two-dimensional triangular lattice model. The velocity Verlet algorithm is implemented to integrate the equations of motion. The Sutton-Chen potential is used to represent atomic interactions in our simulation. The behaviors of bifurcation and post-bifurcation have been demonstrated by atomic images. These characteristics. have been experimentally observed, however continuum fracture theories can not provide reasonable explanation to them. The traditional fracture mechanics predicts that the crack surface is mirror-like smooth, while a roughening transition is found in our atomistic simulation. Deeper insights into the fracture process can be obtained with multi-scale model to couple different energy, length and. time scales. The most important of all is that the couple model must be seamless. This problem has not been completely solved yet. Some promising models and methodologies have been presented. One is quasi-continuum method. The basic idea is that one can consider an inhomogeneously deformed body as a continuum, for which the kinematics can be described entirely in terms of displacement field, while atomistic analysis is employed to determine the total energy of the body. Another method of seamless coupling of quantum to statistical to continuum mechanics is using handshaking region between two different length scales. This method combines tight-binding (TB), molecular dynamics (MD) and finite element (FE) techniques. Its unifying theme is that a Hamiltonian is defined throughout the entire system. The third method is coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD), where the FE/MD coupling is based on a derivation of the physical. scaling properties of the system.

Abstract:Atomic-level modeling of materials provides fundamental insights into phase stability, structure and properties of crystalline defects, and to physical mechanisms of many processes ranging from atomic diffusion to interface migration. This knowledge often serves as a guide for the development of mesoscopic and macroscopic continuum models, with input parameters provided by atomistic models. This paper gives an overview of the most recent developments in the area of atomistic modeling with emphasis on interfaces and their impact on microstructure and properties of materials. Modern computer simulation methodologies are discussed and illustrated by several applications related to thermodynamic, kinetic and mechanical properties of materials. Existing challenges and future research directions in this field are outlined.

Abstract:In this paper we present an overview of the Telescope designed for ESA's mission dedicated to map the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies and Polarization. Two instruments, LFI and HFI, operate in an overall frequency range between 25 and 900 GHz and share the focal region of the 1.5 meter optimized telescope. The optimization techniques adopted for the optical design and the telescope characteristic are reported and discussed.

Abstract:SummaryAtomistic models, which are crucial for performing molecular dynamics simulations of carbon nanostructures, consist of virtual hexagonal meshes with defects properly distributed in the intersectional areas. Currently, atomistic models are created mostly by hand, which is a notably tedious and time‐consuming process. In this paper, we develop a method that produces atomistic models automatically. Because a hexagonal mesh and triangulation represent dual graphs, our work focuses on the creation of proper triangulation. The edge lengths of the triangulation should be compatible with the lengths of the C–C bonds, and vertices with valences other than 6 (due to the defects in the hexagonal mesh) should be properly arranged around the boundaries of the different components of a carbon nanostructure. Two techniques play important roles in our method: (1) sphere packing is used to place the nodes for triangulation that produces nearly constant edge lengths of the triangles and (2) the movement and editing of defects is used to control the number and positions of the defects. We subsequently develop a computer program based on this method that can create models much easier and faster than the current handwork method, thereby reducing the operation time significantly.
