Papers Selected from the Second International Symposium on Insect Physiology

Abstract:This Special Issue presents four papers originally presented at the Second International Symposium on Insect Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, convened in Chengde, China, during July 2009. This Chinese Symposium series is growing in international recognition, with attendees from the United States, Japan and elsewhere. The papers in this issue are selected to showcase the broad range of insect science in China. China is emerging as a world leader in investment in science and in scientific publications, including insect science. The latest available Science and Technology Statistics Data Book (2007; produced each year by the Ministry of Science and Technology) tells an exciting story. In 2006 China was second only to the USA in papers indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP and was first globally in numbers of Research and Development personnel. In our arena of insect science, China is now abreast of Japan, and working to catch up with the United States. Both the numbers of patents applied for and numbers of patents granted increased by approximately sixfold in the decade 1996–2006. The numbers of overseas Chinese students nearly doubled from 2001 to 2006 while the numbers of returnees almost quadrupled. Gross spending on research and development has tripled from 2001 to 2006; during China's highest rate of economic growth, gross spending on research and development as a proportion of the gross domestic product also increased. Funding devoted to science increased by 8% in 2010. Although only a small proportion of the total funds is devoted to agriculture, as seen in virtually all advanced nations, investment in agriculture and insect science is growing apace. These trends are likely to continue into the foreseeable future. Most important, the outlook for insect science at the global level is very bright. In this issue, Su-Fen Bai and colleagues in Xue-Xin Chen's laboratory report on interspecific competition between two endoparasitoids, Cotesia vestalis and Oomyzus sololowskii, within their common host, larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. Multiparasitism is the common term for the occasions when eggs of both species are placed in the same larva. Usually only one parasitoid species survives these situations due to competition between them. In this system, C. vestalis is the stronger competitor and Bai et al. report on the mechanisms accounting for this outcome. Zhan et al. in Qili Feng's group report on a midgut-specific chymotrypsin in larvae of the Oriental leafworm moth (also the tobacco cutworm), Spodoptera litura. Moving beyond the standard cloning, the authors draw on several approaches to show that the protein is expressed mainly in the midgut. In their studies of the insect endocrine gland, the prothoracic gland, Ju-Ling Lin and Shi-Hong Gu report that prothoracicotropic hormone stimulates tyrosine phosphorylation of at least two proteins in the gland. One of these proteins is a key component of an intracellular signaling pathway that helps understand how prothoracicotroic hormone influences production of ecdysterioid in Bombyx mori. Finally, moving beyond insects, X-W Zhang and colleagues in Jin-Xing Wang's group introduce a new C-type lectin discovered in the red crayfish, Procambarus clarkia. They cloned the gene encoding the lectin and used recombinant lectin to show that the lectin binds to specific membrane components of bacteria, but does not by itself cause agglutination. The authors concluded that the crayfish C-type lectin is a pattern recognition receptor, involved in immune surveillance for infection. It is our pleasure to present this Special Issue of AIBP, drawn from the International Symposium in Chengde. The Third International Symposium on Insect Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will meet in Shanghai during July 2011. The 3rd International Symposium on Insect Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IPBMB) will be held from July 2nd–6th, 2011, in Shanghai. As a major forum for the exchange of multidisciplinary research in insect science, IPBMB will attract 200–250 scientists, including faculty, post-doctoral scientists and graduate students. Some most active scientists in the field will be invited to give plenary speeches. The symposium is structured into four major components: one, plenary sessions with keynote speeches and special reports; two, thematic symposia; three, pre-congress workshops; and four, vendor exhibitions. Papers selected from the symposium will be considered for publication in Archives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology and Insect Science.
