Abstract: The space of smooth sections of a symplectic fiber bundle carries a natural symplectic structure. We provide a general framework to determine the momentum map for the action of the group of bundle automorphism on this space. Since, in general, this action does not admit a classical momentum map, we introduce the more general class of group-valued momentum maps which is inspired by the Poisson Lie setting. In this approach, the group-valued momentum map assigns to every section of the symplectic fiber bundle a principal circle-bundle with connection. The power of this general framework is illustrated in many examples: we construct generalized Clebsch variables for fluids with integral helicity; the anti-canonical bundle turns out to be the momentum map for the action of the group of symplectomorphisms on the space of compatible complex structures; the Teichm\"uller moduli space is realized as a symplectic orbit reduced space associated to a coadjoint orbit of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and spaces related to the other coadjoint orbits are identified and studied. Moreover, we show that the momentum map for the group of bundle automorphisms on the space of connections over a Riemann surface encodes, besides the curvature, also topological information of the bundle.

Abstract:The presence of symmetries in a Hamiltonian system usually implies the existence of conservation laws that are represented mathematically in terms of the dynamical preservation of the level sets of a momentum mapping. The symplectic or Marsden-Weinstein reduction procedure takes advantage of this and associates to the original system a new Hamiltonian system with fewer degrees of freedom. However, in a large number of situations, this standard approach does not work or is not efficient enough, in the sense that it does not use all the information encoded in the symmetry of the system. In this work, a new momentum map will be defined that is capable of overcoming most of the problems encountered in the traditional approach.

Abstract:We derive stochastic differential equations whose solutions follow the flow of a stochastic nonlinear Lie algebra operation on a configuration manifold. For this purpose, we develop a stochastic Clebsch action principle, in which the noise couples to the phase space variables through a momentum map. This special coupling simplifies the structure of the resulting stochastic Hamilton equations for the momentum map. In particular, these stochastic Hamilton equations collectivize for Hamiltonians that depend only on the momentum map variable. The Stratonovich equations are derived from the Clebsch variational principle and then converted into Itô form. In comparing the Stratonovich and Itô forms of the stochastic dynamical equations governing the components of the momentum map, we find that the Itô contraction term turns out to be a double Poisson bracket. Finally, we present the stochastic Hamiltonian formulation of the collectivized momentum map dynamics and derive the corresponding Kolmogorov forward and backward equations.

Abstract:We give a detailed proof of the well-known classical fact that every symplectic circle action on a compact manifold admits a circle-valued momentum map relative to some symplectic form. This momentum map is Morse-Bott-Novikov and each connected component of the fixed point set has even index. These proofs do not seem to have appeared elsewhere.

Abstract:In a Hamiltonian Lie algebroid over a pre-symplectic manifold and over a Poisson manifold, we introduce a map corresponding to a comomentum map, called a comomentum section. We show that the comomentum section gives a Lie algebroid morphism among Lie algebroids. Moreover, we prove that a momentum section on a Hamiltonian Lie algebroid is a Poisson map between proper Poisson manifolds, which is a generalization that a momentum map is a Poisson map between the symplectic manifold to dual of the Lie algebra. Finally, a momentum section is reinterpreted as a Dirac morphism on Dirac structures.

Abstract:These notes treat a momentum map associated to the Heisenberg group. We classify the coadjoint orbits of the Heisenberg group and show that the cocycle associated to the momentum map becomes a value of the modulus of a coadjoint orbit. We give a representation theoretic description of this modulus.

Abstract:This paper presents a set-up for momentum map reduction of nonholonomic systems with symmetries, extending previous constructions in [3,25], based on the existence of certain conserved quantities and making essential use of the nonholonomic momentum bundle map of [10]. We show that the reductions of the momentum level sets carry an almost symplectic form codifying the reduced dynamics. These reduced manifolds are the leaves of the foliation associated with an almost Poisson bracket obtained by a (dynamically compatible) gauge transformation of the nonholonomic bracket. We show that each leaf is a "Chaplygin-type leaf", in the sense that it is isomorphic to a cotangent bundle with the canonical symplectic form plus a "magnetic term".

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is finding the essential attributes underlying the convexity theorems for momentum maps. It is shown that they are of a topological nature; more specifically, we show that convexity follows if the map is open onto its image and has the so-called local convexity data property. These conditions are satisfied in all the classical convexity theorems and hence they can, in principle, be obtained as corollaries of a more general theorem that has only these two hypotheses. We also prove a generalization of the so-called Local-to-Global Principle that only requires the map to be closed and to have a normal topological space as domain, instead of using a properness condition. This allows us to generalize the Flaschka-Ratiu convexity theorem to noncompact manifolds.

Abstract:This paper discusses the mathematical framework for designing methods of Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Matching (LDM) for image registration in computational anatomy. After reviewing the geometrical framework of LDM image registration methods, we prove a theorem showing that these methods may be designed by using the actions of diffeomorphisms on the image data structure to define their associated momentum representations as (cotangent-lift) momentum maps. To illustrate its use, the momentum map theorem is shown to recover the known algorithms for matching landmarks, scalar images, and vector fields. After briefly discussing the use of this approach for diffusion tensor (DT) images, we explain how to use momentum maps in the design of registration algorithms for more general data structures. For example, we extend our methods to determine the corresponding momentum map for registration using semidirect product groups, for the purpose of matching images at two different length scales. Finally, we discuss the use of momentum maps in the design of image registration algorithms when the image data is defined on manifolds instead of vector spaces.

Abstract:We develop the theory of momentum map for the Maxwell-Lorentz equations with spinning extended charged particle. This theory is indispensable for the study of long-time behaviour and radiation of the solitons of this system. The development relies on the Hamilton-Poisson structure of the system. As an example, we apply the theory to the rotation group of symmetry, calculating the expression for the conserved angular momentum. We check the coincidence of this expression with known classical invariant.

Abstract:This manuscript is essentially a collection of lecture notes which were given by the first author at the Summer School Wisl-2019, Poland and written down by the second author. As the title suggests, the material covered here includes the Poisson and symplectic structures (Poisson manifolds, Poisson bi-vectors and Poisson brackets), group actions and orbits (infinitesimal action, stabilizers and adjoint representations), moment maps, Poisson and Hamiltonian actions. Finally, the phase space reduction is also discussed. The very last section introduces the Poisson-Lie structures along with some related notions. This text represents a brief review of a well-known material citing standard references for more details. The exposition is concise, but pedagogical. The Authors believe that it will be useful as an introductory exposition for students interested in this specific topic.

Norm-squared of the momentum map in infinite dimensions with applications to Kähler geometry and symplectic connections

Abstract:We initiate the study of the norm-squared of the momentum map as a rigorous tool in infinite dimensions. In particular, we calculate the Hessian at a critical point, show that it is positive semi-definite along the complexified orbit, and determine a decomposition of the stabilizer under the complexified action. We apply these results to the action of the group of symplectomorphisms on the spaces of compatible almost complex structures and of symplectic connections. In the former case, we extend results of Calabi to not necessarily integrable almost complex structures that are extremal in a relative sense. In both cases, the momentum map is not equivariant, which gives rise to new phenomena and opens up new avenues for interesting applications. For example, using the prequantization construction, we obtain new central extensions of the group of symplectomorphisms that are encoding geometric information of the underlying finite-dimensional manifold.

Abstract:We prove a normal form theorem for principal Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds around the zero locus of the moment map. The local model is the generalization to Poisson geometry of the classical minimal coupling construction from symplectic geometry of Sternberg and Weinstein. Further, we show that the result implies that the quotient Poisson manifold is linearizable, and we show how to extend the normal form to other values of the moment map.

Abstract:We present a quick review of several reduction techniques for symplectic and Poisson manifolds using local and global symmetries compatible with these structures. Reduction based on the standard momentum map (symplectic or Marsden–Weinstein reduction) and on generalized distributions (the optimal momentum map and optimal reduction) is emphasized. Reduction of Poisson brackets is also discussed and it is shown how it defines induced Poisson structures on cosymplectic and coisotropic submanifolds.

Abstract:The momentum space associated with "tachyonic particles" proves to be rather intricate, departing very much from the ordinary dual to Minkowski space directly parametrized by space-time translations of the Poincaré group. In fact, although described by the constants of motion (Noether invariants) associated with space-time translations, they depend non-trivially on the parameters of the rotation subgroup. However, once the momentum space is parametrized by the Noether invariants, it behaves exactly as that of ordinary particles. On the other hand, the evolution parameter is no longer the one associated with time translation, whose Noether invariant, $P_o$, is now a basic one. Evolution takes place in a spatial direction. These facts not only make difficult the computation of the corresponding representation, but also force us to a sound revision of several traditional ingredients related to Cauchy hypersurface, scalar product and, of course, causality. After that, the theory becomes consistent and could shed new light on some special physical situations like inflation or traveling inside a black hole.
