Abstract:Traffic safety especially freeway safety has become of increasing concern of transport agencies due to the increasing losses to society. The crash surrogate, which is defined as the measure of crash proximity, is widely accepted as an alternative to crash data by taking advantage of many merits. With the increased travel demand, freeways frequently operate at capacity or even in a state of synchronized flow with high speed and small headway. Under this kind of state, even a slight disturbance might result in a rear-end crash or even a chain collision (multi-vehicle collision), which could consequently lead to serious health, economic and environmental problems. However, the traditional surrogate measures could not perform very well in this state due to some limitations. Surrogate measure Aggregated Crash Index (ACI), a tree-structure based indicator, is designed based on a hypothetical disturbance imposed. With the hypothetic disturbance, ACI can be applied to any car following scenario without any restricted conditions. In this paper, we carry out a case study to illustrate how ACI is applied to the distinct car-following scenarios. The result shows that ACI has more comprehensive capability and applicability on representing crash risk.
Novel Crash Surrogate Measure for Freeways

Abstract:In this paper, a disturbance-based methodology was proposed to represent the safety level of a car-following scenario. According to the probabilistic causal model, the following vehicles always take evasive actions to avoid a collision in the crash mechanism. In this study, the probabilistic model is modified to evaluate the maximum disturbance a car-following scenario can accommodate corresponding to the maximum evasive action taken by the following vehicle. This paper aims to investigate the safety level of a car-following scenario by estimating its capability index on accommodating disturbance. The surrogate measure, Disturbance Accommodate Index (DAI), is thus proposed to represent the stability of a car-following scenario by measuring its maximum capability on accommodating disturbance. Further, a case study is conducted to evaluate the performance of DAI by using the traffic and crash data provided by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland. The results show that the DAI outperforms the other crash surrogate measures (e.g., Aggregated Crash Index, Time to Collision, and Proportion of Stopping Distance) in representing rear-end crash risk, followed by the discussion.
Will Higher Traffic Flow Lead to More Traffic Conflicts? A Crash Surrogate Metric Based Analysis

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to examine the relationship between traffic flow and potential conflict risks by using crash surrogate metrics. It has been widely recognized that one traffic flow corresponds to two distinct traffic states with different speeds and densities. In view of this, instead of simply aggregating traffic conditions with the same traffic volume, we represent potential conflict risks at a traffic flow fundamental diagram. Two crash surrogate metrics, namely, Aggregated Crash Index and Time to Collision, are used in this study to represent the potential conflict risks with respect to different traffic conditions. Furthermore, Beijing North Ring III and Next Generation SIMulation Interstate 80 datasets are utilized to carry out case studies. By using the proposed procedure, both datasets generate similar trends, which demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology and the transferability of our conclusions.
Safety Evaluation for Expressways: A Comparative Study for Macroscopic and Microscopic Indicators

Abstract:Objective: This article is to assess the performance of 3 macroscopic safety indicators (speed, speed dispersion, and volume) and two microscopic potential crash risks (time to collision and deceleration rate to avoid crash) on safety evaluation for expressways.Methods: Field data were collected at 3 locations for 4 different time periods on an expressway in Beijing, China. The speed of each vehicle, headway time, and vehicle length were recorded by a traffic management system. The 5 safety indicators were thus calibrated on the basis of the collected data. Further, consistency and comparative analyses were applied to assess the performance of indicators.Results: According to the analyses, speed dispersion was a better predictor of the two microscopic potential risks compared to the two macroscopic indicators.Conclusions: Speed dispersion is recommended to proactively assess road safety because (1) it provides consistent risk evaluation with microscopic potential risks and (2) it makes data collection easier.
Propagation and dissipation of crash risk on saturated freeways

Abstract:This paper presents a simulation-based methodology for examining the propagation and dissipation of crash risks caused by different intensities of disturbances. A modified cellular automata model is developed and validated based on survey data to simulate saturated traffic on the Pacific Motorway (Helensvale section) in Queensland. Two risk indices, individual risk and societal risk, are proposed based on the time-to-collision notion, representing the risk from distinct perspectives. The societal risk is found to be parabolically related to the intensity of the disturbance. This relationship might provide a solution for estimating crashes on saturated freeways.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Studies have proven that the crash possibility and crash type are not the same among different expressway segment types. However, few studies have conducted real-time safety analysis considering different segment types. This study aimed to explore the crash mechanism's heterogeneity for different segment types (i.e., merge, diverge, weaving, and basic segments).METHOD: To enable in-depth exploration, this study used detailed traffic data, which were 0-10 min before crash, at 1-min intervals, and from five detectors of both the upstream and downstream to the target segment. This study analyzed the crash mechanism's heterogeneity from the following aspects: crash characteristics, significant crash contributing variables, and variables' importance. Based on this, a variables selection method was proposed to solve the huge dimension scale in modeling. Then, a nested logit model was built, which could consider the crash mechanism's heterogeneity, to quantitatively analyze the impact of crash contributing factors on the crash risk.RESULTS: The results revealed that there are statistically significant differences in crash characteristics between each segment type. Additionally, the sources of most crash contributing factors were found to be significantly different in the spatial-temporal dimension between each segment type. Moreover, this study found that the weather parameter, indicating pavement's wet condition, had a similar effect on crash risk between different segment types. However, the geometry and traffic parameters had significantly different impacts between different segment types. Moreover, when the number of target segments' upstream ramps increases or when the distance between ramps and the target segment decreases, the crash risk would increase. Practical Applications: This study can be applied in the intelligent transportation system to improve traffic safety performance, especially in active traffic management systems.

Abstract:The traditional freeway safety studies with “poststatic” thinking basically use cross-sectional data or panel data, which find it difficult to figure out real-time traffic crash risk factors. With the development of information collection technology, it is possible to obtain high-resolution traffic flow data currently, which provide a data basis for the dynamic traffic safety research towards freeways. This research aims at accurately identifying the real-time traffic crash precursors on freeways and addressing the shortcomings of conventional dynamic traffic safety research with the thinking of limited factor dimensions. In this research, dimensional data were applied as input model variables, the input dataset includes traffic crash data and the matched dynamic traffic flow data, and weather information and road characteristics were also considered to figure out the interaction effects between these dimensional factors. The XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) was carried out to identify the dynamic crash-prone variables and the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) interpreter was introduced to interpret the XGBoost model, as well as the visualization of the influence of each eigenvalue on the traffic crash was realized. The results indicate that, in addition to traffic flow variables, road, weather, and temporal characteristics also have an impact on the traffic crash risk, and there is an interaction between each feature. The results of this research can provide the theoretical basis for freeway real-time traffic crash prediction and safety control.

Abstract:Vehicle bumping at bridge-head seriously affects traveling comfort and safety on the high-grade highway.It greatly reduces the operational efficiency of high-grade highways and the overall level of service.At present,there is no feasible index or way to evaluate the impact of vehicle bumping at bridge-head on driving safety.In order to solve this problem,the paper presents evaluation indexes of the impact of vehicle bumping at bridge-head on driving safety from the point of view of basic element of road and environment which impacts driving safety,and the evaluation model is established based on analytical hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method.The paper also presents the evaluation indexes and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model of the impact of vehicle bumping at bridge-head on driving safety.By the analytic hierarchical process method,the weights of the evaluation indexes were then determined,with the three rating evaluation aggregate parameters well founded.Finally,evaluation system of vehicle bumping at bridge-head on driving safety is developed based on MATLAB software.And for the sake of the convenience of users,we use the function of GUI of MATLAB and the evaluation system is used in typical practical engineering for assessment.The result is in line with the actual situation,and it has very good referential value to sovle the problem of driving safety at bridge-head.It provides an evaluation method of vehicle bumping at bridge-head on driving safety and has a good effect on application.
Optimizing crash risk models for freeway segments: A focus on the heterogeneous effects of road geometric design features, traffic operation status, and crash units

Abstract:Traffic crash risk prediction models have been developed to investigate crash occurrence mechanisms and analyze the effects of various traffic operation factors, data on which are collected by densely deployed detectors, on crash risk. However, in China, freeway detectors are widely spaced (the spacing is usually more than 2 km) and the road geometries vary frequently, especially in mountainous areas. Moreover, many freeway sections are located in urban areas and serve commuting functions. Due to the different mechanisms of crash occurrence on road segments with different geometric design features and traffic operation status, it is necessary to consider these heterogeneities in crash risk prediction. In addition to considering observable heterogeneous effects, it is equally important to consider the existence of unobserved heterogeneities among crash units. This study focuses on the effects of different types of heterogeneities on crash risk for segments of the Yongtaiwen Freeway in Zhejiang Province, China, using crash, traffic flow, and road geometric design data. Latent class analysis (LCA), latent profile analysis (LPA), and a combination of both methods are respectively used to classify road segments into subgroups based on road geometric design features, the traffic operation status, and a combination of both. The results reveal that the binary logit model considering the heterogeneous effects of the combination of road geometric design features and the traffic operation status achieves the best performance. Furthermore, binary conditional logit models and grouped random parameter logit models are developed to analyze the unobserved heterogeneity among crash units, and the results show that the latter has a better goodness of fit. Finally, a paradigm of the crash risk prediction for freeway segments with widely-spaced traffic detectors and frequently-changing geometric features is provided for traffic safety management departments.

Abstract:With the enormous losses to society resulting from motor-vehicle crashes, traffic safety has become an increasing concern of transport agencies. The surrogate events, which are defined as measures of accident proximity, are recognised as an alternative instead of the accumulation of crashes in safety evaluation, by taking advantage of many merits. This paper briefly assesses the range of available events by analysing their strengths and weaknesses. By using an illustrative case study, the applicability and reliability of various surrogate events under different situations are discussed. While the introduction of surrogate events could potentially improve our understanding of the affecting factors for motor-vehicle crashes, it is the prospect of combining evolving methodologies with far more detailed vehicle crash data that holds the greatest promise for the future.
A Crash Risk Identification Method for Freeway Segments with Horizontal Curvature Based on Real-Time Vehicle Kinetic Response

Abstract:With the development and maturation of vehicle-based data acquisition technology, in-vehicle data is increasingly being used to explore road safety. This paper reports on research that analyzed the real-time tire force data (kinetic response) obtained from vehicle kinetic experiments, and constructed a new approach for identifying the high-risk of crashes on freeway segments with horizontal curvature. First, the road was divided into 1km units. Then, taking into account the characteristics of freeway alignment, each segment with horizontal curve was selected as the object of subsequent analysis. Automotive instrumentation was used to obtain a measure of tire force in the course of normal driving. The entire data set was preprocessed according to rate of change and the density of the data was reduced. By defining the outliers of the kinetic data and conducting factor analysis, two representative crash risk indicators of longitudinal and lateral stability were obtained. Negative binomial regression model (NBR model) and random effects negative binomial regression model (RENBR model) were constructed and jointly applied based on the new indicators to predict the risk value of horizontal curve segments. The method showed good prediction performance (71.8 %) for high-risk road segments with design flaws, but the predicted effect for low-risk road segments was not ideal. This study not only illustrated the effectiveness of in-vehicle data in assessing road crash risk by coupling multiple kinetic parameters, but also provided support for freeway safety research using surrogate measures of risk when there is a lack of crash statistics.
Assessing Surrogate Safety Measures using a Safety Pilot Model Deployment Dataset

Abstract:Emerging data sources such as Safety Pilot Model Deployment (SPMD) provide a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of collision mechanisms and to develop novel safety metrics. The SPMD program was a comprehensive data collection effort under real-world conditions in Ann Arbor, Michigan, covering over 73 lane-miles and including approximately 3,000 pieces of onboard vehicle equipment and 30 pieces of roadside equipment. In-vehicle data (e.g., speed, location) collected by the SPMD program can potentially be an important supplement to traditional crash data-oriented safety analysis. The goal of this study was to assess roadway link-level surrogate safety measures using the vehicle trajectory data from SPMD. The study’s objectives included: 1) developing a framework to process the SPMD dataset using big-data analytics; 2) converting raw vehicle motion data from SPMD to surrogate safety measures; and 3) analyzing the statistical relationship between crash records and the calculated safety index. The statistical models showed that modified time to collision (MTTC) outperforms time to collision (TTC) and deceleration rate to avoid collision (DRAC) with respect to its goodness of fit. The findings are promising in that augmenting safety analysis with surrogate measures and vehicle performance (e.g., speed and brake duration from connected vehicles) improves the overall model performance. Such information is vital for safety analysis, especially in the absence of detailed roadway and traffic data.

Abstract:Proactive traffic safety management systems can reduce crashes by identifying crash precursors, evaluating real-time crash risks, and implementing suitable interventions. The basic prerequisite for developing such a system is to propose a reliable crash risk evaluation model that takes real-time traffic flow data as input. Previous studies have primarily focused on real-time crash prediction using some statistical or machine-learning methods. However, further quantitative evaluation and classification of crash risks have been ignored. In this study, we conduct a systematic crash risk evaluation workflow, including crash risk prediction, crash risk quantification, and crash risk classification. Specifically, the crash risk prediction using an extended logit model is proposed, from which CAS, CSD, UAS, DAS, DTV are identified to be contributing factors of crash risks. Then a crash risk quantification model based on the parameter evaluation of the extended logit model is developed. The crash risks of urban expressways and their spatial-temporal evolution trends are quantified. Finally, the crash risks are classified into high crash risk level, moderate crash risk level, and low crash risk level by the k-means cluster algorithm. Then the threshold boundaries of different crash risk levels are determined. The research results provide a proactive guidance for traffic safety management of urban expressways.

Prediction and analysis of likelihood of freeway crash occurrence considering risky driving behavior

Abstract:The prediction of the likelihood of vehicle crashes constitutes an indispensable component of freeway safety management. Due to data collection limitations, studies have used mainly traffic flow-related variables to develop freeway crash prediction models but rarely have considered the effect of risky driving behavior on the likelihood of crashes. This study employed navigation software to collect driving behavior data and integrated multi-source data that include vehicle speed, traffic volume, and congestion index values. The study also employed the 'synthesizing minority oversampling technique and edited nearest neighbor' (SMOTE + ENN) coupled method for data balance processing. Three freeway crash likelihood prediction models were built based on the binomial logit, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and support vector machine algorithms, respectively. The Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) algorithm was utilized to explore the effect of each feature variable on the likelihood of crashes. The results show that the prediction accuracy of the XGBoost model is the best of the three compared models. Under the optimal control-to-case ratio (1:1), the prediction accuracy of the XGBoost model reached 0.96 in this study, and the recall rate, specificity, and area-under-the-curve values were 0.86, 0.96, and 0.907, respectively. Comparative test results demonstrate that ranking risky driving behavior into three levels of intensity can effectively enhance the predictive accuracy of the XGBoost model. Moreover, the XGBoost model with its ten-minute time step outperformed the XGBoost model with its five-minute time step in terms of prediction accuracy. The results of the SHAP-based analysis show that the likelihood of highway crashes is high when the traffic congestion level is high and the distribution of the vehicle speed in the upstream roadway section is significant. Also, both sharp acceleration and sharp deceleration lead to greater likelihood of crashes. This paper aims to provide an effective framework for predicting and interpreting the likelihood of freeway crashes, thereby providing guidance for crash prevention, driver training, and the development of traffic regulations.

Identification Method for Crash-Prone Sections of Mountain Highway under Complex Weather Conditions

Abstract:Mountain highway crashes usually have a weather tendency, and the crash-prone sections show obvious weather differences. However, there were few targeted quantitative analyses of the impact of weather conditions on crash-prone sections in previous studies. Aiming at the problem that traditional identification methods ignore the difference in weather, this paper proposed the time-spatial density ratio method. The method quantified the length of the road section, the period, and the influence of different weather conditions through the time-spatial density ratio. Then the time-spatial density ratios under different weather conditions were comprehensively sorted in parallel. Finally, the risk threshold was determined according to the characteristics of the cumulative frequency curve's double inflection points, and the crash-prone sections under each weather condition were identified. This paper evaluated the crash-prone sections of the G76 Expressway. Moreover, the crash risk situation under each weather condition was characterized through kernel density analysis. The method was compared with the cumulative frequency method, a traditional method suitable for Chinese highways with similar application conditions. The effective search index was utilized as a comparison factor. The results showed that the effective search index of the time-spatial density ratio method was more than 80% greater than that of the cumulative frequency method.

Abstract:In order to evaluate roadside crash severity and help making decision on roadside safety improvement alternatives, this article proposes a roadside crash severity evaluation method based on vehicle kinematics metric during the crash: Acceleration Severity Index. Based on the field investigation on 1917 km of representative roads, roadside crash test standards and parameters were determined. A total of 59 crash scenarios, involving 5 typical roadside obstacles, 2 types of guardrails, 15 embankment slopes, and 3 types of vehicles (car, bus, and truck), were designed for simulated crash testing with VPG3.2 and LS-DYNA971 software. The x-, y-, and z-direction acceleration (or deceleration) curves of a test vehicle’s center of mass during each crash test were collected for the calculation of the Acceleration Severity Index values. The Fisher optimal partition algorithm was used to cluster the Acceleration Severity Index values to identify an appropriate number of roadside crash severity levels and the corresponding threshold values that demarcate these levels. The results showed that the roadside crash severity classification produced by Acceleration Severity Index–based method is consistent with handbook Guideline for Implementation of Highway Safety Enhancement Project . Therefore, when crash data are missing, crash test could be a feasible surrogate method for roadside crash severity evaluation.
Estimation of Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) in Mountain Freeways: Considering Temporal Instability in Crash Data

Abstract:The combined contributions to mountain freeway safety of pavement performance, weather conditions, and traffic condition indicators have not been thoroughly investigated due to the complexity of their interactions and temporal instability. A cross-sectional analysis using a Generalized Linear Model (GLM) approach with negative binomial distribution considering time-correlation effects (TC-NB) was adopted to estimate the Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) of these indicators for different segment types, alignment types, and cross-sectional forms based on eight quarters of data from mountain freeways in China. According to the results, improving the pavement performance indexes positively impacts the safety of different freeway segments, especially for the curved segments. Quarterly Average Daily Traffic (QADT) has significantly negative safety effects on two-lane segments with relatively narrow spaces, while the proportion of large vehicles plays a decisive role in the safety impacts of tunnel segments. Small/moderate rain days in a quarter (SMR) were significantly positively correlated with crash frequency, while the percentage of torrential rain days in a quarter (TR) showed an opposite trend. The results of this study contribute to the effective coordination of traffic monitoring systems, pavement management systems, and traffic safety management systems to develop targeted improvement countermeasures for different freeway section types.

Clustering-Based Roadway Segment Division for the Identification of High-Crash Locations

Abstract:This article introduces a clustering approach to roadway segment division, in place of the traditional fixed-length and variable-length division methods, to improve the calibration of safety performance functions (SPFs) for the purpose of identifying high-crash locations. The clustering approach helps to reduce crash heterogeneity for within-group elements by grouping roadway segments with similar crash distributions into homogeneous groups. For comparison purpose, all three segment division methods were applied to a 142.6-kilometer (88.6-mile) stretch of freeway on Interstate 95 that spans three counties in southern Florida in the United States. Using 5 years of crash data occurring on segments generated from each of the three division methods, the corresponding SPFs were calibrated using the negative binomial model. The calibrated SPFs were then used in the empirical Bayes approach of identifying high-crash locations. The results showed that clustering method produced a much better-fitted SPF than that produced by using the traditional division methods. Furthermore, the site screening for high-crash locations on segments divided by the clustering method improved upon the shortcomings of that using the existing sliding window method.

Abstract:With the merit on representing traffic conflict through examining the crash mechanism and causality proactively, crash surrogate measures have long been proposed and applied to evaluate the traffic safety. However, the driver's Perception-Reaction Time (PRT), an important variable in crash mechanism, has not been considered widely into surrogate measures. In this regard, it is important to know how the PRT affects the performances of surrogate indicators. To this end, three widely used surrogate measures are firstly modified by involving the PRT into their crash mechanisms. Then, in order to examine the difference caused by the PRT, a comparative study is carried out on a freeway section of the Pacific Motorway, Australia. This result suggests that the surrogate indicators' performances in representing rear-end crash risks are improved with the incorporating of the PRT for the investigated section.

Abstract:A roadway departure (RwD) crash is defined as a crash that occurs after a vehicle crosses an edge line or a center line, or otherwise leaves the designated travel path. RwD crashes account for approximately 50% of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. Additionally, crashes related to roadside fixed objects such as trees, utility poles, or other poles (TUOP) make up 12–15% of all fatal RwD crashes in the U.S. Data spanning over seven years (2010–2016) shows that TUOP crashes account for approximately 22% of all fatal crashes in Louisiana, which is significantly higher than the national statistic. This study aims to determine the effect of crash, geometric, environmental, and vehicle characteristics on TUOP crashes by applying the fast and frugal tree (FFT) heuristics algorithm to Louisiana crash data. FFT identifies five major cues or variable threshold attributes that contribute significantly to predicting TUOP crashes. These cues include posted speed limit, primary contributing factor, highway type, weather, and locality type. The balanced accuracy is around 56% for both training and test data. The current model shows higher accuracies compared to machine learning models (e.g., support vector machine, CART). The present findings emphasize the importance of a comprehensive understanding of factors that influence TUOP crashes. The insights from this study can help data-driven decision making at both planning and operation levels.
