Abstract:Low-velocity impact responses and impact-induced damages evaluation problems are investigated for the stiffened composite laminated plates based on the progressive failure model and layerwise/solid-elements method (LW/SE). The LW/SE method, which was developed in our previous works (Li, Qing, et al., 2013; Li, Liu, et al., 2013) [1], [2] for the composite laminated stiffened shells and sandwich plates, not only can obtain accurate displacements and stresses for composite laminates but also can consider complex stiffeners without any assumptions. In the present analysis method, impact responses are determined by the finite element code of LW/SE and the nonlinear Hertz’s contact law which enables consideration of local indentation produced by the indentor on the impacted surface. The 3D Hashin criteria in quadratic strain is employed to predict the initiation of the impact-induced damages. The effect of the accumulation of the damages on the stiffness of laminated plate and stiffeners is computed by using continuum damage mechanics. Several numerical examples are carried out to demonstrate the excellent predictive capability of current method and to study the influence of parameters on the impact responses and impact-induced damages. In addition, the present analysis method is used to study the multi-impacts problem of the stiffened composite laminated plate.

Abstract:Aerospace composite structures are subjected to not only single but also repeated low-velocity impact during service conditions. In this paper, the dynamic mechanical response and damage mechanism characterization of composite laminates under single and repeated low-velocity impact are investigated numerically by considering the thickness effect. A progressive damage finite element model is developed in ABAQUS with the help of a user-defined material subroutine. The Hou failure criteria are applied to simulate the intra-layer damage, while the cohesive zone model is adopted to describe the inter-layer damage. The validated model is used to study the effect of thickness. The composite plates with three kinds of thickness are analyzed and discussed in terms of contact force, central displacement, energy absorption and internal damage in detail. The numerical results indicate that for both single and repeated impact, the impact response parameters vary linearly with thickness for the chosen plates. Moreover, the damage patterns are inconsistent with each other in that the dominant damage mode changes from intra-laminar damage to inter-laminar damage as the thickness increases owing to the better load-bearing capacity of the thicker layer.

Abstract:Numerous studies have demonstrated that under low-velocity, low-energy impact conditions, although the surface damage to fiber-reinforced composite laminates may be minimal, significant internal damage can occur. Consequently, a progressive damage finite element model was specifically developed for thermoplastic carbon fiber-reinforced composite laminates subjected to low-speed impact loads, with the objective of analyzing the damage behavior of laminates under impacts of varying energy levels. The model utilizes a three-dimensional Hashin criterion for predicting intralayer damage initiation, with cohesive elements based on bilinear traction-separation law for predicting interlaminar delamination initiation, and incorporates a damage constitutive model based on equivalent displacement to characterize fiber damage evolution, along with the B-K criterion for interlaminar damage evolution. The impact response of laminates at energy levels of 5 J, 10 J, 15 J, 20 J, and 25 J was analyzed through numerical simulation, drop-hammer experiments, and XCT non-destructive testing. The results indicated that the simulation outcomes closely correspond with the experimental findings, with both the predicted peak error and absorbed energy error maintained within a 5% margin, and the trends of the mechanical response curves aligning closely with the experimental data. The damage patterns predicted by the numerical simulations were consistent with the results obtained from XCT scans. The study additionally revealed that the impact damage of the laminates primarily stems from interlaminar delamination and intralayer tensile failure. Initial damage typically presents as internal delamination; hence, enhancing interlaminar bonding performance can significantly augment the overall load-bearing capacity of the laminate.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of different failure criteria including Puck, Hashin and Chang–Chang criteria on the dynamic progressive failure properties of carbon fiber composite laminates. First, a unified theoretical framework on the intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination of composites based on the variational form of the initial value problem with an interface discontinuity is presented. Second, a parametric modeling plug-in for impact analysis of laminates is established using ABAQUS–PYTHON scripting language. Third, the intralaminar damage models using three failure criteria are implemented by the explicit finite element subroutine ABAQUS–VUMAT and the delamination is simulated by the bilinear cohesive model in ABAQUS. Finally, numerical analysis is performed on carbon fiber composite specimens with different materials, layups and impact energies to study the impact force–time/displacement curves and the dissipated energy as well as the damage evolution behaviors of the matrix and delamination interface. Results show that the impact responses and energy dissipation using three criteria are basically consistent except some difference in damage features for matrix cracking and delamination. This research provides a fundamental support for appropriate selection and use of different failure criteria in order to achieve high-efficiency and high-fidelity simulation in the impact analysis.

Abstract:The transient wave propagation in the stiffened laminated composite plates subjected to impact loads is studied.The rib-stiffened laminated plates are modeled as the coupling continuous system in which the flexural motion for the laminated plate is considered,and the flexure and torsion are taken into account for the laminated stiffeners which are modeled as the beams.Through the Laplace transform,on the basis of the first order shear deformation laminated plate theory,each ray group propagating in the stiffened laminated composite plates can be obtained by the reverberation ray matrix method(MRRM).The early short time transient responses of the rib-stiffened laminated plates under various impact loads are calculated by the FFT algorithm.Furthermore,the influences of different impulse signals on the early short time transient responses of the stiffened laminated composite plates are also analyzed.

Abstract:Composites are very sensitive to the load in the direction of thickness, especially out-plane low velocity impact (LVI). In this article, the detailed failure mechanisms of composite laminates with four material systems (CCF300/Epoxy, CCF300/Bismaleimide, CCF800/Epoxy, and CCF800/Bismaleimide) under the loading of LVI and compression after impact (CAI) were studied by experiment and finite element analysis. In finite element model, a newly proposed multi-scale failure criterion (MMF3) and cohesive elements are used to determine the intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination, respectively. Through experiment and finite element analysis, it can be concluded that the damage tolerance performance of epoxy resin composites are better than that of bismaleimide resin composites, and the damage tolerance performance of CCF300 carbon fiber composites are better than that of CCF800 carbon fiber composites. The proposed multi-scale failure analysis method can effectively simulate the impact and CAI damage process of composite laminates.

Abstract:This paper investigates the low-velocity impact response of a shear deformable laminated plate which contains both carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) layers and fiber reinforced composite (FRC) layers. The effect of matrix cracks is considered and a refined self-consistent model (SCM) is selected to describe the degraded stiffness of the plate. The material properties of both FRC layers and CNTRC layers are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The plate rests on a visco-Pasternak foundation in thermal environments. A modified Hertz model is utilized to describe the contact force between the impactor and the plate. Based on a higher order shear deformation theory and von Kármán nonlinear strain-displacement relationships, the motion equations of the plate are established and solved by means of a two-step perturbation approach. The effects of the crack density, CNT volume fraction, temperature variation and the foundation stiffness on the nonlinear low-velocity impact response of hybrid laminated plates with multiple matrix cracks are discussed in detail.

First, the low velocity impact process and the impact damage are simulated. Then, the state of damage is taken as the input for analysing the residual compressive strength. In order to validate these analytical studies, three kinds of multi-layer composite laminates mixed-formed by uni-directional layer HS160SF and woven layer HS220DF are tested good agreements between simulative and experimental results are obtained.

Abstract:A numerical model for simulating the process of low-velocity impact damage in composite laminates using the finite element method is presented in this paper, i.e. Part I of this two part series on the study of impact. In this model, the 9-node Lagrangian element of the Mindlin plate with consideration of large deformation analysis is employed. To analyze the transient response of the laminated plates, a modified Newmark time integration algorithm previously proposed by the authors is adopted here. We also proved that the impact process between a rigid ball and laminated plates is a stiff system, therefore a kind of A(α) stable method has been advocated here to solve the motion equation of the rigid ball. Furthermore, various types of damages including delamination, matrix cracking and fiber breakage, etc. and their mutual influences are modeled and investigated in detail. To overcome the difficulty of numerical oscillation or instability in the analysis of the dynamic contact problem between delaminated layers using the traditional penalty methods, we have employed dynamic spring constraints to simulate the contact effect, which are added to the numerical model by a kind of continuous penalty function. Moreover, an effective technique to calculate the strain energy release rate based on the Mindlin plate model is proposed, which can attain high precision. Finally, some techniques of adaptive analyses have been realized for improving the computational efficiency. Based on this model, a program has been developed for numerically simulating the damage process of cross-ply fiber-reinforced carbon/epoxy composite laminates under low-velocity impact load. In Part II, this numerical model will be verified by comparing with the experimental results. Also the impact damage will be investigated in detail using this numerical approach.

Abstract:Based on the effective failure criterion and the stiffness degradation model for composite material, the ultimate strength of stiffened laminated plates is studied. The analysis model is established by nonlinear degenerated laminate three-dimension shell element method, which is derived from the incrementally updated Lagrangian formulation. In order to obtain the accurate ultimate strength of the plate, a new criterion for judging the singularity of the solution matrix is presented. The effects of stacking sequences and thickness of lamina on the compressive ultimate strength of the plate are discussed. Comparisons between analytical solutions and test results indicate that the nonlinear degenerated laminate three-dimension shell element model is an effective way to analyze the axial compressive ultimate strength of composite laminate stiffened plates. The judgment criterion proposed in this paper improves the validity of analytical results.

Abstract:Impact resistance and damage tolerance are of great significance in the design of composite structures. This study researched the damage and failure mechanism of carbon fiber reinforced poly‐ether‐ether‐ketone (CF/PEEK) composite laminates under the low‐velocity impact (LVI) and compression after impact (CAI) loading conditions. The test included four impact energy levels (15, 30, 45, and 60 J) and compared the effect of two different stacking sequences ([0°/90°]8S and [0°/45°/90°/−45°]4S) on performance. The results shown that the peak impact force of the two different stacking sequences increased from 7.8 kN/8.3 kN–11.4 kN/13.7 kN, and the CAI strength decreased from 370.5 MPa/419.3 MPa to 212.8 MPa/232.5 MPa, respectively. Nondestructive testing of low‐velocity impact specimens by ultrasonic C‐Scan was employed to investigate structural damage. Digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to perform full‐field displacement measurements for the CAI experiment. The cross‐section of typical specimen was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the failure mode of the specimen. In addition, a 3D damage model based on continuum damage mechanics was established, with the consideration of the interlaminar delamination damage and intralaminar damage. Compared with the experimental results, the errors of the numerical simulation of the peak impact force, impact energy absorption, and CAI strength are 3.8%–14.8%, 3.7%–6.9%, and 2.2%–6.7%, respectively, which verifies the validity and rationality of the model. Furthermore, the numerical model and interpolation function were used to predict the ultimate residual strength.

Abstract:Various failures of laminates under low-velocity impacts without penetration are simulated systematically with a limited number of inputs, all measurable following existing standards without any data calibration. No iteration is required to determine any of the failures investigated in this work. Any two adjacent lamina (primary) layers are inserted with a matrix (secondary) layer, whose stresses are modified through two modification coefficients (MCs). The MCs are determined through peak loads of double cantilever beam and end-notched flexure tests on unidirectional laminates, and their weak sensitivity to sample dimensions is shown. Delamination is reproduced by deleting failed secondary-layer elements. The homogenized stresses of fiber and matrix obtained by Bridging Model are converted into true values through the author's true stress theory to estimate constituent-induced intralaminar failures, such as fiber breakage, matrix crack and interface debonding, against the monolithic fiber or matrix strengths measured independently. Primary- layer elements attaining a fatal failure (fiber breakage or matrix crack accompanied with a critical strain condition) are deleted before an impact termination corresponding to separation of the impactor from target. The predicted delamination areas and impact force, displacement and energy histories for the laminates of three lamination angles under different impact energies agree well with our measured counterparts, validating the efficiency of the simulation.

Abstract:The dynamic response of isotropic and laminated composite plate and shell structures under low velocity impact have been investigated using nine-node degenerated shell elements with assumed shear and membrane strain fields to model the target. The effects of large displacement and change in thickness have been included during the formulation process of the shell element. The incremental form of governing equations is formulated based on the Updated Lagrangian approach where the effects of geometric nonlinearities as well as permanent deformation of target are accounted for. Both the Hertzian contact law and experimental indentation law are incorporated into the finite element program to establish the contact force history. Numerical examples on isotropic and composite laminated plate and shell structures under low velocity impact are presented.

Abstract:Composites are widely used in aircraft structures that have free edges and are vulnerable to impact events during manufacturing and maintenance. On-edge impact may have a great contribution in terms of the compression strength loss of composites, but the influence remains unclear. This paper presents experiments and simulations of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials with on-edge impact and compression after edge impact (CAEI). On-edge impact damage was introduced to the composite laminates through the drop weight method with 4, 6, 8 and 10 J impact energies, respectively. A special guide-rail-type fixture was used in the compression tests in which strain–force and load–displacement relationships were obtained. A continuous-step finite element model was proposed to simulate impact and compression. Continuum shell elements and Hashin failure criteria were used to simulate in-ply damage, and interlaminar damage was modelled by cohesive elements. The model was validated by correlating the experimental and numerical results. The investigation results revealed the relationships of the damage size and residual strength with the different impact energies. The crack length and delaminated area grow with the increase in impact energy. The residual compressive strength follows a downward trend with increasing impact energy.

Abstract:L-shaped stiffened composite panels inevitably produce delamination defects during manufacturing and service, which seriously affect the load-bearing performance of the structure. In the present work, a combination of experimental and numerical simulations was used to investigate the effect of initial delamination defects with three different shapes (lossless, elliptical, and circular) in the skin on the axial compression properties of carbon fiber L-shaped stiffened composite panels. Furthermore, to predict the damage initiation and evolution process of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) L-stiffened plates under compression loading, a progressive damage model (PDM) that combines the Hashin failure criterion and the cohesive zone model (CZM) is proposed. Also, a user-defined field variable (USDFLD) subroutine based on the Hashin failure criteria is developed in Abaqus software to study the initiation and progression of intra-laminar damages L-stiffened panels. Damage initiation and evolution process of skin delamination defects are predicted based on CZM. Finally, the finite element simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental measurements, which confirms the reliability of the finite element models (FEMs).
DELAMINATED COMPOSITE LAMINATES' RESPONSE UNDER LOW-VELOCITY IMPACT

Abstract:The transient response of delaminated composite laminate under lowvelocity is discussed in the present paper. At first, the Mindlin plate finite element is used to describe the movement and deformation of composite laminates with a circular delamination, in which large deformation is considered. Secondly, an improved Hertzian indentation law is used to calculate the contact force between the laminates and the rigid ball. To deal with the contact problem between delamination, we use an improved Lagrange multiplier method which was posed previously by the author. To explore delamination growth mechanism, we present a numerical method based on the Mindlin plate model to calculate the strain energy release rate at the front of a delamination. Finally, the influence of initial impact velocity, delamination area and delamination location is discussed. And the results of numerical examples provide a great deal of information for people to understand the delamination growth mechanism and its influence on the impact response of delaminated composite laminates. 
The damage of low-velocity impacted cfrp laminates with different stacking sequences based on micro-mechanics of failure

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate has excellent properties of high stiffness and high strength. However, it is susceptible to external impact loading which would cause delaminations. In order to realize the safe design of composite structure, accurate prediction of strength of CFRP structure according to the failure mechanisms is vitally important. In this paper, a multiscale analysis method based on micro-mechanics of failure (MMF) theory is used to study the intralaminar damage of CFRP laminates with different stacking sequences under impact loading, and the progressive failure process analysis combining MMF and continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is realized. Bi-linear cohesive model is adopted to capture the initiation and propagation of delamination. Laminates with various stacking sequences including [902, -452, 902, -452]s, [02, 452, 02, 452]s, [902, 02, 902, 02]s, [02, 902, 02, 902]s under low-velocity impact loading are studied. The characteristics of structure response, intralaminar damage and delamination of the four specimens are studied by both simulation and experiments. The effectiveness and validation of the proposed approach are confirmed.

Abstract:This paper represents experimental and numerical investigations into the dynamic response of woven carbon fiber reinforced thick composite laminates under low-velocity impact. Experiments with nine impact energies are carried out by the drop weight testing machine. The force-displacement curves are extracted from experimental data, and the influence of impact energy on impact response is discussed. The relationships between impact energy and impact performance such as peak force, maximum displacement, and absorbed energy are analyzed. The damage morphology obtained by digital microscope and ultrasonic C-scan is used to analyze the damage mechanisms. Experimental results show that woven composite laminates considered here exhibited several failure modes, including indentation, delamination, matrix cracks and fiber breakage. The finite element model is established to study the complex damage and failure mechanisms by employing ABAQUS/Explicit. Good consistency is achieved between the experimental and numerical results by comparing the force-time curves, impact resistance and damage status. Finally, the impact damage behavior of woven composite laminates with helicoidal layups is explored.

Abstract:In practical engineering applications, composite sandwich structures are always in preload condition before subjected to possible low velocity impact (LVI) occasions. In the present work, a nonlinear finite element (FE) model is developed to study the mechanical behavior of preloaded aluminum honeycomb sandwich structures with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) face sheets under LVI. Johnson–Cook model is adopted to identify the damage of aluminum honeycomb core; a progressive damage constitutive model and a bilinear cohesive zone model are employed to capture the intra-laminar response and inter-laminar delamination of CFRP face sheets. The effects of preload condition and impact position on the LVI resistance of sandwich plate are analyzed in detail. Besides, the energy absorption properties and damage characteristics of sandwich plate during the impact are examined. The results show that tension preload reduces the damage area of the core and the compression preload causes the sandwich plate to bend and deform when it is impacted. The effect of impact position on the damage of sandwich plate shows obvious asymmetry. This work provides a transferable technique for numerical analysis of LVI issues of other composite structures under preloading.
